WRT54G Lost SSID

Recently I lost all wireless connections in the house. The laptops will find a "linksys" connection, but no longer "sees" the home network. The Wii also will not connect. However, wired connections are still fine. Should I just reset the router?

hi... in this case you need to logon to router's  setup page, open I.E. inthe address bar type 192.168.1.1 it would ask for username and password, put "admin" without any username...click on wireless tab, try changing SSID, channel to 11 and save the settings, click on wireless security and try setting up WEP security, go to advanced wireless settings reduce beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304...and try connecting to wireless n/w check whether it works or not.

  • WRT54G lost wifi

Hi, My WRT54G lost the wifi connection. I can get the internet if I connect the cable from my modem to my computer but my wireless connection is gone. So it's an issue with the router or settings. I called Linksys and was told the settings would have to be reset/upated. I was told there would e a fee. I did not want to pay a fee. I'd like to try to resolve myself. Technician suggested I search the forums.
Is this something I can fix myself? If so, how? I have a Mac laptop. Verizon ISP.
    Thank you.

To reset, you would need to press and hold the reset button for about 30 seconds. Then set it up again. Try these links for help:

  • WRT54G the SSID keeps changing on it's own

WRT54G the SSID keeps changing on it's own every few days on my secure network then I need reset the SSID and Key again

It would help to know how the SSID changes exactly, i.e. what SSID you have set up and to what it changes.
Does you router have a secure easy setup button? On the latest WRT54G models it should be a button with a Cisco logo. Do you or anyone press that button?

My photosmart has lost SSID and deactivated wireless without any known reason. Diagnotics only hint is that IP addresses, SSID, etc are empty. However it can detect the 802.11 (ethernet address but no IP) home network where it belongs.

  • Wrt54g lost settings and wireless not detected

    Hello,
I recently had a problem with my wrt54g so i popped in the installation cd and went through the basic setup again.  Now my wired desktop works perfectly but none of my wireless devices are finding the router.  I also went into the config webpage and noticed all my settings had been reset.  All my port forwarding for the PS3 and XBox 360 had disappeared!!!  I couldn't believe it since it took me forever to get the initial settings to work right.
Now my laptop, ps3, xbox360 all cannot detect the the router.  However, the wired desktop pc works fine.  Is there any way to recover lost settings and how do I get the router to be detected by my wireless devices?

I think your router got resetted and that is why you lost all the settings on the router...Change the wireless settings on the router(ssid , channel , wep)...Click here to change the Wireless Settings on the router...Also check the related articles in the given link...

  • Please help!!! WRT54G lost after a reboot

I have 2 laptops and both have always been hooked to my wireless network in my house. I had a system crash and I had to reboot windows xp home (teenage son found out about the Trojan virus the hard way) and now I cant seem to get my computer to find my wrt54g that my wifes laptop is on right now. So the network is still fine but apparently my router and windows are having problems. It was saying it was connected but with limited or no connectivity even though it had a full signal at first but then I tried to use the linksys instructions as per the technician but now It wont do that anymore.
I followed the instructions and went to the dos prompt and typed ipconfig/release because I had a 169.xxx.x.x address but it wont renew because I have no connection it says. Technician wont talk to me without the $39.00 fee and I dont have a local computer guy.
Can anyone please walk me through how to get reconnected?

You are getting the ip address of 169.254.x.x as the computer is not connected to the network.Connect the computer to the router...Open the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar..Under the Wireless tab, change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz..If the SSID(Network Name) is "linksys" then, change it to some unique name.Under the Wireless Security subtab, Check the Security Key..If you are using WEP then, note down the Key1 as the network key.
On the computer, remove the preferred network and then, try to connect the Wireless Network...  Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties.
Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names present in the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...It will connect...

  • WRT54G Problem- SSID not showing in list & router not sending correct IP address

Everthing was humming along.  Comcast Internet = fine.  WRT54G router, several XP Pro/SP 3 computers, 1 Powerbook + wireless printers. etc = fine.  PCs find network SSID and auto-connect without fail.
Then, Comcast Internet down.  Reboot everything. Network back up.  Computers then get wrong IP Address or do not see SSID.  (No config changes on computers.)
    So I:
    1.  Reinstall WRT54G firmware (v8) - no change.
    2.  Install new fresh WRT54G - using CD to install  - no change
    3.  Update firmware in router used in #2 - no change
    4.  Complete reset cycle and reinstall -no change.
    5.  Repeat same reset with original router -no change
    6.  Using static IP address/default gate way/DNS address - PC finds and connects to SSID but does not access Internet.
Result - no computers find SSID.  (SSID is hidden.) Don't find it when it's not hidden either.
Ethernet cabled PC works just fine.  Gets correct IP Address & Internet  access is fine.
Cable modem = Motorola Surf Board.  No physical locations of any omponent has changed.
Is it possible that both WRT54G's are not working?
Is it somehow a Comcast problem?
Should I try some other router settings?
    Many thanks!

Thanks.  These are great instructions and quite useful for setup.  Unfortunately, my problems seemed much more complex.
In the end, I redidi all the networking from scratch from the router through all the connected devices.  Finally got things back up.  I don't know how, but the Comcast failure seemed to corrupt lots of the settings even if they all looked OK.

  • WRT54G - Lost Settings

I have had my WRT54G running my home-office network successfully, for 14 months - 2 wired desktops (1 on XP and 1 on Vista) and 1 wireless laptop on Vista.  A couple of days' ago, I went into my Linksys software to retrieve my "router password" so I could temporarily  hookup a guest's wireless laptop.  To my surprise, I was greeted with a "setup" window, and the following happened when I attempted to redo the setup (by the way, when I started to redo the setup, all 3 of my computers, including my wireless laptop, were still networked together, as well as able to be on line!): The setup made me redo my password, and then when attempting to "find" the router, named the router on the right side of the window and stating that "Network Status" was OK, but in the "tree" - it had (still has)  the yellow warning triangle, along with a "No Router" message under the grayed out router icon.  In the tree, under "Other Devices" - I get "No Devices", and "Computers" - "No Computers."
Since this new "setup," I do not have access to networking between my 3 computers, as well as my (wireless) laptop not being able to go on line.  However, my wired desktops are still on line, but not able to network between them.
HELP Please!  Do I need to delete my Linksys software and start over? - or, is there possibly something wrong with my Linksys router?  By the way, I am connected through a Cisco 678 DSL Modem.

Thanks Binky!  Both of the desktop PC's are in the correct local IP address range, and I know what the laptop should be, but of course, it won't show because it's not connecting to the network or to the internet.  Ping on my XP desktop (which is the host computer) checks out, but Ping on the other desktop (pinging itself), gets a "general failure", which I'm guessing is (even though it's on line) because it can't connect to the "home network."
We still need to go back to what I believe is the original problem, and that is the fact that the router is still not totally recognized (see my note regarding the "grayed out" tree, saying "No Router).  I believe that our desktops are on line only because the connection is passing from the Cisco 678 DSL modem THROUGH the Linksys Router, and if I hard-wired my laptop to the router, it would be on line also (but, still not networked)!  So... my question still is... do I need to disconnect everything, uninstall the Linksys software and start over... or can I reinstall over the top of the existint software... or do we think my Router actually is defective?
The 3rd option seems weird to me (defective Linksys), considering until I discovered it wanted me to redo the setup, all 3 computers were networking successfully together and on line, including my laptop on a wireless connection.

  • WRT54G lost connection to Internet from Wired computer, but wireless still connect

I have the router hard wired to a desktop computer and have 2 other computers connecting wirelessly through it.  The hard wired computer suddenly could not connect to the internet, yet the 2 wireless computers still can.  The computer was 5 yrs. old and I had bought a new one, so thought it was the best time to set it up.  I have the same problem with the new computer.  The only way I could get access to the internet on it was to run a line from the USB port on the DSL modem directly to the computer.  I can still see the 2 other computers and their files through the router, just can't get the router to see the modem from the hard wired computer.  The 2 wireless computers can access the modem through the router, but the wired one can't!  According to Linksys the problem is with my ethernet/lan on the computer.(both computers?!)  According to the repair/diagnose on my lan connection, it says there is a problem with the router or modem.  Any suggestions?

I found the problem, the router is bad.  I bought a new router and installed it, made no changes to the computer hardware, and the new router worked fine with the ethernet connection for the hard wired computer.  I am really disappointed in the help that I received from linksys.  They kept insisting there was nothing wrong with the router and that the 2 computers I tried to hard wire to the router both had bad ethernet ports.  I will not be buying their products again.

  • Connecting two WRT54G wireless routers - how to configure

    Hi All,
I have two WRT54G wireless routers. One is currently providing wireless access for several users at a local law firm. I need to connect a second wireless router for a user who works for another company in the same office. The second wireless router is basically going to be used for Internet access. The Office Manager at the law office does not want the user from the other company using their wireless router directly, BUT they will allow me to hook up the second wireless router for Internet access. I realize this doesn't really make sense in terms of security, but this is the scenario I must abide to. So I am wondering how to configure the second router. I am thinking that I connect a CAT5 from one port on the first router to the Internet port on the second router. I am also guessing that I need to assign the the second router a static IP with a different subnet such as 192.168.2.1. I am not sure if the first router still has the default 192.168.1.1. If the first router does use 192.168.1.1 would I need to change the IP on the second one to one on another subnet? Thanks.

You will need a setup like this:
    Modem  ---  new WRT54G  ----  existing WRT54G
                     192.168.2.1              192.168.1.1    ( "Local IP address" )
Modem connects to Internet port of new WRT54G.
LAN port of new WRT54G connects to Internet port on existing WRT54G.
SSID:  different on each router  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  enabled on both routers
encryption:  recommend WPA2, or at least WPA  (can be same or different on the two routers).
    passwords:   different on each router.
channel:  try to stay at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channel 1, 6, and 11 work best, but any two different channels can be used.
Any "port forwarding" used by existing WRT54G must also be done on new WRT54G.
Both routers need a real login password (not "admin" )
New WRT54G will need "Intenet connection type" set to whatever is currently on existing WRT54G.  Internet connection type for existing WRT54G will need to be set to DHCP.

  • WRT54G V.5 and WAP54G in "Repeater Mode" works flawlessly!

If any of you've wondered if the combination of a Linksys WRTG54 V 5.0 Wireless Router and a Linksys WAP54G can function in "Repeater Mode". The answer is Yes. Repeater mode means to repeat your Lan wirelessly. All clients of the WAP54G are on the same network as the WRT54G i.e. 192.168.1.0 and are DHCP clients of the WRT54G.
SSID is the same, the encryption I use is WPS-PSK with TKIP, Channel is the Same. PassPhrase is the same.
Setup is simple just follow the User Guide with one exception. The  exception being when you configure the WAP54G in "Repeater mode" enter the "Wireless MAC address of the WRT54G router, not the "LAN" MAC address as the user guide says.
I've extended my network to my Bro's across the street, with external antenna's ,the speed is great almost like being at home, when close to the WAP54G. One drawback is the coverage is poor except when in close proximity to the WAP54G. I'm looking into a 2.4 ghz bidirectional Wlan amplifier to hook up to the WAP54G for extending the wireless coverage.

The WAP54G also works with the 300N wireless router.

  • Airport on MacBook "forgets" connection on bootup

I am experiencing a strange problem. Whenever I bootup my MacBook, Airport is enabled but the signal icon stays greyed out - it used to connect straight away.
The wireless access point doesn't broadcast an SSID, and uses a WPA Personal key - all of which I've configured in OS X.
Now I know I'll be told to check my settings, which I have done. Also, I don't see how they can be the issue because if I click the Airport icon, and turn airport off, then turn it back on again - voila, connection established.
Any suggestions? I've also tried setting the connection up as a preferred network in System Preferences > Network, which hasn't helped either.

Had lots of problems here and it was a procedural thing....
Open network preferences, configure Airport, delete all/any preferred nets, then ensure to click apply.
use the airport menu bar option then to add your preferred network...
Worked for me and resolved the dropped/lost SSID's

So there may be an instability bug here -- hence keen to ensure I'm running the latest firmware first before investigating further.

  • Repeated lost connections when using WRT54g

    Hello everyone.
I have a Lynksys WRT54g v5 and a cable modem, my ISP is Virgin Mobile. Every half an hour or so my internet connection is lost and can only be regained by reseting my modem by turning it on and off. The lost connections appear to occur more frequently when the traffic is heavier. The interuptions occur even when I only have one wired PC connection.
If I connect the PC directly to the modem the connection works fine.
I have already installed the latest firmware, reset to factory settings, tried a MAC address clone as suggested in another thread but nothing has helped.
Is there anything I can try or should I just bin the router?
    Thanks for your help!

Version 5 and 6 of this router are of a terrible design. No amount of tweaking, reconfiguration or firmware upgrades will likely help with the disconnect problem. Earlier versions are of a much better design. I had disconnect problems with my version 6 router for over two month which could not be resolved by many attempts through Linksys tech-support. Even replacing it with 2 more version 6 routers did not resolve the disconnect problems which occured 3 or more times a day.
After I changed to a version 3 of the WRT54G the disconnect problem was instantly cured. Version 4 and below or WRT54GL ( which is really a resurrected version4)should work fine.
