WRT54G-|EE NZ Telecom needs PPPoE

My WRT54G was bought as I was leaving the uk for perminent residence in New Zealand. It has never been setup until today when I finally got round to try and get it running.
The idea is to replace my existing DLINK (DSL-G604T) currently working fine (ish?) with my ADSL2+ service with NZ Telecom.
The supplied setup programme runs ok until we reach the point where the WRT54G needs to connect to the ADSL line. It fails the auto setup and I am left with a screen asking for the connection type. All this is as I expected - but NZ Telecom wants PPPoA and the option with my Lynksys only provide for PPPoE.
Is there anyway round this? A different setup disk? A download? Firmware upgrade? My WRT is version 1 by the way.
I sort of expected this (or something like it) to happen - and the DLINK is working. But it would be nice to get the WRT  running so I can start on the serious business of setting up my wireless music streaming to work 100%.
Any comments gratefully received.

Never use the setup CD as they don't work that well.  Connect via wired computer to 192.168.1.1 username blank, password 'admin'.  Now configure the router manually like everyone.

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Constant Need To Reset!

I purchased a WRT54G Ver 6.0 Router in April to bring to Iraq with me.  I have it connected to my iDirect 3000 Satellite Modem, with the static IP config input into the WRT54G.
I have two computers on my desk, my personnal XPS 1710 with Vista and my Work D600 Latitude with XP.  Both computers exhibit the same problems at the same time.  I have even had other computers connected and have had the same problem.
My problem seems to be a constant need to reset the WRT54G Router.  I was connecting wirelessly.  The system seemed to operate fine for a day or two.  I started to have problems with the connection to the internet dropping.  When it did this, I could not connect to the WRT54G setup page either.  I figured something locally here at the Camp in Iraq might have been interfering with the wireless, so I ditched the wireless and have been using wired connections.  The problems have not stopped.  I am constantly having to unplug and reset the router to reconnect.  When it hangs up, I cannot even connect to the setup page.  Occasionally, it will find itself without reseting the router, but most times, I have to reset.
I have tried factory default reseting and manually reentering my settings.  I have just updated the firmware, but it didn't seem to solve anything.  In the past few minutes while trying to search for this problem here on this forum, the router dropped the connection twice.  The networking icon on the computer still indicates a connection, on the Vista is shows that a local connection is available only (during the problem).
I have read a little online and this seems to be a common problem for Linksys.  I have 2 more of these routers, one at home and one at my office in the States.  Both have had the problems, just not as severe.  This router requires reseting at least 15 times a day during my 12 hour shift.
I bought the Linksys Routers because they did have a reputation for reliability and quality.  Boy, I guess I should have researched this one a bit more.
I have 5 IP addresses from my Satellite ISP, so I am considering configuring the Router as a Switch or HUB, but I am unsure on how to do this, or of it will even solve my problems.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Vincent

I am having the almost exactly the same problem. It started about a week ago, (just like alot of others I have read on here recently) and I too will have no access to the set up page once it drops the net. I can still acess other computers on the router, but no net and no router set-up page until I reset it. I'm running the same router, without the firmware update. I have 4 desktops directly into the router..and one laptop wireless. Most of the time, the net will stay on for all the computers for surfing and email. Maybe once or twice a day it will drop access to the internet. a simple unplugging of the power cord resets it and everything is peachy. BUT....try to start a download.(usind DAP *download accelerator plus* or a bit torrent)...WHOA! it's anywhere from an instant drop to maybe ten minutes then drop. Most assuredly it will drop. we have had this router since January, and until a week ago, it worked just fine. no problems. Last week, our ISP upgraded their equipment and increased the bandwidth. (we have to use a cellular connection with a static IP being out in the boonies far enough that cable and DSL are still not available) The problems started at the same time and I thought it might be a problem with them. After testing one of the computers with a direct connection to the internet modem, everything, including a major download, worked just fine. It is definately a router problem. I spent quite a lengthy time on the phone with Linksys tech support, and the nice lady had me change the MTU rate from 1500 to 1300. It seemed to work, but about an hour after being done with the support call, things started to go wonky again. I am just about at my wits end!! Nothing has been changed on the router settings except that one thing that tech support instructed me to do. I am kinda leary about upgrading the firmware because I have been seeing a ton of *my router wont work with firmware update* or *now my router is frozen* posts. I have to type in a ton of settings because I am using a static IP and I really don't want to do all that again!! lol PLEASE, somone have a solution to this problem! It is driving me mad!! I would really hate to have to buy a new router, but my roomate is about to that point if this doesn't get fixed soon.

What is the model number plus version of your router?
In your heading you say you have GS ...in your message you say you have a
G router You also say in your message you are upgrading from G V3 to GS
    v6
If you have a G router you have to update to the latest G firmware not GS and vis versa

  • I have a wrt54g wireless router - and need to secure it

I have an older router that has never been secured and need instructions on how to secure it.  I printed the pgs off the linksys website but it seems that the link has been broken because I can only get part of it to even show up on line, much less print it.  Any ideas? Thanks!

First upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your Linksys router and then try to secure the network.
To upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your Linksys router follow these steps
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in search tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
    Firmware Upgrade/Reflash
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed

  • WRT54GS cannot be configured, need help!!!!

Ok.. I am getting so lost.  I will try to explain the best I can what is going on.  I just bought the Wireless G router with speedbooster and put the CD in to set it up, did everything it told me to do on the screen as far as pluggin cables in yada yada. When it came to step 4 of 4 it said "Waiting for Router". Then after about 2-3 minutes it comes back saying the following:
YOUR ROUTER DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONNECTED PROPERLY
Error 322: New router or Gateway not detected
    Follow these steps:
    1) Make sure you are connecting your new router and not your old router
    2) Make sure the ethernet cable from your computer is securely connected to a LAN port on the back of your new router
    3) Click retry to try installing your router again
Also, when I try to retry the setup without unplugging anything it says this:
Linksys EasyLink Advisor Setup Wizard has discovered that you are already connected to a router. Many people choose to replace an existing router with their new Linksys Router.
I can connect to the internet without configuring the router!!! It isn't secure though!  I want to configure my router so that it is secure and I don't know what to do to fix this.
I am using a Comcast provided modem, RCA model # DCM425
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Remember I am a noob so please don't confuse me more with words I don't understand.. Thanks
One more thing.  When it is "Waiting for router" the 2 computer icon comes up at bottom of screen saying acquiring IP address so I double clicked on it and it would be connected with the IP address 192.168.1.1 and then all of a sudden it would say Invalid IP address not connected.  I really need help here!!!

Ok, I'm not 100% sure I can help you, but I will try.
First thing, find the setup disk that came with the router and use it as a coaster or a frisbee or something because it is almost completely worthless.
Until you have completed the setup of the router, I would suggest using a computer that is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable. The reason being, if you change any settings wirelessly, such as security features, you will be disconnected and unable to access it again. So use a computer that is directly connected for setup.
The IP address you saw in you system tray is the IP address of the router itself. You actually need this for your router setup. Open whichever web browser you use and type in that IP address, nothing else. 192.168.1.1 A login screen should appear for you to enter your user name and password. Leave the user name blank and for the password enter "admin" without the quotes. This should bring you to your basic settings screen for the router.
From this point, I'm sure exactly how you want to set everything up. If you're not very familiar with networking or routers I would suggest you change very little. If you desire security for your network (which I suggest) click on the "Wireless" tab at the top of the screen. This should bring you to basic wireless settings. From here, you can change the name of your wireless network, change the broadcast frequency and enable/disable wireless broadcast. You can change these if you like or leave them alone whichever you prefer. I do suggest changing the name of you network (SSID) so you can tell which one is yours when you try to connect. It gets confusing when everyone in your neighborhood has a Linksys and all of the names look similar.
Once you're done here, next click on the "Wireless Security" tab within the "Wireless" tap. Make sure you are click "Wireless Security" and not just "Security." From here, you can select the kind of wireless security you want to use. I'm not highly informed on which of these is the best, but WEP is probably the strongest security you're going to need anyway, so I would go with that. After you select WEP you get a few more options. For "default transmit key" just select one. Then in the "WEP Encryption" drop down, select "128 bits 26 hex digits." 64 would most likely be ok, but 128 bit encryption is definitely better.
In the next box "Passphase" enter a word or short phrase that is only known to you an click generate. The four boxes below will now have you WEP keys. I delete all but the first key to keep things simple, but whatever you want to do is up to you. After you delete the other three lines, select the key in your first line and select/copy it so that you can just paste it into the box in network options when you're connecting to the network. Regardless, I would also write this key down somewhere. If you have multiple computers in the house you have to enter it on each and every one and it's a pain to go back and forth. Click save settings. You're pretty much done. There are other things you can do to beef up security, but this is the most basic and it's still quite strong.
If you are looking at playing games frequently or anything like that I would go to PortForward.com
Any other questions you have, you should be able to google I think. I hope I can help. Good Luck.

  • WRT54GS v1.0 Firmware needed, Blinking Power Light

No download available and none available via Linksys Live Chat or FTP and having spent the best part of the week trying to find relevant firmware on other forums I decided to come here to get answers to the following questions, hopefully from version 1.0 experienced owners or not.
#1. Can the firmware of version 2.0 and 3.0 be reduced to flash version 1.0?
#2. When diagnosing the blinking power light issue by connecting directly to the router and the network card using "ping -t 192.168.1.xxx" which network address do I use, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 to 2xx?
I get a reply using 192.168.1.1 but I'm not sure that helps when using the TFTP Utility if it's the wrong address on my Laptop to ping?
Anyway I'm stuffed without the right firmware anyway so I need your help with that first please, anyone with UNBRICKING knowledge.
    All Help Much Appreciated

Thanks Stephanie67, below is what I found. It appears to be the correct firmware by the description anyway. Do you know if this firmware is loaded the same way via the web interface like the firmware provided by Linksys?

  • WRVS4400Nv2 problem connect PPPoE

    Hi,
I have buy an new wireless router WRVS4400Nv2 and upgrade the firmware to version 2.0.0.8.
I have the problem that this router not connect to my ADSL modem with PPPoE settings.
I borrow another three router from my friend one Netgear WGR614 and one Linksys WRT54G and one Allied Telesyn AT-AR220E all three work fine with the same setting for PPPoE, but the WRVS4400Nv2 not work.
I try to set it to Automatic Configuration - DHCP and they found the modem with this set:
    Automatic Configuration - DHCP
    LAN IP: 192.168.1.1
    WAN IP: 192.168.2.10
    DNS 1: 192.168.2.1
But they not connect to internet in any way.
How can I set this router that work with PPPoE settings?
My internet provider in Slovenia is SiOL www.siol.net and need PPPoE settings for internet connection.
    Internet connection ADSL 10MBps/768kBps.

  • Slow wireless speed with PPPoE

I'm using a WRT54G wireless router configured with PPPoE connected to a DSL router which is acting as the DHCP server. The DSL connection is 10 Mbps. I have two roommates wired to the router and me and another roommate wirelessly. The two computers that are wired directly are getting speeds around 8.5-9.5 Mbps, but I'm getting 3 tops. And lately its diminishing to a few hundred Kbps. while the others are still up at full speed. Is there some setting on the router that is throttling down the wireless speed when using PPPoE? Thanks

Wireless connections are always slower than wired connections, but in most cases, you should be able to achieve at least 50% or more of the wired speed (unless you are so far away from the router that your signal is poor just from distance).
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If your troubles persist, note that with newer routers, some users have found that WPA or WPA2 encryption works better than WEP.
If you still have trouble, for wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
Another option is to try to adjust the QOS (Quality of Service) options on your router.  You might be able to give yourself a higher priority, and the wired connections a lower priority.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need more Ports!

I have a wireless WRT54GS Router but I need more ports in back to connect other rooms(wired). What is the device that I need?

Go out and buy a 4, 8 or 16 port switch.  Plug it in and you have your extra ports.

  • How to set WRT54G v7 router so signal is forwardet- using bridge or repeater mode?

What i need to set in WRT54G so its signal is beeing repeated?
I want to use WRT54G v7 as to who internet comes in and it works like that right now and it has passw admin changed and WPA2 personal set up
I have another router tenda w311r+ and there i have options in WDS- Lazy, Bridge and Repeater modes..
Lazy mode is without asking BSID but others ask so i asume Lazy repeats every routers around signals..
But what then is difference in Bridge and Repeater mode?
I wasnt able to set all up corectly..
Read tutorials about w311r+ and doing similar couldnt get it work..

    1
    In tenda i have
    Wifi settings
BSSID NameTenda123 Passw123 <---- This is not same as WRT54G settings, do i need to make it like that also? Even channel the same?
    WDS settings
Repeater ESSID Mac of WRT54G and WifipasswofWRT54G <--- this is the same as set inWRT54G
    2
And do i connect from computer to NameTenda123 to get repeated signal from WRT54G ?
Or the same name as reapted signal router i need to connect? BSSID of WRT54G? And do i need to set in tenda wifi settings witch now are different then WRT54G wifi settings but in Tenda WDS repeater settings are set..
Maybe i need to set Tenda wifi off and only set WDS to be on?
    3
Also to WRT54G i log in to 192.168.0.1 and maybe i need to set Tenda to 192.168.0.2 ? and something else?

  • Connecting two WRT54G wireless routers - how to configure

    Hi All,
I have two WRT54G wireless routers. One is currently providing wireless access for several users at a local law firm. I need to connect a second wireless router for a user who works for another company in the same office. The second wireless router is basically going to be used for Internet access. The Office Manager at the law office does not want the user from the other company using their wireless router directly, BUT they will allow me to hook up the second wireless router for Internet access. I realize this doesn't really make sense in terms of security, but this is the scenario I must abide to. So I am wondering how to configure the second router. I am thinking that I connect a CAT5 from one port on the first router to the Internet port on the second router. I am also guessing that I need to assign the the second router a static IP with a different subnet such as 192.168.2.1. I am not sure if the first router still has the default 192.168.1.1. If the first router does use 192.168.1.1 would I need to change the IP on the second one to one on another subnet? Thanks.

You will need a setup like this:
    Modem  ---  new WRT54G  ----  existing WRT54G
                     192.168.2.1              192.168.1.1    ( "Local IP address" )
Modem connects to Internet port of new WRT54G.
LAN port of new WRT54G connects to Internet port on existing WRT54G.
SSID:  different on each router  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  enabled on both routers
encryption:  recommend WPA2, or at least WPA  (can be same or different on the two routers).
    passwords:   different on each router.
channel:  try to stay at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channel 1, 6, and 11 work best, but any two different channels can be used.
Any "port forwarding" used by existing WRT54G must also be done on new WRT54G.
Both routers need a real login password (not "admin" )
New WRT54G will need "Intenet connection type" set to whatever is currently on existing WRT54G.  Internet connection type for existing WRT54G will need to be set to DHCP.

  • I Have a befw11s4 wireless b router. do I need to upgrade this router

My kids play ps3 and ps2.The ps3 is wireless and the ps2 is hardwired.
We have been using this router for a while now running the two  ps2's.
The last few days games they have been real laggy and kick them off.
Is this because I've added two ps3's and 2 laptops which are all wireless?
(having trouble while one ps2 is running and everything else turned off)
My speeds on speedtest look good. Was just wondering if a new router would fix
this problem. Or am I looking in the wrong direction?

One other thing I went on an order the LinksysWRT330N
Is this something that will make my gaming better?
also again I want to thank you for your help
    Yo lennut ,
For Flawless Gaming you need Some tweaks to be taken care of .
WRT330N surely provide some addition to it , though Not much difference with a normal WRT54G.
SO no need to worry about , buying a new router.
Just Connect wirelessly to the wireless network which is yours , through your PS3 or Xbox -360 .
you should be able to log in .
Any prob..? just post here ,

  • Pppoa connection

    Hi all,
So, I stupidly bought an Airport Extreme and have now realised its a piece of rubbish!
I bought the AE as I liked (& needed) the the Guest Network feature. After a lot of hair pulling I now know that the AE does not work with PPPOA (WHY APPLE, WHY!).
Yes, I can run the AE in Bridged mode but then I lose the Guest Network feature as well as remote log in etc.
    Is there a work around.
I really can't believe Apple could be so stupid to leave PPPOA out. I know the US uses PPPOE for ADSL but this is discrimination to the rest of us who need PPPOA.
Even the cheapest of the cheap modems accept PPPOA. Why is this too hard for Apple?
Thanks for putting up with the rant. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know it's an old thread. I just came across this and thought I clarify this:
The Airport cannot do PPPoA because it's an ethernet router, it's a router with an ethernet WAN port.
Through the WAN port it does Ethernet. And thus it can only do PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE).
To do PPP over ATM (PPPoA) it would require an ATM port and a DSL modem with an ATM port.
Thus, Apple didn't leave it out. They did not integrate a modem. All ethernet routers without integrated modem will only support PPPoE and not PPPoA. It's not left out. It's not possible.
If you have to use PPPoA it's possible to set some DSL modems into half-bridge mode. As half-bridge the modem will establish the PPPoA link only.

  • Connecting to wrt54g with a cable

We have a wireless network in the house using a WRT54G router. We need to extend to network to my office which is about 90 feet away. We have tried installing a wireless extender and it didn't work. It was agreed that we needed to attach an actual cable from the router to the computer in the office. We had someone run a cable the full 92 feet and when we hook it up the computer doesn't recognize the connection (the lan connection icon says that the network cable is unplugged). Is there a limit to how far you can run a cable? Anyone have any ideas to get reliable connection to a site about 90 feet away from the main router and computer?

do you know what kind of cable was used?  as in, the connection on one end?  is it a straight through cable or a crossover cable (patch)
can you connect it with a 6 foot cable and will it work?
only thing i could think of other than a actual router problem.
