WRT54G Router DHCP leases
I would like to see the router DHCP leases on a screen in the firmware so you can see how many are being used and which ones. Who do I need to contact to pass along this suggestion?
I have the WRT54G V6.0 Router with firmware 1.01. I get the idiot of the week award for reading the manual and finding it on a page when logged in to the router. I just didn't look far enough in the software to find it before I posted. Sorry! All idiot bashing posts welcome..starting with the big DUH...........

WRT54G - router/DHCP dies a few times a day
I have the same problem - WRT54G - all the machines at our place are macs with various flavors of OS X - mostly 10.4. Every few days - sometimes 4 times a day, the router stops working - basically the DHCP server stops giving out valid IP addresses and nobody - wired or wireless - can connect the the internet. It still appears to be connected the the net via the cable modem, its just the router part that is failing. This is very disappointing. Unplugging the WRT54G fixes it - but sometimes the same problem will happen 15 minutes later.

WRT54g router DHCP problems (I think)
I just got a wrt54g wireless router for my organization hooked it up and started having problems. I set the router to use DHCP and *tried* to set the “Maximum Number of DHCP Users:” to 15 and clicked “Save Settings” but when I went back to that screen it would be back at the default (5), I have since tried to change it many more times and no matter what number I pick (2-230) it still shows up as 5. Anyway. 1st I connected my XP notebook and was able to access the internet (specifying that my computer obtain the IP address automatically) Next I connected my colleague’s vista notebook and he could access the internet. (specifying that his computer obtain the IP address automatically) Next I connected another colleague’s xp desktop (specifying that my computer obtain the IP address automatically) *Next* I tried another colleague’s XP notebook computer and started having problems. I specified that it should obtain the IP address automatically but it would not and kept getting a 169.254.x.x address instead of one like 192.168.1.x (it also keeps showing a subnet mask different from the one I specified on the router). I went back to my notebook (which had been working fine) and discovered that now (without my making any changes to my notebook) I am having the same problem. I am now having the above problem (computers not receiving addresses automatically) with all but one or two computers (the vista notebook continues to work). Someone on usenet suggested I try putting in an IP address manually so I did and it worked but #1 I need more than 5 computers to be attached at one time (the router refuses to accept any number higher than 5 [though I can specify *less* than 5, it will for example remember 4 and 3]) #2 The router should be assigning IP addresses to all the computers, I shouldn’t have to be putting in the addresses manually.
Did you try to flash/reflash the routers firmware? Try that and reset the factory default settings and cycle the power. Then reconfigure the router and let us know if it continues to do that.

Need help with understanding static vs dhcp on wrt54g router
I currently have a NAS200 device attached to my WRT54G router. The WRT54G is in DHCP mode so as to allow my various laptops and cameras to be accessed over the internet. What happens is that when I have a power failure the NAS200 is given a new ip address even though its plugged into a service port. I am then forced to go into the router and change the port mapping to whatever port the router has given to the NAS. Is there any way to keep the NAS200 at a specific ip address regardless of router resets. Thanks Hexmate
You have to set the static IP address on the NAS. The NAS is currently configured to use DHCP. Change it there to set a specific static IP address. The router itself does not have to option to set a fixed IP address to a specific device via DHCP.
For static IP addresses make sure to choose an IP address which is not used by any other device nor is inside the DHCP server address pool of the router. With default configuration a Linksys router uses 192.168.1.1 and the DHCP server uses 192.168.1.100-149, thus you have addresses 192.168.1.2-99 and 150-254 available.
Use an static IP address like 192.168.1.50, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1 (if the NAS needs internet, e.g. for time synchronization) and DNS 192.168.1.1. That should do it. Again: this has to be done on the NAS device. The router has no option for that. -
WRT150N DHCP Lease Renewal Lockup
I have a WRT150N that uses both wireless and wired clients. It is connected to a Roadrunner cable modem that renews DHCP ever 24 hours (approximately at 0545). If one of the clients is in use at that time the WRT150N locks up and will not respond to any of the clients. I have to unplug the WRT150N to restart it. I had a WRT54G previously and this never happened. I've uploaded the newest firmware to no avail and I can't afford having to do a hard restart 3 or 4 times a week. Is there a solution or would it be better to deep 6 this router and go back to what works.
When you noticed that the DHCP lease has not renewed, if you go to a client machine and do a release/renew will it get an IP address then? Check and see if you are on the latest firmware version for your router. If you are having to reboot the router just to have DHCP broadcast acknowledged then you may want to go ahead and give your SBSC a call and open up a case with them.
You can find your SBSC here. -
Hi, I recently got hold of a WRT54G Router and am trying to set it up....unfotunately, my knowledge of this kind of stuff is, lets say, basic! haha
I was wondering if anyone has set up this model (or any other model) with AOL as their ISP and if they could let me know what details I need to add or change on the set up page, and where to find it.
Some of the main info I know I need is the Host Name and Domain name, which I'm somehow having trouble tracking down. Also, I think I need to set it up as in PPOE (I think thats right...), but am not totally sure what account I'm initially dialling in with...
Any help would be brilliant! Thanks guys.okay... connect the DSL modem >> router >> computer, try resetting the router back to factory default settings by pressing the small reset button on the back panel of the router...power cycle the n/w by unplugging the power cable of the modem and the router, wait for couple of mins. and power up the modem first, once the modem is rebooted power up the router...logon to the router's setup page, open I.E. and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1, it would ask for username and password, put "admin" as a password without any username, liksys setup page pops up...try changing encapsulation "automatic configuration DHCP" to "PPPoE" and try setting up username and password provided by the ISP and save the settings...click on the status tab on the router and try connecting to the PPPoE server....let me know the results

My internet keeps going down and when I try to renew the DHCP lease it stops working altogether
Every couple of weeks my internet would go down, I would be surfing the web and suddenly my connection would fail. I would try renewing my DHCP lease and every time I did I would get an IPv4 address of 192.168.0.100. Originally, restarting the router would fix the problem but the past couple of times they needed a technician from the provider to fix it. Even using the Ethernet cable doesn't work either.
is there a reason why this keeps happening and how do I stop it from happening again? Is there anything I can try to fix it on my end?
my computer is a five year old MacBook, running OS X 10.9.4Having the same problem. Watched 25 minutes of a rental and it stopped with the message"unable to load video"
Using current version IPad mini.

No signal through linksys wrt54g router
my internet signal is no longer going through the wrt54g router - don;t know why.
i.e. no wireless handheld or computer and no ethernet when going through the router.
If I bypass the router the internet is fine, with the ethernet cable
I tried shutting everything down with power disconnect for periods of time, then bring everything back to power.
settings in linksys setup 192.168.1.1 look ok as far as I know; signal lights on router and modem are normal; settings in mac system prefs look normal also.
Suggestions?
Thank youhardware WRT54G v2.2

WLC2504 clients not receiving DHCP leases
I'm stock with a 2504 using version 7.0.220.0 that won't lease out DHCP adresses
Wifi clients are unable to get a DHCP lease from an external DHCP server.
The WLC are handling 3 WLAN, 2 using internal DHCP server, 1 (that wont work) using external DHCP. The external DHCP server, is a router/firewall (out of my reach) that suffered from a power out, a short while ago, ever since the DHCP is not working on that VLAN, if client are getting static ip adresses, everything works fine. If i'm using the same network link, and plug it into a computer, I get a DHCP address.
I've enable DHCP proxy
Debbuging DHCP, using: Debug DHCP packets enable
Gives me this:
*DHCP Socket Task: Nov 08 14:21:11.397: c8:0a:a9:cc:6d:f6 DHCP received op BOOTREQUEST (1) (len 308,vlan 20, port 1, encap 0xec00)

ThanksHi Steen,
When a client is in DHCP REQ state on the controller, the controller drops DHCP inform packets. The client will not go into a RUN state on the controller (this is required for the client to pass traffic) until it receives a DHCP discover packet from the client. DHCP inform packets are forwarded by the controller when DHCP proxy is disabled.
Please check this, if still u r facing issue then provide more info.
Can you please paste a client debug of the client having DHCP issues.
Go to cli of the wlc and run the client debug . Diconnect the client then reconnect and gather the output and post.

N82 does not correctly process DHCP leases
I have no problem attaching my new N82 to my, and friends, home wireless networks. However, it fails to connect to the Univeristy Campus network giving the error: "Web: No gateway reply!"
This is because the phone doesn't correctly process DHCP leases with the 'network of one'' (2545.255.255.255) subnet mask.
Campus network details:
HP WAP 530 enterprise access point. The DHCP server is an ISC dhcp server giving out ip address in the standard private class C address range (192.168.1.0) with a subnet mask of (255.255.255.255), and a default route of 192.168.1.1.
This works on Windows 2000/XP/Vista and MAC OSX, but many embedded devices will not add the default route as they see it as outside their subnet. Many institutions use 255.255.255.255 to mitigate inter host communication.
This means I cannot use my N82 at work and I'm not happy. Beware, don't assume you can use your Nokia device at work.If task manager says it's still running, then obviously it hasn't completed, contrary to what you said. Maybe this .exe process isn't written correctly. For example, maybe it is dependent on the current directory it is launched from, and so double-clicking it causes it to be launched from the directory it lives in, but when run from this java app, the working directory is somewhere else.

Continually have to renew DHCP lease
Occasionally my MBP will loose wireless connection. It often happens when my phone accesses the wireless Linksys router.
Every time it happens, I open network preferences, go to Advanced and "Renew DHCP Lease" and it fixes it.
Almost looks like I could use a script or something to make it renew DHCP lease when wireless disconnects.
Any ideas?BoyHowdyDoo wrote:
Try another router. They are cheap.
I guess they're cheap for most people who are happy overspending for Apple products.
Usually not a problem with your Mac.
None of my other non-Apple devices have any problem connecting.
I really appreciate you being one of the few trying to help. My negative comments come from my frustration at Apple. -
Needing to Renew DHCP Lease every five minutes to stay online
I experienced ALL the networking and DNS problems since my Leopard install, but adding OpenDNS servers to my router cured the problem. For two months, anyway. Now, in the last week, I've got problems again, and now the only thing that cures the suddenly dead network connection is to simply Renew DHCP Lease. Instantly my connection works again. But I'm needing to do this LITERALLY every five or ten minutes. Once I do this, it returns me the same IP address (as my router is set to do so), and all works again. Monitoring outbound network activity, I can see continuous failed requests to resolver1.openDNS.com and resolver2.openDNS.com. Barring waiting until 10.5.2, which we all hope resolves these problems (hur hur), any ideas?
I have had wireless problems intermittently for a year, and seriously for 6 weeks. Apple denied the issue and was no help in spite of many tens of thousands of people on their own discussions complaining. I found a post suggesting a couple of things which fixed the problem. I don't know if both are necessary, but the first by itself does not solve the problem.
Lock the channel of your router to channel 1, apparently Apple and 802.11n don't play well together on higher channels. When this becomes a standard this will be resolved I hope.
Open your network preferences, select 'airport' and advanced. Delete unused networks. Select your network.
Open TCP/IP and write down all the settings, configure iPv4 manually. Enter the settings manually. Turn off IpV6.
Open DNS and write down your DNS server. Delete it and re-enter it manually.
This has worked on 2 macbooks and an iMac for the last 3 weeks with no network drops.

DHCP Server is not passing out DHCP Leases
I can't seem to figure out why DHCP server is not passing out DHCP lease a client?
Also I can't seem to figure out why NVI0 interface is UP? I have setup another box similarly and NVI0 is down on that and the DHCP server is working fine on that too. Strange!
I am working on CISCO 881 VPN Router...Please have a look at it and let me know. Thanks

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device
and it provides the default username "cisco" for one-time use. If you have
already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image
supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired.
You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit
this session.
It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level
of 15 using the following command.
username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you
want to use.

endHi Jennifer,
I have gotten it resolved. Per your suggestion, I have turned on debug ip dhcp events and found that POOL EMPTY message. After little research, I found out that I have made a mistake in my excluded-address range.
I have had it as
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.100.101
It should have been
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.101.
It was a typo.
Thank you for the suggestion.

Self-assigned IP after trying to renew DHCP lease for former network
Hi all,
MacBook Pro 15" purchased in Februrary 2008, currently running 10.5.5, up-to-date with patches as of yesterday, 10/20/2008.
For a few weeks now, I've been consistently unable to connect to wireless networks (secured or unsecured, public or private) after changing networks (i.e. going from home to a coffee shop).
I have control over my home network router, and its logs show that upon connecting to the network, OS X tries to renew a DHCP lease for the previous network it was on. Upon receiving the "bad network" DHCP reply, instead of releasing the lease and obtaining a new one, the AirPort interface is immediately assigned an IPV4LL address (from 169.254.0.0/16) and no combination of changing network settings, changing AirPort settings, or rebooting will eliminate the old DHCP lease.
The end result is that my MBP is entirely nonfunctional on some wireless networks that other clients (both Windows and Mac) seem to have no trouble accessing. The problem is quite annoying because I can't connect to access points that (previously) worked fine and whose configurations haven't changed.
In any case where this problem occurs, an old DHCP lease for a different network (10.0.0.0/8 when trying to get on 192.168.0.0/24 or vice versa) is present, so I strongly suspect a DHCP problem. In all cases, I have perfect connectivity to the access point itself, so problems with the wireless connection parameters (including encryption), or those troublesome problems with 802.11b/g/n interoperation seem highly unlikely.
One of two things would help me:
1) Please tell me how to clear the DHCP lease cache. Deleting files from /var/db/dhcpclient/leases does nothing (they appear again upon reboot, identical save for timestamps even after changing network environments, so the cache must be read at boot time and written at shutdown). Selecting "Renew DHCP lease" from the "TCP/IP" tab in the advanced network settings merely attempts to renew the existing lease (for an invalid IP address); it does not appear to release invalid leases.
2) If this is really how the DHCP client is behaving, change the DHCP client so that upon receiving the "Bad network" response, it releases (or simply abandons) the lease and obtains a new one, rather than immediately assigning an IPV4LL address to the AirPort interface.
Additionally, is there any documentation on the Apple DHCP client? Under Linux, I could alter dhcpcd parameters to diagnose things like this. I could find no documentation about the Apple DHCP client outside of Mac Help, which wasn't really any help in this case.
Finally, I do not suspect that this is an instance of the problem discussed in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1352518&tstart=0 as my connection is rock-solid if it can get an IP address when it connects. I've never even seen it hiccup.
Thanks,
Matt Z.I have had wireless problems intermittently for a year, and seriously for 6 weeks.

Dear All, I have currently buy a WRT54G router and would...
Dear All, I have currently buy a WRT54G router and would like to set it up remote desktop so that i can access the office system from my home. But after looking at the Port Forwarding in the Linksys,i do not know how to set as Linksys can only accept IP address start from 192.168.xxx.xxx while my house Prolink router is configure with IP address 10.0.xxx.xxx. The difference in IP address has make me confuse on to how should i go ahead with the settings. Hopefully anyone can help. Thanks a lot JQ
The WRT54G is connected to subnets: one on the internet port and one on the LAN side with the numbered ports and the wireless.
The LAN side uses 192.168.1.* by default. The router uses 192.168.1.1 on this side. This side is where you connect your computers. The connected computers can get addresses by the DHCP server on the WRT. The default address pool of the DHCP server is 192.168.1.100-149.
The internet/WAN port subnet is whatever the next router or your ISP has defined. The router gets a IP address assigned on this side, usually it is the public IP address provided by your ISP if the router is connected directly to the internet. If there is another router then the address of the WRT on the internet/WAN port is usually assigned by this router.
Port forwarding forwards a specific port number on the WAN IP address to a specific computer inside your LAN. Therefore the destination IP address of the router is always the LAN subnet 192.168.1.* as that is the subnet which is used on the LAN side.
If the internet/WAN port IP address of the router is not a public IP address, i.e. if there is another router which uses private addresses 10.0.*.* then you have to configure additional port forwarding on that router.
Remember that the destination of the port forwarding should always be a static IP address and not a DHCP assigned. The latter can change over time. Therefore the computer to which you forward the port should have a fixed static IP address configured on the computer.
