Wrt54g help with 2wire modem

I have AT&T DSL and the modem is a 2Wire.  I have a Linksys router downline from the modem and has been working fine until I lost power the other day.  Now the linksys can't see the internet.  All the laptops in my house say they are connect to the linksys, but the linksys can't get past the 2wire.  Help please.

Before you got the router, how did you get online on the 2wire? Did you need a username/password or were you online right away?
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • Need help configuring 2wire modem to Linksys54G thru wds

I have a 2wire modem and want to feed my wrt54g router internet without an ethernet cable. I know that I have to set PPPoe, username & password but how do I assign it my ip addy?

    You have several options:
    1)  You might be able to find third party firmware, such as dd-wrt, to convert your WRT54G  to a "wireless range expander"  (i.e. repeater).
    2)  You could buy a WRE54G wireless range expander (i.e. repeater).   The specs say it works with wireless g, but I am uncertain if it will work with your 2wire.
Note: Using a repeater (solution 1 or 2) will cut your wireless bandwidth in half.  This is because the repeater must split its 54 Mbps bandwidth, half to receive and half to re-transmit.
    3)  You can connect the modem and WRT54G together by using two PLE200 devices.  PLE200 devices connect together by sending signals through your home electrical wiring.  Your setup would look like this:
    modem --- PLE200 ===== PLE200 --- WRT54G
Note:  PLE200 do not like to be on power strips.  They prefer to be plugged directly into a wall socket.  Electric curcuit breaker boxes usually have two columns of switches, one on the right side and one on the left side.  The two PLE200 devices should be connected to sockets that are wired to the same side of the electric box.

  • Problem w/ WRT54G connecting with ADSL modem...no Internet even when 'wired' connected

    Hi ladies/gents,
need help...not sure what to do...
i have ADSL modem, and i have a cable running from the modem to the "internet" port of my Linksys router.  i have another cable from Port 1 (or whichever) to my laptop.  modem works/is connected, router works/is connected, cables are good.
YET, i am getting NO internet...forget wireless here...i am just talking about the simple wired connection here and it is not giving me any Internet.  If i disconnect the modem cable from the Internet port and connect directly to laptop, then Internet works fine....frustrating.
i do know that the ISP says that they use Automatic DHCP (or something like that)
    Any ideas!?

This is not really a fix, however, what I found out from having the same problem (Limited or no connectivity) is for some reason my verizon modem (Westell 6100) and the router (Wrt54g) had the same IP address.  I changed the router IP address several time and it would alway end up with the same problem.
What I ended up doing (mind you its for no other reason than I wanted to connect to the internet and was sick of the problem) was connect my modem to the #1 port of the router and use the other three ports for my computers thinking that if they had the same IP address maybe it would work that way.  I know very little about how this stuff work but it did fix my problem.  I have been hooked up that way for months and haven't lost speed or connection since.  I hope this helps and maybe someday someone who know why it works will tell me so I will know.
    Good Luck !!

  • Help connecting a WRT54G to a 2Wire 2700HG modem/firewall/wireless router

I recently had to replace my DSL modem with a new 2Wire 2700HG.  I have this hard-wired setup working fine both wired and wirelessly to a laptop:
    -----phone line-----DSL Modem------ethernet cable---------PC
A friend gave me a Linksys WRT54G that I would like to hook into the setup like this: (I had never connected the wrt54G to the old modem).
    -----phone line-----DSL Modem------ethernet cable---------LINKSYS ------ ethernet cable-----------PC
I reset the WRT54G and ran the setup program, starting with the top setup and connecting and powering-up the WRT54G as instructed by the setup program.  At the end of the process the setup program tested the connection to the internet and found taht it could not connect.  The instructions were to reset the WRT54G and try again or power down the WRT54G and power it back up.  I did both of these things and still it could not acces the internet through the WRT54G (I can still access the net wirelessly through the DSL Modem.  My question is CAN this setup work, and if so, how do you set it up to get it to work?  As near as I can tell the WRT54G is not communicating with the 2700HG (DSL Modem) at all.  Help!

if the 2wire router is connected on the internet port of the wrt54g .. access the setup page of the wrt54g and go to the "status" tab..check the internet ip add...if it is 192.168.1.x , change the local ip add of the wrt54g to 192.168.2.1 .. do a power cycle and check whether it works
if not , connect the wrt54g from its ethernet port to the ethernet port of the 2wire router .. change the ip add of the wrt54g to be in the range of the ip add of the 2wire router...and disable the DHCP server of the wrt54g ..

  • Is it possible to use an Airport Extreme router with AT&T 2Wire modem/router?

My AT&T 2Wire modem/router does not have great range, speed, or compatibility with my Macbook and iMac.  I bought an Apple Airport Extreme to try to remedy my problem, however, I did not realize it was purely a router.  Is it possible to use the 2Wire modem/router as just a pure modem and connect it to the Airport Extreme?  Would it be more beneficial to purchase a new modem that does not have wireless functionality?  I have looked at previous posts but couldn't find any definite answers.  Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!  Thanks!

The easiest route to take here would be to simply turn off the wireless function on the 2-Wire modem/router and then configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to provide a dual band wireless network.
If the 2-Wire performance shortcomings are the result of other wireless interference issues at your location, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme may not perform any better, wireless wise.  It's not possible to know things like this in advance....more of a case of you won't know until you try.
In theory, it might be possible to configure the 2-Wire product as a simple modem...but I doubt that AT&T would be willing to tell you how to do this or provide support in the event of problems.
It's getting to be hard to find a simple DSL modem these days, and even if you do, it will have to be re-configured as a Bridge to work correctly with the AirPort Extreme, so that complicates things as well.

  • WRT54G behind a 2wire DSL modem

I just picked up a WRT54G to replace a old Microsoft router I'd been using as a base station for a few years. However when I run the easylink install it doesn't seem to detect the router at all. I have a 2wire gateway DSL modem going to a 8 port switch that my router is connected to (the router is on the far side of the house where I want the wireless), there are a few other PC's plugged into the switch also. I've tried hooking everything in straight to the DSL modem but nothing. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on here? I don't really want to put the DSL modem into bridged mode for a few different reason.

you may be forced to disable the modem's firewall in order for you to get internect access.  i had problems with a 2wire modem.  the solution i found was to disable the firewall on the modem...

  • Comcast Troubles with RCA modem and WRT54G

Can anyone help me set up my router with comcast?  I have searched the web endlessly trying to find a fix to set up my router with my modem.  When my computer is hard wired into my RCA modem thinks work like a breeze.   AS soon as I connect my router things go south.  I have endlessly tried cloning Mac address, power cycles (removed battery), to no avail.
    Currently I have
Comcast Triple Play with an RCA Modem
    Linksys WRT54g running Tomatoe firmware.
Im wondering if the firmware is the issue, or perhaps I am missing a step with that firmware.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have no knowledge about tomato firmware and how to configure it. However, configuration should be the same with Linksys firmware. It might be on a different tab or different name though. Here's the configuration.

  • WRT54G V6 strange problem with cable modem

I have a cable modem with Comcast Digital Voice. I have a WRT54G V6 with the latest firmware. After much discussion and troubleshooting on the phone with Linksys rep, I returned and swapped the router. No change to the problem. I've seen similar issues, but not exactly the same one, on this board. Here's the situation:
I have an XP computer connected via Ethernet directly to the router. I have 1 Mac Laptop (OSX) and 1 Thinkpad (XP) laptop that use the home network interimly via wireless. I use WEP, but no special filtering.
I can get everything set up fine, and all will work for some time. Like I've seen some other's say, about 30 - 90 minutes worth of online time, and the router seems to hang - BOTH wirless and wired. During this time, my wireless signal does not drop out. But I sudddenly cannot get to the internet.
What makes it especially odd is that my digital voice (VoIP) does NOT drop out, meaning my internet connection is still up (and the cable modem shows no signs of trouble - and a reset of the cable modem makes no difference by itself.
The only thing that fixes the situation is a hard restart of the router (meaning unplugging it and then plugging it back in).
The Linksys help folks had me do a complet reset of everything and then even had me change some parameters, including a change of channel, manual MTU, etc. Nada.... Then I changed the router to a new one... Same-o same-o.
I suppose the Cable Modem could have a bad ethernet port -but I read SO many things similar to this problem on the board that I doubt it.
And to think I dumped my NetGear!!! (It also had problems - that were associated with unstable wireless).
Any help is appreciated. It's a real pain.

One other thing... When it drops out, I cannot even get to the router admin page via my web browser and wired connection to the router. So perhaps this has something to do with DHCP server dieing?

  • LaPastenague can you help? TC is refusing to work with existing modem/router

My home office network setup is driving me mad!  I've identified the issue - my TC is competing with my modem/router.  What I haven't been able to do is fix the problem.  I've tried setting it up as a bridge, tried turning off wireless and nothing has worked.  Are you able to help before I throw an almighty tantrum?
    Here's my set up:
    * Primary computer is a MacBook Air which is on wireless 24/7
    * Secondary computer is a MacBook Pro, also operating on wireless
    * Time capsule is used as a server of sorts, to store all our files which are then accessed via the laptops.  It's only a few months old.
    * Router is also new (yes, someone sold us incompatible devices).  It's a Netgear D6200.
    * We've set up both a 5G and a 2.4G wireless network, but operate on 5G 99% of the time
    * There are 2 x Airport Express in the house - one connected to the printer, one connected to the surround sound system
    * There are also 2 x Apple TVs and 1 x iPhone connected to the network
Are you able to help me figure out the best setup?  I know it's possible - I just can't figure out how to do it

I presume the modems you've suggested are all compatible with my apple devices?  I read somewhere amidst your recommendations that apple doesn't play nicely with non-apple modem/routers.
Depends on brands.. Netgear is near the bottom.. overall TP-Link is pretty good.. they are certainly aware of the need to test against Apple products and special protocols, and tweak here and there to get better results.
It is important to understand though.. what I want you to do is basically turn the modem router into a dumb modem.. it will have no part in the network other than translation of ethernet packets to ATM phone networking packets. All the routing will be handled by the Apple router.
Yes, the Netgear is a wifi/DSL modem & router.  I'm using wireless on the Netgear.  I didn't turn wireless off on this device as I assumed I should be relying on that as my router given it was recommended instore.  I'll give that a go now.
    Shakes head::
Never ever believe what the salesman in the store tells you. He always has one at home that works perfectly with every piece of equipment you happen to have. And it fixes warts and herpes.. and most everything.. the bottle says snake oil. Apply liberally to dumb customers.
The reason I suggest a very cheap modem.. is that it will do nothing .. except translate packets. Ethernet to ATM.. ATM to Ethernet.. completely dumb.. You can bridge the Netgear but that seems a horrible waste.. I would prefer you to return it to the store for refund.. or at worst sell it off..
Even if you need to use it as a router.. which we are still getting to.. there is no need to use its wireless.
Anyway keep in touch with how it goes.
Are you in Oz? Who is your ISP?

How do I get extreme to work as the modem and router ?

How do I get extreme to work as the modem and router ?
you can't. the extreme is only a router. you need a separate modem (or disable the wireless part of your old router and use it as a modem - if that's possible).

  • Help with WRT54GS on FiOS (ethernet, not coax)

Hey guys, I'm new here and just trying to get some help with this unsolvable problem that I just started having with my Linksys WRT54GS and Verizon FiOS last week.
To simplify my full story and actual issue here, I put it all into points to try and make it simpler to understand:
-In Fall of 2007, I switch from Comcast to Verizon FiOS after getting screwed over waiting for two weeks and never getting a new router, as the first one was fried in a thunderstorm
-Little brother knocks over the first Actiontec router and it breaks
-Actiontec replacement router's wireless is nonexistant (MI42WR)
-After trying out bridging the Linksys to the Actiontec, it proves to be much more of a pain than actual solution to lack of wireless
-Switched from coax to full cat5 ethernet last year to use Linksys WRT54GS
-Been happily directly connected from ONT to Linksys WRT54GS via cat5 ethernet for the past year while the wireless is perfect for the other computers
    (last week)
-Turned off Linksys router for one night last week to give it an over night rest
-Has not been able to connect to Verizon with old WRT54GS or brand new WRT54GL router (That I'm now returning)
-ONT ethernet light outside still has a green light indicating it's working
-I do not want to bridge the Actiontec and Linksys again
-I do not want to go back to using the Actiontec for anything, but stuck with it for now
-Has reset the connections of the router, computer and released the DHCP plenty of times, but to no avail
-Has upgraded the firmware of my WRT54GS before typing this and still nothing
-No connection for any Linksys router, but the Actiontec works
I can't think of a solution except perhaps trying one from another company, like D-Link.. (sad face) I'm already returning the new router on monday, since I don't believe that my WRT54GS is even broken if the new one isn't connecting either. So I'm just thinking that perhaps Verizon has done something that isn't allowing any of my Linksys routers to connect, since they happily started charging me an extra $10-12 on the FiOS bill without notice. Though at this point, I have a hard time believing that even switching to another router company and using their products will do anything for me..
At this very moment, I'm suffering with this awful stock Verizon router and my parents and aunt have been complaining for the past two weeks. Hopefully someone here knows what the real problem may be that can chime in with some help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yep, I sure have done exactly what you said to do. I wasn't able to edit my post, but that's exactly what I had to do when I was doing tests with the Verizon technician over the phone. I also reset all of the settings within my computer and browsers.. Still, the only router that works is the Actiontec router that I have been trying to avoid. The other Verizon techs during the day don't help at all, but the one time I called at like 2am at least TRIED to help me out with my Linksys router..
I've even gone as far as switching the ethernet cable from the ONT that goes to the WAN port of the Linksys to go to the computer's ethernet port and moving the other end to the Lan 1-4 jacks, while using a whole new cable for the ONT --> Linksys WAN.
I still got the green light from the ONT and I still got no connection from Verizon.. There's no way I'm switching out from Verizon FiOS, but this is really giving me a headache trying to solve this issue.

  • RV110w wont connect with dsl modem for VPN - HELP!

    Hello,
I have bought a RV110w and also a D-Link 320B modem  (replacing my standard Sky broadband router) and I am having difficulty  setting them up.  The D-Link modem works when connected directly with my  laptop via ethernet but when connected into the WAN port on the RV110w  none of the computers on my network have internet access.  The RV110w  dashboard says that the WAN connection is "UP" and gives an IP  address??  Any help with this would be much appreciated.
After  the above issue has been solved I would then like to use the RV110w VPN  facility which I have been unable to set up correcty using QuickVPN.   The laptop that I want as a VPN client is running Windows 8.
I have been trying to sort this for two weeks with no luck!!!
    Matt.

online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

Ok I found " Installing the liksys wireless router with a westell 6100 modem" in the verizon troubleshooting guides. printed the instructions so I would'nt forget. step 1 open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address field.  PROBLEM it comes up with a login screen that I don't know how to sign into. tried the obvious stuff. cannot get past the login screen. I knew this sounded to easy to be true. anyone have any ideas?
