WRT54G Disconnects FTP at 10 minutes

My new WRT54G disconnects passive FTP uploads at exactly 10 minutes.
every...
single...
time...
Firmware version 8.00.5. As it stands now, this router is useless to me, except perhaps as an access point. Searching this forum, I see that this is apparently a known and long standing problem with the WRT54G.
FTP works fine with my old BEFSR41.
I must be able to upload large files via FTP. Does Linksys have a timeline for a solution for this issue? Should I just use the WRT54G as an access point through the old router until Linksys manages to fix the firmware in the WRT54G?

To dtv --- my guess is that the kids are running some high bandwidth program that makes multiple simultaneous Internet connections.  This tends to use a lot of memory in the router, causing it to crash.  Many programs can cause this, but it is common in peer to peer networking programs, such as BitTorrent.
If this is the case, limit the number of simultaneous connections that BitTorrent can make.
Please also note that Linksys recently posted a firmware upgrade that should help with BitTorrent problems.

  • WRT54G disconnect problem

I have been a loyal Linksys (CISCO) user since buying my 1st Wireless Access Point router/4-port Switch (BEFW1154 v2) in 08/2002. I upgraded to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G v8.00.2) in 11/2007. My home wireless network supports; IBM Thinkpad (Windows XP) and Lenovo Ideapad (Windows VISTA Home Premium). About a month ago I started having disconnect issues with the WRT54G. Both laptops experienced the disconnects. Initially, I unplugged the WRT54G power for about 1 minute then plugged it back in. This did not resolve the disconnect problem. I then tried to unplug the cable modem and WRT54G power. Wait about 1 minute then plug in the cable modem allowing it to reset and sync up. Then I plugged in the WRT54G. This temporarily resolved the problem for a few minutes but the disconnect problem returned eventually. I reset the WRT54G to the factory default configuration and reconfigured it for my home network. The disconnect problem was not resolved by taking this action. I contacted Cablevision who provides my broadband Internet access. They could not identify a root cause for the disconnect problem. To determine if the root cause was something other than the WRT54G, I reinstalled the BEFW1154. I have not had a disconnect problem since taking this action leading me to believe that the WRT54G is bad. I would appreciate any suggestions that might resolve the disconnect problem except for a suggestion to purchase a new router. THANKS

I too have had the disconnect problem. I am thinking now that my problem started when I moved the Router next to the printer. I think when the printer is on my router disconnects. I have the printer off this morning and have no problems. Last night the printer was on and both my wife's and my Pc's would lose connection to the router until I unplugged it and plugged it back in.
Is it possible for a printer to throw off the connection? I know my cell phone causes a lot of noise in the speakers if I have it next to the PC.

  • WRT54G Disconnects and REQUIRES a Power on Reset

My WRT54G disconnects once per day and requires a power on reset to get it back on line. It's version 6 with the most recent firmware.
After a wonderful chat session with Linksys this AM and then a subsequent email to Support, I've received NO satisfaction.
Anyone have a suggestion as to a solution???? I'm at my second warning and about to be banished!!!!
The router crashes each and every day and it seems to be DIRECTLY related to how much the kids use the wireless connection - you see they were gone for two weeks and there were NO (ZERO) crashes, they came home and started to use the wireless connectivity and BINGO, I'm pulling the plug on the WRT faster than OnnagokorO and his cohorts can edit/delte my posts.
Please, please tell me there's an answer.
(Edited a small part post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

  • TS1398 Hi. My wifi keeps disconnecting. I kkep turning the wifi on and off in settings but will disconnect again after a minute or so. I use an ipad2 and my ios is updated. How to troubleshoot? - kay peralta

Hi. My wifi keeps disconnecting. I keep turning the wifi on and off in settings but will disconnect again after a minute or so. I use an ipad2 and my ios is updated. How to troubleshoot? - kay peralta

Is this happening with one particular network or with all?  Make sure iOS is updated on the device.
    Try this:
Reboot ipad by pressing and holding both the home and sleep/wake buttons at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go. Then try to connect to network.
Go to settings, Toggle airplane mode on/off. Make sure bluetooth is off. Turn on wif (airplane mode off). Try to connect.
    Reset Network Settings
Go to settings/general/reset/reset network settings. Then try to connect to network.
If its your home router, then reboot router by unplugging for 5-10min. (do this while you're resetting network settings).
If problem persists, then check for firmware updates on your router.(you check router manufacturer support website for downloads and instructions).

  • WRT54G disconnects every 15 sec

My WRT54G disconnects me from the network every 15-16 seconds or so. It lasts maybe a a second or so, but it's enough of a lag to put an end to any downloads or some streaming media.
I am connected to the router wirelessly
The router is connected to my cable modem.
I think the problem is with the automatic DHCP setting which refreshes the IP address again and again.
    Any ideas?

Hi, This will not be a DHCP issue since the DHCP refreshes the IP once every 24 hours.
What you need to do here is tweak the wireless settings a bit to get better connectivity.
access the router using http://192.168.1.1 "admin" is the password.
Go to the wireless section and change the SSID to any name you prefer, select channel 11 and save settings.Once back, click on "advanced wireless settings".Change the beacon interval to 50 and reduce the RTS and fragmentation threshold by 40 each.save settings and restart the wireless PC.
NOTE :- the above changes should be made using the wired PC.

  • WRT54G disconnects everytime

    hello,
I've got a WRT54G router in my home. I've got two wired pc's and my wireless laptop. From certain times,  the router disconnects me and all other pc's constantly from the network. new connection would last 2 minutes and then is gone again.
THis is also with the wired ones. Same times the wireless goes down, the others go down to. what's the problem?

Yup, i though so, but not...
I was uploading photos and video to my friend, by ICQ. Router QOS disabled, the upload speed was >20 KB/s .. crashed like every 10 minutes. With QOS on, the upload speed was 3 KB/s. When i tried manually adjusting upload speed in the QOS settings nothing changed, untill i put there really high numbers, like 1600 kbps.. then the speed was good again.. but router crashed every 10 minutes.
Yesterday i was uploading the remaining files by FTP to my webspace. With QOS speed was 12 KB/s, without it, it was 21 KB/s .. and it crashed only 5 times, well, a lot better compared to the ICQ method, but still "somewhat" irritating, isn't it?

  • WRT54G Disconnects when another computer connects

    Hello,
I have a WRT54G v5 Wireless-G Broadband Router. My 100MB fiber optic line is connected directly to the router and the router connects to my internet account with no problem. The main computer that I use is directly connected to the router via LAN cable to one of the 4 ports. At this point I never have any issues at all and no disconnections. Then when my laptop connects wirelessly to the router for internet access the router disconnects and reconnects immediately. Then I can resume work as normal until the next time the laptop connects to the router again. In the router settings the wireless area is set to "B-Only" on Channel 11 2.462GHz.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this issue so that the laptop can connect without causing the router to disconnect and reconnect each time?
    Thank you!!
    Ed

So you had this same problem? And setting the router to use either B or G solved it? That seems strange. I have 4 computers. 2 are wired to 2 of the 4 ports. Other 2 are wireless using G-capable adapters. So I configured my router to do G only. I figured why not--it is one more step in security since B clients won't even be able to connect. I'm also sure I read something in the Linksys docs that implied it was better to lock the router to one or the other if you know that's all you need to support.
Anyway, I'm going to try this like you suggest. I don't have the exact same problem. My problem is that I just lose connection between computers and the router "randomly" for 10 seconds to 2 minutes then mysteriously the wireless network will be found again. The signal is either non-existent or excellent. The router is about 10 feet from the computers and without any walls between. My router is a v1--old, but I have latest firmware available as of last week.

  • Disconnect/Reconnect every few minutes

I just had Fios installed 4 days ago.  I've got a M1424WR wireless router.  Firmware up-to-date, 2 computers one wired one wireless. and every few minutes I'm disconnected from the system and reconnected.  Almost every web site has to be reloaded 2-3 times until there is a response.  The Verizon Tech phone support didn't see anything wrong with the service or router.  As a matter of fact, 6 lights are lit on the router and when this happens they generally don't go yellow or go out.  It just looks like the connection to the router is fine.  I've rebooted the router, even rebooted the back up power.  I have a feeling that there is just a setting somewhere that needs to be changed.... anyone have any ideas?  For reference, it's a lenovo laptop, IBM build.  I'm desperate to get this resolved as it's impacting my work.

Well, you have two computers. one wired and one wireless.
Do both of them drop connections or just one of them? If both, do they drop at the same time?
If it is just one of them, then I'd look at the connection itself or the computer. If it is both, then I'd look at the router or verizon network.
Assuming it is both. You've already rebooted the router, did you try resetting the router also? Also try reseating the wan cable to the router as well. If your still having an issue at this point. I would call tech support back and ask them if they can pull up the history log on the ONT. This will hopefully tell them if the drops are happening on the inside or outside of the house.
Do you have any other fios services? Telephone or TV? Do they have any issues?

  • WRT54GS disconnects and re-connects constantly

For the last week or so, I've been having problems with my laptop staying connected to any network. It will connect to my home network for a while then inexplicably disconnect and re-connect to one of the other networks belonging to another house in the neighborhood. I stay connected to that for a while, then it will disconnect but stay disconnected until I re-connect to my home network.
I thought it might have been a router problem since my router was about 5 years old, so I went out and bought a new Linksys WRT54GS. I'm still having the same problems, though. I have downloaded the newest drivers for my wireless card and the newest firmware for the router. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

It sounds like you and your neighbors are still all using "linksys" as your SSID.   Your computer is simply connecting to whichever signal is stronger.
Set your SSID to a unique name.

  • WRT54GS v6 - Connection dies within minutes.

I installed a new WRT54GS model- v6. After setting it up with a static IP as I have done many Linksys models before, it works for anywhere from as soon as you can type in something to maybe 5 mins. The WLAN shows activity on startup even, interesting considering there are no wireless computers connected to it yet.
Basically, it runs for about 1 to 5 mins. and then you have to unplug the power and reboot it. You can't get into the internal setup either. The page just lags. All the activity LEDs go solid instead of any flashing. (all the ones that were active)
I've bought probably 50 to 60 WRT54GS v.3 and v.4 routers, been a while since I needed more- I got this one and it's a big dud. vxWorks have anything to do with this?
What makes this a hassle is this one came from amazon.com - and the rebate has already been sent in. I just want one that works.

I have the EXACT same problem for the last 3-4 days. Initially I thought it was my ISP blocking my ports or something similar. But then I realized that I cant even access the administration page, without rebooting the router. And after doing this, the internet will stop after 5 minutes.
I have the latest firmware installed, actually I upgraded after I got the issue. I have tried resetting it once by pressing the reset for 10 seconds or whatever that means.
I already had a bad time calling my ISP 4 times, and those guys sincerely answered all my questions, and finally I know the problem lies with my router.
Right now I am not using router and everything seems to work great.
    My operating system, windowXP sp2.
    Router version 6.0
    Firmware: 27/11/1006 (whichever is latest)
(Some interesting fact: My bittorrent traffic on wired computer works fine when the internet is blocked on all other pc's including the wired one)Perhaps due to I forward its port?....

  • Connection woes - disconnects every 1-2 minutes

Hello folks, I'm having some frustrating issues and am hoping someone may be able to help. I'll try explain it in some kind of logical order. Problem: Everyone in the house is effectively losing connection on average every one or two minutes for around 15-25 seconds each time. This is wreaking havoc with anyone trying to use VOIP, do any gaming, stream videos etc. Setup: BT Infinity running through an Openreach modem and a Home Hub 3, with ethernet to the five bedrooms in the house via an 8-port switch. Observations: I'm using a wired connection and can see that my ethernet card isn't showing any issues when the disconnects occur. The connection / duration time in the ethernet's device settings does not indicate any disconnects. Neither does the Home Hub's. The Home Hub's lights are all blue when the disconnects occur and I've been in the room to check it (not near my computer). The IP leases don't appear to be getting renewed over-frequently (which I thought could be an issue). The connection's normal (50-70Mbps down / 5-10Mbps up) in between these problems. Disconnects are frequent but don't follow a regular pattern. Attempted solutions: Running my computer in safe mode with networking. Connecting the ethernet switch to a different port on the Home Hub (although it affects wireless devices too). Power-cycling the modem and hub. Coarse language. Meditation. So... the problem appears to be something from the hub onwards towards BT's end. I still don't know if these are actual disconnects or the connection effectively dropping to near-zero bandwidth. I have Mumble (VOIP) running and it makes it pretty clear when these disconnects occur as it tells me when it's lost connection and reconnected, as does not being able to browse the internet. Thanks for reading. Any suggestions or solutions will be gladly received!

Ouch, the forums ate my formatting for that first post!
Thanks for the reply Ray. I should mention that this is a shared house, not a family home, so I cannot always access the devices. I'm the one on the ethernet connection and I've gone into my ethernet adaptor's settings to change my IP address to a static number just below that of the DHCP range whilst leaving DHCP enabled for everyone else. After restarting my computer the connection's still dropping.
Haven't had a chance to reset the hub yet, if that's necessary, as other people are using the connection at the moment.
I do have the admin password for the hub but I'm under the impression a static IP address would have to be set from the devices themselves which I can't access - or can I use Home Network > Devices, check "Always use this IP address" then disable DHCP?

  • URGENT: WLAN disconnecting every 10-15 minutes on windows 7 laptop

    hi there
i have 2 laptops, one runs xp home and other one runs win 7 ultimate, both machines have pretty much the same stuff on.
the difference is that with the XP one wireless works great with the web authentication and never disconnects, with the win 7 machine instead, it disconnects me every 10-20 minutes or so, i came up with a trick that is to keep a streaming radio on the background, that way sometimes im connected also for 2-3-4 hours but looks like it times out again after an XX amount of time.
so should i change the MTU value on the win 7 machine? that seems to be the workaround it by reading here and there....happens the very same with either firefox 3.6 and internet explorer 8.
on the win 7 machine i installed TCP-Z driver...... > TCP-Z, Best TCP/IP Patch from http://deepxw.blogspot.com/ i tried to disable it and run some tests, but nothing changes.
help much apperciated, please answer here or to my mail gabrio81ATgmail.com
