Wrt54g lost setup

Today my PC lost the setup for my WRT54G router. It just disappeared. When I open the advisor it wants me to set up the router as if it never was set up. Somehow I am still able to connect wireless and so does my laptop. Any body know what could have happened and should I set it up again or wait and see if it magically reappears.

Reset the router after disconnecting it from modem ....
Check the Ip address ..... if getting a valid one .... try to pnig the gateway address ....
let  me know how it works ...

  • WRT54G lost wifi

Hi, My WRT54G lost the wifi connection. I can get the internet if I connect the cable from my modem to my computer but my wireless connection is gone. So it's an issue with the router or settings. I called Linksys and was told the settings would have to be reset/upated. I was told there would e a fee. I did not want to pay a fee. I'd like to try to resolve myself. Technician suggested I search the forums.
Is this something I can fix myself? If so, how? I have a Mac laptop. Verizon ISP.
    Thank you.

To reset, you would need to press and hold the reset button for about 30 seconds. Then set it up again. Try these links for help:

  • Wrt54g lost settings and wireless not detected

    Hello,
I recently had a problem with my wrt54g so i popped in the installation cd and went through the basic setup again.  Now my wired desktop works perfectly but none of my wireless devices are finding the router.  I also went into the config webpage and noticed all my settings had been reset.  All my port forwarding for the PS3 and XBox 360 had disappeared!!!  I couldn't believe it since it took me forever to get the initial settings to work right.
Now my laptop, ps3, xbox360 all cannot detect the the router.  However, the wired desktop pc works fine.  Is there any way to recover lost settings and how do I get the router to be detected by my wireless devices?

I think your router got resetted and that is why you lost all the settings on the router...Change the wireless settings on the router(ssid , channel , wep)...Click here to change the Wireless Settings on the router...Also check the related articles in the given link...

  • Can WRT54G be setup as a Wireless Access Point?

Does anyone know how to setup a router (WRT54G) to connect to other routers using a wireless connection and function as either a wireless access point or another router using the main router for it's internet and network connection?

you cannot get  the WRT to connect wireless to any device as it is an access point.
However this same thing will work wired. All you need to do is change the LAN ip of the WRT to 192.168.1.50 from 192.168.1.1 and disable the DHCP on the WRT.
Connect both devices LAN to LAN , do not use the internet port of the WRT.

  • Please help!!! WRT54G lost after a reboot

I have 2 laptops and both have always been hooked to my wireless network in my house. I had a system crash and I had to reboot windows xp home (teenage son found out about the Trojan virus the hard way) and now I cant seem to get my computer to find my wrt54g that my wifes laptop is on right now. So the network is still fine but apparently my router and windows are having problems. It was saying it was connected but with limited or no connectivity even though it had a full signal at first but then I tried to use the linksys instructions as per the technician but now It wont do that anymore.
I followed the instructions and went to the dos prompt and typed ipconfig/release because I had a 169.xxx.x.x address but it wont renew because I have no connection it says. Technician wont talk to me without the $39.00 fee and I dont have a local computer guy.
Can anyone please walk me through how to get reconnected?

You are getting the ip address of 169.254.x.x as the computer is not connected to the network.Connect the computer to the router...Open the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar..Under the Wireless tab, change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz..If the SSID(Network Name) is "linksys" then, change it to some unique name.Under the Wireless Security subtab, Check the Security Key..If you are using WEP then, note down the Key1 as the network key.
On the computer, remove the preferred network and then, try to connect the Wireless Network...  Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties.
Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names present in the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...It will connect...

  • WRT54GS router setup page won't display most text

So I bought a new Linksys WRT54GS v6 wireless router yesterday, and I was able to set it up to share my DSL line, but when I went to the router setup page (192.168.1.1), it wouldn't display most text. It displays text in the entry boxes, but there are no links or other text on the page. I took a screenshot which can be seen here: http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3390/routersetuppagemc1.jpg
Does anyone know what I can do to solve this issue?

Hey Merugo. I was having the same problem with the router settings screen refusing to load for my WRT54G. Do you happen to have v.5 of the router? After digging around in the help files on the site, I found this for firmware recovery for the WRT54G v.5 and it fixed the problem I was having once it loaded the updated .bin. Blank screen be gone.
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3176
(The first time the router tried to load the new .bin it timed out. And the second time it installed correctly though it didn't display "Upgrade Success" like it's apparently supposed to.)
Hope this can maybe help you since it fixed things for me.Message Edited by Res on 10-03-200606:44 PM

  • WRT54G - Lost Settings

I have had my WRT54G running my home-office network successfully, for 14 months - 2 wired desktops (1 on XP and 1 on Vista) and 1 wireless laptop on Vista.  A couple of days' ago, I went into my Linksys software to retrieve my "router password" so I could temporarily  hookup a guest's wireless laptop.  To my surprise, I was greeted with a "setup" window, and the following happened when I attempted to redo the setup (by the way, when I started to redo the setup, all 3 of my computers, including my wireless laptop, were still networked together, as well as able to be on line!): The setup made me redo my password, and then when attempting to "find" the router, named the router on the right side of the window and stating that "Network Status" was OK, but in the "tree" - it had (still has)  the yellow warning triangle, along with a "No Router" message under the grayed out router icon.  In the tree, under "Other Devices" - I get "No Devices", and "Computers" - "No Computers."
Since this new "setup," I do not have access to networking between my 3 computers, as well as my (wireless) laptop not being able to go on line.  However, my wired desktops are still on line, but not able to network between them.
HELP Please!  Do I need to delete my Linksys software and start over? - or, is there possibly something wrong with my Linksys router?  By the way, I am connected through a Cisco 678 DSL Modem.

Thanks Binky!  Both of the desktop PC's are in the correct local IP address range, and I know what the laptop should be, but of course, it won't show because it's not connecting to the network or to the internet.  Ping on my XP desktop (which is the host computer) checks out, but Ping on the other desktop (pinging itself), gets a "general failure", which I'm guessing is (even though it's on line) because it can't connect to the "home network."
We still need to go back to what I believe is the original problem, and that is the fact that the router is still not totally recognized (see my note regarding the "grayed out" tree, saying "No Router).  I believe that our desktops are on line only because the connection is passing from the Cisco 678 DSL modem THROUGH the Linksys Router, and if I hard-wired my laptop to the router, it would be on line also (but, still not networked)!  So... my question still is... do I need to disconnect everything, uninstall the Linksys software and start over... or can I reinstall over the top of the existint software... or do we think my Router actually is defective?
The 3rd option seems weird to me (defective Linksys), considering until I discovered it wanted me to redo the setup, all 3 computers were networking successfully together and on line, including my laptop on a wireless connection.

  • WRT54G Router Setup Help!!!

Hey guys.  I have a WRT54G router.  I have AT&T yahoo DSL and a modem that came with it.  Whats going on is that I bought a new Dell inspiron laptop computer with a 802.11g wireless card. I bought the router so I can create a wireless network.
When I connect the ethernet cable from the MODEM to my LAPTOP i can access the internet just fine when I click on internet explorer.
When I connect the router to the ethernet cable and try to setup the wireless network nothing happens and it won't finish the install from the LinkSYS CD I installed. I even tried to make it into a wired network.
(MODEM ----CABLE --ROUTER--CABLE---LAPTOP) but I couldn't setup up the internet at all either.
I click on the network connections(on my VISTAPC) and I can see the greens bars lit up on the LYNKSYS network and can't seem to connect to it.
when I take the cable from the router and put it straight into my laptop without my router the internet works just fine.  Help! Thanks
    Ernesto

hi... if you are aware of modem settings...logon to modem's setup page and select "ethernet bridged" and save the settings...connect modem >> router >> pc and logon to router's and select PPPoE under "automatic configuration DHCP" put the username and password and save the settings...click on status tab and try connecting to the PPPoE server...however if you are not aware of the modem settings...well in that case you need to get in touch with your ISP and convert the modem into the bridge mode...let me know if you have any issues will get back to you...
    thanks.

  • WRT54G Lost SSID

Recently I lost all wireless connections in the house. The laptops will find a "linksys" connection, but no longer "sees" the home network. The Wii also will not connect. However, wired connections are still fine. Should I just reset the router?

hi... in this case you need to logon to router's  setup page, open I.E. inthe address bar type 192.168.1.1 it would ask for username and password, put "admin" without any username...click on wireless tab, try changing SSID, channel to 11 and save the settings, click on wireless security and try setting up WEP security, go to advanced wireless settings reduce beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304...and try connecting to wireless n/w check whether it works or not.

  • Replaced iPod but lost setup CD - what to do?

Hi! I recently received a new iPod after my first hard drive crashed.
I'm trying to setup the new iPod, but I've lost the initial setup CD - what do I do? I've re-installed iTunes and the iPod updater, neither recognize the new iPod. I've tried using a friend's setup CD, but hers is from a mini ... which doesn't seem to be compatible.
Any ideas? I'm SO at the end of my rope here.
    Thank you in advance!
    Ashley

    Hello Ashley,
You do not need the setup CD, you can get all the softwares you need on apple.com i.e. iTunes and iPod updater - thats all you need. The problem is your new iPod do not get recongized by your PC. Put it in disk mode and plug it again.

  • WRT54G Security setup

I hope no one minds a question from an amateur.
In the setup for my WRT54G, on the "Wireless" tab, under "Wireless Security," I'm not sure what to choose from the dropdown box for "Security Mode." It defaults to "Disable" and the choices are WPA-Preshared Key, WPA RADIUS, RADIUS and WEP.
Should I choose one of these options? Am I running a security risk by leaving this set to the default?
It appears that an explanation for this option was left out of the manual on the CD. The topics go from "Wireless Settings" on one page directly to "Wireless MAC Filter" on the next. Dang.
    Thanks in advance.

In answer to some of your original questions:
You are taking a risk if you don't secure your wireless system.  If your wireless is not secured, anyone in the area can log into your router and use your DSL line.  At a minimum, this wastes your bandwidth.  At a maximum, someone could send spam, visit child porn sites, distribute viruses, and give away copyrighted music  ---  all from a DSL account with your name on it!  So my advice is ... secure your system.
RADIUS is a system designed for businesses, and requires special software, so home users do not normally use this.
The general rule is that you should use the highest level of security that is supported by all the devices on your wireless network.
For more information and suggestions about setting up wireless security, please see my previous post at:

  • Linksys WRT54g + WAP54g setup help

yes i know im using older hardware but its what i have available lol. Hoping some one can help me out. its been bugging me like hell.
been playing with it for a few days and i cant figure it out
its driving me mad lol hope someone can help.
    heres the setup.
WRT54g Router is setup in point A with wireless connection on.
Laptop computer at point C wireless connection, which is on the opposite side of the house. so this means it gets very low signal.
    looks like this A ------------------------------------------ C
Now i was trying to put WAP54g at point B so that it can get signal from point A and boost it so that the signal can reach point C
so it looks like this A ---------------- B ------------------- C least that's what im trying to accomplish.
the wap54g only has for AP modes and i tried em all and cant get it to work. im missing a step i just dont know where lol
    Access point
    AP Client
Wireless Repeater (this looked like the obvious choice but it didnt work or i did it wrong)
    Wireless Bridge
    can someone help out?
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you refer my previous post, you can setup your AP in a repeater mode and Router and AP will communicate wirelessly and it will send the wireless signal to your laptop. If you want to connect the AP hardwired to the router then, configure the AP in AP Mode.

  • WRT54G Mac Setup

Just bought a WRT54G v8 for a Mac running 10.4.6. Hooked it up, got internet connection fine. Went to 192.168.1.1 and the browsers timed out. Tried Safari, Firefox and IE. Have reset the modem five times by now. Went to Ask Linksys and tried the router IP address in my network manager and still no connect to the online UI. Spent an hour on the phone with tech support and they say I need a windows machine to config correctly before I install on a Mac. Yet, I've seen a bunch of Mac users saying it's easy to do.
Any idea why I can't get onto the online UI? Firmware upgrade? I read through those postings and they seem unclear as to exactly how to do it properly. Maybe my brain is tired.
    Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, and I realize that. Have been working with Macs for 17 years now. This is a G4 I have had for several years and have never had a problem with connectivity through the ethernet port or accessing the internet. The user guides are vague and outdated with the newer versions of OSX. I've rarely heard of having to "setup" a Mac. A PC, sure. Third-party hardware in a Mac, sure (I've worked Mac IT for years). But Macs have been mostly plug and play in their simpler configurations. The onboard Apple native hardware rarely requires tinkering by the operator, unless it fails. If you can suggest the type of NIC settings I should be concerned with, that might help. Thanks!

  • WRT54G Wireless Setup page won't load and other issues.

Well I have had quite the mess the last 24 hours. I'll start from the beginning and attempt to spell out the issues I am having. I have had this router for 4 years or so and have never had a problem.
I recently purchased a PS3 and started using the wireless feature that it offeres. Well I was having problems staying connected and was running in to IP address conflicts with my laptop. So I thought I would cure that by moving the router to the ps3 and using a wired connection for its internet. So that is what I did and that is when the problems started snowballing!!  After I got the router moved and everything set up, all seemed well at first.
Shortly thereafter I realized I was still getting IP conflicts. So i did some research and saw where I could dedicate an address for the ps3 and also change some of the wireless settings on the router homepage. I previously had never password protected my network. I'm in a rural area and there aren't many people around that would be trying to get on it. But I figured since I was there I would rename the network and password protect it and all of that. Well that didn't help either. I was still having problems.
I then did all of the resets. Online, on the unit and also a power cycle. So I was back to square one with the settings at this point. So today I noticed that my connection would go from its norm of 54mbps down to1 and then lose connection. I did the resets and restarts and all of that, to no avail. Then it got to the point where it wouldn't connect at all. I checked the actual connection by connecting my computer directly to the modem and it worked flawlessly. So I know it is a router problem. I also tried using 2 seperate laptops and they both responded the same.
I think part of the issue I had then was that the modem and router were on my entertainment center and weren't very high and were in a shelf. Also, my surround sound receiver does use a wireless connection to 2 of its speakers. I didn't know the proper placement of a router until I had this problem. Now that it is back in its previous location the connection seems to be normal, although once in the last hour I did drop down to 1mbps and have to disconnect and reconnect. But it hasn't happened again so far.
However, I am unable to access the wireless page on the router setup page. I did yesterday but it won't load today. On either computer. So I am unable to change the name of my network or assign a password or change any other wireless setting. And again, I've tried every reset method and it still don't work.
Also, does anyone have any advice on the conflicting IP addresses with the ps3? They sent me an email stating that it may be a port or firewall issue? After doing some online research it seems this particualr router has had a lot of problems getting along with the ps3.
I hope I haven't put in too much information but I was just trying to make sure I had any questions I could think of answered ahead of time. I've tried about every avenue I could already. I tried the chat help and was told I didn't qualify and was sent to the phone assistance who after a half hour realized I didn't qualify for that help either. So, here I am!!! Thanks ahead of time!

Make sure that there is no static IP address on any of your computer. You can assign a static IP address on Play station.
Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable.
Download t he latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer.
Open the setup page of the router. Go to Administration tab and click on Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on your router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Change the MTU size on the router to 1365.
Go to Wireless tab and change the wireless network name and channel to 11. Also change the wireless security settings.

It's not under the Email Setup icon on your device?
Make sure the icon isn't hidden. From the main screen hold your ALT key then click on an icon and choose Show All. See if you see your Setup Wizard icon then. If you do just ALT+click on it and uncheck Hide
Also check under Options | Language and see if you can change the default language to English UK.
