WRT54G Intermittent connection

I am new to this forum.  I joined in hopes that I could find resolution to my issue....
I recently installed a new WRT54G and was previously using the B version which I had no issues with.  I am on my 2nd 54G because I thought the first one was defective.  But this one is having the same issue.  So I know it is not because it is defective.
Now that I have this new 54G router, at least once or twice a day, I have to reset it because I lose connectivity to it.
I have done nothing to the router other than the setup information.
It seems that I lose connectivity to it from both a wireless and wired perspective.
Any assitance with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi! I think you're having problems with the router's firmware. It will be better if you will try to upgrade the router's firmware. It is actually necessary to do so, I think that router has been manufactured not so long time and needs firmware upgrade.

  • WRT54G intermittent Connectivity

I work for a cable company and we use WRT54G wireless router as part of our home networking installations. I recently encountered a random problem with connectivity. I hooked up the router to our broadband modem. I set up the wireless SSID and WEP encryption. When I connected everything (wireless laptop, my work laptop wired, and a PS3 wired) everything worked fine. Then all of a sudden the connection dropped out. When I looked at the router the power light was blinking and the orange light was out. After a second or two the router came back up and the connection was back. It did this around 3 times and then when it the connection dropped out again all the lights on the router were on as if it was connected. When I tried to access the router setup page or the internet for both wired and wireless connections, nothing would connect. After putting a new modem and new router in the same problem was happening. I finally just hooked up my work laptop wired and was able to download the firmware and update the router. When I hooked everything back up, it never lost connection as it did previously. I assumed that fixed it. I just wanted to know if there is an explanation for this problem? The problem seemed to be happening when there was heavy traffic from the connected devices. I was using a WRT54G v8. Any explanation would be great?!? Thanks!!

Mmm, now I'm wondering... did you install the EasyLink Advisor? Because I just tried uninstalling it (I can setup a router by myself, so it wasn't really useful...), and since then, maybe I'm imagining things, but not only my internet connection is stable, but it's going much, MUCH faster than before (ever since I first got the router, I noticed a bit of slowdowns). I had some suspicions that it might have been the problem, since the internet connection would never crash when my computer was off, and the Advisor would lag up my computer big time when it'd try to detect the network.

  • WRT54G Intermittant Connection

II have been using my wireless router for 2 years. About 1 montyh ago I began having to reboot my router and modem to reestablish connectivity. I removed my router from the system and went hardwired via T1 and I have no issues. However when I run the wireless router I have to reboot. It seems that once I reboot it is OK for a while. But ALWAYS in the morning I have to reboot the wireless router and often the modem to eestablish connection. The funny thing is that the wireless connection ALWAYS shows that is is connected with a reasonable signal, but I cannot get on the internet. Ideas??

You can try by upgrading your router's firmware...Follow this link .

  • Intermittent connections to internet with WRT54G

I installed a new unit and I am experiencing intermittent connections to my DSL modem.  When the unit quits the WLAN light goes out.  I can hit the reset button on the back and the unit will work again for a while.  I have also noticed that when I hit the reset button the WLAN light starts dim and then brightens after the reset.  Anybody have any suggestions?

I used to have this problem all the time with my old laptop using a PCMCIA card.  I discovered that the problem was the version of the driver I was running.  The only thing I can suggest would be to make sure you have the latest drivers for all your LAN cardsd, and the latest firmware for the router.  I have had no problems since.

  • WRK54G intermittent connections

    Hello all!
Have intermittent connection issues with my router.
Have 2 pcs, 1 mac, 2 iphones & 1 laptop on network. Most of the time, the iphones cannot connect. Prior to getting the iPhones, the laptop would drop connection. When laptop was broken & was not being used (for a few weeks), the pc's & mac would lose connection and this would be followed by the "configure" webpage, asking to authenticate password.  After 10 minutes or so, could refresh screen and continue surfing. Sometimes, would restart router, and could then reconnect.
This is our second router, the first was experiencing dropped connections & ISP suggested new router. Problem doesn't happen if we remove router from network.
Any suggestions? I've attempted to follow suggestions for WRT54G issues, but nothing seems to have helped. Hubby is about to buy a netgear.
    Thanks in advance!

The Internet is dropping on the wired computer or wireless computer ?
If it is dropping on the wireless computer only then try changing the wireless settings on the router. Open the setup page of the router on the wired computer. Go to the wireless tab. Change the SSID and change the channel to 11. Save the settings. Go to the wireless security sub tab. Check the wireless security mode and key of the wireless network.
Click on advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and Fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.
Now try to connect to the new wireless network on your wireless computer. See if that works.
If the connection is dropping on wired as well as wireless computer then try to upgrade/ re-flash the Firmware of the router. Download the latest firmware on the wired computer. Open the setup page of the router. Go to Administration tab. Click on Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the Firmware file and upgrade the Firmware of the router.

WRT54GS Not Connecting to the PC During Setup
    Someone please Help me!!
I Have a laptop im trying to set up wirelessly through this Router and having problems.
When following the setup disc it keeps coming up that it cant find the router although i have followed the instructions and have them connected via the network cable..
    Any Help anyone.. please?

What is the IP address you are getting on this PC? Check if you can ping to this router with its IP address (default IP: 192.168.1.1) if not then try resetting it for 1 min by pressing the reset button. Once you get the ping then you can try configuring the router.

  • WRT54GS wireless connection becomes unreachable every 3-6 minutes

I just got signed up with COMCAST (TV, Internet, and VOIP). The Linksys WRT54GS is connected to the COMCAST Internet-VOIP box. Everything is working fine except the wireless. I bought the Linksys WRT54GS and when I run "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" from my latop via the wireless the connection becomes unreachable every 3-6 minutes. When I "refresh the list" from the laptop the connection is working. The wireless is using WEP security, the strength during the test is 3-4 bars. The problem has been seen in the same room (7 ft away) with 5 bars. I've not yet contacted COMCAST because at this time my thoughts are that I've misconfigured the Linksys. Allen

    Allen:
If you purchased the router elsewhere, save the call to Comcast. They won't help you.
Try changing to different channels in the router. There may be interference in your area that causes the drop. I would point out that a dropped ping occasionally is normal, although when it negatively impacts your ability to stay connected, you'll want to find the issue.
The default channel on the router is 11 I think. Try going through all the channels from 1 on up and running each one for a period of time. Your wireless card doesn't need any changes made; it should reset itself to the new channel within a few seconds.

  • Intermittent connection issue

I am having connection issues again as I did 2 years ago. The connection gets dropped intermittently. Sometimes the modem has a red light on the internet indicator and other times the DSL blinks and won't sync. The tech gave me a new modem, but I still have the same problem. 2 years ago the problem got resolved when they switched me to another line. I keep a spreadsheet on the tranceiver stats. The margin dB varies 20.2/21 (down/up) to 8.8/21 to 18.1/29 for instance. Line attenuation stays pretty much the same between 51.4/29 (down/up) to 49.4/29. Tranmit power varies 9.3/11.9 to 15.7/11.9 to 16.2/11.9 (down/up). I cannot seem to get someone to fix the line issues coming to my home. How can I get this fixed?
    Craig

No, it is still ongoing. I have a field tech working on it. I was away for some days so couldn't respond. As you know about the intermittant connect problem because of an unconditioned line. Also, I was unable to obtain 1.5Mb/sec connect speed and Verizon only gave me 1.1Mb/sec. This week I am unable to connect at that speed and is now only 0.928Mb. I don't know why this happened, but I can tell you I am unsatified with this connection. I am really unhappy with not being able to get a measly 1.5Mb/sec connection speed when the rest of the world is getting 50Mb/sec or greater speeds.
As a stock holder of Verizon I am even more disappointed in their neglect with the DSL service. I am working on a letter to investor relations on this matter.

  • I had a problem with my WRT54GS not connecting to my inte...

I had a problem with my WRT54GS not connecting to my internet until I cloned my old routers mac address. I was using a BEFW11S4 which was bullet proof and worked for several years until I changed to Wireless G. Upon purchasing the WRT54GS and setting up all parameters exactly like I had before I could not make any connections, wireless or otherwise until I cloned my mac address to the same address as my previous router. Apparently my ISP had that mac address registered and would not properly perform DHCP even though all other paremeters were correct. I read lots of messages here on line with issues with the WRT54GS connecting and this fixed my problem outright. If you upgrade from a previous generation router (Linksys or otherwise apparently) copy your old routers mac address and clone it to your new router and you should be able to connect. This fixed my problem after several hours and days of troubleshooting. Good Luck Karnage

As an alternative to using MAC address cloning, you can phone your ISP, tell them you have a new router, and tell them to reset their system to accept the MAC address of your new router.   This way, you won't have to remember the old MAC address, in the event that you need to reset your router to factory defaults.

  • Wireless Problem intermittent connection

    Hi,
We have three WLC on our network that runs all at the same time. We experienced intermittent connectivity and all we did was reload the WLC3 to make it normal again. I attached the logs of the three WLC below. Hope someone can help. Thanks!

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!! & according to your Internet Service Provider configure the router & you should be able to go online wirelessly without any issue.

  • [WRT54G] Random connection drops on hardwired computer but not wireless connections

I bought a WRT54G, it's a version 6 if that matters, using the latest Linksys firmware.
The WRT54G is connected to my main desktop and DSL modem, dynamic IP and PPPoE. I set the router with a static IP, there's WPA2 going as well.
I have a notebook and another desktop computer connected wirelessly.
The issue is that my main computer will seem to lose its Internet connection randomly for 15 minutes and then come back by itself.
The problem is hard to describe but I'll try:
Let's say everything is working fine, I go on www.someforum.com/forums and browse around then I go to www.bestbuy.com and click a few links.
Then the issue starts, I get a "Cannot find server" to sites I haven't visited yet in this session like Google or eBay. I can't ping them either. However, if I go to Best Buy or here, it still works fine. I can still browse the forums. So, it seems like somehow, if the connection is "cached," everything still works but I can't make new connections.
Also, during that 15 minutes when my hardwired desktop has the problem, my 2 other computers work fine over wireless.
I can access my router at 192.168.1.1 at all times.

Using the 2 procedures that you noted (answer ID 688 and 534) will get you port forwarding to a computer at a fixed LAN IP address behind your router.  This means that your desktop computer would have a fixed LAN IP address that is set in the computer itself, and not assigned by the router's DHCP server.  It sounds like the DHCP server is giving addresses to your other computers.
It is important to know what fixed LAN IP address you have assigned your desktop computer.  The reason for this is that Linksys has specific rules about assigning fixed LAN IP addresses, and if you don't follow those rules, you can get problems like the one you originally described.  That is the reason that I have pursued this question.
When you assign a fixed LAN IP address, it must follow these rules:
    1)  Any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range, which is typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149
    2)  The fixed LAN IP address must be consistant with the default gateway address, that is it must typically be in the form of 192.168.1.x
    3)  The "x" in item 2 cannot be equal to 1 or 255
So typically, a fixed LAN IP address must be in the range of:
    192.168.1.2     thru 192.168.1.99   or
    192.168.1.150 thru 192.168.1.254
assuming that you did not change your default DHCP server range.
So for example, if you assigned your desktop computer an address of 192.168.1.101, this could be the cause for your problem.  So what address did you assign to your desktop computer when you used the Answer ID 534 procedure?

  • E1500 -intermittent connection

I have been using this router for about 9 months now and it was great in the beginning. About 3 months back I started experiencing intermittent connection issues with the wireless connection. It slowly degraded over the next few months to the point that the wireless signal can only be obtained about 50% of the time and when connected the speed is all but non-existent. At this point I am forced to use a wired connection to ensure that I have a stable connection. I am so annoyed I am going to hard wire my whole house and switch the router to b/g only for when guests are over to make use of the limited functionality of this router (that is provided that what has been said in other reviews actually works). I can assure Linksys/Cisco of one thing however, this was my first and last purchase of their products.

First of all please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E4200) speaks an entirely different language than 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E4200 for example, they are not optimized to work with it. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G... So in those cases the old router will show a stronger signal than the new one.
SECOND, make sure the adapter driver is up to date.
Try to do the following steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.

  • DNS errors + Intermittent Connectivity Help

For the last 5 days my internet has had intermittent connectivity. It is throughout my entire home network of internet access. We have not had any storms or changes to our settings or connections for it to be anything on our network. This issue also happened in the past. Then after X amount of days, it was magically be fixed. When the internet does work, there are no issues and it works fine, which again makes me think it is not on our end and it is Verizon's fault.
When I check the system log of my modem, it has a TON of "DNS request timeouts" or errors saying some other stuff about DNS issues.
My modem/router is Actiontec GT704-WG, I also don't use Wireless internet which is usually related to intermittent connections but that shouldn't be the case.
So is this an issue with Verizon's lines/ servers / connections? Or is it actually something wrong with my network?

It is probably a network issue, but the first step is usually to rule out the local equipment, so restarting the PC and the modem/router is a good starting point.
I have yet to come to encounter an ISP that competently manages their DNS equipment, and you will find a number of Verizon Techs who post here who will tell you to change from the Verizon automatically assigned DNS's to Open DNS.
visit www.opendns.com for detail instructions on how to do so. I changed to open DNS months ago.
So if you still have a problem after you have rebooted the equipment, and changed to OpenDNS, it is almost certainly a Verizon network issue, although convincing Verizon of that can be quite challenging.
    Good luck

  • Intermittent connection since FF7

Since FF7 was released, i get really intermittent connection to the browser. That is to say, for instance, a movie stream will abruptly terminate or websites will stop loading altogether. For instance, at random intervals, i'll try to go to google.com and it'll say "connecting" as if im not connected to the internet. But I try in IE and it works just fine. Then I restart the browser by closing all windows and all is well again. What is the issue?
    Using Win 7.

I have had that problem ever since 6 came out, 7 did not fix it. So I went back to 5. The moment I went back it was all fixed. I thought it was me, I thought it was my isp. But everything else would work fine, it was JUST Firefox 6 & 7. Take it back to 5. I was lucky enough to still have it stored. You will find it goes away. They need to fix the issue.
