WRT54G routers losing settings...

I'm seeing some weirdness.
I have two WRT54G routers.
The main one is connected to my cable modem, and pretty much runs with factory defaults - other than the password being changed.
The second one is used to extend my wireless range. It is connected to the first one through one of the main ports (not the internet port) and is configured to use IP 192.168.1.2, and with DHCP turned off.
They work fine. Mostly.
But every once in a while, the modems spontaneously lose their memory and are reset back to factory defaults. Which causes problems, as both modems think they are the ones in charge, and I have to go through and reset them both.
Any idea what is causing it?
I'm running v1.00.6 on both of them.

hi .....only one option here.....upgrade to firmware version 1.01.0 on both WRT54G's

  • Three WRT54G Routers on one subnet

I support a tcp/ip network that has three WRT54G Routers on a cat 5 backbone which are all on one subnet 192.168.2.96/27. There's one WAP54G configured as a wireless repeater for a sales area in the corner of the office where there's no drop. The internet connection is provided by Comcast via cable modem. The office manager purchased the routers because they were cheaper then the WAP54G Access points and the cabling was already in place. There must be a real tight budget there. I configured Router1 (WRT54G) as a gateway to the Cable Modem and enabled DHCP beginning with octal 105 leaving 8 ip addresses for static and 22 for DHCP devices. The other two (Router2 and Router3) WRT54G's I've disabled DHCP and enabled them as Routers instead of Gateways with RIP disabled. The WAP54G Repeater has the wireless MAC Addressed of Router1's in its Repeater settings and has no cable to the network.
Since all DHCP devices on the network have its default gateway set as Router1, everyone is able to get on the internet. While I was configuring the network I noticed that it didn't matter if I made Router2 and 3 routers or gateway as everyone appeared to be working okay and were able to get on the internet but in the setup it says to enable Router for all devices not directly connected to an internet connection. I'm guessing that this might make a difference only if I had two different subnets in the office. Since Router2 and 3 are basically dumb to the internet gateway, they can't see anything beyond their own ip address and just pass packets back and forth almost like a repeater.
I guess my question here would be, is there any advantage of using the WAP54G over the WRT54G as an access point when wired to cat 5?

I guess you have connected the WRT54Gs through their LAN ports and the internet port is empty. That's the way how you use them as access points.
If you connect them that way the gateway or router mode is irrelevant. The mode only works between the LAN and WAN. They did not design the WRT really for use as access point with an open internet port and therefore this is not documented in the help file. I would leave the setting on gateway as then it is a setting less to change back in case you must use it as gateway later again. If you use router mode, make sure RIP is disabled. The router is not working as router thus it needs no routing information...
Regarding your question: the answer is only the obvious one: except for the more extended configuration options in the WAP I don't think their is an advantage for either one.

  • Losing Settings Over Time

Over the last 3 days or so, I've been slowly losing settings on my G4. On Day 1, I turned on the computer to find that my mailboxes weren't showing up in Mail, although a search found both mailboxes still under my user folder. On Day 2, the computer kept trying to re-install MSN Messenger and AIM, as if it didn't see the already installed version. On Day 3, despite all music files being still in the iTunes folder, my iTunes library showed as damaged and did not see the files. Its moving progressively.
I feel like there's something wrong with the hard drive. I'm scared to even turn the computer on today, except to backup all of my music and documents in case it continues like this. Any advice? I know nothing about how to deal with this... I've tried Disk Utility verify/repair to no avail. My next plan of action was to back up my music and documents, then restore the hard drive. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to do.

I really dont agree that it "hinders our ability to configure cards". If you are a gamer then you will most definatley be thankful for the audio console. It is there so we can get rid of all the programs bar this one simple program and still have all functionality.
For example; all i need to work my sound card is the drivers and the audio console. It is not a redundant program it is there to give the end user a choice and more flexability when it comes to the choice of what to install.

  • N95 losing 'settings' after FW update

    Hi
I lost some data after updating FW recently. The lost data includes:
    Saved GPS locations.
    Call log
    Active standby apps settings
    and so on.
Could I have saved these settings somehow when I backed up/sync with the PC or do I have to accept the loss when I upgrade FW?
    Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid you have to accept losing settings and data with any upgrade the firmware. Not sure you could save the settings in any way other than perhaps making a note (on paper) of what your settings are and which active standby app's you prefer. I may be wrong but I've never been able to do so.

  • Network security - using two wireless WRT54G Routers

I have lots of  ports on my router open for numerous family software applications that are all on one computer and I would like to isolate these risky activities from the rest of my network.
I recently read I could use two routers, plug one router into another,  assign each a different starting IP address (such as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1). Then attach my at-risk PCs--to the router that's directly connected to my broadband modem, and all  other computers to the second router.
Internet traffic to and from the unsafe PC area would then not reach my secure subnetwork at all.
I currently use a WRT54G V5...does buying a second one and using it as described make sense? It sounds like a rather inexpensive way to add security to my network.
I assume the second router gets connected from it's internet jack to one of the port jacks on the first router? Is there anything else that would need to be changed or set in either router to make this work?
Can I please ask if u respond to try and keep your response at a level that a non expert could understand.....I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks for everyones advice!

Thanks for the quick response....it is disappointing to see that I would lose the ability to share files......I  assume this is also true for printers as well??? Do you have another solution that you think would do a better job?
Anyway I did get a rather detailed response on how to make it work and it's in a fashion that even I could understand.
I thought I would share it in case anyone else had a interest to isolate a computer.
    Thanks
With regards to your concern, the setup that you suggested does address your concern. With this setup, we are somehow creating two networks on your location. In this manner, the computer that needs the set of ports will not be part of the network of the second router thus, it will not be able to affect the other computers.
With this type of setup, we will just have to leave the current settings of the WRT54G v5 (as long as its working properly this time). All we have to configure is the second router wherein we will have to change its LAN IP Address and also, configure its wireless settings in order for the said router to provide wired and wireless connection to all computers connecting to it. Please allow me to give you the steps.
Once we have the second router available, please connect one of the computers straight to the second router using one of the four ports (Ethernet port). With the configuration, only the second router and the computer will be connected with each other.
Before setting up the second router, I suggest that we do a hard reset on the router to make sure that it is on default settings and that we have a stable connection during the setup.
Here’s how to do a reset:
    1. Locate the reset button of the router at the back panel.
    2. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds using a pen or a paper clip.
    3. Release the reset button.
    Configuring the Second Router:
    1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
    2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type 192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go.
    3. The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.
    4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
    5. Go to Wireless Tab.
    6. Change SSID (e.g. Vic or your name or last name).
    7. Change channel to 11.
    8. Hit save Settings.
    9. Click on the sub tab Wireless Security.
    10. Set the Security Mode to WEP.
Using pass phrase Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits):
    1. Type a pass phrase.
    2. Click Generate.
    3. Copy key1 on a piece of paper (10hex character).
    4. Hit Save Settings.
For using manual key entry Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits)
    1. Under Key 1 type a 10 digit character from A-F and 0-9 (e.g.: A0B3F58C9E, 0123456789, ABCDEFABCD).
    2. Hit Save Settings.
    3. Click on the Setup Tab.
    4. Change the Local IP Address to "192.168.2.1".
    5. Click “Save Settings”.
    Finishing the Connection:
    1. Shut down all computers.
    2. Unplug the power from the back of both routers.
    3. Unplug the power from the modem.
    4. Wait for 30 second.
    5. Connect the WRT54G v5 router (using its Internet Port) to the Cable Modem.
    6. Connect the WRT54G v5 (using one of the four Ethernet ports) to the second router (using its Internet/WAN port).
    7. Power up the modem.
    8. Wait for the lights to stop blinking.
    9. Power up the routers.
    10. Start up your computer.

  • Two WRT54G routers One DSL Connection?

Thank you for reading my request.
Situation:  I have one Internet connection and I have need of two networks.  One filtered with OpenDNS and the other unfiltered.  I have a Speedstream DSL router provided by ISP for connecting to Internet.  I have two WRT54G's and would like to utilize them to form two networks.  The Speedstream is a router with a gateway address of 192.168.1.254.
From that Speedstream (only one network plug) I would like to go to a 5port switch.  From that switch, I would like to configure the two WRT's to be two different networks (one using OpenDNS settings for filtering) with one having a 192.168.1.x address scheme and the other (no Internet filtering) having a 192.168.10.x scheme.  Both would have DHCP enabled for their networks and the Speedstream would have DHCP disabled.  There is not a need (at this point) to have the networks communicate.
Is this possible and if so, is there some semblence of a walkthrough for it?
Thank you again for reading my request.

Yes, this setup is possible. As long as the modem will be able to support more than one connection, then you may connect the 2 routers thru the switch.
The only thing that I see as a possible concern is about double NATting. If ever there is a need for you to open any ports in the router, then you will have to do double port forwarding or open a port in both the router and modem.

  • How to "forget" a routers password settings N8

    Hi!
I have recently encountered a problem which I believe is caused by two routers having the exact same name (being the exact same router model as well), but different passwords. As a result of this I believe the phone tries to connect to the second router with the password of the first.
I think this might be the problem, as I managed to get my sisters phone access the internet through the current network by "forgetting" the old routers settings and then reconnect with a new password (possible with android OS).
Does anyone know a way for doing this for a Symbian^3 phone? That being resetting the phones WiFi-profiles, so that you have to re-enter the router password. So far I haven't been able to find any way of doing this.
    Thanks for your help!

  • WRT54G blank router settings page, then the whole network goes down

    Alright, heres the setup:
    (1) DSL Modem
    (1) WRT54G Router
    (1) Desktop WinXP Pro SP2 machine, hardwired to router
    (2) WinXP Pro SP2 laptops, wireless - one with built-in wireless, one with a Linksys WPC11 Instant Wireless Network Adapter, version 3.
    (1) WinXP Media Center SP2 laptop, wireless
    (1) Ubuntu Personal Edition - "Feisty Fawn" 7.04 laptop, wireless
The router has been set up to use WPA-TKIP encryption on channel 6 with an always-on PPPoE connection; it also has an IP of http://192.168.2.1 to avoid an IP conflict with the DSL Modem. DHCP Server is enabled with default settings, MAC Address Clone is disabled, and Operating Mode is set to Gateway. Access is set to allow both B and G, as one of the WinXP Pro laptops is an older model Toshiba that only recognizes the B protocol (that's the one with the WPC11 card).
    Here's the problem:
Initially, the setup works flawlessly. All computers are able to see the SSID, connect to the network, and connect to the internet. The connection is fine, doesn't slow down, and is overall pretty healthy. All computers are able to access http://192.168.2.1, and are prompted with the username/password prompt, can change settings, port forwarding, etc.
Now, wait a few days. Usually about a week.
First, the Ubuntu laptop starts to get spotty with it's connection to the internet. After about 10 minutes, the connection to the network starts to fail. Sometimes it will see the SSID, sometimes it won't - and it's not a matter of moving the laptop. It stays pretty much on the same desk and acts as a desktop 98% of the time. If you try to access http://192.168.2.1 nothing happens. No username/password prompt, no "access denied" message. Rebooting the machine doesn't improve the situation. Manually entering in the SSID and password don't work, either.
At this point, all of the other computers are still able to access the internet. However, trying to access http://192.168.2.1 with *any* of the other machines fails. Even if I try to access it with the wired desktop machine, there is no prompt, no error messages, just a blank white page with a "done" status in both Firefox and IE.
After about a day or two of this, all other machines except for the wired desktop computer will cease to see the SSID and all connections to the network fail. No network access, no internet access. The only machine still connected to the network and the internet is the wired desktop machine.
    What I've tried:
At this point, I usually power cycle the Linksys router - and viola, back to normal.
As far as settings-side, I've tried changing just about every setting I can that wont break the system; I've tried changing channels, changing the encryption, changing the IP of the router... and nothing seems to fix the problem.
I've also looked at just about every forum, posting, help-reference, and how-to, and I can't seem to find a solution to the problem, or even what's really happening to cause it.
Normally, I wouldn't take issue with having to restart the router. It's not a big issue for me, personally. But I set up this network for someone else, and at the end of this month I am moving, so I would like to fix and resolve the issue so that they don't have to restart the router every week. They are not very tech-savvy people and I don't want to make things more complicated than they have to be. At the least it's a minor inconvenience, and at the most it's a disaster and a call every week from them asking how to fix it.

I have this exact same issue. I'm using the WRT54G v8 with Firmware Version: v8.00.2 (latest version)
The log feature of mine was turned on, so I've turned it off.
As for the P2P, 2 of the 5 computers connected to my network are using it. Are there any suggestions to resolve/help the P2P problem?
I've also noticed that when the 'no setup page' problem happens, if I do an LAN port scan of the router, port 80 is no longer open. Very wierd.
After chatting with the Linksys Tech support, they say to take it back to the store (although I'll try these options first)

  • WRT54G v2 Router settings won't stick.

I recently replaced my WRT54G v2 with a new router because it on occasion it wouldn't connect to my DSL modem. However I still want to do some things with the old router, but I can no longer get any settings to stick. Whenever I change a setting and hit apply, I get a blank page (instead of the usual "Settings are saved" message) and nothing I change stays. I've tried doing a hard reset to no avail. I've also tried upgrading the firmware but instead of it working I now get a "The connection was reset while the page was loading." message from Firefox every time it begins to upgrade.
Ans suggestions how to fix this?

  • Cascade 2 EA2700 routers, what settings

I have two EA2700 routers that I'm cascading.  I have the main router with DHCP on and the second router with DHCP off.  The second router is connected to the main router via the LAN port.  I seem to be getting very poor speed and even connectivity errors when devices are connected to the second router wirelessly.  What other settings need to be changed on the second router?  I haven't changed anything on it other than setting DHCP off.  Also, both main and secondary router have the same wireless network name but many of my devices seem to be connected to the second one since it's closer.
Any help or suggestions?  As of now, my wireless connection is basically useless.

Try to upgrade the router’s firmware and then reset the router afterwards. This would eradicate any bugs from the router. You can actually change the router’s wireless settings or better yet, consider using different SSIDs for each router. Use a wifi analyzer tool like http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ to select a non-overlapping channel to your router. You can also relocate the router to a more central and elevated location for a better signal coverage. Another option is to set the 2nd router to bridge. You can refer to this link: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=24583 for more information.

I'm having problems with my Messaging and Social Networking Widgets losing all of their settings after a reboot (power off/on).
Is anyone else seeing this? Is there a fix for this issue?

Try doing a phone reset by removing your battery for 5 seconds then place it back in and power your phone on.  You may have to add the settings back. Hi,
I'm running Windows 7 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T510. Since a few weeks, the Energy Manager is losing it's settings and reverts back to the default. This mostly happens after my laptop woke up after standby. I change it then back to the settings I prefer, but doing this every time I use my laptop is really annoying.
    How can I fix this?

Does it happen consistently only after sleep?  Have you installed anything on all the machines recently.

  • Issues with WRT54G routers & adapters

I have a WRT54G router and  WUSB 11 adapters. Initially when the wireless network was setup, everything worked fine. My DSL modem started giving trouble and Bellsouth came and replaced it with a Netopia.
None of my wireless desktop will connect now. They recognise my Network but will not connect. Efforts by the Linksys Tech produce no better results. I changed the Adapters but same results with new ones.
When I try to connect to my network I'm getting this message
"Windows is unable to connect to selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try to connect again."  Did that too, dozens of times.
Any asssistance to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

Hi… Well I don’t see any reason why you should get this issue by changing the Modem. If you are getting this error, it means you have changed some of the wireless settings on this router. I would suggest you to go a Firmware Upgrade first, then reset the router and reconfigure it properly. Now try to connect to these new wireless settings. You should not get this issue.

Can I uninstall 4.0 Beta 12 and reinstall 3.6 without losing my settings (bookmarks, add-ons, etc.)?

When you uninstall Firefox make sure that you '''do not''' select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data", this will then leave you Firefox user data intact (bookmarks, passwords, preferences, cookies etc). This data will then be used when you install another version of Firefox.

When I get power outage in my area, the Linksys E-2000 loses all the settings and goes back to factory defaults! The router is plugged to a good quality surge protection power bar.

    Joe

if you have it connected to a surge protector or a power-delay device, then this should not happen. anyway, just make sure you know how to power cycle your devices properly after a power outage:
    1. unplug all networking devices suring power outage.
    2. after the outage, turn on modem first.
    3. turn on router.
    4. turn on computers.
