WRT54G dropping network

Hi
After the post on http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&thread.id=54303 I started up my software router and disable the DHCP on the Linksys router. Basically trying to operate it like a normal WAP54G.
The problem now is that 1-2 times a week the WIFI network goes dead and I must physically switch the power of the WRT54G V6 off and on to restore the connection. I am starting to wonder if CISCO is really that good as Linksys's name is linked to CISCO. Apart from the fact that I work for a company that are dealing solely in CISCO products.
The problems I have been experiencing with the WRT54G router seriously are undermining my trust in Linksys and Cisco routing capabilities. Especially since I am hearing people that are using the WRT54G with 3rd party firmware resolving most if not all of their issues. Is Linksys with the backing of CISCO not able to program their own products correctly that 3rd party firmware have to solve their problems? Unfortunately I apparently have the only version of the WRT54G that can not take 3rd party firmware, namely version 6. How can I suggest a Liksys router to my home network customers when I have so much problems with it myself.
True that the WAP54G has been working for me without a problem. But then again the WAP54G V3 is not a router. Just an simple access point. This let me think the LinkSYS lack the complete knowledge of how to make a router.
Ok... Done ranting... But still have to solve this problem. Payed money for a product that's been no joy since I bought it.

You can try to change the channel of the router:
http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=4009
1,6,9,11 are good channels.
if you have tried that and it didn't work, you can try to upgrade the firmware of the router instead: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=4030

  • Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

    Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
    100% repeatable scenarios:
    ## Scenario 1 ##
    1) Log in
    2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
    3) Check that it has connected
    4) Lock screen (Win+L)
    5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
    6) Unlock screen (using password)
    7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
    ## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
    1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
    2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
    3) Start copying files from computer to server
    4) Lock the screen on computer
    5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
    6) Unlock screen on the computer
    7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
    timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

    Best regards,
    Sergiusz

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
    Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

Mac OS X 10.7 drops network connection to Officejet J6480.  I can re-establish by power cycling the printer.
Other computers cannot connect to the printer even though they are on the same network.

What router are you using?  Are other computers Macs as well?  What operating system are they using?
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Time Capsule keeps dropping network connection

I recently got a Time Capsule to replace a dead external drive and my AirPort Express. I was able to set up the Time Capsule as a router with little trouble but using it as a Time Machine backup drive is driving me crazy. Each time I start a backup the Time Capsule eventually drops my network connection before it can finish. I have about 200GB on my internal drive. Could this be too much to transfer over Wi-Fi?
I never experienced a dropped network connection when I was using the AirPort Express and my second Mac (a G4 iMac) never looses the connection. Any ideas what could be going on here?

Very interesting. Been working this problem from every angle. Noticed two kickers.
    1) Transmission would refresh to fast when opening and closing menu bar airport icon.
    2) Transmission never fades when running iStumbler which is continuously interrogating Time Capsule.
MacPro software seems to be forgetting that it is hooked up and drops out. It is a software thing.
I am starting iStumbler for each session automatically now and am having no drop outs. It is keeping Time Capsules attention. It is not required for all computers in the house but certainly is for the MacPro from which I control everything.
Amazing. Can one of the FanBoys bring this to the attention of the right person at Apple? Also, I need work and have many stories of trouble shooting successes. Tell them to hire me. It would save you guys a lot of time.

  • Drops network

our iPad 2 drops network from home.  We have to reset network and password whenever we turn on. Our IPad 1 works fine-No drops

    FYI. Here is my setup:
    Dual 2.5 G5 (10.4.5)
    12" 1.5 Powerbook (10.4.5) via airport
    Dell 3.0 P4
Running into a Belkin router and then into my Cablevision modem.
The modem is connected and online, and the Dell makes a connection (hate to say the PC works better
But both macs drop network connections. They are all connected to the router, and in-turn the router is making an IP connection via DHCP. Cablevision was able to ping the router from their end, and even see the three machines connected to it. But macs time out all network connections.
Hard-wiring the macs to the modem produces a unique IP number via DHCP. The modem continues to say everything is OK, but the macs fail to connect. Rebooting produces a new IP address, but still does nothing, whereas PC continues to connect fine every time.
ALL of this occurred after upgrading on Monday night to 10.4.5, so I have to agree that this version is doing something buggy to the network connection.
I'd hate to have to switch to the PC for work until 10.4.6, but if Apple doesn't get this issue sorted ASAP, then that is my only recourse for work.
    Any suggestions?

  • WMP54GS and WRT54GS = dropped connections

I have had the WMP54GS and WRT54GS setup for around 2 years now. I have version 2 of the router, and everything has been fine up until a couple weeks ago. Lately I have been getting randomly dropped from the router. I already have the latest firmware for the router, and have tried changing the channel, and the operating mode to G only, but nothing helps. Sometimes drops occur ever few minutes, sometimes they are so constant that I cant even connect at all. I will refresh my network list and the network will not show up for a few seconds, and then it will, so I will try and connect and it will say Unable to connect.
Sometimes when I refresh the network list and it will show my network like 4 times... like this
    SSID
    SSID 1
    SSID 2
    SSID 3
I have SSID broadcast off if that makes any difference...
I have no idea what is going on, is this a problem with the router or the network card? What should I do? thanksMessage Edited by jls1986 on 05-03-200709:38 AM

First of all, give your network a new unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router.  Also, do not use your old SSID.   Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
After you have completed the above stuff, then go into your computer, to your "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ) and delete all networks named "linksys", also delete all entries with your old SSID.  While you are there, delete any network that you don't recognize, or that you no longer use.  Add your new network with your new SSID, encryption method (if any), and key (if any).  Reboot your modem, router, and computer.  Then try to connect to your new network.  Once you have connected, return to "Preferred networks" and set your computer to connect to your new SSID automatically.  If you have an option that says, "Connect to any available network", turn it off.
If you are running any peer-to-peer (P2P) software (BitTorrent, Ares, etc.), this is known to cause disconnection problems.  Go into the P2P software and reduce the number of connections that the software can make.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, Bluetooth (including Bluetooth game controllers), microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, and your neighbor's wireless network. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
    Hope this helps.

  • Wrt54gs drops connection

Forgive me if this has been addressed somewhere on here - i looked for a similar situation and couldnt find one--this is wordy, but hopefully it is useful info to solve the issue.
My future father-in-law runs a Sony Vaio with Windows XP with SP2, on Charter hi-speed internet through a Motorola cable modem.  virus and firewall are from Trend Micro.  Comp and modem are approx 5 years old. They just got a WRT54GS (v. 7 i believe) and had no problems setting it up right out of the gate - he used the LELA interface and was up and running in no time.  all night it was fine.  The problems started the next day, when they tried to get on the internet.  Their homepage is MSN, and it wouldnt load up.  they also tried to go to several of thier regularly visited websites, nothing worked.  Eventually they gave up and disconnected the router, going directly through the old modem.  that let them back online for about an hour, then it dropped the connection and they couldnt get it back. finally, they un-installed the LELA software and everything was back to normal.
My future F-I-L wanted to be able to work from home with his laptop, which was the whole reasone for the router, so this weekend i went over to set everything back up.  We got the router re-installed, everything was communciating properly, and they were back in business.  His laptop was at work, so i planned to go over today to get that connected.  when i got there, they informed me that they couldnt get on the internet anymore.  yesterday was fine, nobody tried to get on during the day, and this evening the problem started.
I checked connections (all good), un-hooked the router, and had the same non access problems, so i dumped the software as well.  read a bit online and then re-installed everything, it wouldnt let me onto the internet, so i went into the router and changed the IP to 192.168.2.1.  released the DHCP and renewed it, and everything was great.
Then tried to connect the laptop (ibm thinkpad, win XP SP2) had some troubles, mis-entered the WAP key, fixed that, and got on the internet with the laptop.  Everything seemed good, but when he tried to access his work server (via LotusNotes) it wouldnt allow him in.  something about the tcp/ip being denied.
The laptop is running PcAnywhere, which i have read may have issues.  One thing i noticed is that LELA recognized the laptop twice.  once as an actual computer with the right name, and once as an unknown device.  unless i disable pcAnywhere and the  IBM access connections software, the recognized laptop doesnt access the network, only the unknown device does.
1.) Is the re-assigned IP solution the best way to handle the dropped connection?  did it even really solve the problem?
    and
2.) is the laptop connection issue something with the router, or something with the different programs on the computer itself?

  • WRT54G dropping DHCP

Okay can some please give me some help, I have been running a WRT54G ver: 7.0 for abuot six weeks, so far the wireless network drops in and out when if feels like it. Now the DHCP side of things locks up after my wifes Vista laptop turns on and logs in. Also when scanning the wireless network the channel the router is broadcasting on which has been set to channel 6 goes from 1 to 11 at random...
Can anyone tell me if there is a firmware upgrade for my version 7, the site skips this version in the drop down box, or can offer some help please, failing that I am going to take a hammer to it!!
    Many thaks Rob
UPDATE:  Okay I have found the lastest firmware, which I have installed, I still have the problem of my DHCP not allocating IP's to hosts logging on!  I have to power down the router and start again...
    Any help out there?

You must reset and re-configure the router after any firmware upgrade...If you have not resetted the router after the last firmware upgrade you must do it it now...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...See if it resolves your concern...

  • WRT54GS drops connection with Windows Vista

    Hello,
Wireless connection drops constantly between Linksys WRT54GS and Windows Vista laptop. It actually connects, but then drops within a minute. Laptop with Windows XP works fine with the same router.
I've changed the channels, advanced settings, updated firmware, changed the router itself. Nothing helped.
    Can you advise anything?
    Thank you.

I already checked everything in Vista, addition to that i took laptop to a different linksys network and connection is stable.  I have a lot of reports from another people i fix computers for and they have same problem with  54GS router. After i replaced linlsys with netgear, problem was resolved. It has to be something with the router.

  • Computer drops network and subsequently can't be seen in itunes network

    I have a iMac G5 running on 10.5.8
When I first boot up my computer I can "see" my desktop's itunes library in other computer itunes (and on my iPhone and appleTV) [sharing the same wifi of course] and I can network between the computers.
However, after my wifi momentarily drops my signal I can no longer network unless I
    1) turn off and on my network in "System Preferences" and
    2) Turn off and on "Home Sharing"
I can still see my iMac G5 in "Screen Sharing" which seems ironic
Also my desktop iMac G5 is not Wifi.
It is super frustrating and I am hoping someone has a solution OR can help me write a script so when if happens I can remotely run a script to turn on and off my network and Home sharing to re"see" the system (does that make sense?)
    Thanks in advance,
    T

I had a similar problem not too long ago. My iPod would only work properly on one of my windows login-profiles. Weird problem, but after a while I followed the instructions in this guide: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Check out the "Reinstall the COM interface for the iPod Service" section, and see if that helps.
At least it's worth a shot

  • MacBook Pro with Belkins Thunderbolt Express sometimes drops network

    Hi,
I have encoutered a problem with my MacBook Pro Retina and Belkins Thunderbolt express where the network sometimes just drops. The network does still have "link" but no network. Removing and adding network ssettings does not help. Removing and adding kext module helps. This problem seems to have started when I installed Mavericks.
Script to remove and add kext:
    #!/bin/sh
    KEXT=/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleBC M5701Ethernet.kext
    sudo /sbin/kextunload $KEXT
    sudo /sbin/kextload $KEXT
It also works to unplug and plug the Belkins Thunderbolt express device... but I have my external display attached to the device and I have to restart a bounch of applications to get back to a sane state :-/
    Emil

Well, you cannot use the 3G USB modem plugged directly into the Express. However, you can configure your MacBook Pro to do 'Internet sharing' (SysPrefs>Sharing) over the Ethernet port, and then connect your Express into the Ethernet port. Alternatively, you could always get your MacBook to 'create a wireless network'.
new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
You could always look for open WiFi networks to *cough*borrow*cough* .

  • E6 Belle dropping network connection

HI, I got my E6 just before Belle came out and upgraded after waiting a month or so for any issues to become apparent.
Every now and then the network connection lines become broken and I am no longer able to access the internet.  I spent an hour on the phone with network provider (T-mobile in UK), switched the sim into my old phone and it worked fine.  Restarted the phone a few times.  I played with the network settings and changing it from 'dual mode' to 3g or to GSM got it back up and running.  The problem happened again several times and I left it on GSM and didn't have any problems for a while, but now it's happening again and more often.
It happens regardless of location and at no apparent specific intervals.  Assistance would be great, I've been loving the phone and planning to have it for a long time, but I use it for work and need to get email!

VZ can only  "look" as far as their own equipment, meaning they can see whether you are correctly provisioned, supplied, drawing bandwidth, etc.  They cannot see your end of the equipment assembly, of course.
What it sounds like is that one or more  pieces of gear and equipment are not functioning correctly all of the time.  This is often due to poor or faulty connections in the cables, intermittent faults and gaps, etc.   Therefore the first course of action is to check and reset all cables (yes, it's likely that you've already done this, but just for drill, do it once again!).
Having done that, you should devise a test that allows you to insert one piece of gear into the network at a time.  Start with the router and only a single computer, for example.  Wired is probably best at first to see what happens (yes, these tests take time, but there's no way around it).  If that assembly works consistently, try a wireless connection next.  Record the results.
Next I would add back a single STB (of any type) and see if the TV system is OK.  Finally I would add back the remaining devices one at a time and observe the results.  Somewhere along the way you will encounter the offender, but if you do not and if the gear now functions per specification, your time won't have been wasted.  Good luck.

  • WRT54G drops connection

    Hi everybody.
I just got a WRT54G router and installed it right away. I use an iMac (wired) and an iBook G4 (wireless). At the beginning it was working well, but after about an hour using it the connection dropped.
I restarted the router, after this it worked again, but after a few minutes the connection dropped again.
This happens regullary and , when it does, all connections drop. As the wireless and wired connections.
It'll be great if someone could help me..
    Kind Regards
    Daniel D.

My question is does anyone know if Linksys are going to fix this?  I am not inclined to do a fix that might be undone by Linksys in the near future.  I agree that if it works and Linksys doesn't fix this I will have no choice.
Anyone heard a response from the company?  Seems to have occurred right as they released the latest version 8 of this router I noticed.

Lack of running for an interface normally means network connectivity issue.
Check the network cable is plugged in securely.
Check for light on ethernet card and switch connectivity light.
Try a different switch port or switch and a different ethernet cable.

  • Blackberry Curve Drop Network After Turning It On

I have a blackberry curve with AT&T, recently it has started turning off the mobile network by itself. I use the on/Off function to turn it off, have not changed any of the settings that I know of, yet the following happens. I turn it on the for first time in the day, it gathers itself, collects emails, VM, etc., then it shows OFF in the mobile network. I go to network connections and sure enough, the mobile network is off. I turn it back on, and Ta-Da, it's back, and stays that way until I turn it Off/On again. It only seems to happen during the first "start-up" of the day. I do not use stand-by, or auto on-off, just the red "end call - On/Off Key" Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Convenience Keys are set to the defaults, Camera and Push to talk. It seems to happen right after I initially turn it on for the day, it gets my emails, shows voice mails, etc. Then it shuts off the mobile network. I go to make a call, and it prompts to restore connections. I either follow that prompt or have to go to the network page and turn on the mobile network from there. Sometimes it drops the network after a phone call as well. Finish a call, go to make another one and Bamm! the network is off again. Not sure what is causing this, and is fairly annoying, curve is only a few months old, and was new, not reconditioned at the time of purchase. Thanks.
