WRT54G just stops... frequently.

This past week, my WRT54G v5 has simply been giving me endless grief. It seems that the router just stops working several times a day. As yet I can track no specific cause of the problem. I lose Internet, and when I ping the router (192.168.1.1) I receive the message "Host is down". It seems more frequent that the router dies when I'm using a laptop with wireless access, but this is not always the case (sometimes it's just down when I wake up in the morning). Modifying MTU size doesn't seem to help, nor does altering the broadcast frequency.
Here's the network layout:
ISP is Comcast (Cable) feeding into the router off of a Motorola Surfboard 5100. The service and modem are both fine: if I connect the PC directly to the modem, all is well. The all four of the router's LAN ports are claimed: an iMac G5, a Vonage device, and two old Linux machines. Feeding off the WAN are a TiVo, and occasionally two laptops: an iBook G4 and another old Linux machine running Ubuntu. This little network was functioning quite well for the past 9 months, until recently, and I've changed nothing lately.
Anyone have experience with this situation?

I am having the exact same problem as you. I am using a WRT54GS v6. Everything has run fine for about 2 months but lately the router seems to lose its internet connection. When it happens all the lights are still on however I am unable to ping the router. Everything returns to normal after I unplug the router and plug it back in. I have not made any changes to the router since I started using it and this has started happening just recently.
I have tried upgrading to the latest firmware and it did not help. I am using comcast internet and I used a wired connection on the router most of the time and occasionally use wireless with my laptop. TIVO also has a wireless connection that goes through this. Due to the fact that it has worked perfectly fine for two months and now does this atleast a couple times a week I am thinking it is some kind of hardware malfunction. Through the many searches I have done I have found that this is a extremely common problem and no solution has been found yet.
You can go to this other thread and see that these guys are having the same problem. I will think twice before buying another linksys product thats for sure.

    I am sitting here with My boss's WRT54G V.8 which won't connect to either his Comcast service or my 15mbps FIOS Actiontec after 90 days light use in his home. The router shows 0.0.0.0 as the gateway and 192.168.1.1 as the only DNS. I have had other versions of the WRT54G connected successfully to my Actiontec as well as countless home installs for friends and clients. I am not a noob. I manage the PC Division of an electronics firm in Philadelphia and have advanced networking skills. It appears the V.8 has some problems, at least a batch of them with 3 reports in the same time frame. DSLReports has no info on V.8 yet so this is the only source reporting problems. I suggest you get on the phone with Linksys Monday and start the RMA process.

  • WRT54G - wireless just stopped working on all devices

    Hi All,
    I've had my WRT54G for a couple of years and have my Desktop hard wired (to the router) and 2 laptops and an ipod connecting wirelessly succefully for the past 2 years.Woke up this morning and nothing will connect wirelessly,finding the router is intermitent and when it does it cannot establish a connection with it. I can connect the devices via the network cable directly to the router and all works fine, it's just wireless that has suddenly stopped working.
    I have tried 'turning it off and on again" turning WEP off, changing WEP password etc. but nothing seems to work. Im at a loss as to why my entire wireless network/connection has just stopped working?
    Any ideas?

    I'm having a similar problem. This past month or so, the router just kicks my wireless computers off the network. Then I can't find the network at all. My work around has been to go into the wireless setting (via my hard-wired computer) and change the wireless channel from 9 to 11 or vice versa. This keeps the network connected for a day or two and then kicks us off again until I change the channel.
    I've looked into the solution previously posted of upgrading the Firmware but I'm having a difficult time doing so. I'm on a Mac and the firmware downloads seem to be for PC. The other problem I'm having is that my model is WRT54GS (no version number). Should I assume this is version 1.0? I think so. Anyway, like I said, when I download the firmware for that unit, it shows up as a bin file (WRT54GSv3_4.71.4.001_fw,3.bin). I then expand it and it becomes a cpgz file (WRT54GSv3_4.71.4.001_fw,3.bin.cpgz). And back and forth, over and over again.
    How can I upgrade my firmware on my Mac?

  • WRT54G v6 stopped seeing wireless networks

    My laptop - windows xp - reports there are no wireless networks available, yet my 2nd laptop connects via wireless just fine and if I plug in an ethernet to my laptop that has issues with wireless, it works just fine too.  My laptop was seeing my wireless network previously and just stopped working.  I have done all the resets of router, modem and rebooting of my laptop.  I am using WRT54G v6.  Pulling up networking and clicking repair still shows no wireless networks available.  Going to Hardware and devices, it shows the wireless network card driver is ok.  I have also deleted the driver and let windows detect it and install on reboot, but still the same problem
    Has anyone else seen this issue.     

    Its possible that, your wireless network card utility software is controlling/managing the network, You can go to the utility,  Scan the SSID and connect, It will connect the wireless network and should work.

    Here is the full story. It may be long so please bear with me. I take a lot of pictures and movies. Since I have over 30,000 pictures I decided to place the Iphoto library on an external drive to save space on my internal drive since ot was getting very full. After I did that it worked fine for a while. Then one day I could not open the Iphoto library. Since I was overseas at the time I brought it to the IStudio ( not an Istore) overseas. They said to rebuild the library and they would do that for me. It took all day since I had so many pictures. When they called me and told me it was ready, I went to pick it up. They started to show me the new library. It crashed again. Not knowing how to fix this at the ISudio, they installed Aperture and imported the Iphoto library. This worked fine for a short time.When back in the states, it crashed again just like Iphoto. I took it to the IStore. They did not know why the overseas Istudio did what they did what they did  and rebuilt my aperture library. Again it worked fine. Now that I am overseas again. It crashed again. However, I concluded that the reason for these crashes is becuase I have the file on an external drive that derives its power from the Mac and not by itself. When I use it and stop for a while the MAC will go to sleep and this cuases the external drive to shut down. This then causes the library to have inconsistancies. Therefore, when it happened this time I tried to repair the library and after 36 hours it would close down Aperture. Therefore I decided to rebuild the library. That did not work either. So I tried opening the Aperture library with Iphoto. That seemed like it was going to work but after importing half of the 30,000 plus pictures. I photo shut down. I then made a new aperture libary and erged the old library with it. This worked. I now have an aperture library that works. However, when I plug my camera into the MAC nothing happens. The camera does not show up in devices in either Aperture, I photo nor in Finder. The USB port and cord I use works fine becuase I can read my external hard drives fine. I checked as SIG suggested in this thread and everything is set to open aperture when the camera is connected.
    I have the newest OS version 10. 7. 2 and the computer frequently updates all my programs. I have not installed any ne software lately. The problem happens both if I am on battery or plugged in. Just before I came overseas the IStore replaced the Battery.   I can go back to the IStudio  here overseas but the last time I was there and told them about the problem ( I did not have my computer with me) they did not impress me with their wisdom. I will be back in that city in a month and can go there if need be.  Thanks for all the help so far. God bless.

  • Playlist on shuffle & repeat just stops.

    I have an iPod Touch, and lately whenever i play a playlist (which is always set on shuffle & repeat) it will play a couple of songs off the playlist and then just stop.  When I push play (either from the remote on my earbuds or from punching the home-button twice) it will start playing my entire library on shuffle.  This is happening more and more frequently and it's really starting to scare me.  Restarting my iPod doesn't work.  I've tried twice with no effect.  I'm nervous to restore to a backup because my computer doesn't have all of my music on it and i'm worried about losing some albums.   Is there another option I'm not seeing?

    Same here....  just recently started.  I play my music sometimes non-stop for hours at a time, connected to a Bose system.  Sometimes it stops & goes back to the home screen, sometimes to the apple - which is frustrating, but do-able.  But lately the lack of repeat, even though the repeat icon is properly lit, it doesn't repeat.  I posted another query today, not having seen yours before.  Maybe someone can help!  I've recently done the whole reset thing - will probably try that again...  good luck!

    iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Accounts ->
    Delete and recreate your email settings.
    It's only difficult if you get all emotional over tiny things and don't stop to look for answers first. I find Macs very simple to use.

    Unless you have a copy of the iPod backup file from the previous computer installation you are out of luck. If yo have that file move it to your computer and restore the iPod from that backup.  Otherwise, you will have to restore the iPod to factoery defaults/new iPod and lose all your app date. That is the way it is since the iPod sees the computer as a new computer/iTunes library.  That backup file is located:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

    it is an itouch, i buy apps from the app store, they are purchased, they show up in my app section but when i try to sync them to my itouch they do not show up in on the itouch. i have tried to atuthorize and deauthorize the computer also few times, rebooted computer and still nothing. when i restore the firmware and have everything reinstall all over again the apps music and such, all show up. however if i buy a new app and try to sync it with the itouch it does not show up despite the fact that the computer states 'installing "......" whatever app. it happens with numerous apps, there is no rhyme and reason to why certain apps just do not show up on the itouch. the authorize/deauthorize deal does nothing to rectify the situtaion. any other ideas ?

    So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”.     Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
    #1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
    Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
    Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
    Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
    Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
    Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
    Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
    #4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
    When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
    If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    Try the stamdard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

    Close All Open Apps...  Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
    Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
