WRT54G locks up when enabling wireless network

So I have the WRT54G Ver. 6 latest firmware, just installed the firmware(1.02.2)  The problem is when I go to enable the wireless network the router locks up and I cant access the router again until I power cycle it.  I have waited about 20 minutes to see if it was rebooting itself but still nothing came up and I still couldnt access the router, or interenet.  After power cycling the wireless is still disabled.
The steps I am taking is I log into the router, go to the wireless basic settings, select enable from the drop down menu.  I have tried changing the SSID and leaving the default.  I have tried selecting different channels and using the default and I have tried enabling and disabling SSID Broadcast.  But all end up with the same result.   I thought I would try here before calling tech support to see if anyone else had this problem.
The router is only a couple months old and when I first bought it the wireless was enabled, I just disabled it because we werent using it back then.

ya the easy setup button wouldnt work either.  I just reset the router via the handy reset button on the back and that did the trick.  Everything is working as it should now.

  • WRT54G v6 - Can Connect to wireless network but can't access internet

Ok, this is my last resort for help. I spent two hours yesterday with linksys "chat" support to no avail.
    First the techincal details:
OS for all machines = Windows XP
Laptop w/two adapters - one wired, one wireless
    WRT54G v6 upgraded with 1.00.9 firmware
    SpeedStream modem from DSL provider
I have manually set the IP, subnet mask, gateway, primary and secondary DNS for my wireless adapter (using the Alternate Configuration in the Internet Protocol Properties of the Wireless Network Connection). When I connect to the wireless network I see that the IP, subnet, gateway and DNS server IPs are all correct (via ipconfig /all).  I see that I am connected to my SSID (11.0 MBps, signal strength Excellent) however I can't access web sites (the server not found message appears in the browser) nor can I ping the router IP or any other IP (LAN or WAN).
My wired PC works fine with this router. My laptop works fine with this router when wired.
Anyone face a similar situation and have a solution?  Thanks.

    A new discovery...
When I disable the wireless security on the router, I am able to connect to the wireless network, ping the router and access the internet.  So, there is apparently something wrong with the WEP security (although I am able to connect to the wireless network when WEP is enabled).
I am thouroughly confused. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Can not enable Wireless network Connection

    Hello
I am trying to set up my wireless connection but when I go in to my control panel/network connections and right click and enable wireless connection, it just goes back to enable. Do you know what I can do to enable it.
    Many Thanks

    Hi Paulm,
can you please tell us which notebook and OS you own because some notebooks only are Wifi prepared with antenna and no Mini PCI Wifi card.
Also you can check in the Device Manager if your Wifi card is detected in a right way! If yes there is also a option to enable or disable the card.
Please don`t forget that FN+F8 key combination allows also enable/disable option.
    Tom

  • Why am I using data plan when on wireless network?

Why am I showing a use of data when I've only accessed via my wireless network and have not enabled any background activities.

Visual voicemail uses cellular data, not wi-fi.
Wi-fi is also turned off and cellular data takes over after some period with the iphone asleep.

  • Slower internet connection when connection wireless network

Currently using a Linksys WRT54GL wireless broadband (firmware v4.30.5) router in conjunction with a Thomson Speedtouch 546i ADSL router (ISP provided).
My problem is that when I connect to the internet over the wireless network I experience a much slower internet connection in comparison with when I use a tp-cable.
Tested with various online "speed-tests" (I know they are not to be trusted, but they do give a basis for comparison):
    Over wireless network : ca.6000kbits/sec.
Direct cable from pc to router (tested on both routers):12-13000kbits/sec.
Hope anyone has any idea what the problem may be, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Change the beacon to 50 ....and reduce the RTS and the fragmentation by 40 each.....these options are found under the advanced wireless settings...
Also make sure that u have the latest drivers installed for the Wireless NIC.

  • Kernel panic when enabling wireless

Since the kernel update this weekend (3.9.2-1), I encounter a kernel panic (pictured here) within a few seconds of enabling wireless.  This is on a Dell Inspiron N5010, which has a Broadcom wireless card.
Is this an Arch-centric issue, or should I report this panic somewhere else next? A cursory search doesn't seem to find other mentions of it online.

  • Officejet Pro L7780 locks up when connected wirelessly

I'm trying to set up my iPad to print to an Officejet Pro L7780. Prior to beginning this effort, we were able to print to this computer through an ethernet connection no problems.
However the printer won't function once it connects wirelessly - locks up entirely. Can't get iPad, PC w/Vista, or a PC with XP to recognize the printer on the wi-fi network. And, printer button functionality is gone, including the power button. Any suggestions?

    Hello gathey,
You can click the links below for two documents dealing with wireless network issues for your printer.

I will remind you that your printer can be hardwired to your network and the iOS device be wireless, as long as it is the same network.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!

  • Adding Airport Express to an existing Windows WEP enabled wireless network

I have can't find anything to help me add my new Airport Express to my existing WEP network. All I want is to use to play my Itunes through the sitting room stereo. I've upgraded the firmware on my Netgear 802.11b wireless access point so I can have a 13 digit WEP password. I've installed the latest install software from the apple website for the express box.
I can access the express box fine on its own but not add it to the existing network. Now the only thing that works is the apple connection! My old wireless network has stopped working. I tried the same at my office yesterday and the only way to resolve the situation was to uninstall all the Apple software and then my Wireless network was able to work again. I'm pulling my hair out here and getting in to trouble with the rest of the family because it is taking so much time up!
Someone mentioned somewhere some new firmware - I can only find one for MAcs not PCs - I don't have any Macs on my network.
    Please help.
    THANKS

Make sure you have installed at least Airport 4.1 on your PC:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41forwindows.html
Most Netgear wireless routes will tell you the hex equivalent of the plain text WEP password you enter into it - and this is found using the same web browser based process you use to configure the router. This information cannot be found by any other means (like "pinging" the router's IP address). If you can get the WEP key in this manner, configure the Airport Express with the same WEP key *while it is still cabled to the router*.
The alternative is to come up with a 26-digit hex format WEP key of your own choosing. You can then wirelessly access the Airport Express and enter that WEP key on it first, followed by doing the same on the router second.

  • Syncing apps suddenly disabled when enabling wireless sync?

I have been using the same computer to sync to my iPhone for over a year. I enabled wireless sync, and now "Sync Apps" is unchecked, and if I try to sync apps, it gives me the warning that all data on my iPhone will be replaced. What's going on?

iTunes is establishing a new connection. The data will be replaced by the same data. You have nothing to fear

  • WIPS needed when connecting wireless networks to Firewall ?

    Hi all,
We 're considering to implement a wireless network.
One of the security options is using wIPS.
This will cost of course because it needs a mobile security engine and licences for the APs (and WCS).
Another option I see to avoid this cost is by connecting the wireless network to the external firewall. See attachment.
Then a wireless session wil continue to Internet or towards the corporate network.
This firewall will also have an IDS/IPS module.
Is this a viable and effective alternative or am I totally bezirk?
Is wIPS better because of wireless specific issues/challenges?
    Thanx for any help.
    Greetz Jaap

They're unrelated. The Wips features done by the MSE appliance have nothing to do with what a firewall does. The MSE will check all the information on all the APs to find out possibilities of wireless attacks. For example, authentication floods, denial of service, AP impersonation, ... There are hundreds of different signatures.
Wireless management frames never reach the firewall, only useful data payload does. A firewall will never see if a client is spoofing an AP mac address, if a client is sending "disassociation" frames to all the other clients and so on.

  • Wrt54gs router v.5 - my wireless network disappeared

Had a wireless network for a year, and yesterday it was no longer broadcasting.  It does not appear on the available wireless network screen.  Tried to access the router, and cannot do that either.  I am clueless what happened and what to do about it.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Have you done a recent firmware upgrade or anything? I had the same issue, and once I reset the router to factory defaults, the SSID that the router was broadcasting was an unsecured Linksys network. Go into the router settings by typing 192.168.1.1 and find the wirless settings. Look under SSID and see what it says. Change it back to your original network name and secure it.
    Hope it helps.....Rick

  • WRT54G router locks up when connecting wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player

My WRT54G  router locks up 100% of the time when attempting to connect connect wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player (Model number BD-P3600). I can connect to it with a cable no problem, but when I attempt to do so wirelessly and type in the password on the Blue Ray player, it attempts to connect but the router locks up and all devices connected to it (wired or wirless) lose connectivity. Any ideas?

    Try the following steps:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.
    # Then Click on wireless Tab select Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, and 11. Click Save Settings.
#Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 50
~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304
    Then check the connectivity status..

  • Finder locks up when there is network traffic

Mac Mini Intel Core Dual 2007
    OSX 10.4.8
Recently i had an issue where a Mac Mini 2007 (first Intel Mini) which worked perfectly for years didn't boot anymore.
I checked ran a check of the harddisk using Disk Utility and it turned out that both boot records, the main partition and the Recovery partition were corrupt.
I was able to boot from an external disk and save my data, so i was lucky.
I replaced the harddrive and tried to install OSX from the DVD only to find out that after appx 1 minute into the install the Finder would stop working. Spinning beachball.
Maybe this drive was also bad, so i replaced the drive again with yet another harddisk. Same situation.
So maybe something happened to the memory, maybe when a certain spot on the memory gets used the Finder stops. So i replaced the memory as well. Same situation.
What else can i swap out? Video is on board, so i decided to remove the Wifi card, just as a test. Then the installer runs correctly and the Mini works as expected. I was able to reinstall OSX and since i don't use Wifi, and assuming the Wifi adapter was at fault, i left the Wifi card out and reinstalled OSX.
That was in my lab. But when i moved the Mini to its place and hooked up the ethernet cable again i got the same symptom. After appx.1 minute Finder stops.
When i boot the Mini without the ethernet cable it boots ok. When i connect the ethernet cable i get the same symptom as when i had the Wifi adapter in the Mini, after 1 minute Finder stops.
The ethernet adapter is working because when i configure an IP address that is already on the network i get an error message. This can only happen if the adapter is able to listen on the cable.
I reset the PRAM, tried Safe boot all with the same result.
Any idea what might have happened here?
    Thanks,
    Ton.

  • Airport Utility Crashes when extending wireless network

Hi. I have an AirPort Extreme which generates my wi fi network set up in bridge mode as it is connected via Ethernet cable to my Sky hub. I have an airport express I am trying to set up to extend the range but when I use Airport Utility to configure it it gets to "reading base station settings" and then crashes. Airport Utility on my windows PC can't even see the Airport Express. I have tried a hard reset on both the extreme and the express but no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks!

As a last resort, try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer to the WAN port on the AirPort Express and see if AirPort Utility can configure the Express that way.
If it can, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the Express is operating correctly.
If still no luck, the Express is very likely defective. Please take it to an Apple Store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly for further assistance.

  • Utilizing a WPA Wireless network

I have a WRT54G wireless router and everything works fine except for one thing. I was in the process of enabling a WPA Personal security-enabled wireless network. I am using the TKIP algorithm and typed in the WPA network key onto my laptop when I tried to connect to the wireless network. It accepts the network key just fine, but when my wireless card on my laptop attempts to acquire a network address from the router, it is unable to do so. It just indefinitely retries and I can never get a connection to my wireless router. I was wondering if I need to alter the settings on my wireless card on my laptop or I need to alter the settings on my wireless router through my desktop. If anyone has a clue as to how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate your advice.

In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off the software firewall, and see if that helps.
