WRT54G Connection Issues *Odd!*

Hey All,
Before I begin, I'll just say now that I do have some networking experience and have tried both 'Googling' and searching for an answer on my own.  Ok, on to the problem.
Host Computer (Desktop): Windows XP 32-bit
Wireless PC (Desktop): Windows 7 32-bit
Router: WRT54G Firmware Version 8.00.8 build 001
ISP: Optimum Online (Cable)
Router to Wireless PC distance: approximately 15-20 feet, same floor.  2 Wooden doors between them.
Issue: The wireless PC (running a Netgear WPN311 Rangemax Adaptor) is having frequent connection drops and latency issues.  I've upgraded the firmware, hard rebooted, changed the wireless channel, moved any objects emitting a frequency away, and reset all settings to scratch.  I've deleted all wireless profiles off my PC (then added the correct one) and made sure to change the settings so it does NOT connect to a stronger signal network.
Now here's the odd part.  About 80% of the time I get a drop or extremely low signal I notice the wireless PC picks up a phantom network with the name "linksys".  The network has a poor, unsecured connection.  Is it possible my router is emitting 2 SSID's??  I'm pretty frustrated with the drops as it (of course!) happens when I'm in a game or watching some online videos using significant bandwidth.
Any help would be appreciated..Thanks!

Set your SSID to something unique. Lower down the MTU. Increase the Beacon Interval found in Advanced Wireless sub-tab.

  • WRT54GS Connection issue

I have been using a WRT54GS without issue for the last 3 years. Two weeks ago a problem arose which stopped the router from opening new connections after some arbitrary amount of time. Thinking it was just an age issue i quickly went out and purchased the identical router only to hook it up and find an identical issue. The problem causes both wired and wireless connections to lose the ability to create new connections to the internet any old connections opened, for example an online radio station or an online game continue to work if they were opened before the issue arose, I can not however open new connections. After the second router proved useless i figured it must be my internet connection so i bypassed the router and hooked up my connection directly to the back of my computer, no issues. I have already updated the firmware of both devices to no avail, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated after already wasting the $50 on the second WRT54GS and losing the receipt to return it i would prefer to avoid spending more money on a new router if possible, thanks.

Hard reset your router to factory settings and then re-configure it...To reset the linksys router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Can anyone help with a WRT54G connection issue - it just stopped working

I have a Dell running Windows XP.  I have a DSL connection with a Westell 6100 modem connected to a Linksys WRT54G router connected to my main computer.  I use the router for a wireless connection to my laptop.  This setup worked fine for years - until a few days ago.  I no longer have internet access on my laptop and main computer.
If I connect from the modem directly to the main computer, I have internet access.  But as soon as I put the router back in - I have no access.
All the appropriate lights on the modem and router are lit.  When I do try to access the internet I get the dreaded PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED.  When I run the diagnostic, the error log shows: "Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed".  I don’t know if this is a standard catch-all error or not?
Everything was fine until a few days ago when I just lost access.  Do I need a new router?  I hate to buy one and then find out something was corrupted on my computer instead. :-(
    Thanks!

When connected from modem to PC directly (no router) and I type in ip[config /all (don't know if this is what i should do) -- I get:
    IP Address 192.168.1.100
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers 192.168.1.1
Does this mean I should try to change the LinkSys Router?
I will go look there next.

  • Wrt54g connectivity issue

I have a wrt54g, it will only let two computers connect wirelessly at a time...Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks in advance

It should allow 32 wireless computers to connect wirelessly...What is the problem you are facing on the other wireless computer while trying to connect wirelessly...If you are using the network name as "linksys"(default) then, try to change it to some unique name...Make sure that you are typing the correct Security/Network Key while connecting to the wireless network.

  • WRT54G connectivity issues (ram problem?)

I've done everything I can to try and figure out what is wrong, but unfortunately, all I've been able to do is narrow down the problem with something internal with the router.
    WRT54G v3.1 Firmware Version: v4.21.1
    RCA Cable Modem
TimeWarner Road Runner Cable Service ~6mbps
This is at my parents house, so I'm not actually around all the time, but it happened earlier this afternoon. The router will respond to pings, wireless signal is ok, the router pages load, I can change all settings. But from any computer behind the router, I cannot access anything outside, nothing makes it past the router. Unfortunately, I don't have anything I could put between the router and modem to sniff what kinda traffic is going between the two.
The same things happen regardless of wired or wireless.
I've tried sniffing traffic, doing pings and nslookup and tracert and such, and the router responds, but nothing after that. If I go into the router diagnostics page, I can do tracerts and pings from there, and everything seems to respond fine (gateway, dns servers, google.com, etc).
Power cycling the router doesn't work, and neither does resetting the modem (and any combination thereof). The only thing that seems to work is resetting the router completely with the button on the back (which of course resets all settings and I have to change them back, which is a pain, and has thus caused my family to leave the router wide open with factory default settings.
I'm considering custom firmware... I know my way around linux, I'd say my level is intermediate, so I'm not too concerned about that, but my family doesn't, so I'm not really sure what firmware I should use.
Thanks for reading my long post, hope someone can help!
Edit: Reason I suggest problems with RAM because I've read in various places that the router keeps connection history for a long time, and the router tends to die when my family runs torrents, when the most number of connections are made. When it died today, no torrents were running, but there had been a larger than usual number of wireless clients because of thanksgiving break, and having guests over.

Your WRT54G has 16 MB of RAM.  Many of the newer WRT54G's have only 8 MB of RAM, and they seem to be more prone to the "torrents" problem, although it appears that any Linksys router can potentially have a torrents problem.
Obviously, the router should not work in the way you described.   Perhaps the firmware has become corrupted.  I would suggest that you re-download and reinstall the latest firmware for your router.  After reinstalling the firmware, you will need to reset the router to factory defaults.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
After resetting the router to factory defaults, I would suggest that you simply connect it to your cable modem and see if the problem recurs while using all default settings.   Also, during this test period, do not let anyone use "torrents" or any other P2P programs.  Assuming that this corrects the problem, the next step would be to begin using torrents, and see if that alone will cause the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT54G Connection Issue

I am trying to set up a WRT54G in a school classroom.  I can connect the computer direct to the wall ethernet jack and everything works fine.  When I connect the wall jack to the WRT54G and then to the computer, I can access some websites but not others.  Any suggestions?

Who is your Internet Service Provider...?
Are you able to open all the website when computer is connected to the Modem..?
Are you getting the problem on the wired computers only or on the wireless computer as well..?
If your Internet Service Provider is Cable follow this link to configure the router.
If your Internet Service Provider is DSL follow this link to configure the router.
On the setup page of the router, under Security tab, uncheck "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" and click on Save Settings. Now check.

  • WRT54G Connection Issues XP

I have a WRT54G Wireless router, WPSM54G Printer Server, a Tivo, a Wii, and two Toshiba laptops (one XP, and one Vista). I originally had both laptops connect wirelessly with the router and my Tivo wired to the back of the router. I was using WPA encryption with this setup and had no problems whatsoever for several months. I then bought the printserver and re-setup the network from scratch. I also changed encryption from WPA to WEP and connected my Nintendo Wii (as the Wii does not support WPA). So my setup is now is as follows: Wireless: 1 XP Laptop 1 Vista Laptop 1 Nintendo Wii 1 WPSM54G Printserver Wired: Tivo My XP laptop gets frequent disconnects (that cannot be repaired) and only works sparingly and randomly. The Vista Laptop works fine. I've updated to firmware version 1.02.2 and the problem persists. I'm thankful to any insight you can provide.

Hows the reception on the xp machine that keeps dropping the connection? I'm not sure if the WRT54G supports QOS or not (i'd have to login and check mine) but it seems like there is a lot of traffic on your little home network there QOS can be set to let one device have priority over other devices using the router, and in a crowded situation such as yours, it can make a lot of difference.

  • WRT54G connection issues

    Hello,
I just bought this router for my apartment this past tuesday.  I set it up initially myself.  I changed the SSID and stopped broadcasting it.  I also set up a WEP security thing.  I also set up MAC address filtering.  I got my computer to connect to it just fine.  I use a cable modem for internet.  It has been running perfectly untill this morning.  I tried to get on the internet this morning, and all of a sudden, i could not find the router on the network.  My computer found another router in my building that was not secure ( very low signal strength but, my computer kept trying to connect to it).  It didnt even see my router.
i initially changed the IP to something like 192.168.28.1  just to try to keep others from logging on if they are in range as an additional security measure ( Not sure if it really helps or not).  I have been able to log in to the web based utility just fine through that IP.  After several hours of trying to find it, I ended up moving the router and modem and hard wiring it to my computer.  I managed to connect that way, and it seemd fine, but if i tried to go wireless again, it freaks out.
I reset the router several times, and it didnt help.  I ended up calling tech support, didnt tell me anything i didnt really already know, but had me do a few things different.  I upgraded the firmware to the latest version, and cloned my computers MAC address.  i dont have everything else set back up again, but, now i can connect and seems just fine.
Any idea why it just stopped working for no apparent reason?  Will this happen again?

    Thank you for the rating.
If you want to make it as hard as possible, don't use WEP. Use WPA2 or WPA with a strong passphrase.
With SSID broadcast all it takes is a single transmitted packet through the wireless and anyone can pick the SSID up with a wireless card in monitor mode. The SSID is always transmitted unencrypted.
WEP can be broken within a few minutes.
The MAC addresses are also always transmitted unencrypted. You can clone any MAC address you want in the driver of your wireless card. Thus, all you have to do is to pick up a MAC address for your LAN and you are in.
If you don't want to check the settings as I have suggested then I cannot help you any further. You wrote that your computer tried to connect to a different network. The computer should not try to connect to any other wireless network except those on the preferred list unless configured to do differently.

  • WRT54G connection issues with cable

My router was working fine after few months back, 1 thing I suspect is that I upgraded to the latest firmware of v.2.
The problem is the access to the out world stops working, I can login into the router wireless and access all the UI  but if I PING from inside the router to an external site it just doesn't work.
The only way to fix this is by resetting to the default settings (in the administration tab) or hard reset (power button from the back), after this it works but I need to configure again the security, after a while may be a day or some times 4 days after it stops working again and I need to repeat the same steps.
What I believe is that for some reason something gets renewed in the router and messes up with the routing table so nothing can go outside the router itself.
I called Linksys and they didn't help is there somebody with the same issue ? How can I fix it?

  • IChat video connection issue, not related to router

I received a brand new 20" iMac Core 2 Duo just yesterday and intended to use iChat AV to video conference with my girlfriend, who has a 12" iBook G4 1.2GHz with an iSight and all system software up-to-date.
We both have DSL connections at home. We also both have wireless routers. The very first time we tried a video conference, it worked perfectly without a hiccup and everything just looked and sounded wonderful. At the time, she was connected wirelessly and I was connected both wirelessly and through Ethernet to my router's local network.
The second time we tried it (only a few hours later), seemingly without having changed any settings, it failed to work, and hasn't worked since. At first, we would get Error -22, saying something about how bandwidth is insufficient to maintain a video conference. However, I do not believe bandwidth is the real issue since all other network/internet tasks on both ends are spiffy as usual. We also both tried turning off Airport and just connecting through Ethernet to our routers' local network. Same problem.
To then determine if the problem was with one our routers, we both set them aside and plugged our DSL modems directly into our computers and connected to the internet with PPPoE. This appears to partially fix the problem: we are able to initiate a video conference, we both have audio, I can see her, but she can't see me; sort of a one-sided conference. On my screen, the image of myself freezes as soon as the conference is initiated. So unless I'm missing something, the ultimate cause of this problem doesn't appear to be the routers.
You can bet I tried a bunch of the common tips mentioned in this discussion forum before posting this question, such as changing the iChat port in the preferences, turning off Firewalls in the Sharing preferences and changing Quicktime streaming speed.
In summary, it worked once and hasn't worked since, and routers do not appear to be the cause of the issue. Does anyone have any further advice for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    iMac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

First off I want to thank James for his willingness to help me test connections today. James has suggested I check into upping my Mother's connection. I will definitely look into that.
I wanted to update the thread that I tried the three test accounts at Apple (appleu3test01-3) and had success from all three on my home computer via my wireless configuration no less. This is what stumps me about my connection issues with my Mother - we can both connect to others but between us we get error -8's since iChat 3. I also find it odd that this is happening even though we are both Earthlink customers - I would chalk it up to routing tables or something if we were on different ISP's.

  • "Safari can't find the server" - connection issues under Lion

    Hi there,
Since upgrading to Lion, Safari has been displaying this odd and annoying behaviour, where, for some links to some web resources (like maybe 2 clicked links out of 10), it throws up a grey error page telling me it can't find the server (screenshot below):
Normally, this error would be evidience of an intenet connection issue (but it isn't). If I immediately try to find the same resource via another browser (Firefox or Chrome), those other browsers navigate to the site absolutely fine. Although, occasionally (though with less frequency) I'm also getting a similar "Can't find stuff" error with Chrome too.
In the Safari address bar (is this significant?) there isn't even a URL, but a file path to file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources... what does that mean?
Hints from other threads would indicate that this is a Firewall issue, or maybe there's another third-party app causing problem, rather than a problem with Safari under Lion specifically.
But I'm really bugged and irrittate by this. Anyone had a similar experience? Anyone with any ideas? How might I go about finding out what's causing this and fixing it?
    Best wishes,

It's most likely a problem with corrupted files in the Safari Cache or corrupted cookies.
    Go to Safari menu bar
    Click on Safari
    Click "Empty Cache"
    Restart Safari
    If the problem persists...
    Go to Safari -> Preferences
    Go to privacy
    Click "Remove All Website Data"
    Restart Safari
    Cheers - Lupunus

  • Anyone else still having iOS 8.1 Bluetooth Connection issues.

Hi there just wanted to see if anyone is still having the Vehicle "Hands Free" Connection issues via Bluetooth on the iPhone 6? I drive a 2009 Acura TL and I am still having the connection issue. Oddly enough before the 8.1 update I was running 8.0.2 and it worked fine. Now when I get in my car and the phone connects it cripples the entire system. It won't allow me to change to the USB mode for my connected iPod and when I try to place a call via the "Hands Free" system it beeps as if it is activating and then does nothing.
I have tried everything that I can think of with no results. I was hoping there was someone out there with the same car or similar having the same problem that might have found a fix. Chime in and let me know.

I am having similar problems with Bluetooth connectivity but not with a car.  I use a Planatronics Legend.  Everytime that a call comes in, my Legend announces the call then immediately disconnects from my iPhone.  All of this started after upgrading to ios 8.1.
Apple should not advertise fixes to problems without truly confirming the repairs.

  • Frustrating mix of OSX connection issues

Bought the M127fw and have had an endless stream of connection issues with my iMacs and Airport network.
it did at first connect to my wireless network.  But found almost immediately that trying to get it to "wake up" and be seen on the network for printing never worked.  I had to go to it, reset it (pressing the white lighted button on the side of the display) for any of my computers to see it again.
Then it suddenly stopped connecting to the same wireless network it had been connected to.  I've tried 100's of time to get this connection to work.  Oddly, it will connect to the same Airport's secondary network I have set up for guests.  But it will not connect to the main one. (yes, both are set up with the same security settings).
So, then trying to wire it to the Airport and using it as a WPA printer.  That works, but then I can't use it for a scanner.
    My questions
    1) any suggestions for solving for the inability to connect to my wireless
    2) If I solve that, any work around for the devices, "waking up" issue mentioned above
    3) Is there a way to use the scanner via it being connected to my Airport via USB?
    thank you.

This is certainly odd.  I suspect there may be a setting in your Airport that is wonky, especially if the guest network works.
Open Airport Utility and in the Wireless tab, click Wireless Options.  Check to make sure that 802.11g is enabled (along with other modes is fine).
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • WRT54G connected to my Bell HSE Sympatico SpeedStream Modem.

I have my WRT54G connected to my Bell HSE Sympatico SpeedStream Modem. It all worked fine until I tried to set the WRT54G to forward some ports so that I can get to one of the PCs from outside via the NET. I am running Windows XP pro on the PC After I set the post forwarding I still could not see the router from the Net. It seems that the Bell Modem is “blocking” something> I would appreciate some insight to solve this issue.

There should not be a problem if you are using either the speedstream 4200 or 5300 as they are standard modems.  The 6300 and the 6520 are modem/routers so you may have to change a setting.  You can also post on the Bell Forum.

  • Too many wireless-g networks in my neighborhood - connectivity issues???

I have a WRT54G (V.2) wireless router with the latest firmware and a couple of PC (XP) on a wireless-G network.  I can see a variety of other wireless-g networks in my neighborhood all within signal range.  Any where from 8-10 of them...
I have changed channels so that I am not on or near most of the other networks, but with that many it is impossible to find a unique channel and I know they overlap some what.
I seem to have on and off connectivity issues with a PC about 30-40' away in another room.  It works for 5 or so minutes and then disconnects, reconnects to the wireless network and it works again for a little bit.
No changes have been made to the equipment over the last year.  All I can contribute it to is the additional wireless networks within range now.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to better the connectivity?  I see Wireless-N(draft) out, but from all the reviews it does seem to work any better than wireless-g.
What about the db 7 gain antenna over the db 5 the adapters come with?

Thanks for the input.  The network SSID is unique and I am running WPA encryption.  I cannot say what kind of phone systems the neighbors has, but my wireless phone system is at 5.8 Ghz.
The PC does not switch to other systems, just losses connection, then you right click and select repair and it reconnects.  Sometimes it reconnects by itself if you are patient enough to wait for it...
