WRT54G goes brain dead

First of all, the problem I am seeing occurs on an older version of firmware (not sure which one) and the latest (1.02).  Also, I tried this on another WRT54G, with the same result.  2 different routers, and 2 different firmwares.
My ISP (a wireless network, but the output of the modem is a standard Ethernet cable which plugs into the WAN port of the router), seems to reset their tower overnight most nights.  Bottom line is my ISP connection is down for some time (minutes probably).  The WRT54G goes belly up aftwards.  It "thinks" it's connected (the lights all flash correctly, and the status tab in the admin console says it's connected), but there is no access:  no browser, no VOIP, no pinging.  I can reset the router by pulling the plug or doing a disconnect/connect sequence on the status tab, and all is well again.  I have verified this belly-up condition manually:  I can disconnect the WAN ethernet connection for a few minutes, and then connect it back, and the WRT54G has gone brain dead:  no connection.
I have configured the WRT54G manually, and using their installation wizard.  Like I said, 2 different routers, 2 different firmwares (including the latest one).
I borrowed a Motorola WR850G.  Guess what?  It works!  If you disconnect the WAN and reconnect, it just starts working again, no reboot necessary.  So, what is going on with the WRT54G?  Surely this is such a basic issue (recovering from WAN-side lost connectivity), that I can hardly believe this product can't protect itself from this issue.  Help!

You may want to check for PPOe and also make sure that your router is configured with the correct TZ and DST settings. Some ISPs use domain controllers that are very time sensitive. And since DST has changed, you may be running into this problem with your linksys devices.
Good luck.

How do you know it is not charging? Do you see anything on the screen at all? Have you tried a reset? Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons until you see the Apple logo and then release. If the phone was completly dead, it may take up to 15 seconds or more for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Ilife install is brain dead

I imported an Iphoto library from someone who had a more recent version of iphoto that I had. I got an error saying I needed to install the newer iphoto. No problem I've been thinking about upgrading anyway. I install ilife 2008 which runs fine. I notice it is installing itunes even though I already have 8.02 installed. When I start itunes it says it is corrupted an I need to re-install from scratch. I download itunes and reinstall. This works and there is no music loss. Here is the question.
Why can't the ilife install use common sense when installing and at least ask if you intend to load an older version. It should give you the option of leaving it alone. Today's option of corrupting the existing 8.02 version is brain dead.

I just went through the same exact thing!! It was pretty frustrating!

  • Brain Dead iPod

I have a problem similar to Steve's. Mine is easily recreatable. When listening to an audiobook (.m4b) file. Hit pause, then menu to top menu, and select SLEEP. Ipod turns off, and will not restart unless the hold / select / menu procedure is used. Happens every time. If I go and listen to and MP3 file, and then sleep, it seems to work normally. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I try to shutdown by listening to a song, but sometimes I set pause on an audiobook, and it times itself out to sleep... unfortunately it's brain dead after that.

    hi CoMpX!
... we can't possibly let your dad go on thinking dark thoughts ...
first check to see if you've got a fast user switching issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93764
... but if that isn't it, try:
    (1) do a
    b repair install
(it tends to fix precisely this problem). Go to your add/remove programs, select itunes, click "change/remove",
    b but
    this time select "repair".
... and if that does work:
    (2) try this tip:
Scott Patrie, "iTP: The software required for communicating with.", 11:38pm Oct 8, 2004 CDT
... and if that doesn't work:
    (3) try a
    b clean uninstall
    prior to reinstalling:

  • WRT54g may be dead.....

So I am thinking my faithful WRT54g has died.....or atleast the ethernet port did. I can connect wirelessly to it, BUT it won't connect to the internet. Regardless of how many times I power down both the modem and router. This started happening a couple of days ago, but normally a power down of the router fixed the issues. That stopped working.....well today. So powered down both router and modem several times to no avail. So I am working off of a spare WRT110 that I had bought thinking it would be better.....it's not. It's horrible with only maybe 5 ft of range. Anywho, I digress. Is there anyway to verify that indeed the ethernet port is dead? It's a completely stock WRT54g, no DDWRT, not even the latest firmware. If I recall correctly it has 1.5??? that may not be right but it won't let me upgrade it either.Tried that a second ago.
Otherwise it looks like I'll be buying a new router tonight.  Wondering if maybe the constant power down/up messed up some sort of configuration or IP between the router and the modem. Not sure.....I am only know enough that I'm dangerous.

another odd development in the story.
Soooo I bought a WRT110 about 6 months back, was a refurb didn't pay much for it, tried it out and it was horrible. Back in the box, and on the shelf with other useless technologies. Anywho I hook it up today just to get some kind of internet. In a weird "yeah this isn't going to work moment" hooked the 2 routers together via standard cat 5 cable that came with my WRT110.....and voila I have internet again using the 54g.
So right now I am connected via the 54g wireless signal, which is hard wired from port 4 on the 54g to port 4 on the 110. Oddly enough it works, BUT it isn't very stable and my iPhone won't connect to the internet from this. Going to try the hard reset as something just isn't adding up here.

Do that repeatedly and you soon will have a completely useless battery on your hands.
Solution - charge it up BEFORE it auto shuts off on you.
Repeatedly deep cycling a Lithium cell will ruin it much faster than charging it when only partially discharged.

  • Brain dead on adding a simple text rollover...

    Hi there -
As my title indicates, I'm having an issue. Captivate 8. I have an interface with a set of graphic buttons, and a hidden set of labels associated with the slides. Clicking a button goes to that topic's slide. I want to use an old-fashioned rollover event to show the caption which then disappears on rollout. I'm working in a responsive project. Optimally (and historically) I'd just use the caption in association with the button's rollover state. However, I can't see how to do that in Captivate 8.

    Hello,
Responsive design is for HTML5 output only. Rollovers are not supported for HTML5, AFAIK. How do you do a rollover on a smartphone? You can check the HTML5 Tracker (Project menu), that will tell you which objects are not supported (was also the case in previous versions).
Hint/Success/Failure captions are not on rollover, sorry.

  • LUMIA 928 BRAIN-DEAD FRACAS

OK...upgraded from an HTC Trophy to a Nokia Lumia 928 in August 2013...since then the Lumia has 'frozen up'...'locked up' THREE times. First two occurances, the pressing low volume and start buttons together for "soft re-set" worked fine -
however----latest incident (Wed. Nov. 6), "soft re-set" unsuccessful, phone shows "invalid SIM card" and calls coming in and going out are inoperable...PLUS phone only works for a few minutes AFTER connecting to charger...BUT email, internet WILL work (albeit only a few minutes)...ANSWERS???? IDEAS????

I have the same problem on all three of my Nokia phones. Customer service sent out a replacement every 30 days and after 30 days my phone  turned off completely and is unresponsive to soft or hard reboots.
So i loss all my photos and need to reinstall all my apps and songs and videos again for the third time a whole day of transferring and getting some photos off the cloud again.
I wish customer service would admitt that Nokia Windows phone has Major issues they won't even exchange it for an iPhone or Android phone They only can give me a rebuild Nokia phone again for the FOURTH TIME

  • Shows battery dead wont charge then works with a full charge then goes back dead again?

my phone shows the battery is dead. It wont charge. Then ever once in a while it will turn on full charge. Does anyone know what is wrong or how to fix this?

In several threads here and other forums, I read some peculiar "solution": put it in a freezer for two hours when switched off, and let it come back on room temperature and switch it on. I know it sounds ridiculous but the poster tried it and insisted he got it working. (I suppose that after taking it out of the freezer, put it in a plastic bag and close this firmly, to avoid condensation).
But I should have it replaced, before the freezing experiment (if you want to try that, there is a humidity sensor in it so Apple can see if there is condensation, I would not do it). It is probably a partly "skinned" connection in the battery electronics part.

  • WRT54G ver.6 "Dead ?"

I need some Help i have a linksys wireless router WRT54G ver.6.(Vista)  It was working fine for years then I come home from work and can't get internet.  By-passed router and I get internet.  All lights on router are saying working ok but can't get a connection. I can't even long onto the IPS address for the set-up? I tried all of the Vista repair but gives me an answer at the end can't fix problem.  I'm ok with computers but not an expert. but I'm thinking it's a readability problem with the internet?  Any help or maybe it's time to buy a new one?  Thanks

Have you tried a hard 30-30-30 reset? First power off your router and remove all cables.  Then plug back in the power cord and let it boot.  When the power light stops blinking and is solid, locate the recessed reset button and press it in holding for 30 seconds. Remove power while still pressing in the reset button for 30 seconds more. Place power back to router for 30 last seconds and release the reset button.  Power off the unit and plug your main PC back into port 1 and your modem back into the WAN port. Power on and reconfigure your settings.  Test unit to see if your internet functionality has returned.

  • Gone ACL brain-dead

I need to create an ACL that will allow in & outbound traffic between 10.34.44.62-126 and 10.35.44.192-254.
this ACL is going in a 3750.
    Any ideas?

Something like this, break the ip's into subnets so you don't have too many ace's. So that would be...
    10.34.44.62
    10.34.44.63
    10.34.44.64/26
    and
    10.35.44.192/25
    access-list 100 permit ip host 10.34.44.62 10.35.44.192 0.0.0.127
    access-list 100 permit ip host 10.34.44.63 10.35.44.192 0.0.0.127
    access-list 100 permit ip 10.34.44.64 0.0.0.63 10.35.44.192 0.0.0.127
    access-list 101 permit ip 10.35.44.192 0.0.0.127 host 10.34.44.62
    access-list 101 permit ip 10.35.44.192 0.0.0.127 host 10.34.44.63
    access-list 101 permit ip 10.35.44.192 0.0.0.127 10.34.44.64 0.0.0.63
    int vlan 34
    ip access-group 100 in
    int vlan 35
    ip access-group 101 in
I don't know what your vlans are but that should give you a good idea.

  • Brain dead technicians

Has anyone else tried the so called on line tech. Help ? Don't waste your time believe me I have spent no less than 2 hours on line with some tech. That goes by the name of Benjamin trying to get a wireless connection to a second computer in my house connected. Went as far as letting him view my computer to reset and configure it to be able to connect to internet. Time and time again  went through the settings and nothing. after the first hour or so when the " You To Can Be A Verizon Technician " book he was reading from fell and he had no clue what page he was on , he started talking to me like I was someone with the IQ of a rock . Where does Verizon find these people? If you can't help me OK I'll move on but don't waste my time doing the same thing again and again. And to top it off get disconnected, now when someone at the beginning of the conversation asks if there is a back up number he can have, Just in case of a disconnection he will be able to call you back  !!!!  Why ask that ? Your not going to, Should have been my first clue. What a great commercial that would be that's a company someone could rely on. Could it get any better ? Oh yes it can there is a Did we answer all your questions ? Was are tech. Helpful ?etc.etc. After answering all their questions go to submit and you get sorry there is only 30 minutes to reply. Dam Verizon if you can't hire real techs. The least you could do is hire people than can tell time.   OK that's it I'm done venting.  I do believe what goes around comes around and Verizon, yours is much over due.....  call when it does  LMAO

Verizon will just try to sell out like they're doing in West Virginia, thus not having to worry about internet customers.  I've spent many hours on telephone with Verizon techs and used up about all my cell phone minutes for over three months now.  I'm going to cable and get better service.

  • WRT54G Is it dead - how to check

The router appears to be dead, a box with lights but no communication with PC.
Neither a hardwired or wireless connection to PC will allow even a simple *admin* connection. Appears as if there is no communication.
How do I check to see if the router is dead?

Power down your router. Wait a minute and reconnect.
