WRT54G dies about once a day

I have a WRT54G V6 with 1.02.5 firmware. About once a day it stops
talking to the attached devices, both wireless and wired. They can't
ping it or connect via HTTP. The WRT54G still has power. This was
happening about once a month (tolerable) for some time. About a week
ago, it started happening about once a day, at highly variable times
of the day.
Any thoughts on a solution, other than buying a new router.
Chuck

I also have this router, ver. 5 and I am having the same issues.  I have a computer wired directly to the router, with 2 other desktops, and a laptop that access it wirelessly.  One of the computers that I'm having the problem with is using a Linksys adapter.  All 3 wireless computers have had problems, and recently the computer that is directly attached to the router has started having problems.
I tried changing the channel, no luck.  I have not updated the firmware because after looking around, that doesn't seem to help the problem.  It worked fine for 2 years prior.  Here's the kicker that happened today.  One of my computers could access the internet, while one of the others (the one with the linksys adapter) could not.  My wife was steadily working on her laptop, while the desktop that I was working on showed no signal.  I came down to the computer that is directly attached and looked at the DHCP list, and NOTHING is listed.  Even the computer that is directly attached.  Even as I type this, only 1 wireless computer is listed.  My other 2 are not, although they are running, and currently have internet access.
Sometimes the signal is only lost for a minute or so, and sometimes I have to unplug it.  Just to be clear, I'm not just losing my internet, I am losing my wireless signal all together.  I'm sure its not an issue with walls or floors in the way because I have one of those computers less than 15 feet away in the same room as the router.  I'm also pretty sure that its not an issue with other electronics, because I live in a rural area and my 2 neighbors are over 200 feet from me.
Here's another strange little tidbit regarding my connection.  If I go to Facebook on one of the wireless computers, that seems to trigger a dropped connection.  I don't think its possible, but I'll throw it out there for some of you smarter than me.  Is it possible that a particular website, or type of website could trigger anything?  I don't think it has anything to do with how much is transmitted, because I can log onto Netflix and watch a movie, and never have a problem.
I hope Linksys monitors these message boards and can come up with a fix for this one.

  • Last week Firefox was crashing about once a day, now it has "not responding" after about 5 minutes on any site. Help please??

Last week Firefox began "crashing" about once a day. Today it started not responding about 5 minutes after I sign in, no matter what site I am on. My son could not do any school work (online program) because it kept freezing. My computer is protected from malware and viruses (supposedly) I've downloaded the latest version of Firefox and ran a scan, nothing shows up. Please help. Thanks!

  • Airport connection drops about once a day..

is the problem in my macbook or in my airport?? when i go to look at the airport, the green light is still on. help would be appreciated.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hola -
If you go to your System Preferences/Network/Airport and check the box "Show Airport status in menu bar" you'll be able to see the strength of the signal in your top menu. 4 bars will equal a strong signal. Monitor this throughout the day ...if it's working fine for most of the time then I'd suspect the wireless router as the problem. Also, if the signal is very weak (1-2 bars) then you may indeed lose your connections at times.

  • Download Speed on Westell 327W Goes to Almost 0 About Once / Day

Installation has worked fine for 2 1/2 years with no changes in computers, phone, phone lines, type of Verizon service, anything else.  Normal speeds, according to the Westell homepage, is 1792 / 448.  Over the last 6 weeks, the download speed, but NOT the upload speed, drops to about 0 about once per day.  Specifically, speeds, according to Westell homepage, drops to 32 / 448.  Powering down the modem and bringing it back up restores normal speeds, but then, usually within 24 hours, down it goes again.  Do I just need a new modem?

It kinda sounds like it.   But before yourun out and spend the money, do you have a friend that has dsl?  Maybe you can use his router to test out your line?  Have you called tech (nightmare) support and asked them to run a line test on your dsl service?
If you happen to get another router to try, make sure you enter your user name and password to access your account.  make sure he knows his to re-enter it back to his modem too.

  • Crashes Once a Day

After years of flawless performance, my eMac has developed an annoying habit of crashing about once a day. It normally happens soon after the first start up of the day, or after it's been sleeping a while. It tends not to crash again after restarting.
The machine is not doing any heavy lifting. Safari, E-mail & Word, that's about it on any given day. But something is causing it to crash. Minimizing a document into the Dock or maximizing the e-mail out of the Dock tend to trigger it, but just moving something around on the desktop can do it to. First the desktop is unresponsive to the Finder, and after about 20 seconds the Finder quits.
It's had all the software updates for both OS & Word. I've run Repair Permissions & DiskWarrior, but it hasn't made any difference. I can still expect it to crash unexpectedly once a day.
I really like to know what could be causing this problem. Any suggestions welcome.

    Glenn2,
That is puzzling. I'm afraid I'm going to throw the kitchen sink at you in what follows, since I'm not sure how frequently I'll be checking into the Apple Discussions in the next few days.
While trying to figure the problem, you could as a workaround avoid the crash on startup / wake from sleep by leaving the Mac running all the time; use System Preferences -> Energy Saver to set system sleep to Never, uncheck the box for 'put hard drive to sleep when possible', and set the Mac to sleep the display only after some amount of time that matches how you use yours (I have my Macs set to sleep the display after 20 minutes).
Do you have Times RO font installed? That will cause problems, especially with Word. See Times RO failures for the fix. If not Times RO, Word has a track record of dealing poorly with corrupted or missing fonts. The best source I know for font issues is Kurt Lang – Font Management.
On average, how much time elapses between starting the computer and having it crash? If it's several hours and you have Safari open all the time, be aware that Safari (especially earlier versions) has a memory leak problem, where it grabs and locks up increasing amounts of the computer's RAM memory. That will cause things to slow down (especially Safari itself) and could eventually even crash the computer. Quitting and restarting Safari every two hours or so will help avoid that.
Do you have the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your eMac? Try running that in extended diagnostics mode and see if it reports any physical problems.
Connecting the Mac to an Uninterpretable Power Supply (UPS) and using Energy Saver's UPS tab to shut the Mac down gracefully in case of a power outage is a useful precaution whether you shut down at night or not. Even a low-end UPS will protect the Mac from power outages and glitches (which can do more damage to the hard drive than an outright power failure). The APC BackUPS 350 model can be found for around US$40, sometimes less on sale.
When you're run Disk Utility, did you check the hard drive's SMART status in the bottom of the DU window? If it reads anything other than 'verified', that would point to a physical problem with the hard drive. If the problem is with a disk sector outside of the disk's directory, Disk Warrior won't necessarily pick that up. If there are a handful of bad disk sectors, you could revive the drive's usefulness by reformatting with the write zeros option; that will cause the hard drive to update it's firmware map of bad disk sectors to avoid using. Obviously, you want to have a bootable backup of your hard drive before reformatting (you want a bootable backup anyway, of course). CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper! are great tools for creating bootable backups onto an external Firewire hard drive.
If the hard drive hasn't accumulated enough small problems over the years to cause the problem (power glitches without a UPS do add up over time), it's possible the RAM modules may have bad address locations. You can use Memtest to check the physical RAM; follow that utility's instructions about running in single-user mode to get the most thorough results.
How much free space is on the hard drive? If the drive has less than 1 GB free space, you could be running out of room for the OS's cache files. Less than 5 GB can cause problems with burning DVD-R discs or doing an Archive and Install as a last resort.
You can also look over the general tips in Travis A. - Regular Maintenance / General Troubleshooting.
    Good luck!

  • AirDisk Falling off the network once a day

My AirDisk fall off the network about once a day, not available to any computers, Mac or PC. Restarting the Airport Base Station brings it back up, but that's no solution.
It's a Cavalry 500 GB USB 2 drive (SATA USB bridge on the inside)

I had this, it happened to me about 3 or 4 times a week. I had it attached to an extreme which was running a WDS network. I decided just to live with it since I only needed the drive once a week or so.
For other reasons I recently changed the extreme to a single station network and did the same with the other extreme, since then my airdisk has not dropped out.
I'm not sure whether it was due to the WDS network or more likely that something wasn't configured just right.

  • WRT54GS stops connecting about once a week.

We have a WRT54GS here at work and it goes to 6 computers, of course it first goes into a Linksys switch for the last 2 computers. This router was new about 2 months back. We rarely use the wireless feature so that is not really a problem, however my boss will come out in the shop about once or twice a week or sometimes as long as two weeks and say he can't get on the internet.
My bosses computer and the main office computers are all plugged directly into the router. Two computers of lesser importance are on the switch. Usually I can just reboot the router and then it is fine. Sometimes I have to push the reset button and then reboot and fiddle around with it and it starts working. This has been happening ever since we bought this router. Any suggestions?
(Mod Note: We understand your frustration but please bashing isn’t gonna help. Thanks!)

make sure that the router firmware is latest and change the MTU settings on the router to 1400...let me know whether this makes any difference..

  • My iphone 4 started making a sound like "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does it at least once a day.  I've reset my phone, used icloud to restore, and it made the sound again upon startup.  Help!  This is so annoying.

My iphone 4 started making a sound like a "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does this at least once a day.  It started about a month ago.  Anyone got any ideas?

Mine does this also, seemingly randomly several times throughout the day.  I do not have this sound as any of my alerts and it does not seem to denote anything like a message, reminder, etc.  I do have "Trapster" on my phone and I went in and tweaked the settings there.  Will repost if that has any efect.

  • Having to reset WIfi at least once a day.

    Hi.
ive already posted in the other forum about broadband.  But the fault is with my BT home hub 3.
i have to reset the wifi at least once a day as the speeds go to less than 1mb am I'm also unable to connect to the ip addresses of devices on my wifi network such as my chromecast and Apple TV.
I reset the wifi by changing wifi channel and then back again.  I then get full speed.
i did a factory reset and it lasted a day or so.  Will BT supply a new Hub as this one is clearly faulty.  Or did I have to get my own?
    thanks....
    ian.

have you tried selecting a wireless channel manually possibly channel 13

  • What's happening if my Macbook Air beeps about once every minute?

I just upgraded my Macbook Air to OSX 10.8.1 the other day. Besides that, I diddn't install any new applications. Today, my macbook beeps about once every minute even when I muted it. What is going on?

ok, it turns out that this is just a mistake. the beeping noise doesn't actually come from my laptop... sorry about this. Please disregard the question. I love my mac, and Apple is amazing.

    Seasons Greetings,
Can someone please clarify/confirm what I should have in My Settings in Subscription Preferences.
    They are currently:
Always subscribe to topics I create: Yes
Always subscribe to topics I reply to: Yes
Send subscription emails: Once per day
It's the last option that doesn't seem to work for me. Yesterday after spending a bit of time helping out all the new nano owners I opened Mail and has 67 posts yesterday, with 25 today so far.
Here's an example of 5 separate replies to one subject (numbered by me):

I have some with more than 5 but I don't want to bore you too much
What I really expected with 'Send subscription emails: Once per day' was a digest listing all replies to all posts for a 24 hour period.
Have I misunderstood or is something wrong?

  • Unity Guru's - Can I automatically sync WMI's more than once a day?

Hey guys, I been fighting this new Unity/Microsoft MAPI/CDO bug (CSCti70702)/ KB2405611) with my Exchange 2010 servers.  One of the symptoms is sporadic MWI on/off triggers to CM.  So I’ve had to manually sync the MWI’s via the Telephone Integration Manager.  Can anyone think of a way to run a resync job every x number of minutes until Microsoft can get this fixed?  The TIM will only do it once a day.
    Thanks everyone!

When I mention flooding the ports, I brought that up since I've seen any number of Unity systems (large and small) in production environments and have helped a number of users here in the forum that do not dedicate ports to MWI.  Instead, it's not uncommon to find situations where all ports are set up to do everything.  So, it's good that you've at least got some ports dedicated to MWI. Honestly, if you have 900 subscribers and over 96 ports - you would never run into this anyway.  I've done installs where there are 4000+ users that only have 96 ports ... so no worries there.
The scenario you're talking about makes sense.  Ideally, no - you wouldn't need to mass reset the MWI on a healthy Unity system other than the scheduled UTIM operation.  In your case, sounds like it is warranted as a short-term tactical solution to a problem that is identified and not yet fixed.  However, as you know the UTIM only does this once a day and I do not know of any other way to schedule or invoke the resync operation outside of the manual method you are using now.

    Read the article you linked
iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How long do I have to watch a rented movie?
You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library."

  • My iphone 5 gps is bad. It follows me about once every 20 seconds.

I have had 3gs, 4 and wife has 4s. They all followed me perfectly in the car.
The iphone 5 I have strays off the road and picks up my position about once every 20 seconds.
I have reset the phone as new phone, reset location settings, rebooted, to no avail.
Navigon 'always' wants to simulate my route.
Phone shows me about 1 block from house even outside in the open.
I held my wifes 4s AND my phone in each hand, and ran an app called 'GPS Status'.
She shows status as 'excellent fix', even in the house. Mine shows Bad Fix, and Poor fix.
I would say the gps radio in the unit is bad, or not working correctly.
I have an appt with the Genius bar near my work Tues 9/25. I hope they can exchange this for a
NEW phone (dont see how there would be any refurbs yet).
I am still within the 30 day exchange/return, as I just got it Friday 9/21.
If I have any problems with the exchange as this is hard to test inside a store, they just have
to take my word on this. I can always return it and buy it when the phone is available again
I suppose if you have to return an item you will get your UPGRADE (199$) back to purchase
another or this same phone in the future as you shouldnt have to use up your upgrade price if the item
    is returned..

fixed.  exchanged in apple store.  works perfectly on new one now.  oddly enuf old 5 had the 2 tiny torque screws missing on the bottom. Anyone else had this happen ?
