WRT54G: How to disable wireless upon reset

Hello everyone. I have a two-part question as follows:
Part 1: has anyone ever had a problem with a WRT54G router "forgetting" its settings and reverting to the defaults even though you did not press the Reset button? I have had two different people tell me that they configured wireless security but then after several weeks/months the security settings "vanished" and their wireless network was open with no encryption. Is it possible that a brownout or extended blackout could cause this?
Part 2: due to the possibility of this happening, does anyone know how to configure this device so that if it IS reset (i.e. pressing the reset button or anything else that causes a reset), the wireless radio will be disabled until a user MANUALLY logs in via a wired connection and turns it on, or presses the easy setup button? This would prevent a LOT of security problems where people just don't know any better and plug up the router without configuring the security properly. I think linksys should build this option into their firmware: disable the wireless radio until it is manually turned on by either logging into the configuration page or pressing the easy setup button on the front.
I assume that to accomplish part 2, I need a third-party firmware for the router. Any recommendations on which firmware would leave the wireless off by default when reset?
I would be purchasing a new WRT54G for this application, and it would probably be version 8.
Would another router model be better than the WRT54G?
This is for a small business, and I can't take the risk that the wireless network should become unsecured without anyone's knowledge, maybe due to power outage/brownout/firmware bug/etc...
Thank you so much in advance for any advice!

1)  Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise.  Electrical surges and noise are common with power outages, and can also be caused by such things as large motors starting up, or malfunctioning electrical equipment.   Electrical surges and noise can cause routers to loose their settings.
You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series. A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts.  You must have the EMI/RFI filtering.   Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
If your router has forgotten its settings, then you should also download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware.  After the firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
If the above does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.
2)  I do not know of any way to cause the wireless portion of the router to be turned off when the router resets.   In my opinion, this is a security problem, and I agree that it should be fixed.
3)  Rather than getting a new wireless router, you should consider getting a wired router and a WAP (wireless access point).  The advantage of this setup is that you can unplug the WAP when your business is closed.  This would guarantee that, should the wireless security ever fail, at least it would fail during business hours, and you would be likely to notice it.
Alternatively, you could just shut down the wireless router when your business is closed.
If you decide to stay with a wireless router, you should also consider the WRT54GL.  This router has a good record of reliability and is a favorite of those who want to use 3rd party firmware, such as DD-WRT.
Hope this helps.

  • How to disable wireless on wrt54g2?

I have a Linksys router model wrt54g2 v1. My operating system is Windows XP Pro. The router works fine. When I ran setup the first time, I opted to enable wireless (Wi-Fi). However, the computers using the router are all cable-connected to the router, so I do not need the wireless capability. My question: How do I now disable wireless? Do I need to run the CD “Start Setup” process once again? The control panel does not seem to offer any configuration options. I have posted a screen capture of the control panel at http://64.33.7.192/linksys.gif. (I tried without success to post this question at the support Live Chat.) Thanks for your help.

    What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
    Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
    Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance

  • How to disable wireless function in HP printers

We are campus environment, and have hundreds of HP printers deployed.  All of them are connected to the network via TP cables.  However, their wireless components are still up, and broadcast under SSID hpsetup, which are detected by our new campus wireless network as rogue AP or adhoc.  We want to disable the wireless component inside all HP printers, but find no instructions as how to get this done from HP manuals.  Is there anyone knowing how to disable the wireless function in HP printers?  Thanks in advance for your help.

It varies based on model, but often it is found in: Setup > Network > Wireless Radio on/off

  • How to disable drive upon LabView error

I'm running a closed loop PD position controller in Labview 8.5 and NI PCI-6259 M series card and BNC-2120.  I'm sending an analog voltage signal (+/- 10) to a Copley Xenus amplifier (current command) as well as a +5v signal to enable the amplifier.  The controller uses position for feedback.  When labview errors out, the daq card stays in its current state (and keeps sending the 5v enable signal).   For safety reasons, how can I configure my system so that this signal stops being sent out, and the amp is disabled?
    Maciek

The program crashed.  I shut off the amp.  The actuator shaft, which is positioned vertically, dropped to its lowest position due to gravity (it's a linear actuator).  The daq card kept pumping out a high force command, due to the large position error created by the disturbance, as well as the 5v enable signal.  Upon turning the amp back on, the PD controller saw a large difference between desired and actual position, and the actuator shaft shot up forcefully, creating a very dangerous situation.  In the program, I have a case structure which won't enable the amp. unless the difference between desired and actual position is small enough.  But the amp stays enabled when labview crashes.

  • How to disable SQL server 2012 sa password auto reset

We have SQL server 2012 in windows xp and we using sa login and password as null.
My problem is the password automatically reset within 3 hours once,
Anyone can help how to disable the automatically reset password or how to increase the reset time.
    Thanks..!!!

SQL Server never changes any password, someone else is doing this. And it is a high risk to use SA account especially with an empty password!!!
Fully agree. A blank password for sa? In 2015?
Apparently something in your environment pokes around for server instances with blank sa passwords and teaches you a lesson. You could set up an event notification or a DDL trigger to find out that may be. Or just prove that you are smarter than them by
renaming sa. Or even better, prove that you are living in the present and set a strong password for sa. Or even better, disable sa, and only use Windows accounts that are in sysadmin so that you know how did what.

  • How can I disable wireless admin privileges to the router ?

For the sake of better security, how can I disable wireless admin privileges to the router so that the router can only be configured via hardwire connection?
Sorry, but this is not possible.
If you want to limit access to administration of the router, you should change the Base Station password, and only give out that password to those individuals that you want to have access to the administration settings of the router.
The forums have been having problems displaying screenshots, but we will attach one below in the hopes that the problems may be fixed.
Important Note.......even with this,  "security" on the AirPort routers is an illusion.......since a one second press on the reset button will give any user 5 minutes of free access to go in and change any settings that they want.
So, you might want to keep any eye on things.

  • Disabling wireless

A simple enough requirement, you'd think - I wish to disable wireless on the BT Hub, as my computer is permanently connected to it by cable (I have no other wireless devices).
The help page says it's possible (Wireless Configuration under Advanced Setting - simply set wireless enable to 'no'), and in fact I successfully managed to do this just after I installed the hub (the wireless blue light went out as expected).
Today, however, I noticed the blue wireless light back on (I hadn't changed any settings), and the option to disable it (in Advance Settings) is no longer available. I wonder if the upgraded software (it automatically upgraded itself yesterday) has removed the option to disable wireless (and if so, why)? I phoned technical support. They insisted that the default is wireless-enabled and that I can't change it, and that it's always been that way. This contradicts both the help pages and my own experience immediately after installing (not to mention common sense). But they were insistent.
So, I tried something else: Power Save. In theory this seems to do the trick - it turns off wireless, but lets me continue with broadband connection via ethernet cable. Only problem is that you have to schedule it. You can't have it running in Power Save mode all the time. What a pain. In practice it means that even if I schedule Power Save from 04.00 to 03.30, I find that when I turn everything on at the mains in the morning (around 9.00) it's not in Power Save mode. I have to set it to go into Power Save mode at 09.30 (you can't just switch Power Save mode on - you have to schedule it as an event in the future).
Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

    @BMD
You may find that the update has reactivated BTFon. (Customers before a certain date had to opt in to this service but new customers are automatically opted in to BTFon so may not be aware of this).
If you never had BTFon then in theory you still shouldn't have it. You could check if you want by either using a wireless enabled PC and searching for signals or check your status on the BTFon site.
If you are a member of BTFon then you can opt out from their site. It will take upto 48 hours for the request to be carried out. From there the ability to switch the wireless off should come back.
A fix which is a pain if you've set your hub up to how you want it is to do a factory reset thus removing the latest firmware update and putting the wireless turn off ability back into your hub.
