WRT54G - Gives off signal, but cant connect

I have a wireless router that worked perfectly with a cabel modem, but I now have dsl and it will not work. I have tried everything I know how. Reset everything, downloaded firmware, looked at all the other boards, but nothing works. I have tried automatic configuration and PPPoE and neither have worked. My status on the 192.168.1.1 website has my ip and all the fields as 0.0.0.0 and I cant get it to work. I have tried releasing and renewing.
My ISP is sbcglobal and i have a speedstream modem, if that helps.
Thanks

A)  In your computer, please make sure that your ethernet adapter, and your wireless adapter, are both set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".  To check these setting do B and C below:
B)  Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections > then right click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties".  Then, go to the "General" tab.  Then in the box that says "this connection uses the following items", scroll down to "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" and highlight it.  Next click on the "Properties" button.   On the "General" tab, verify the settings that I mentioned above in A.  If your computer is not set as mentioned above in A, then select the settings in A, then if an "Apply" button appears, click on it, otherwise click on "OK" until all windows are closed.  NOTE:  If you changed any settings, DO NOT exit the windows by clicking on the "X" in the right corner, you must click on "OK".
C)  Next, repeat the entire step B above, except, this time, in Network Connections, right click on your wireless adapter and select "Properties"
D)  If you changed any settings in B or C, reboot computer, then try again to connect, by ethernet cable, through your WRT54G.  If you have trouble, temporarily turn off your computer software firewall, and try again to connect.
If you still have trouble, try the following:
You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
5) Power down the router.
6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
11)  If you get this far without problems, then power down your entire network.  Then, using an ethernet cable, connect your speedstream modem to the Internet port of your WRT54G.  Leave your computer wired to a LAN port on the WRT54G.   Power up the modem and allow it to fully boot.   Power of the WRT54G and allow it to fully boot.   Power up your computer.  Turn off the wireless adapter in your computer.  Now try to connect to the Internet.  Your system should work.  If you have a problem, temporarily turn off your computer software firewall, and try again.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead.  Report back with this problem.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt.   Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help,  please state the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.  Also report what you found in steps B, C, and D.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Please can someone help me? Have iphone 4 and just returned home from abroad where the phone worked fine. Now it wont receive wifi. It picks up signal and shows on phone but cant connect to internet. Computers and ipod all working ok

Hi, please can someone help me?
Have just returned home from abroad where my iphone 4 worked perfectly.
Now at home it wont receive wifi. It picks up the signal which shows in phones display but cant connect to the internet. Computers and ipod all working fine so I assume it must be a problem with the phone.
Have checked that wifi is turned on and tried resetting phone to no avail

    Hello melissa82686,
From your description, it sounds like you may have been using the SMS feature of Continuity in iOS 8. If this is the case and it has somehow become misconfigured after a recent change, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
    SMS
With Continuity, all the SMS and MMS text messages you send and receive on your iPhone also appear on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch. Even if the person you’re communicating with doesn’t have an iPhone. And regardless of what phone they have, you can reply from whichever device is closest to you, including your iPad or Mac. You can also initiate a  conversation by clicking a phone number in Safari, Contacts, or Calendar.
To use Continuity for SMS and MMS with your iPhone and your Mac, iPad or iPod touch
Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch need to use iOS 8.1, and your Mac needs to use OS X Yosemite.
Sign in to iMessage on your iPhone, your other iOS devices, and your Mac using the same Apple ID.
    On your iPhone:
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By, and add a check to both your phone number and email address.
Go to Messages > Text Message Forwarding, and enable the device(s) you would like to forward messages to.
Your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch will display a code. Enter this code on your iPhone to verify the SMS feature.

  • Able to join wifi network, but cant connect to web or itunes

Picked up 16 GB iPod Touch today at Best Buy. Able to sync music ok. No problems with sound quality using good earphones.
Touch is good but takes a fair amount of pressure. Guess I will get adapted
Able to join my home wifi network, but cant connect to an website or ITunes wifi- says it can't find the server. I entered my WEP key and pressed join. I have a wifi icon with 3 bars. Did I miss a step?
Am converting a few tv shoes so I can test video

Did you try putting it to sleep/turning it back on. It originally did that for me, I put in my key for my network (which is hard, as its many many digits and letters) and it said it couldn't find the server. I turned it off, and back on, started up the iTunes store, and it connected automatically and worked.

  • The computer sees the airport signal but cannot connect to the internet

I have a imac g5 connected wirelessly to my base station & an airport express. The mac part connects to the internet using the network without any problem. My problem is that the pc portion (using Windows XP) of my imac will not connect to the internet using the wireless network. It shows a strong signal but no connectivity. One of the comments that comes up is that the network didn't assign a network address to the computer (I assume the PC portion). Any thoughts how I can get my computer to connect to the wireless network from the PC portion of my mac.
    many thanks.

Make sure your Firewall settings are correct. I'm going to share some of my settings in the PC area (please bear in mind that these IP addresses could differ from system to system)
My Windows Firewall is DISABLED. You could do the same temporary and see if it works. I use Zone Alarm Pro Firewall. Make sure in my Control Panel ==> Network connection status, your device shows Airport Express wireless device or router.
Depending in your Internet service provider and geographical zone the IP address could be different.
    Example:
    Zone Alarm Windows settings:
TRUSTED ZONES ==> Loopback Adapter 127.0.0.0.1
    PC IP address 192.169.1.3 (example)
    Gateway 192.169.1.254
    DHCP Server 10.0.1.1
    DNS 10.0.0.1
IN AIPORT EXTREME SETTINGS ( Make sure you are in your Imac side or Mac Os)
    Id 192.169.1.5
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Router 192.169.1.254
    Connection Automatic
Ethernet ==> Automatically (through Airport Utility)

  • Windows sees airport but cant connect, windows sees airport but cant connect

Set up internet sharing on my iMac, my android phone connects, my daughters iPod connects, no problem, her PC however sees my iMac wifi but cant connect to it, doesnt ask for password or anything?

With the cable modem cabled to the Base Station's ethernet WAN port (the one labelled with the "circle of dots" icon) pull power to both the Base Station and the modem for at least five minutes. Then plug the modem into power and wait a minute. Then plug the Base Station into power and wait a minute. Then try internet access again.

  • WRT54G router set up, Wireless network found, but cant connect.

I've had this router working for over a year but for whatever reason, it stopped working about a week ago. Powering off the router and cable modem usually works but not this time, so I attached a cable from a laptop to the router and tried to run the setupWRT54G setup CD. After step 7, it kept repeating itself in a loop... trying to reconfigure the router and asking for the password. Finally, I exited and the window message box said "Setup is not complete, continue exiting?"  So I accessed the router setup thru IE via the cable:  Http:\\192.168.1.1 and set up the network and gave it a new name, channel 7, etc. My wife can access the network from her work laptop via wireless, so its working for her. As for the other laptop and other desktop in our home, when we search for available networks, we can see out network and click "Connect", ... supply the router password that I issued in the router setup, but it says that it cant connect after a minute of trying. What have I done wrong? One laptop can access the network and two cant. Before last week, all 3 could access the wireless network. FYI - I downloaded and installed ther latest fimware from the LINKSYS website (V8.XX), but no difference. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Keep in mind that the router setup password is not the same thing as the encryption key that you use to connect wirelessly to the router.
If it works normally from your wife's computer, I'd be looking at the settings on your computer first, rather than the router's.
In network -> TCP/IP -> properties is it set to get an IP address automaticaly?
If the above aren't the issue, I would do a hardware reset of the router back to factory defaults and enter your settings again from scratch. That's a recommended step after upgrading or reloading the firmware anyway, even if you weren't having this trouble

  • 3g Connected but "cant; connect to internet try later often .WHY?

I AM connected to a 3g 2 Gb I compose a mail and when I want to sent it I get a message across the page saying." cannot conect to hotmail please check that you are connected which I did 5 times still Zilch! nut! nine! nothing!

I had a similar incident last fall. For some unknown reason, after having all our systems connect to Airport/Internet perfectly for years, it suddenly stopped connecting, even though I had a strong Airport signal.
After some troubleshooting, I found that if I applied security to my network it refused to connect, and would ONLY connect if the security was left off. We live in a residential area where all our neighbours/friends have wireless, so I had no alternative but to leave the security off, something I have never done. No matter what I tried it would not connect once security was applied, so I left it off. (Interestingly, if security was applied I had those yellow dots in Network Prefs, too.)
Recently, I thought I'd try it again and apply security and it worked first time, and normally, like it always did, so security is back on. I have no idea to this day why for a number of weeks it refused to connect if there was security, but would connect no problem without security. All is back to normal now, thankfully.
I don't know if this will help you at all, but thought I'd mention it so you can try your network without security and then applying it - see if there's any difference.
    Rachel.

  • Wireless signal but no connection

I have a Linksys WRT54gX2. When I make a wired connection from my modem to my computer (Vista - latest SP) I get a connection to the internet on my computer. When I run a network cord from the modem to the wireless router and then a network cord to the computer, two things happen:
I do not get a connection to the internet on my computer.
With laptops and iPods that are trying to connect wirelessly, I can see that the wireless signal exists, and the devices can connect to the signal, but no internet connection passes through.
There are no firmware updates that I can find for this device, I have powered the router on/off for 30 seconds, and I have used the reset button.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Mark

It means to say that your modem and router are not talking to each other. You need to configure the router to talk to the modem.

  • [WRT54G v7] Wired is okay but cant connect to wireless

Hi guys, I just got this new Linksys WRT54G and set it up for my network. I originally had a BEFSR41 for my wired network and connected it to a wireless FON access point for my wireless needs. I got the WRT54G to reduce the clutter since it would make sense to get an all in one router. Anyway, I ran the CD that came in the box and everything went smooth. I was able to connect my desktop PC and my PS3 with no problems on wired. I could browse the net, download and etc. Things became gritty when I decided to connect my HP laptop on wireless. It could see the router but when I got connected, I couldn't surf the internet. So I tried changing the wireless settings of the router to see if it was the problem but to no avail. I tried changing the wireless settings even to a point of disabling the WPA/WEP keys. Just to make sure it wasn't the laptop, I attached the wireless FON access point to the router. Surely enough, I was able to get online wirelessly with the FON router thru my laptop. I then decided to reset the router. I turned it off, left it for a minute or so, renewed/released my IP on the laptop, restarted it to make sure but I still couldn't connect wirelessly. My wired connections on the PC and PS3 were okay though. Any suggestions before I send this back to the shops for replacement?

I'm assuming that your laptop is able to connect to other wifi networks. I've only seen a few Gv7 routers. You can reset the router and start all over. Do not use the cd. Set it up using the web interface.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • WRT54G HELP...FINDS SIGNAL BUT CANT FIND INTERNET

I DONT GET IT AND I WANT TO USE MY ITOUCH!!!!!

The computers which are connected to your router are they able to go online. First Check the wireless settings of your router, and make sure you are connecting to your own wireless network and typing a right security key, and check whats the IP address you are getting it on your IPOD.

  • Can connect via ethernet cable, have good Airport signal but no connection

    Hey folks,
Pesky problem. I'm trying to connect to my wireless airport extreme basestation and having problems. Everythings hooked up correctly and if I plug the ethernet cable from the modem directly to the powerbook it works fine. The odd thing is that my computer sees the base station, it has good signal, and it tells me I'm connected to the internet via airport.
Why then can I not actually acess it? Any thoughts?...it's comcast high-speed in case that matters.
    Cheers,
    Sean

    Sean,
---- I was trying to get a link to another similar thread, where one of the experts (I'm not one of them) made some recommendations, but I can't seem to find it.
---- Is your Network Preferences selected for Airport as well as ethernet, and is Airport at the top of the list? Anyway, the fact that your direct connection PB to modem is working fine, may be the very thing causing your problem. The modem looks for the PB (MAC address?). So, you can do an hardware reset, or if not then unplug it for a good while (not tooggle the power on & off, but I think I saw someone even recommend overnight). Shutdown the AEBS & PB.
---- Then after you powerup the modem & it connects with the ISP (it takes just a short few minutes, you can watch the lights), then power up the airport, then after its connected up to the modem (again, a few minutes, you can watch the lights), bootup the PB.
---- I wish that I could have found the other thread for you, as the experts do an extremely better job of this.
    -------- Gino

  • [WRT54GL] laptop sees the network but cant connect

    Hey everyone,

Readjust the wireless settings on your router and try to connect your network again.....
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
