WRT54G: plugged in and connected to internet, tried to go thru setup and now I can't

Hi folks. I just got 2 computers and I am trying to get my laptop so I can use it around the house. I got the modem and I plugged it in and fired it up. Everything worked fine without needing to go thru the setup and I was able to use the internet on both my desktop and laptop. I saw that the network I was connecting to was insecure, no password or anything, so I tried to go thru with the setup. I installed the driver and went into the setup, the program was detecting my router and modem and network, it was after it asked me for a password that it started to look for my internet connection again and this time, it just stopped working. The prompt asked me what connection it was (cable) but it still didn't work after. I went back to my computers and neither can use the internet anymore. I resetted the modem and router, and I tried doing it again, the internet works fine, went thru with it and the same situation happens again. What is going on?

Try configuring security manully if the internet is working through the router. try these steps: Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes) click on ok. Click on the Wireless tab- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed - Provide any name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box, all in lower cases without any spaces in between.- Set wireless channel to 11 - And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings.Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the `Network Identifier. For Wireless Security : - Now Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security.Change the Wireless security mode to WEP Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the Pass phrase blank, don't type in anything. And under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please.Click on save

Wireless Network.

You could be right that the response to clicking on help is a symptom of an entirely separate issue, but nevertheless the secure link to itunes is definitely failed, and I am unable to log into Itunes on either PC.
I also noticed that even if I click on the link to create a whole new Apple ID, I cannot do that either, presumably because the secure link is not working.
After I noticed that there were weird things happening this morning, I did change my Apple ID password in the hope that this might resolve it, but it seemed to make it worse. Now, all of my apple devices keep constantly prompting me for the apple ID password, and randomly either accepting it, or telling me it is wrong. I know the password is correct because I can log onto the apple Manage My Apple ID screens in a web browser with it.
I was starting to think that this is an ISP issue (BT Broadband), but I have not seen anyone else posting with the same issue. Does Apple use a different security protocol to everyone else? I'm asking because all other secure services seem to be working fine, but anything related to apple that requires a secure connection or authentication is having issues.
I have also seen reference to making sure that Itunes is listed as an allowed program in Windows Firewall. I cannot seem to do this because it says that my Windows firewall is being managed by McCafee. I have checked the settings in McCafee, and it appears to me that Itunes, Bonjour, and many other apple programs have been granted "Full" access. As said before in any case I have tried temporarily disabling the firewall and even this did not solve the problem.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. It was only showing me an error message "EFI files are missing", I realized that it is trying to boot from the new partition I created for the installation of the linux I intended to do.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

I reset my WRT54G and now I can't get online.

I did a factory reset of my WRT54G v.2 last night after I was unable to access the router's setting to set up a WEP password (couldn't remember login/pass and the default login wasn't working) and now I can not connect to the internet through my router.
-I have no problem getting online when I run directly through my DSL modem.
-I called my ISP to see what they recommended- someone told me perhaps a modem reset would help. I'm on a DSL modem, which they had me configure to PPOE. I set up the router for PPOE under the basic settings tab, adding my user name and password. I changed no other settings. Basically my ISP said everything was normal on their end.
-I've Downloaded the firmware and updated that through the router
-When the router is fully connected there are no light anomalies that I know of (WLAN light and 1 & 2 ports are solid, internet light blinks once every 5 seconds or so).
-I've tried powering down, unplugging, and waiting- all the usual tips.
-My wireless computers acknowledge the router's existence, but like the wired computers, are unable to connect to the internet.
-On my network's properties the number of packets sent and received climbs at a very small rate, but they do increase (I'm told that activity is a good sign).
-One of the oddest things is, when I attempt to run the installation software, when connected to the internet directly through my modem, as suggested by the installation wizard, the first step that attempts to check for an internet connection says it can't find a connection even though I can browse the web perfectly fine.
EDIT: I think this might be caused by my ethernet cable/network running through a secondary port in the back of my PC. The start up disk is looking for a signal from the default/1st port and therefore getting no connection, even though my computer is online. Will have to check this later.
-When connected to my modem, I run cmd then ipconfig, my IP address is
192.168.1.13, is there something I need to do with this in the router set up?
Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing differently? I've reset my router before and never been this stuck. I called customer support but they basically wanted $40 to troubleshoot my router as the warranty has expired and I'd almost rather just buy a new one.

I'm not sure what that means Richard, but I did change the router's IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.5.1- isn't that what you meant in your first post. I know that isn't reflected in my screen capture that I took last night, but I did do that this morning after I read your post.

I tried this- at least to the part about checking the IP address under WAN. I assume you mean the WAN page in the modem setup- nothing looked any different after trying what you suggested, and I'm not really sure where I would be "getting IP in public range" or what that means.
I'm about to give up and just buy a new router to see if I can get the same lack of results with a different one. My ISP maintains that everything is set up correctly on their end and really can't do anything more for me. The Modem works and is set up correctly and they can give tech support for a router.

Downloaded file from internet and now I can't find it

So my dumb *** downloaded a file from the internet today from an untrusted source and now I can't find it anywhere except for when I click on the downloads button on the safari web browser (i.e. )
I clicked on the file it shows that I downloaded and this pops up
"Safari can’t show the file “4-More-PeopleAreUsingCellPhonestoListentoOnlineRadioinTheirCars.xlsx” in the Finder because “4-More-PeopleAreUsingCellPhonestoListentoOnlineRadioinTheirCars.xlsx” has moved since you downloaded it."
I looked for it in the finder window under the "downloads" folder, looked under "All my files" sorted it by the date added, clicked on the magnifying glass next to the only place I can see it and the file still didnt show up in finder.

I have no idea why it disappeared from your Mac. But I trust this reassures you there does not seem to be anything malicious about the file.
You might want to search on your Mac using some of the key words in the file.
Not that I am denying the results but out of curiousity how did you manage to download and locate the file when I didn't provide you with the website from which I downloaded it from?
The thing is, what I supposedly downloaded wasn't supposed to be an xlsx file nor any type of text file for that matter. I got it from a website called ryushare.com.
I also tried to search for it with the use of the key words in the file you found and no luck. Any way to know for a fact it's not going to affect my computer? Also, any way I can look for the file and delete it through terminal?

I don't follow your instructions... mine goes Settings->General->Cellular and from there it's just on/off options for Cellular Data, Enable 3G, Data Roaming, etc. Or I could go Settings->General->Profile APN Carrier Settings but when I click that it just shows as verified but no Visual Voice APN or MMS Settings. If I click More Details it goes to Signing Certificate which has a bunch of parameters for unlockit.co.nz but I am unable to change anything.

I downloaded version 3.6.12 and now Firefox can't connect to websites

I had version 3.6.9 installed, then I downloaded version 3.6.12 and now Firefox can't connect to websites. It says "Unable to connect." I followed all the instructions on the help page about checking my firewall and removing then re-adding Firefox to the list of safe programs, but it still won't work. Is there any way I can re-download version 3.6.9? Or does anyone know what else I can try?

I found my problem. I had an expired version of Norton Internet Security that didn't uninstall properly, but I was able to remove it with the Norton Removal Tool and now Firefox works.
