WRT54G Connection

Hi, I have been using a WRT54G router for a while now and recently started having trouble.  Many of my devices are able to see the wireless connection, but unable to connect to the network.  I get an error from the laptop when I click on connect 'no response from the router'.  Once I hit the reset button on the router it holds a connection for a few hours and then upon starting up a laptop/iPhone etc.. I am unable to connect.
It is common to have 3-4 laptops going at once, an iPhone and an xbox (wired).
Do I need a new router to stop this annoying issue from happening?
I am not the most technical person, so any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

Hi there,
Besides from doing a reset, you may also try to check if you already upgraded your router's firmware to its latest version. Other than that, you might as well need to change your router to a newer model (e.g. E4200 or Valet) since newer router models have better wireless coverage and faster data transmitions.
Hope this could help, cheers!

HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected through my cable company broadband modem on a Mac. I have another computer to which I installed wireless capability because it didn't come with it. This required attching some piece of equipment to the back of the PC which enabled it to get on the internet without another cable modem. My question is this. If I get an iphone or a laptop(with built in wireless ability) will I automatically be able to go on the web because of the router on the Mac.

yes certainly... if you get any wireless device in network that would certainly connects to a wireless n/w of router...

  • WRT54g connected to modem with router

Got a WRT54g connected to a cable modem which acts as a router.  The WRT54g gets an IP address (192.168.1.x) from the cable modem and the WRT54g can ping and tracert to sites on the internet (from the diagnostics page).   The WRT54g is acting as a DHCP server for the 192.168.9.x network and I have the cable modem connected to the WAN port.  (I need to have the cable modem connected to the WAN port b/c I'm using all the ports of the WRT54g.  I want to have the cable modem connected to the wan port too so the network are separate subnets).
Any idea why packets would not be going through the WRT54g?  I've tried setting the router and gateway modes, neither of which work anymore.  I think I used to have it set to router and it work.
    Any thoughts? Suggestions?
    Thanks in Advance.

What network is 192.168.9.x...What other router router you have apart from wrt54g?What is the model number of the other router? What is the exact physical connection between the modem and the routers?

Using the latest firmware. My WRT54GS (connected through a LAN cable) seems to randomely disconnect me from the internet for no apparent reason. For some reason, it can't find the DNS even though my cable modem shows that a connection is there. The only way I can get it working again is unplugging the router, reconnecting the, going into the router status menu and hitting DHCP release, then DHCP renew.
I'm not sure whats causing this though. Any help would be appreciated.

My GSv6  will function perfectly until my cable ISP decides to change my WAN IP address.   When they do that the router will drop internet connection  and I have to go throught the reboot process for the modem and router.  Sometimes this works and all is well again until the next ip change, but other times there are still sporadic outages.

i have a Linksys Wrt54gs connected to a Cable modem.
it worked for about 8 months.
My kid pressed a button by accident and now it won't work.
    the router just keeps resetting.
    i unplugged everything.
conencted 1 computer, and everything is fine.
    Received DHCP address.
Once i plug in a second computer it starts rebooting.
Both computers are set to DHCP.
NO internet connection is connected at this time for troubleshooting purposes.
Nothing is connected to the ethernet port on the Linksys router (port for internet access), only 1 and 2 are connected.
i reset the router and still nothing.
i can connect 1 computer via wireless and 1 computer via direct connection and all is good. Once 2 devices are connected via direct connections it starts resetting.
i can even connect the modem to the router (for internet access), and connect to the linksys router via wireless from my computer and get internet access.
But once i direct connect 2 connections, the router starts resetting.
i have reset and reboot it with every combination i can think of.

Its good that its working now.
If it happens again, try this :
Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE !!!
Do this when the computer os connected to the router with a cable.
than on the computer open Internet Explorer and in the Address Bar type : 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.
It'll ask for the password. The default password is admin.
Once in the setup page. Click on the Wireless tab.
In there Change the Network Mode to mixed. And change the SSID to your name.
Change the Channel to 11. And Enable the SSID Broadcast.
Save the settings here. After that Click on Wireless Security and configure it accordingly and Save the settrings.
Than click on Advanced Wireless Settings. In there Disable the SES function.
What is the firmware on the router ?

  • WRT54G connected to my Bell HSE Sympatico SpeedStream Modem.

I have my WRT54G connected to my Bell HSE Sympatico SpeedStream Modem. It all worked fine until I tried to set the WRT54G to forward some ports so that I can get to one of the PCs from outside via the NET. I am running Windows XP pro on the PC After I set the post forwarding I still could not see the router from the Net. It seems that the Bell Modem is “blocking” something> I would appreciate some insight to solve this issue.

There should not be a problem if you are using either the speedstream 4200 or 5300 as they are standard modems.  The 6300 and the 6520 are modem/routers so you may have to change a setting.  You can also post on the Bell Forum.

  • HP Computer won't sleep when wrt54g connected

My HP Pavilion m9340f running Vista 64 bit will not enter a sleep mode on its own and wakes unexpectedly while connected to my wrt54g firmware version 4.21.1 10/17/2005.
If I disconnect the router and connect the computer directly to the cable modem, the sleep mode works fine. Does any one know of a way to fix this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The problem was an advanced setting in the power plan I was using. The default for the balanced  and power saving plan is to "prevent idling to sleep" when sharing media and I had allowed media sharing on my pc.
I went to control panel  > power options > change plan settings > change advanced power settings > multmedia settings > when sharing media - and select allow the computer to sleep
I can restore default the settings when I actually am sharing media

  • WRT54G connecting to Netgear fvs338 Firewall

Has anyone connected a WRT54G behind a Netgear Firewall.  I can't seem to get the Lynksys to connect to the Netgear Firewall.  I don't need the router but I do need the wireless.  I have to use the Netgear FVS for work.  Any help appreciated!!!

Okay… configure the linksys router according IP range of firewall, if firewall is running on e.g. 192.168.1.1 and change LAN IP of router to 192.168.1.2 and disable the DHCP server and save the settings, make LAN to LAN connection between firewall and router and power cycle the n/w check whether it works or not…

  • WRT54G connect to Comcast cable - SUCCESS

There are so many of us asking for help to get WRT54Gs to connect to the internet, I thought I'd post a success notice.
Mine is a V5.  It has progressed from simple connecting to encrypted connecting, and has been running several days at each.
What seems to have made the difference was:
    1. Update the firmware to the latest level, and
    2. Change the LAN address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1.
Since doingthe above I have seen no need to clone the MAC address of any pc (even though I'm dealing w/ Comcast and that seems to be a "default" suggestion when Comcast is mentioned).  I've connected using both LAN cable and wirelessly from a Vista pc w/ built-in, XP pc with built-in, and XP pc with PCMCIA card (all G-types)
Initially I just did unsecured to see if it would work for a few days.  I had never gotten more than about 2 days life out of any setup prior to this. After that, I secured it, and it's still running fine.
Thanks to Linksys Tech Support.  I had already done the firmware upgrade on my own, but the suggestion of changing the address came from you.  Quite frankly, I got that suggestion a few weeks back before the firmware upgrade, and it didn't seem to be as successful then.  I think BOTH are needed.

When I looked at Status, I had a Comcast IP.  I changed it to 2.1 because you Tech Support told me to.  You gave me a pretty good explaination of why it might be important to do that, and the only thing didn't jive was that Comcast didn't SEEM to be presenting me with 192.168.1.1.  However, since it works and since I have a policy of not fighting success, I simply moved on.
I currently have 98.196.142.30 coming in.  Not sure if that has been the same all of this time or if it's been re-assigned at some point.  Since I've had no power fluctuations I'm inclined to think it's been the same.

  • WRT54GS Connection trouble

I have a WRT54GS v 4 router and every now and then i simply cannot connect to the internet with it however this most recent problem i cannot resolve and am tired of the problems, i am not using wireless atm i have it hooked right to the router and this problem is on multiple computers/OSs, my ISP provides a direct Ethernet connection i do not have a cable or DSL modem, if i bypass the router everything works fine
basically it will work fine then i will loose connection i cannot get to web pages, but i do have some limited connectivity i can sometimes resolve names and get a waiting for reply. the router is getting an IP from my isp i can release and renew and it picks one up fine but i still cant connect. my ISP does not block or detect routers and says it should work fine (in fact there are like 4 of these in my apartment complex).
in the past  resetting the router via the button in the back simetimes works . sometimes it just randomly clears up. i have updated to the latest linksys firmware and then i tried a 3rd party firmware both have the same problems, ive played with the mtu no luck. on occasion i have gotten the router to finally connect but it is incredibly slow. not like modem slow more like extreme latency slow where if it manages to make a connection things download fast but its always waiting for a reply and times out on lots of things.
    can somebody help me?

in the typical style of my router it cleared itself up randomly just up and worked again. and in typical style the electric company decided to have a blip the very next day. back to the same it connects but is sooo slow constantly waiting for reply yadda yadda..
Any suggestions to improve it's performance?

  • WRT54G connected to a RV082 router

    Fellows,
We have installed a RV082 VPN Server in our office and now we need to connect a WRT54G just to get Wifi access to our network. We have tried several things but we have not been able to have access to the internet using PC´s via Wireless, I mean, We have been able to get IP´s assigned from the main RV082 router to the wireless PCs via the WRT54G, however, we have not been able to access the internet from those PC´s.
I guess what we need is a complet HowTo related to the connection of one WRT54G acting just as a swith/Access Point but not as a router, which also could explain how to get internet access from the wireless PC´s.
Could somebody help us with this HowTo procedure??

    We have solved the issue.
Basically the main aspects to take into account are:
    1. Basic Setup/Internet Connection Type: Disable
    2. Applications/DHCP Server: Disable
    3. Security/Firewall Protection: Disable
    4. Wireless/Wireless Mode: AP
    5. Setup/Advanced Routing: Disable
    6. Setup/Local IP Address: Must be within the block of IPs used for the DHCP at the main Router (RV082 in our case)
All the other parameters configured normally.
    All Done .. Case solved.
    Thanks for your support

  • WRT54GS connection to Sony Blu Ray BDP-S370

I just purchased a Sony Blu Ray player and am trying to use a wired connection to my WRT54GS.  I was initially unable to establish a connection at all, but after chatting with tech support at Sony, we were able to get it to connect.  Shortly after I hung up the phone, we were watching a youtube video and the player dropped the connection and I haven't been able to get it re-establish a connection.  The only thing that I did do was turn on our computer, which accessed the WRT54GS wirelessly, and I'm wondering if the IP addresses are conflicting.  Can anyone tell me how to fix IP addresses, or suggest another solution?
    Thanks,
    -Erik

Turns out that I had a flaky LAN card on my blu-ray unit.  A new unit and everything is working well.

  • WRT54GS Connection Problems

As the title states, I use a WRT54GS v.6 Wireless Router.
Now, the problem is that my router randomly disconnects.  It will be working fine for about 2 weeks and then it would just disconnect all of a sudden.  The computer appears to be trying to reestablish the connection, but the messages keep bouncing back and forth from an error message the the internet has been disconnected, to a message telling me that it has been reestablished.  This continues endlessly.
I also use a Siemens Speedstream 4100 router, on to which I have established it to "Bridged Mode".  My type of Internet connection is PPPoE.
A Firmware upgrade might be the answer to this too.  If so, explain to be the proper procedure in which to download and configure the router to the correct firmware.  Thank you.

Yes, you know the answer, if you experience frequent wireless connection the first thing you shoul do is Upgrade the router's firmware...
Download the Firmware from here , make sure you select the correct version number...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • WRT54G connection error!!!!

    Hi,
When i plug the network cable into my computer thru the wireless router the error says "no connectivity or limited connection" then i cannot go to the main setup. Plus the power light indicator keeps on blinking is it normal? can you plus help me as soon as possible...
Thank you very much and more power

No if the routers power LED does not stop blinking unplug the power and wait 2 or 3 minutes.  Then plug it back in.  It should blink for a few seconds while the firmware loads up and does the self diagnostic test.  I had this issue on a WRT54GS and this worked but on the second time (a few days later) I had to do a hard reset by pushing/holding the reset button for 30 seconds or more.  Then is went back to normal.

  • WRT54GS connection using Windows Me

    Hello,
A friend gave me his old Dell Insperon 8000 (using Windows Millennium) for my daughter to use. It needs a wireless card, so my tech friend installed a Trendnet 54Mbps wireless card that connects fine at his shop (router unknown). The problem is it won't connect to my Linksys WRT54GS router at home (switches between 100% and 0% signal strength, but mostly no signal)). My newer Dell Insperon 1525 (using Windows Vista) connect fine automatically. Do I have to change the settings on my Linksys router to get the older Millennium Dell to stay connected? If so, how do I go about it? Thanks.

Login to the linksys setup page and under Wireless tab, change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz.Under Advance Wireless Settings tab,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...Recheck the SSID(name) and Security key and then, try to locate the Wireless Network on the ME computer and connect it...
Which Wireless Security you are using on the router. You can also try to lower down the security level to WEP and then, try to connect.

  • Can anyone help with a WRT54G connection issue - it just stopped working

I have a Dell running Windows XP.  I have a DSL connection with a Westell 6100 modem connected to a Linksys WRT54G router connected to my main computer.  I use the router for a wireless connection to my laptop.  This setup worked fine for years - until a few days ago.  I no longer have internet access on my laptop and main computer.
If I connect from the modem directly to the main computer, I have internet access.  But as soon as I put the router back in - I have no access.
All the appropriate lights on the modem and router are lit.  When I do try to access the internet I get the dreaded PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED.  When I run the diagnostic, the error log shows: "Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed".  I don’t know if this is a standard catch-all error or not?
Everything was fine until a few days ago when I just lost access.  Do I need a new router?  I hate to buy one and then find out something was corrupted on my computer instead. :-(
    Thanks!

When connected from modem to PC directly (no router) and I type in ip[config /all (don't know if this is what i should do) -- I get:
    IP Address 192.168.1.100
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers 192.168.1.1
Does this mean I should try to change the LinkSys Router?
I will go look there next.
