WRT54G Router Locking up

I have two WRT54G routers, v.5 and v.8
I upgraded the firmware on the v. 5 router and now I can not get my IP Phone and inbound port 25 to work.  At first I thought Comcast was blocking port 25.  I have confirmed that this is not the case (it works without the router).  SMTP will not work on port 25 with any type of configuration using the latest firmware for v.5.  I have used Port Forwarding and put the server in the DMZ.  Also, with this rev of the firmware, the IP phone will not work.  I have these ranges forwarded:
TCP Port 1720
TCP 30040 - 30042
UDP 30000 - 30001
This is not a VoIP home service.  This is an Altigen IP phone that connects back to my office so I can work from home.
When I talked to tech support and installed the v1.01.0 firmware, the IP Phone would work but the SMTP forward would not work at all.
I purchased a new v8 router with the latest firmware on it and I can now get the SMTP to work, but the IP Phone will not work.  I also have connected the IP Phone directly to the cable modem and it works fine.
Any help would be great!!!!
Thank you

I'm also having the same problem. Here are the details.
WRT54G v8.2.05
Local IP: 192.168.1.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server is enabled.
Starting IP Address: 192.168.1.100
Max number of DHCP users: 50
Altigen phone static IP set to 192.168.1.99
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Under port range forwarding:
1718-1719         UDP
1720                  TCP
30040-30042     TCP
30000-30001     UDP
All these ports forward to 192.168.1.99
I can receive calls without any problems, but when I pick up the receiver to make a call all traffic stops, both wired and wireless. I have to pull the power plug on the router to get things working again.

  • WRT54G router locks up when connecting wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player

My WRT54G  router locks up 100% of the time when attempting to connect connect wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player (Model number BD-P3600). I can connect to it with a cable no problem, but when I attempt to do so wirelessly and type in the password on the Blue Ray player, it attempts to connect but the router locks up and all devices connected to it (wired or wirless) lose connectivity. Any ideas?

    Try the following steps:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.
    # Then Click on wireless Tab select Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, and 11. Click Save Settings.
#Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 50
~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304
    Then check the connectivity status..

  • WRT54G router locking up - another one

So I have skimmed all the messages and the FAQ's, and some history I support many network customers running Cisco, Nortel and other network gear.
    My service provider whom is Rogers Portable works on DSL but does not require a MAC Address;
If I plug in any device directly into my ISP everything works fine.
If I plug in my Vonage VOIP Hub and plug my PC's into it, everything works fine.
If I plug my 54G into my ISP and then plug everything else into it, everything works fine for 4 hours, 8 hours, 2 days, it is kind of inconsistent.
The only way to get my network back is to remove power from the 54G for 15 seconds or so. Once it reboots everything is fine till sometime later.
Now I haven't tried Mac cloning, but I don't understand why this would make any difference. I can plug one of 3 PC's directly into the ISP and everything works great, as soon as I use the 54G everything starts to go amis after several hours.
I have flashed to the latest firmware, no difference. Any ideas, should I ask for an RMA number to return this device. I have only owned it about a month and it is getting worse as time goes on.
    Thanks
    Walter

have you tried playing around with the MTU size? try 1492 1400 1300 or 576 and see what value improves your connection...

  • Not able to connect my Iphone to my WRT54GS router with security enabled

As the subject line states, I'm not able to connect my Iphone to my WRT54GS router when the security is enabled. When ever I attempt to connect to my network with my phone it always tells me the password is incorrect. I have double checked the password in the easylink advisor and it matches up. I have also tried both WPA and WEP with the same result, I know that the wireless is working on the router as I turned the security off and was able to connect to it. I updated the firmware this evening also with no changes. If anyone could help me with this issue it would be much appreciated.

First of all, in the router, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also, in the router, set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your iPhone find and lock on to your router's signal.
To connect using WEP, enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router)  into the iPhone, not the WEP password or passphrase.
To connect using WPA, make sure that there is not an encryption nomenclature problem.  For example, WPA is not the same as WPA with AES.  Please note the following:
WPA    =   PSK    =   WPA with TKIP  =  WPA   personal
    WPA2  =   PSK2  =   WPA with AES   =  WPA2 personal
I am not certain, but your iPhone probably does just ordinary WPA  (not WPA with AES).  Assuming that this is correct, then the router should be set to:
    "WPA personal"  with  "TKIP"
Also, in the iPhone, be sure to delete the entry for your unsecured connection to your router, before you try to input info regarding the secured connection to the router.
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT54G Router and passphrase question

I purchased a laptop computer last week and a WRT54G router.  Got home, set it up with no major problems and had a question about the passphrase/password
My setup:  1 desktop computer and 1 laptop computer
The first time I got on my network from the laptop, it asked me for the passphrase and then let me on.  The next time I fired up the laptop, it just automatically connected me to my network
When I look at my network on my laptop, it says "Security-enabled".
Shouldn't I have to use the passphrase everytime I connect to my network?  Or, does my network recognize the laptop and automatically signs it in.

Lilla's Tips for Securing your Home Router...
Change the router password (default=admin) to a 32 character password using a Strong Password Generator (e.g., keygen, wlankeygen).
IP Address of the router. ... Many default to the standard 192.168.1 or 2 subnet internally and give the router itself the IP address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 ... consider changing the IP addressing to a difficult-to-guess internal subnet like 192.168.12.1 or 192.168.83.1 (you can use any number from 1 to 254 in the third position in most cases). Source: http://www.jiwire.com/wi-fi-security-home-networks-1.htm
Change your Wireless SSID from linksys (default) to something unique, that doesn't identify your hardware or you. Be aware that crackers use online lists like this one to lookup information that helps them gain access to systems with inadequate security.
    Use WPA/WPA2 not WEP encription
WEP = poor security (easily cracked/hacked)
WPA = good security when used with Strong Passwords - see Perfect Passwords below
    WPA2 = best security
Perfect Passwords - GRC's Ultra High Security - Password Generator
Since the passwords used to generate pre-shared keys are configured into the network only once, and do not need to be entered by their users every time, the best practice is to use the longest possible password and never worry about your password security again.
If you are connecting only 802.11g devices, select “G-Only” from the “Wireless Network Mode” menu. Likewise, choose “B-Only” for 802.11b devices. By selecting G-Only/B-Only, you lock out anyone trying to connect using anything else. Source: http://paininthetech.com/5_minute_wireless_network_security_for_your_home
Wireless SSID Broadcasting. By default it is enabled; assure that it has not been changed. Microsoft recommends that you do not configure access points as non-broadcast (hidden) networks; sources: KB929661, KB907405, KB811427. You will come across articles/posts that recommend disabling this, but this is old school thinking.
Disabling SSID broadcasting will not stop a wireless signal being found, and some wireless clients will not logon to the correct wireless signal without SSID being enabled. Source: http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47120
MAC address filtering. MAC address filtering without WPA or WPA2 is pretty much no security at all. And with WPA or WPA2 and a strong pre-shared key you don’t need it because WPA is considered secure and anyone who hypothetically has the power and knowledge to crack WPA would not be hindered by MAC address filtering to gain access to your WLAN. • Router Locks Up

This WRT54G has locked up twice since being purchased 4 days ago and needs a power reset to bring it back online. When it stops, the unit appears fully functional (front panel lights & web interface) but the connection to the internet is lost.
Wireless is currently disabled and it has a static IP address and is connected to a cable modem.
The only extra configuration is one entry in Applications & Gaming to port forward Remote Desktop (TCP 3389) to 192.168.1.2

Hi, the ISP is TelstraClear in New Zealand www.telstraclear.co.nz
I have a fixed IP of 202.78.149.187 and the router is version 7 with firmware 7.00.1
Previously I had a Watchguard SOHO but it was limiting my connection speed.

  • WRT54G V8 Locks Up!

I am an experienced user and have had a WRT54G V2 for years. On my recommendation, my g/f bought a WRT54G which came with version 8. She used it as a wired router for three weeks with no trouble. She bought a laptop, so I turned on the wireless and after that every few days the router locks up. Once "locked up", there is no internet for any of the computers, wired or wireless, and the router does not respond to 192.168.1.1 for configuration. My solution is to momentarily unplug the power to the router and then it will work for a few more days. To add to this, we bought a second WRT54G V8 for her son and his is doing the same thing! And... I took my WRT54G V2 over to her place and it hums along fine, no lock ups. I took her WRT54G V8 to my place and it started locking up! She has cable, I have DSL. Anyone else have problems with new WRT54G V8 routers locking?
    Thanks!

I'm willing to try anything seeing as there's nothing forthcoming from Linksys .. copied from the link .....
    "Hi,
I bought a WRT54G v6 and since I installed and configured it I've experiencing an intermittent connection in my lan where you can find a notebook wireless connected to the router and a desktop wired to the router by cable.
I'm working and then the network stops, both computers lose signal with the router. The signal come back few seconds later but to work in internet again I have to wait some minutes.
So I contacted the live assistent on Linksys web-site and the agents said to me to do something that I will list here:
    - lower the MTU to 1480, 1470, 1450
    - updated the firmware
    - reflash the firmware
    - reset the router for about 30 seconds
    - do the power cycle
If you don't know what update and reflash the firmware or do the power cycle means you can see the instructions on this pages:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=557&p_created=1084217197&p_sid=btIGUT4i&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=466&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MSZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2210&p_created=1110937569&p_sid=btIGUT4i&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=1650&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MSZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZw
So, I did this things and nothing happens. The problem persisted.
An agent from Linksys told me to replace the device, but I was looking
at this forum and I saw that many people were experiencing the same problem. So, I've been trying to solve the issue by my own. And I think I do.
I noticed that the wireless network is making the router's signal hang.
Yes, It sounds strange, but It's the problem.
I left my desktop computer which is wired to the router working on the internet on a whole night downloading and uploading things, and the problem disappeared.
So, in the other night I left the wireless notebook and the desktop working at the same time. When I woke up I saw that the problem happened again, because the downloads and uploads stopped.
So, the conclusion is that the notebook is crashing the network. And I solved the problem.
If you are experiencing this problem, first do the things that I listed . If nothing works do this.
Enter in the router setup (192.168.1.1). Go to Wireless Tab, and after to the Advanced Wireless Settings. There, set this configuration:
    Beacon Interval: 25
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2304
    RTS Threshold: 2304
    And save.
Finished. Now I think the problem will disappear.
I hope to have helped you who are experiencing this problem.
    Bye"

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • WRT54G Router - Internet connection issues using the Ipod touch

Ok, first - here is my setup. I've got the router hooked into the modem, with the desktop computer hooked directly into the router.  I've got my laptop running off wireless internet, and I've got an ethernet cable connecting through my laptop to an xbox for xbox live connection.  I recently just got an iPod touch, and I've come to realize that whenever I'm on the iPod, it messes with the internet on the desktop computer and on the xbox, but not the laptop really.. it makes the internet really slow, or sometimes it doesn't work at all, especially on the xbox.  Is there anything I can change to make these all work at the same time?  Or is this too many connections or what? Please help. thanx.
(running windows vista home premium, WRT54G router, pretty much beginner status, though I can follow directions easily : ] )
Also, the internet always works on the ipod, it seems as though the ipod is 'taking over' the internet.. it doesn't lose it while in the area, yet the other computers and xbox does at times..
Message Edited by jmaxey0122 on 12-16-2009 05:27 AM

You might be facing the problem, because the Ipod and your Desktop computer must be having the same IP address thats the reason whenever your IPod is connected to your Network, your Desktop must be getting disconnected. Check the IP address of your IPOD and of your Desktop Computer.
First thing which you need to check, if the Physical connections are done properly. Connect the Modem to the Internet Port of the Linksys Router and then Connect the computer to the LAN Port No.1. On your Desktop computer login to the setup page of your Router and click on the Status tab and check "Internet IP address"
If required you can Re-Set your Router and Re-configure all the settings on your Router from the scratch.

  • How do I set up WRT54G router with 4 computers and WVC54GC Wireless Camera

Can anyone please tell me how to set up my Home Network with full security turned on?
I have at least 4 neighbors that show up on my wireless connections list. I have a daughter that loves music and is constantly downloading viruses but only on one wireless connection. The rest of us want to be protected from that computer. My system consists of the following:
    One Linksys WRT54G Router
Two Linksys WMP54G Wireless PCI adapters,
Two Linksys WVC54GC Wireless Cameras  (Possibility four if the 1st two ever work OK.)
Two Linksys LNE100TX PCI Ethernet Cards,
    One HP Ethernet Printer
Three computers were connected by Ethernet cable and one was wireless. I did not change the admin password and I thought everything was working fine for a couple of years until I found that the wireless computer was acting as a “drone” and slowing everything down to a snails pace.  It could even turn itself on.
I changed one of the Ethernet computers to wireless and decided that it might be time to also change the password and increase security.  Setting up security completely shutdown the wireless drone computer. I was OK with that, at least until I can reformat that harddrive.
I then decided while I was at it, I would add a wireless camera (WVC54GC). I set it up using the software and Ethernet cable that came with it. After 6 tries I finally got the camera to work with the cable attached, but it does not work wireless and now none of the other computers connect any more. Is there a limit on how many connections? Should I reset the router and if so, do I disconnect the DSL modem? I’m afraid of the “drone” computer because I found some very bad malware on it. One in particular caused me to replace a hard drive.
I’ve read page after page of network stuff on the Internet and I guess I just don’t know how to ask the right questions. I’m tired of fooling with this.

hi , when u talk about security , are u referring to the "viruses" your daughters PC may be propogating to the rest of the network , or are u referring to external attacks on the router or your wireless PC"s ???
In case u are referring to the "virus" attacks , the best you can do is install a good antivirus software on all PC"s and keep the virus definations updated....
In case u are referring to the wireless security , i'd suggest that your use WPA2 personal. you can select WPA2 by going to the "wireless security" option.
let me know if u need anything more.

  • Linksys WRT54G router--Why doesn't it work with my Macbook?

I have a perfectly functional Apple MacBook (Unibody, late 2008) running Leopard 10.5.6. I have used it to connect to public Wi-Fi but it is unable to connect to my home Linksys WRT54G router. I called Apple Tech Support, and they suggested that I change the wireless channel and/or temporarily remove the WPA encryption. I did both, the computer still could not connect. In System Preferences on the MacBook, it tells me that "AirPort does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet." The tech support guy tried to help, but in the end basically told me that the router just plain might not be compatible with Apple products. (My iPod Touch cannot connect either.)
I can buy a new router, but this one works perfectly for the rest of the computers in the house (PCs) and they're expensive--and there's no guarantee that those will work either.
So: Does anyone know any solutions short of buying a new router that would make my Linksys compatible with my Macbook AND our home PCs? Or, failing that, a good, WPA-encrypted router that WILL work with both?
I have a Snow Leopard disk (I just received the computer on Thursday). Would upgrading to Snow Leopard be of any help? I'm planning on doing it anyway one of these days.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sola Gratia

You are in the wrong forum but I'll try and help anyway. That model of Linksys router has a long history of not getting along with Apple products. That is not to say it will never work, but it does require that you download and install the latest firmware for the exact model of router that you have. There are multiple sub-models of that router so make sure that you get the right one.
Once you have done the firmware update, restart your router and try it again. WPA-psk should work but for troubleshooting purposes, turn off encryption and see if you can get your MacBook and touch working. You might want to use WPA2-psk instead of WPA.
I would hold off on Snow Leopard until you get WiFi working. Nothing like changing to too many things at one time to really mess things up.

  • Win XP SP3 PC wired to WRT54G router repeatedly crashes

I have a Win XP SP3 desktop that is wired (not wireless) to WRT54G router  (v 3.0 router with latest firmware version 4.21.1).
The PC repeatedly freezes when I connect to internet using IE or Firefox and has to be re-booted using power button. The following are the 2 error messages from Event Viewer:
    1) The AEGIS Protocol (IEEE 802.1x) v3.1.6.0 service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified -  netevent.dll. Source of the error is Service Control Manager
    2) The PCASp50 NDIS Protocol Driver service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified - netevent.dll. Source of the error is Service Control Manager.
    Other details:
    1) Vonage adapter also connected to router
    2) This PC used to be connected to same router via a wireless-G adapter WUSB54G. That has been disconnected, Linksys software uninstalled and PC is now wired to router. The problem used to happen at that time also.
    3) Router is setup with WPA-PSK security with TKIP and mode G-only.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am at my wit's end.

I also would like to suggest that you download and experiment with another browser, Google Chrome or Opera and see if they are affected also. Their installation may refresh or reload the missing dll's.

  • WRT54G router IP address is the same as my modem's IP address. how to change the routers IP address?

The broadband modem got broken and the ISP changed it to a new modem. Now my problem is I cannot use the router when they changed the modem. The ISP won't provide support since they didn't provide me with the wireless router. I've read through the forum and found that I had to change my router's IP address. WRT54G router IP address is the same as my modem's IP address, 192.168.1.1. I already changed the local IP address of the router to 192.168.1.2, saved the setting, released and renew the ip address. Now, when I connected my internet modem cable to the router, I cannot connect to the internet. I am able to ping 192.168.1.2 but I cannot connect to the ping 192.168.1.1. Please help me do the proper setup.
    Thanks!

Hello! I solved my problem but I find the solution so weird. After changing the routers IP address to 192.168.1.2, instead of plugging the modem cable on the Internet port of the router, I plugged it in one of the WAN ports. Presto, it worked. Even my wireless connection is also working.

  • Cannot connect Mac ibook to WRT54G router

I have a WRT54G router connected to my desktop. My Dell laptop connects without any problems. Now I am also trying to connect a Mac ibook to the same router. The Airport reads the connection, but it does not accept any passwords. The dropdown of connection options includes Personal WPA, Personal WPA2, Enterprise WPA, and others, but none of them accept my password. I have read some threads about downgrading, but I am concerned that if I make changes to adapt for the Mac, I might lose my Dell connectivity.

Use Firefox or Internet Explorer. Open http://192.168.1.1/ (if you have not changed the LAN IP address of the WRT54G), enter your password (default "admin" ) and you should see the web interface of the router. Click on Wireless. Post the current settings you have there. Then click on Wireless Security and also post the current settings you find there. That will tell us how you have set up the wireless on the router and then we'll see how you correctly set up the iBook for this.
