WRT54G Security setup

I hope no one minds a question from an amateur.
In the setup for my WRT54G, on the "Wireless" tab, under "Wireless Security," I'm not sure what to choose from the dropdown box for "Security Mode." It defaults to "Disable" and the choices are WPA-Preshared Key, WPA RADIUS, RADIUS and WEP.
Should I choose one of these options? Am I running a security risk by leaving this set to the default?
It appears that an explanation for this option was left out of the manual on the CD. The topics go from "Wireless Settings" on one page directly to "Wireless MAC Filter" on the next. Dang.
Thanks in advance.

In answer to some of your original questions:
You are taking a risk if you don't secure your wireless system.  If your wireless is not secured, anyone in the area can log into your router and use your DSL line.  At a minimum, this wastes your bandwidth.  At a maximum, someone could send spam, visit child porn sites, distribute viruses, and give away copyrighted music  ---  all from a DSL account with your name on it!  So my advice is ... secure your system.
RADIUS is a system designed for businesses, and requires special software, so home users do not normally use this.
The general rule is that you should use the highest level of security that is supported by all the devices on your wireless network.

  • I changed my WRT54G security settings from WPA to WEP

I changed my WRT54G security settings from WPA to WEP and now one of my latops (Dell 5100) will not connect wirelessly. It is using a linksys wireless-B notebook adapter. I am at a loss at how to reconnect this to my wireless network.

Go to the setup page of the router on the wired computer and click on the Wireless tab, check the network name(SSID),change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462 GHz,Keep the SSID broadcast enable and click on save settings...Click on the subtab Wireless Security and change the Security mode to WEP or WPA as per your requirement. If you are using WEP then, note down the KEY1 as the network key(case sensitive)...
Now,on the laptops, delete the preferred network and then, try to connect the Wireless Network.

  • Security Setup not working

    Hi,
As a part of security setup we have done the following things:
    - Users created and assigned as members of groups. One group is created per entity.
    - Groups have been provisioned for the application and given security class access
    - Security classes have been created and attached to metadata. for e.g, all entities have been attached a Sec class in properties.
    - In application settings, Node Security = Entity, Security for Entities is Checked, Enable Metadata Sec Filtering is also checked.
Even after this, the security setup doesnt seem to be working. A user with minimal provision (only Data Form Writeback from Excel) and no security class access is also able to see all the entities, also other forms, grids, etc which have been attached diff security classes. He is able to edit the forms and grids.
Can anyone help out as to what is it that we are missing?

What role(s) do the users have? Any user with the Administrator role bypasses class access checking and is assumed to have full access to everything. No other role provides this bypass.
Editing forms and grids has nothing to do with Entity security. If the forms and grids have no class assigned to them, they use the [Default] class which I suggest all users have All rights to anyway. If there are grids/forms you do not want users to change, you should assign a specific class to them, other than [Default].
Enable Metadata security filtering should restrict users from seeing the members for which they have None access to, but as long as they have Read or All access, they will see the members in a pick list.

  • Security Setup

    Hi,
We are having HFM used for reporting and consolidation.
    Two Specific issues/questions
    1) We are having seperate Development, UAT and production environments. However the security setup/AD groups for all three environments are same. We cannot create different security groups in three different environments as it will affect meta data level changes. So the issue is that , person having UAT environment is also able to access the production system, as AD groups for security class are same. Is there a way we can diffentiate the security of three different environments?
    2) HFM offers application adminsitrator roles. However, we are having 3 different team:
    A) One performing change management such as meta data level changes
    B)Second one performing security
C)Third one performing maintainance actiivites such as dispensation, bypass, validation tolerane limit load excahgne rate.
Is there a way we can segregate these responsibilites by setting up different access/roles for the users.
Your help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
In regards to question #1 :
Option a - Use Native Groups. If you were using Native Groups as opposed to the AD groups, you could keep everyone assigned to the same groups and simply have different levels of access between the apps. A lot of systems will use Native Groups with external directories (i.e. Active Directory) for users. This probably isn't something of interest since you already have everything in AD and would be a lot of hassle to rework....
The other options I propose really depend on what exactly are you trying to accomplish in DEV vs PROD in regards to security. They are somewhat hackish but would solve your issue....
Option b - If you want everyone to have full access to everything in DEV as opposed to more limited access in prod, give the WORLD built in group access to all of your security classes in DEV only.
Option c - If you want everyone to have the same entity / account access just a different level (i.e. Read to Write), then you can just extract the production security file and replace all the security class access items from Read to All, etc.
Option d / e - If you want to give people different account / entity access as opposed to level of access, this is a bit trickier because any moves you make in AD would apply for all of the apps.... I would think this wouldn't be that common and maybe you only need this for a couple people? For the few instances of this, I think the best bet optiosn are : d.) create a Native Group and put them in that with the proper security class access. e.) Assign the user directly to the security class with the proper access in the environment. Security class access is not contained in AD and the changes would not automatically propagate..... If you have to do this for a "ton" of users, it wouldn't be much fun though.
In regards to question #2 -
    A) - First of all, if someone has the HFM client or a text editor and access to the metadata file, anyone can make the changes. Your best bet is to control the extracting and loading aspect of this. The 'Load System' role will control who can load metadata to HFM.
    B) - Provisioning Manager will allow changes to user access to the App
    C) Not sure what you're looking for here. Exchange rates would be a data load so they would need to be able to load data to the system. This sounds like more of an Account / Entity access item so you would need to make sure the user has proper security class access in HFM.

  • Security setup operations failed: creating system keys

I have just downgraded my T60 laptop from Vista to windows xp using the lenovo CD's.
Everything seems to be working well, except that each time I boot up the computer, the lenovo security setup software runs.  If I follow the menus all the way through, I get to the following error on the last screen:
"your security settings have been configured however, one or more setup operations failed: creating system keys"
There was also a message that previously briefly flashed during the bootup (on the "bios" screen?) which stated that the system was designed to use fingerprints to protect something or other, but this was not enabled.  However:  I then ran all updates for windows xp and for lenovo drivers etc.  This message has now gone away (and unfortunately I didn't write it down).
I'm guessing the failure to "create system keys" results in the software running each time I boot up.
Another possibility:  I have not yet enabled the symantec security, as I intend to uninstall it and use other virus protection software.  Could this be causing the"failure to create system keys"?
(The fingerprint reader works fine, and reads my fingerprint at the windows logon screen.)
**UPDATE**:  uninstalled symantec security software, and this had no effect.

  • Security Setup Wizard keeps appearing on startup

For some reason, the Security Setup Wizard keeps appearing everytime I logon.  There seems to be an error when it is completing the last steps of the process.  I enter all the information requested and get to the last page and I get an error message that it cannot create the "system keys."  What are the system keys and how do I fix this error?
If I cannot fix the error so that the wizard can complete its tasks, how do I prevent it from running on startup in the first place?  I checked the run list in the registry but it doesn't seem to be listed there.

    Hi sclexman,
Thank you for your good instructions and prompt reply.  I don't often see such patient or helpful people outside of the ThinkPad community!
My system has been running beautifully for well over a year.
I am running Windows XP Professional on my IBM ThinkPad T60p.
Typing something like ThinkPad "Security Setup Wizard" into Google with quotation marks, you will get better results.
I literally get exactly what is described above by the other people.
My problem is the Wizard which keeps popping up every time the computer restarts, but the "system keys" step is where the wizard gets stuck, so I thought that might be the cause of the problem.
I put off setting up my security software with fingerprint reader for years, and I just got around to it yesterday.  The wizard popped up every time I started up since I got it, but when I went through the wizard and set everything up, it finally stopped popping up.
Shortly after, I  went poking through the advanced settings of the ThinkVantage Client Security Solution program and accidentally clicked "Reconfigure security settings".  This brought up the same wizard again, and made me re-enter all of my passwords and security questions, which was quite a hassle.  This is the time it failed at the "system keys" part of setup; the first time took longer, but it was successful.
My big reward at the end of this was supposed to be the wizard leaving me alone at startup, but he will not stop his familiar haunt!
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
          Thomas
Security Setup Wizard that won't stop popping up:
Wizard after initial successful completion.  If done over, it won't get past the second step.
I don't want to try creating my own system key as your WikiHow link describes, as I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing, and I don't want to actually break my system's security!  Everything is working perfectly now security-wise, except for this pop-up window!!!
    P.S.
I took so long to reply because when I tried to change my e-mail address to the one I check most often, I was completely locked out of my account.  I did not receive any confirmation e-mail no matter how many times I clicked re-send.  Today I changed it back to my Hotmail account, and it came within five minutes, so I'm back in. Since Hotmail works, I am guessing that the spam filter on my school's e-mail servers is cranked up too high, rather than any problem on Lenovo's part.

  • WRT54G Wireless security setup

I'm having some trouble setting up wireless for this router.  I set up WEP and entered a passphrase.  When i try to connet to the network it asks for the passphrase. When i enter the phrase it says the network security key is not valid.  Any ideas on how to fix this.  Tx in advance

With WEP, you must enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router)  into your computer, not the WEP password or passphrase.

  • Wrt54gs & secure easy setup.

For some time I had problems getting my router to see my WUSB54GS but after a couple of months  laying in the wardrobe I decided to dust it down and try again.
reluctantly after a few hours it gave up and let me connect my two PCs together.  HAPPY DAYS.  The Internet was a bit slow on the second PC but it was working.  this PC could see and view the shared folders on the other but alas it couldnt see this one.
I persisted until this morning when suddenly the 2nd PC could not connect.  I tried everything but it could see 3 or 4 other networks but not it's own.
I eventually traced it down to the fact that the SSID was changed and the encryption method and key.  How did it change overnight with both PCs off?
I ended up running the installation software again but when it asked for easy secure to be pressed then the lights all flashed, the yellow LED went out and now refuses to come on again!  the USB device says that the easy secure is not available.
What have I done?  I'm used to working on PCs but networking is relatively new to me.  Switching firewalls off only reduced the internet to an absolute crawl and they still couldnt see each other.  all I wanted was a wifi connection to allow me to transfer files between PCs and maybe even run a LAN to game with but it's getting so difficult that I'm once again thinking of the wardrobe again or better still eBay.
    TIA.
    Robin

That means the SES feature of your router is active. Your router wireless settings are randomly generated by the router and not personalized. For example, your wireless network name (SSID) might be linksys_SES_187498 ......

  • Instructions for setting WRT54GS security to WPA2? Can't find them anywhere.

    Hi,
I'm an amateur at this, so please excuse this load of ignorant questions.
I have 2 PC clients, both Dell Dimensions 3.2GHz 1GB RAM, Wireless-G adapters. OS is Windows XP SP2
The router is a Linksys WRT54GS. I'm using the wireless ports only, at least when I'm not modifying the security settings. Then I use a temporary cable to connect one of the PC's to the router.
I also have a TiVo DVR series 3 with a wireless adapter.
The router came with a copy of Linksys Advisor. When I ran this software I was able to set the security level to WPA-Personal. However I could find no option to set the level to WPA2.
I know the TiVo supports WPA2 because I saw the option when I was configuring it for WPA-personal.
    My question(s):
Why doesn't EasyLink Advisor have an option to set the security level to WPA2? Is it just deficient, or does it check to see if the client PCs support WPA2 and disable the option if they don't?
How would I go about checking if my PCs support WPA2?
Finally, if I have to set the security to WPA2 manually, what is the procedure for doing this?
It's pretty easy to see how this can be done on the router's little web server pages; but as soon as I set the security to WPA2 there, I'm going to lose wireless connections to the PCs and I won't be able to access the router.
I know I can get there via a cable connection, but then what do I do? How do I set up my clients for WPA2?
What's a real pain about all this is that the EasyLink Advisor gives hints on how to optimize performance on secured wireless systems. It advises going to WPA2! But its Wizard doesn't give the option to do that. Its offline help file is minimal - it just says "use the wizard" and that's it.
The online help describes how to manually configure WPA but not WPA2. And the instructions for WPA are incomplete. They explain how to set up the router, but then do not explain how to use the enccryption keys when reconnecting client PCs. They just say to select the SSID in the wireless icon's connect menu, then click on connect. Where does the key go?
Thanks for your time in reading this,
    Big Al Mintaka

First of all, Windows XP SP2 can do WPA2, however it requires a patch.   Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=917021 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Additionally, be sure to give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
As to why EasyLink Advisor works the way it does - I just don't know.
To setup WPA2, you will first need to patch Windows XP, then, using a computer that is wired to the router, go into the router and change the encryption to "WPA2 - personal"  with  "AES".  Reboot modem and router.  You are correct that you will now loose your wireless connections until you update the settings in your wireless devices.
Next go into your computers and likewise change the encryption to "WPA2 - personal"  (= WPA2 = PSK2 ).   (Note:  You do not necesarily need to specify "AES" in your computers (or Tivo), but if you are given a choice between TKIP and AES, choose AES.)
To find these settings for your computers, go to the wireless software in your computer, and go to "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ).  There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network  (this will clear any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and enter your network info (SSID, encryption, and key). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.
You will need to check the Tivo manual for how to change the Tivo to WPA2.

  • WRT54G Wireless Setup page won't load and other issues.

Well I have had quite the mess the last 24 hours. I'll start from the beginning and attempt to spell out the issues I am having. I have had this router for 4 years or so and have never had a problem.
I recently purchased a PS3 and started using the wireless feature that it offeres. Well I was having problems staying connected and was running in to IP address conflicts with my laptop. So I thought I would cure that by moving the router to the ps3 and using a wired connection for its internet. So that is what I did and that is when the problems started snowballing!!  After I got the router moved and everything set up, all seemed well at first.
Shortly thereafter I realized I was still getting IP conflicts. So i did some research and saw where I could dedicate an address for the ps3 and also change some of the wireless settings on the router homepage. I previously had never password protected my network. I'm in a rural area and there aren't many people around that would be trying to get on it. But I figured since I was there I would rename the network and password protect it and all of that. Well that didn't help either. I was still having problems.
I then did all of the resets. Online, on the unit and also a power cycle. So I was back to square one with the settings at this point. So today I noticed that my connection would go from its norm of 54mbps down to1 and then lose connection. I did the resets and restarts and all of that, to no avail. Then it got to the point where it wouldn't connect at all. I checked the actual connection by connecting my computer directly to the modem and it worked flawlessly. So I know it is a router problem. I also tried using 2 seperate laptops and they both responded the same.
I think part of the issue I had then was that the modem and router were on my entertainment center and weren't very high and were in a shelf. Also, my surround sound receiver does use a wireless connection to 2 of its speakers. I didn't know the proper placement of a router until I had this problem. Now that it is back in its previous location the connection seems to be normal, although once in the last hour I did drop down to 1mbps and have to disconnect and reconnect. But it hasn't happened again so far.
However, I am unable to access the wireless page on the router setup page. I did yesterday but it won't load today. On either computer. So I am unable to change the name of my network or assign a password or change any other wireless setting. And again, I've tried every reset method and it still don't work.
Also, does anyone have any advice on the conflicting IP addresses with the ps3? They sent me an email stating that it may be a port or firewall issue? After doing some online research it seems this particualr router has had a lot of problems getting along with the ps3.
I hope I haven't put in too much information but I was just trying to make sure I had any questions I could think of answered ahead of time. I've tried about every avenue I could already. I tried the chat help and was told I didn't qualify and was sent to the phone assistance who after a half hour realized I didn't qualify for that help either. So, here I am!!! Thanks ahead of time!

Make sure that there is no static IP address on any of your computer. You can assign a static IP address on Play station.
Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable.
Download t he latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer.
Open the setup page of the router. Go to Administration tab and click on Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on your router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Change the MTU size on the router to 1365.
Go to Wireless tab and change the wireless network name and channel to 11. Also change the wireless security settings.
