WRT54G IP addressing....

Hi,
We have a DSL Internet connection and the TCP/IP configuration from the DSL modem hands out IP addresses via DHCP as 192.168.1.x
This appears to be a problem for the Router as the device is also set to the 192.168.1.x subnet as well.
The only way I can get a working Internet connection is to plug the Cat 5 cable from the DSL modem into one of the switch ports as opposed to the uplink port as it should be.  But then I cannot access the Router UI at 192.168.1.1 (reconfigured Router not to hand out DHCP addresses so clients receive IP address from DSL modem).
Anyway, I thought there must be others who ran into the same issue and I am wondering how you got around it or if you can point me to a solution.
Thanks!

Disconnect your modem and router.  Login to WRT54G and change the "Local IP address" to 192.168.1.2  (assuming that you are not using this address elsewhere in your system, and assuming that this address will be recognized by your modem as a fixed LAN IP address).  Leave the DHCP server turned off in the WRT54G. Power down your system.  Connect modem to any of the four numbered LAN ports on the WRT54G.   Do not connect anything to the Internet port on the WRT54G.   Power up your system.
With this setup, your modem (it's actually a modem-router) will control most of your router settings (firewall, DHCP server, port forwarding, etc.).  Your WRT54G will only control your wireless settings.  You will be able to reach your WRT54G at the 192.168.1.2  address.

  • WRT54G IP Address conflict...

After 3 sessions with Linksys live chat I have done everything suggested and nothing has worked. Here is the situation:
the router(WRT54G v.3 firmware 4.21.1) is working. I can connect to the internet through the router with my notebook(Windows XP Home SP2) using both wired and wireless connection. IP Addresses are:
    wireless -- 192.168.1.101
    wired -- 192.168.1.102
I can connect to the internet through the router with a second desktop (Windows XP Home SP2) using wired connection. IP Address is:
    wired -- 192.168.1.103
I can NOT connect to the internet through the router using my primary desktop(Windows Vista Home Premium SP1). What I have discovered by checking the windows event log, is this:
The system detected an address conflict for IP address 75:65:84:74 with the system having network hardware address 00-13-10-94-A3-17. Network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result.
Here is the result of ipconfig /all: (with router OUT of the system)

The router does NOT have a working internet connection when connected to that particular pc.
SO... how do I fix this conflict with IP Addresses? All of the resetting & powering off & on & etc.... hasn't changed anything.

  • WRT54GS - MAC Address Filter & Firewall SPI

    Hi,
I just purchased a WRT54GS V 6 wireless router.  I updated the firmware to the latest (May 30) and the set up seems to be OK.  Using the security recommendations in the manual as a guide, I implemented them - the turn off SSID, and the others.
IF I try to filter the MAC addresses (accept only those on the list) for my wife's Sony VAIO VGN - S260 laptop, it can see the network but will not connect. When I turn off the MAC filtering, it is fine.  I used the WPA2 personal encryption, and input the passphrase into both router and computer.
My other issue is the firewall Statefull Packet Inspection (SPI).  On the Security set up screen, firewall tab - I have the four radio button settings that I am supposed to (Block WAN request, filter Multicast, Filter NAT, & Filter IDENT), however, I do NOT have the option to turn on the firewall (SPI) above the 4 radio buttons - that setting is totally missing from the set up screen.  Reference Page 28 of the manual.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions, as I could not find any ideas searching the forum.  Thanks for your help

Hi. Is your Mac mini loaded with the OSX server edition or OSX consumer edition? I am not 100% sure but I think you need a server edition to do that.

  • WRT54G IP Address

I have tried resetting the router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds while plugging in the power adapter and the IP address of 198.162.1.1 which is different from the 192.168.1.1 in the instructions.   Using the 198 address gives a window for user ID and password but upon entering admin for the password the window just keeps reappearing.  The 192 address gives failure to connect to web server.  Can someone recommend what I need to do to return the router to factory default on password?  thanks.

thanks sabretooth, i found the info in the FAQ's.  I had to go into my computer to find the IP address.  Believe it or not the IP address that works is 192.168.15.1.  I finally got it work and all is well.  thanks again.

  • WRT54GS IP ADDRESS PROBLEMS!!!

This seems to be an on going issue with this unit... Ok after messing with this thing for a week now, here is what it comes down to. Every time I shut down my wireless laptop and turn it back on it can't connect to the wireless network. Actually it says connected but assigns the IP address of 169.XXX.XXX.XXX. I have windows managing my wireless. So EVERY time, I have to click on the "repair" button and it then connects and stays connected until I turn it off again. I know this is not normal. I'm running Ver. 7 with the latest Firmware. Also if I set a Static IP on my wireless laptop it connects fine. However this is not an option because I travel. Any suggestions?
(Mod note: Edited for guideline compliance. Thank you.)

The 169 address just means that you did not get a working connection.
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Go to the software controlling your wireless card, to the area called "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ).
Delete all the networks listed there, except for those that you use when you are away from home.  Delete any network named "linksys".  Yes, even delete your own current home network.  Reboot computer.
Go back to "Preferred Networks", now re-enter your home network SSID, encryption method (if any), and key (if any)  then set it to "automatic login" as your preferred network.  To do this, you may need to right click on the network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.
    It should work.

  • Help. WRT54G IP Address issues

Can't get computer to find router. Can't get online through router to get to setup page. Setup disc error message "unable to connect to router......".

If you want to try to use the setup disk again, you must first reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • WRT54G and RV042

Hi, My current office set up is the Linksys RV042 (IP address 192.168.1.1 "PPoE") serves as my main gateway and the Linksys WRT54G (IP address 192.168.1.2 "static configuration") as my wireless access point only. I have observe that when i connect the Linksys WRT54G router my internet connection is slowing down tremendously, (as in its very very slow) but once i disconnected it my connection speed returns to normal. I've already upgraded both with their newest version of firmware. So my question is there a problem connecting this two routers? do they have conflicts or something like that? Thanks in advance

No i do not think that both the router are having any issue .... still you can do one thing ... that check the configuration of RVO42 ... change the MTU size to 1300 ... Click save settings ...

  • Trouble converting WRT54G v6 to access point

I want to use my WRT54G (version 6) as a simple access point - I have another router that connects to the internet and which has a DHCP server.  I read several other threads that said this could be done by 1) changing the WRT54G IP address to, say, 192.168.1.2; 2) disabling the DHCP server; and 3) connecting the WRT54G to my network using one of the LAN ports, not the Internet / WAN port.
I did the above and it's not working.
Home LAN: DSL modem connects to BEFSR81 router in a wiring cabinet in the garage; CAT5e runs from the BEFSR81 to several jacks around the house where I have a desktop PC and a laptop, both running Windows XP.
    What I did:
    1. Take WRT54G fresh out of the box and plug in power.  I.e., factory defaults.
    2. Connect my laptop to the WRT54G with a patch cord, connecting to a LAN port.
    3. Use http://192.168.1.1 to configure the WRT54G:  change IP address to 192.168.1.2; disable DHCP server; disable uPnP.
    4. Disconnect laptop from WRT54G, connect WRT54G to my wired LAN, using a LAN port (not the Internet port).
    5. Using the desktop computer on the LAN observe that http://192.168.1.2 (the WRT54G) is reachable and still has the above configuration, and observe that the desktop can still reach the internet.
    6. Connect the laptop to a second LAN port on the WRT54G, observe that it gets an IP address from the BEFSR81, observe that the laptop can ping 192.168.1.1 (the BEFSR81) and 192.168.1.2 (the WRT54G), and can reach the internet.  Looking good so far!!
    7. Unplug the laptop from the WRT54G and try to connect wirelessly to the WRT54G (using the default SSID of "linksys", no security).  Using the wireless software on the laptop observe the "linksys" SSID appears, so try to connect to it.  Status shows "associated", then sits for a minute or so and gives up, assigning Windows XP's standard bogus client IP address 169.254.85.4, indicating did not get an IP address from DHCP, and wireless connection is no-go.  Repeat several times, and also try "ipconfig /renew", all to no avail.  Laptop can connect wirelessly to another access point using a different SSID, so laptop wireless stuff is known good.
    8. Very sad...  Any advice?

Thanks Cekimball.  I might have a similar problem and would like to ask the same questions.

  • Setting-up the Internet Connection

Hi All, my systems has the following Linksys products:
    modem - ADSL2MUE
    wireless router 1 - WRT54GS (1st floor)
    wireless router 2 - WRT54G (2nd floor)
switch - SR2024 (for cable connections)
I was able to connect all the PC to the internet. My problem is I could not make all the PC be in same Gateway number in which I could not share the network printers and files to all PCs. Is there any way to solve this problem? Below are settings to each device:
    ADSL2MUE - Bridge Mode only
    WRT54G - IP Address (192.168.1.1), PPPoE
    WRT54GS - IP Adress (192.168.2.1), DHCP
    * ADSL2MUE Internet Port is connected to WRT54G Internet port
    * WRT54G Ethernet Port 1 is connected to SR2024 Ethernet Port
    * WRT54GS Internet Port is connected to SR2024 Ethernet Port
    * Printer 1 is connected to SR2024 Ethernet port (2nd floor)
    * Printer 2 is connected to WRT54GS Ethernet Port (1st floor)
    * All PCs in the 1st floor is using 192.168.2.1 gateway number thru WRT54GS wireless connection.
    * All PCs in the 2nd floor is using 192.168.1.1 gateway number thru WRT54G and SR2024.
I need your help on this.
    Best rgds, joven

It does not matter how you set the internet connection type on the second router when nothing connects to the internet port. The internet connection type is used for the configure of the connection through the internet port. As nothing is connected in the internet port the setting is basically inoperable and makes no difference whatever you set there. You should not set a static IP address as that may affect the routing tables on the router even if the internet interface is down. Thus, just leave it on Automatic/DHCP and it should be fine.

  • Connecting a WRT150N (wireless) into a BEFSR41V3 (wired)

I have an existing wired BEFSR41V3 router with 4 used ports.  This router in located in the basement near the modem.
I also have 2 portable computer with wireless cards, and bought a new WRT150N router (wireless).  In order to get the maximum range from the new router, I want to install the WRT150N on the ground floor, where I have 2 wired point.
Can I keep the BEFSR41 as existing and use the 4th point as a bridge been the 2 router?  I would endup with a cascading network:
    Modem connected to BEFSR41
BEFSR41 connected to 3 points and the WRT150N
If I do this I may need to change the IP address of one router to avoid conflicting IP addresses.

I Have Had to do this aswell,
what i did is have my first router(linksys wrt54g) Ip address set to 192.168.2.1
and my second router(linksys wrt150n) IP set to 10.0.2.1
ad it is working fine for me so im guessing this will work fine for you.
    Thanks
    Joshua

  • MacBook Pro can't obtain IP address from Linksys WRT54G v2 router

I believe I am having the issue described in the article below:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304817
In a nutshell, AirPort seems to be seeing the wireless router just fine, but internet connect is a no go.  The router is a Linksys WRT54G v2, which should - SHOULD - work w/ my brand new MBP C2D 17", based on the reports I have seen in other threads here.
In the Network Status tab of the network pref pane, the message is:  "Airport is connected to the network linksys.  Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."  This is in line with the Apple tech doc cited at the link above.
I am starting a new thread on this because, unlike many of the other folks who are having problems connecting wirelessly, my actual wireless connection seems to be rock solid (AirPort connects to the Linksys instantly, and shows up as full strength with no apparent dropouts).  The problem seems to be with the IP address, as the MBP can't/won't pickup anything other than its self assigned IP when connecting.
Here are the things I have tried so far (most of which are probably irrelevant as it turns out, b/c the actual wireless connection has been fine - just not the TCP/IP stuff):
    1. Updated to latest firmware in router.
    2. Tried switching to different wireless channel (ch. 11 in this case, based on reports in other threads).
    3. In Linksys settings, changed beacon interval to 50 and lowered packet thresholds as described in another post (can't find the link right now).
    4. Formatted and re-installed OSX onto the MBP.  Did NOT use Migration Assistant this time (since others were apparently having problems due to out of date prefs and PowerPC related items copied over from older machines).
    5. Updated to latest version of OSX Tiger (10.4.8 with all patches installed) using a wired Ethernet connection to the internet.
    6. Downloaded and installed the AirPort Update patch 2006-002 located at:
     http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportupdate2006002.html
    7. Repeatedly trashed all AirPort-related keychain items and the SystemPreferences folder in Root/Library/Preferences.
    8. Repeatedly trashed and re-created a new wireless location using Network Assistant.
    9. Salaam thrice towards Cupertino, wave rubber chicken and bathe self in pigs' blood while humming a continuous medley of Mac startup chimes from the last two decades.
    Just kidding about #9, mostly.
I am starting a new thread about this because I believe my issue is OS related.  The AirPort hardware seems to have a a full-strength and non-intermittent connection to the Linksys router.  The problem appears to be w/ the (in)ability of OSX to negotiate an IP lease with the Linksys box.
I am posting this to the Linksys forum as well, but do not believe this to be a Linksys issue.  I have two other PowerPC-based Mac laptops in my office, both of which connect flawlessly to the Linksys.  (I'm typing this from one of them.)  In fact, I have torture tested my new MBP with several other wireless routers with the same result - MBP will not connect, while both of the PowerBooks work like a charm with the other routers in question.  Therefore, it surely seems to me like the common denominator here is definitely the MBP and not the router.  I realize that in the support doc at the top of this post, Apple claims it is the responsibility of the router manufacturer, but I just cannot buy that line - based on the fact that EVERY OTHER LAPTOP that I own works great with the Linksys except for my shiny new MBP.
Beautiful machine otherwise and I really can't wait to get it working, but this is a SERIOUS pain in the you know what.
At any rate, if anyone has any ideas as to what to try next, I would love to hear about it.  I will be calling AppleCare again first thing tomorrow morning, but it always seems the users are better informed than the Apple guys.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

if other computers connect to the router just fine , doesn't seem to me a router problem then .. the only thing i can think is to try connecting to a different network and see whether it does any good to u...can't help much if it's an OS related issue...

  • WRT54G: Static mode set on WAN side, but still sometimes pulls address via DHCP!

We've had (6) WRT54G (v5) installed in a building, for about (2) years now, with no previous problems. Now, ALL of them are doing something weird.  They are all set for Static mode on the WAN side (we have static ip addresses for these), yet every now and then they will spontaneously pull an address via DHCP on their own.  When they do this, the setting itself doesn't change.  It will still show "STATIC" in the pull down list.  But, the address will no longer be the address we assigned to the unit, and will instead appear to be an address that it pulled via DHCP.
Thanks, in advance, for any help and insight into this strange problem.
    David

Ah.  In that case, we're not going to put our client through the frustration of chasing a ghost in the machine.  We'll just replace them with new ones.  But, I'll try this on them in my spare time and let you know how it goes.
    Thanks for your assistance,
    David

  • WRT54G router IP address is the same as my modem's IP address. how to change the routers IP address?

The broadband modem got broken and the ISP changed it to a new modem. Now my problem is I cannot use the router when they changed the modem. The ISP won't provide support since they didn't provide me with the wireless router. I've read through the forum and found that I had to change my router's IP address. WRT54G router IP address is the same as my modem's IP address, 192.168.1.1. I already changed the local IP address of the router to 192.168.1.2, saved the setting, released and renew the ip address. Now, when I connected my internet modem cable to the router, I cannot connect to the internet. I am able to ping 192.168.1.2 but I cannot connect to the ping 192.168.1.1. Please help me do the proper setup.
    Thanks!

Hello! I solved my problem but I find the solution so weird. After changing the routers IP address to 192.168.1.2, instead of plugging the modem cable on the Internet port of the router, I plugged it in one of the WAN ports. Presto, it worked. Even my wireless connection is also working.

  • IP addresses assigned by WRT54G

Can I configure the WRT54G router not to refresh the IP addresses?

Do you mean that you do not want the IP addresses on the devices on your LAN to change?
Which model of WTR54G are you using?
You could just configure all the PCs with static IPs......
Tomato 1.25vpn3.4 (SgtPepperKSU MOD) on a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54
    D-Link DSM-320 (Wired)
Wii (Wireless) - PS3 (Wired), PSP (Wireless) - XBox360 (Wired)
    SonyBDP-S360 (Wired)
