WRT54G - deleting unsecured wireless network

I was able to add a Wireless Network, and thought I had it secured, however; it was only an unsecured wireless network.  How can I delete if from my Wireless Network List...  I have attempted to change it to a secured Network, but this did not work and I cannot figure out how to delete it.  This network is not on my Home Computer.  In Network Connections I only have  a Local Area Connection and whenI check Network Places, I only show Internet Connections IE: My Websites on MSN & My shared Documents.
However; my laptop has a list of wireless networks to choose from.
All are secured Networks, except one --
                  linksys -  Unsecured wireless network.
Then I have a second linksys_SES_612 = which is security enabled, however; has "limited or no connectivity"
Yes, I entered two linksys wireless networks...  I wanted a Secure Network...  Now I have it, but I can't connect to it!!Does this mean that since my home computer is wired and the main access tothe internet, it doesn't have Wireless Networks to chose from?

on the laptop , click on start >> control panel >> network connections >> right click on wireless network connection >> properties >> wireless networks tab >> clear the preferred network list  ..

  • Unexpected 2nd (unsecured) wireless network

I don't remember all the nitty gritty but I think somehow I'd unintentionally created two wireless networks with my new router (model WRT54G v8), assuming that it is possible.
I used LELA and successfully created a secured wireless network with a SSID of "zfutbol".  I successfully added a couple of laptops to the network.
Everything was fine until I started playing with the wireless network security method.  I inadverdently set "zfutbol" to unsecure.  I tried to restore the previously established secured network using LELA and successfully changed the network back to a secured network.  However all of a sudden I started 8to see an additional unsecured wireless network named "linksys" with the same strength as the secured "zfutbol" network.  The unsecured "linksys" network also appears in my preferred network list.  Two things suggest that I was the one who created this unsecured network: 1) I never saw "linksys" until I tried to restore "zfutbol" security, and 2) "linksys" has the same signal strength (100%) as "zfutbol".
LELA only shows that "zfutbol" is my secured network.  My question is that how do I verify that "linksys" was indeed created by me?  If I did create "linksys", how do I delete it permanently?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just stumbled upon this link on forum from google search and your explanation is excellent.. and good job.
Now, I have the following scenario and trying to get your suggestions/inputs.
I have WRTP54G (Rotuer with 2 phone ports ver : 3.1.17 ) My voip provider is viatalk and comcast is my cable internet provider who gave me a modem and everything works fine.
Now I switched my internet to "AT&T" and got wireless router with modem 2wire brand model : 2701HG-B.
I have to connect the 2wire router to get internet access and I have linksys router with phone ports, can I follow your instructions and connect the "ethernet out of 2wire router" to "internet port of linkysrouter" and disable router on my linksys and will still my voip phones work?.
Note: I have full access to my linksys router including phone configurations etc.,
thank you for your feedback.., If this has been posted already please accept my aplogies and provide the link.

  • How can I delete a wireless network from my MacBoork Ai

How can I delete a wireless network from my MacBoork Air.
I had set up a WEP Network but I need to set up a WPA (personal) network now and i cant seem to change the WEP network to a WPA2 network.
Thank you for any help you can provide me.
    LShaps

The MacBook Air will autodetect WEP and WPA security changes and should allow you to reconnect again. If the password stored in the Mac is wrong, it will ask you to enter it again.
With that said, to forget a network do the following:
    - Go to the Apple Menu and select System Preferences
    - Click on the Network icon
    - Highlight the Airport / WiFi entry (sepending on 10.6 vs 10.7)
    - Click the Advanced button at the bottom
    - Make sue the Airport / WiFi tab is selected
    - Click on the network name you want to forget
    - Press the minus button at the bottom of the list.
You may also want to consider restarting if you are having this issue.

  • IPad 2 can only connect to unsecured Wireless network.  It won't connect to my secured network at home or at work

Two days ago my ipad 2 with (wifi only) will not connect to my secured network even though it show's up as available with a strong signal.  It keeps rejecting my password.  I brought the Ipad to work and the same issue.  However I am able to connect to an unsecured wireless network with no issue.  Is this a network/router issue or an ipad issue?  If it's a network issue what is the fix? calling my internet provider to change router settings?

    - I've used the correct pw (it worked till 2 days ago)
    - I use road runner from Time warner, not sure of the mac address filtering
    -Security is WPA PSK.
I called road runner to request they remove my pw and see if i can access my wireless if that works which i believe it will then it has to be a security issue.  I'm using a 802.11n wifi access point, if that means anything.

  • Legality of using an unsecured wireless network

If you pop open your laptop and see it has found a wireless connection and you know it isn't a public access point, is there anything wrong with using it?

I pay for my own DSL service, and I lock down my wireless access, so I really don't have a dog in this fight, but if it's not considered to be theft of services at Starbucks, then it would seem to me (granted, I'm no lawyer) that it would be incumbent upon the owner of the service to inform the freeloader that it was NOT an open public access point, if the owner doesn't want the freeloader to use it.
No, as Starbucks is explicitly providing wireless Internet for customer use (and it's not free, either.)
After such notification is given in writing, then I could see continued use being considered theft of service. I've read the analogies here of "if the front door of the neighbor's house is unlocked, is it okay to take his TV?" But how about this analogy? "If the neighbor sits his 60" HDTV inside the unlocked front door of your house, is it okay to keep/use the TV?"
This is the same argument posited by the first satellite "pirates" who used the argument that the signals were being broadcast into their backyards so they were free to obtain the equipment capable of receiving and viewing it without paying.
Though signal providers then scrambled, the "it's being broadcast, I can receive it" paradigm has been shot down in court again and again. Look at analog cell phones in the U.S. - it was illegal to listen to the unencrypted phone calls, and the U.S. Government enforced this by making sale of receivers that could receive the band in question unavailable to the general public.
A TechRepublic blog (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/10things/?p=356) stated, in part:
Many states have criminal laws that prohibit accessing any computer or network without the owner’s permission. For example, in Texas, the statute is Penal Code section 33.02, Breach of Computer Security. It says, “A person commits an offense if the person knowingly accesses a computer, computer network or computer system without the effective consent of the owner.” The penalty grade ranges from misdemeanor to first degree felony (which is the same grade as murder), depending on whether the person obtains benefit, harms or defrauds someone, or alters, damages, or deletes files.
The wording of most such laws encompasses connecting to a wireless network without explicit permission, even if the wi-fi network is unsecured. The inclusion of the culpable mental state of “knowing” as an element of the offense means that if your computer automatically connects to your neighbor’s wireless network instead of your own and you aren’t aware of it, you haven’t committed a crime — but if you decide to hop onto the nearest unencrypted wi-fi network to surf the Internet, knowing full well that it doesn’t belong to you and no one has given you permission, you could be prosecuted under these laws.
A Michigan man was arrested for using a café’s wi-fi network (which was reserved for customers) from his car in 2007. Similar arrests have been made in Florida, Illinois, Washington, and Alaska.
Bottom line - pay for your own Internet and encrypt your network if you have a wireless access point or router to stay legal.

  • Unsecured Wireless Network

I just reset my AEBS and it kept saying base station password is set to "public" so I changed it to another word with same amount of letters to be safe.
I'm hard wired to my WinXP desktop and wireless on WinXP laptop and Mac G4 Powerbook.
    Powerbook controls base station.
My WinXP laptop keeps warning me that my network is unsecured and data can be viewed.....BEFORE when I tried adding a password (which was herpcs21) and setting it to WEP .....I was able to access with password on Mac all night and then updated port forward section and then suddenly it kept telling me password was wrong. No wireless could connect.Hard wired pc worked though.
So I want my network to be secure but I don't want to go through this whole password trouble again.
How to I secure it and still be able to connect easily on wireless pc and mac?

The password you just reset is for the administration of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), not for WEP or WPA encryption.

WEP or WPA encryption is only for wireless connectivity. It has nothing to do with connecting via a wire.
So I want my network to be secure but I don't want to go through this whole password trouble again.
How to I secure it and still be able to connect easily on wireless pc and mac?
To secure you wireless network, you can use either WEP or WPA. WPA is preferred. You setup security using the AirPort Admin Utility which you will find in the /Applications/Utilities folder on your Mac. Then when connecting with the Mac, you enter the WPA password (only once if you elect to save the password in your KeyChain.) Similiarly, you can save the password after entering it the first time on the PCs.

  • How do I delete a wireless network from my "keychain?"  I need my Mac to not remember it at all.

I am not able to get onto a friends wi-fi because we entered the wep incorrectly and it saved it that way.  I need to forget the network entirely and redo it

Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Network
Click on AirPort or Wi-Fi on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Locate the name of the network and click on it to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to delete it
    Click OK, then click Apply
    Open Macintosh HD
    Open Applications
    Open Utilities
    Open KeyChain Access
Locate the name of the wireless network and click it to highlight
    Delete that entry
    Restart your Mac

  • WRT54G & XBOX 360 Wireless Networking Adapter-Router doesn't see my SSID

I purchased a XBOX 360 networking adapter yesterday.  I hooked it up and serched for networks and it doesn't see my SSID through the linksys router.  Before I purchased the 360 adapter, I could hard hook it to the router and it worked fine.  I called 360 and they suggested that I open my MAC on the Linksys Router so that it would recognize it, but I do not know how to do that.  I know how to get into 192.168.1.1, but don't want to do anything crazy.  Please advise. I'm not a novice, but not an advanced router owner.  Thanks,
    WRT54G v.8

SSID Broadcast should be Enabled on your router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab-
Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...SSID Broadcast should be Enabled...Check what is your SSID(change the SSID if it is Linksys)...Click Save Settings if you have changed anything...
Click on the subtab Wireless Security, if the Security Mode is WPA/WPA2 change it to WEP, if it is WEP take not of Key1(this is your wireless security)...
    X-Box Setting :
    1. Connect the appropriate wireless network adapter to the console. On the Xbox, a Wi-Fi adapter that connects to the Ethernet port (sometimes also called a wireless network bridge) must be used. Alternatively, the Xbox 360 is also designed to work with certain Wi-Fi game adapters that connect to a USB port.
    2. Turn on the console and navigate to the wireless settings screen. On the Xbox, the menu path is "Settings -> Network Settings -> Advanced -> Wireless -> Settings" On the Xbox 360, the menu path is "System -> Network Settings -> Edit Settings."
    3. Set the SSID (network name) on the Xbox to match that of the wireless router. If your wireless router has enabled SSID broadcast, the SSID name should appear pre-selected on the Xbox display. Otherwise, select the "Specify Unlisted Network" option and enter the SSID there.
    4. Specify "Infrastructure" as the Network Mode. (Infrastructure is the mode used by wireless routers.)
    5. Set the Security Type to match that of the wireless router. If your router uses WPA encryption and the type of adapter connected to the Xbox does not support WPA, you will need to change your router settings to use WEP encryption instead.
Note that the standard Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter supports WPA while the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740) only supports WEP.
    6. Save your settings and verify the network is functional.
On the Xbox, the Wireless Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made with the wireless router, and the Connect Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made through the Internet to Xbox Live.
On the Xbox 360, use the "Test Xbox Live Connection" option instead.

How do I delete a network configuration?

Are you asking how to delete the network name and password? - you can use the Airport Utility to delete a password and not use security but you cannot delete a network name - you can only change it - but to remove the network name from showing up on the list of local networks in the area, you would have to turn off the wireless on the Express or Extreme which ever is the primary router

  • Defaulting to connect to unsecured wireless networks

I noticed that the iPhone's wifi defaults to unsecured networks, even if there are stronger secured networks that are saved in your phone. As an example, by my house I can view optimum wifi in the list, but it is too far away to actually connect to. However, my phone will try to connect to it instead of the house's secured wifi network which is saved in the phone. I am suggesting that secured networks be given priority over unsecured ones, or it should at least be a feature that you can toggle in your wifi settings. Thank you for your time.

Choose the unsecured network by taping on the blue arrow, then hit "forget this network" explained in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3867

Your device remembers the network and login information so you can automatically reconnect to that subscription Wi-Fi network whenever you are in range.
If you don't want your device to automatically join the subscription Wi-Fi network, you can disable the Auto-Join behavior in by tapping the chevron next to the subscription Wi-Fi network name:

  • Unable to connect to a secure wireless network - Event ID: 8002 Task Category: AcmConnection..., Event ID: 11006, Event ID: 11006

    Hi,
    I have a Dell Latitude E6440 running Win 7
Enterprise 64 on a domain. It will connect to any unsecured network, and it can see the secured network in the list when I click the wireless connection icon on the system tray. When I go to manage wireless networks, the secured network does not show
up (and thus, I cannot delete the network to try to re-add it). Normally, we would add the secure network here. I click Add, give the name in the correct syntax, add the needed information (WPA/2-Enterprise, EAS or TKIP), and hit Next, it immediately returns
with "An unexpected error occurred". A similar thing happens when I hit Connect from the list of available networks that pops up when I open the system tray icon: it says it was unable to connect, when I hit troubleshoot, it says that it could not
identify the problem. The event log shows the error below. I haven't been able to find any resolutions here or elsewhere that address the fact that I can connect to unsecured wireless networks, but not secured wireless networks.
    Other notable troubleshooting steps:
Uninstalled/Reinstalled wireless adapter with the latest driver
Other laptops are able to access the same secure wireless network
The first WLAN-AutoConfig error in the event log was Event ID: 12013, attempting a 802.1x authentication. Then Event ID: 11006; stating "Explicit Eap failure received". After a few days of alternating all 3 errors, they started to only error on
    Event ID 8002.

  • Need help connecting to BEFW11S4 wireless network

A friend I visit often has a BEFW11S4 router. Other friends who visit connect immediately to the unsecured wireless network. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons I'm unable to connect with either of my laptops, so have to plug in the LAN. This is the only place I've ever had a problem connecting to a wireless network.
My laptops are Toshiba Satellites, running Windows XP Home & Office, respectively. Sometimes they won't even recognize the network, or when they do, just won't connect. I've gone through the tutorial and all settings numerous times, turned off the firewall, turned off Norton and still no luck. Any help getting me connected is appreciated. Thanks.

In your computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete any existing entry for your friend's network.   Reboot your computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and add your friends SSID.  Then select this SSID and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  You should login automatically when computer boots up.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't connect to wireless network but wife can...

Hi. I've just bought a Macbook pro. I am trying to connect it to a wireless network. The macbook finds the network (and others), but after I give the correct password it says 'authentication failed'. The weird thing (to me) is that my wife can connect to the same network with her macbook with no problems. These are my Airport details (no working connection)

    Two things I'd check first:
1 - in your router, do you have mac address filtering turned on? If so, add the mac address (Airport id) of your MacBookPro to the 'Wireless Station Access List' in your router. You can find your Airport id under *System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced > Ethernet* .
2 - in your MacBookPro, turn Airport OFF. Then go into *System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced.* In the Preferred Networks box, delete the wireless network you are having trouble authenticating with. Click OK, then Apply. Exit System Prefs. Then turn Airport ON. Find the network; re-enter your password. See if that fixes things.

  • Trouble Connecting To Wireless Network

    Greetings,
New iTouch with the new 3.0 software installed.
    iMac with Leopard 10.5.8
Using a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G, settings:
    - Home wireless network does not broadcast SSID
    - WEP with 10-key password
    - MAC filter enabled
    Issue 1:
I entered my iTouch MAC address into the router's MAC filter list
Using the wireless on iTouch entered the SSID and Password
Result: Does not connect. What am I missing?
    Issue 2:
Do I have to enter the network password every time or can I save the password in my ITouch?
    Thanks for your help,
    Matt

    Thanks for the help,
So, my kids don't use the Internet function with their DS, and the Wii takes WPA . . .
I changed my wireless security settings to WPA2 with AES algorithms.
    Still didn't work . . .
I then had to disable the MAC address filtering and . . . Presto! Connection Heaven.
Don't like having to had disabled my MAC address filtering though. I double checked the MAC in the list for the iTouch and it was fine.
Any known issues with the iTouch and MAC address filtering in wireless routers?
    Thanks everyone,
    Matt

  • Why won't my time capsule show up when I scan for a wireless network when I plug in the ethernet cable from my comcast modem?

I just setup my cable and internet at my new place yesterday thru comcast.  The internet works when it is plugged directly from my modem to my iMac but when I try to plug the modem up to my time capsule to set up wireless and go through air port utilites it can not find my time capsule

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
