WRT54G Slow with WPA

I recently purchased a WRT54G (v8) to replace my existing router and WAP54G (v2) access point and am seeing a significant slowdown when using WPA Personal security.
I have the WRT54G connected to the cable modem - a Linksys BEFCMU10 (v4). The bandwidth limits for the connection are ~20 Mbps (actually 22 million bps) down and ~2 Mbps (2.2 million bps) up. All of the tests I performed use md.speedtest.rcn.net, which is 3 hops from the laptop I used for testing. I am also in the same room as the wireless device.
With the WRT54G, I tested using WPA, WEP, and no encryption with the following speeds (in Mbps):
unsecured: 18.14 down/1.95 up
WEP: 16.70 down/2.11 up
WPA: 0.68 down/1.04 up
I then connected the WAP54G to the WRT54G via cable and connected wirelessly to the WAP54G (using a different SSID). In this setup, my results were:
unsecured: 18.54 down/ 2.09 up
WEP: 18.12 down/ 2.07 up
WPA: 18.77 down/ 2.06 up
Finally, connecting the laptop to the WRT54G via cable resulted in speeds of 18.77 down/2.12 up.
The results seems to rule out everything I can think of - the cable provider, the laptop having a problem with WPA, and interference, since I get essentially full performance with all configurations except when using WPA on the WRT54G.
I have not changed any of the default settings on the WRT54G except the SSID and security settings. I have confirmed that I have the latest (and only) version of the firmware and have tried resetting the device without luck.
Any suggestions for ways to resolve this issue using WPA security with the WRT54G would be appreciated. Thanks,
Bill

Try to reflash the firmware...u can get the firmware from www.linksys.com/download ... after the firmware upgrade , reset the router and reconfigure it ..

  • Linksys WRT54GS and AX WDS with WPA

I have researched everything in these forums and I thank all for their hard work. Am I to conclude that if I want to use the AX as a bridge (WDS) that I can only use WEP encryption? I tried following the instructions with WPA and when I plug the AX back in, after the cycle time it goes green for about 5-7 seconds then starts to flash yellow. What are my options?
If I by the new Airport 802.11n will it help? I know I won't be able to access the n speed since I am only core duo and not core2 Duo but I really want to make this bridge happen on a secure network. Any other options? I am trying to provide secure internet access for my home entertainment system (Kenwood) over a wireless network since there is no RJ45 plug nearby.

Anyone have any ideas? Anyone familiar if the Alchemy firmware upgrade will allow me to do this?
Is my only option to downgrade to WEP security? Client mode with WPA works fine....but I would really like WPA for the WDS.

  • Slower connection with WPA-PSK

Hi, I'm new to Apple and the whole Apple discussion board.
I recently converted to Mac and have one of the new 20" Intel iMacs. I looked through the available discussions but none of them quite addressed my issue:
I recently received a new 2Wire router from ATT-Yahoo DSL. I have it connected by ethernet cable directly to my old PC, and my Mac connects wirelessly via Airport.
For security reasons, I tried to switch my encryption from WEP (which was the default) to WPA (WPA-PSK is what actually showed up as the option on the 2wire site), and when I did, the wireless connection was dramatically slower. So slow that I couldn't stream music from sites like rhapsody. When I switched back to the WEP default code, the problem seemed to correct itself.
    1) Is there something I needed to adjust as well, either on the Mac or on the 2wire site, when I changed the encryption to WPA, to avoid the slow-down?
    2) How great is the security advantage of WPA over WEP? I've configured the settings so that my wireless network doesn't appear automatically on other people's computers.
I'm new to the wireless game as well. Thanks for anybody's help to the above.

    Hi
The same happened on my old notebook.
I was not able to establish the WLan connection for longer than 1min with WPA encryption.
I have downloaded the newest Atheros driver and updated everything.
Everything works fine with WEP but not WPA.
Then I have disabled the Windows own configuration option and use the Atheros client utility. Now everything works fine!
I would recommend using the Intel Proset utility and check all possible settings!

On the back, it says only Model No. WRE54G,
    Serial No. MGB004A25987.
They bought this article in Nov 2004.
Can I still upgrade the Firmware so I can use WPA-encryption.

yes .. you can upgrade the firmware of the wre54g...

  • Macbook Pro/linksys wrt54g slow wireless/wired network connection solution.

I was pulling my hair out looking for a solution for this and it did not seem anyone had too much luck here. Hopefully this will help you all...
    Setup:
    - Macbook Pro, Mac mini, 2 windows boxes (not mine), 1 linux box
    - Linksys WRT54G v6 with dd-wrt installed. This solution should work with the standard WRT54G firmware.
    Symtoms:
    - All other computers performed fast on internet speed tests and on network transfers.
    - Macbook Pro Internet connection was slow (40KB/s on both the wired and wireless network using wpa)
    - Macbook Pro internal connection was slow (2MB/s on both the wired and wireless network using wpa)
Things I tried to resolve this:
    - Disable IP v6 (no effect)
    - Set DNS Servers field to the dns servers as reported by the router. (Increased the initial speed but this quickly decreased making it useless... not to mention impractical)
    Thing that resolved my issue.
    - Disabled STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) on the router. In the DD-WRT it is towards the top of the Setup tab. I'm not sure where it is on the default firmware sorry.
    Hope this helps someone

    Darin,
You're right - there are a lot of issues about MBP WiFi. I think there's a major problem with it.
If there was a ..."major problem with it" you would see more complaints than wifi just being among the top 10 discussion items in a trouble shooting forum. There are millions of MBP users many of whom, like myself, use wifi every day without issue.
Your statement "They exchanged it for a new machine. Worked fine in the store - but when I got it home, I was still getting very slow speeds." would lead one to suspect maybe interference from some source or a configuration issue rather than a "major problem".
You probably already tried changing the channel, resetting your router, changing the security scheme, elimination possible sources of interference, separating your components (router, computer, external monitor, ...), etc. but maybe starting over with a default configuration will help isolate the problem.

  • Scanning VERY slow with HP C4380 via WiFi

    Hi there,
Since leopard (now 10.6.3) scanning is really terribly slow with my C4380 via WiFi, it actually takes about an hour (NO JOKE) to scan a page on 600dpi. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG.
Can't find any solution anywhere..., drives me mad, help me out pls!
    Daniel

Go into your computer and see what the Wireless Network Settings such as Security Type (WPA, WPA2, WEP etc), Data Encryption (AES, PSK, TKIP etc) and what mode is the router using 802.11 d, g or n. PlayBook prefers WPA or WPA2, AES Encryption, Mode g. It does not support Mode n with TKIP. Also try a reboot of your router.
On your PB tap the wifi icon, tap connect manually, enter the same Security type setting as in the router, select dual band, check auto obtain IP Address, check Allow Inter Access Point Handover and enter the network key. Reboot the PB .Try these suggestings and report back.

  • IPad WiFi works only with WPA/TKIP, not WPA2/AES

My iPad (like so many others) stopped connecting to my Linksys WRT54G router (which like everyone else's connects fine with every other device, including non-iOS 4 iPhones). The whole reset/restart/restore dance with the iPad/router/cable modem was performed to no avail. By sheer desperation, security protocols were changed, and that's what finally worked.
The protocol to the rescue was WPA/TKIP, curiously enough. (When security is completely disabled ("Open"), the iPad also connects, perhaps expectedly.) The culprit is WPA2/AES (even AES+TKIP). Any iteration of WPA2/AES ends up blocking the iPad from getting the appropriate IP address via DHCP. Once I changed to WPA/TKIP, everything's been rock-solid and fast.
(The only times WPA2/AES worked was when the iPad was first used for a couple days, and a couple days after switching back to WPA2/AES when it started working with WPA/TKIP. Since then, switching back to WPA2/AES no longer works, even temporarily.)
Any idea why initially WPA2/AES worked, and then suddenly stopped?

    Ralph Landry1 wrote:
That is a very interesting question ... [involving] the combination of the router and the iPad and their respective implementations of the AES encryption algorithm. The AES algorithm is considerably more complex than TKIP. Why some have problems and not others has to be related to the router and its implementation and the Apple implementation.... t works fine for me connecting with [both] a Verizon FiOS (Actiontec) router [a]nd ... an AirPort Extreme. But there have been a number of posts recently about problems with Linksys and Belkin connectivity.
Tell me about it. I'd been pulling my hair out prior to "discovering (by accident," as George Costanza would say) that WPA/TKIP fixed the problem, and seems to be working fine and fast. Now I'm just academically frustrated (better than actually frustrated) wondering why WPA2/AES is so problematic +with this particular trifecta+ (my iPad, my Linksys router, and WPA2/AES).
Bottom line is there is probably not an easy solution ... and since you do have a strong security protocol that works, keep using it. Very strange that there would be a change in connectivity after a few months, though. Old engineering philosophy, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you have something that works, stick with it for now.
Actually, WPA2/AES worked on two (short but notable) occasions:
    a) for two days when I first unpacked the iPad, and
    b) for two days when I switched back to WPA2/AES upon discovering WPA/TKIP fixed the issue.
So it wasn't two months, which makes more sense. I agree with you that I'm not touching this arrangement for now. What I did have to do was change over the other devices (PCs, Wii's, TiVo's) that didn't automatically adjust over to WPA/TKIP. (To its credit, the iPhone did that on the fly.) Going through each device hurt a little, knowing I was using a less-than-optimal protocol for just one cranky device at expense of every other one--but of course I'd rather everything play nice than be necessarily cutting edge. (It's not like I'm the Pentagon or anything here.)
But also give feedback to Apple:

Done and done. And thanks for a great and reassuring explanation.

  • IMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9

    Hi,
My 2010 imac (i5, 4G mem) has been pretty slow since mavericks - the system seems slow and unresponsive with even simple operations seeming sluggish (my 8yr old core 2 duo laptop with 10.6 was way more responsive).
I came across the thread Re: iMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9 and hoped I might be able to get some advice.
I have previously reinstalled the system from fresh to see if this would help - and while it did for a while it seems to have become slow again.
I tried starting in safe mode and it didn't seem very different. Some operations seemed slower and the window redrawing was really choppy and a bit weird (not sure if this is usual in safe mode?)
I noticed that while I was running EtreCheck and perhaps also Diskutility just now (after running the imac in safemode and then restarting it) that the Finder kept restarting. All the icons would vanish and then reload in the finder window and on the desktop. I haven't seen this before.
I have installed and run EtreCheck and the results are below. If anyone could give some advice that would be really appreciated. Thanks

    Hi,
thankyou for helping. I think I have managed to follow both steps below. The errors that are occurring related directly to the finder crashing  - I am not sure if this is related to the general slowness but it would be great to fix.
    Thanks
    STEP 1

  • Problem with WPA and ipw3945

Oi, it is me again ...
I have a problem when trying to connect to my wireless router using WPA. The wireless works as long as I leave WPA of, and when I try the same configuration with WPA on an other notebook it does work. I have loaded ipw3945 and started ipw3945d. Without WPA the following woks correct:
    iwconfig eth1 essid network
but when I try the following with WPA I can't connect:
iwconfig eth1 essid yyy mode managed key restricted s:xxx
    here is some more info:

  • Problem with wpa and hidden ssid

    hi,
I have a powerbook g4 (1,67ghz). i am having trouble connecting to a netgear router mr814 v3 if i use wpa and hidden ssid, i get a message, that the router would not support wpa!
there is no problem with wep and hidden ssid or wpa with no hidden ssid.
is also have no problems with wpa and hidden ssid with an ibook.
the problems occur only with the powerbook with os x 10.3.9 as well as 10.4.2. even after the recent airport update, no change.
    thanks for the help,
    ben

I would use WPA and broadcast your SSID.
It use to be useful, but closing your Airport or wireless network (sometimes referred to as not broadcasting your SSID) is really no longer a real option when it comes to wireless security.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security.
My recommendation is not to worry about broadcasting your SSID but use WPA. This will be more secure than a closed WEP encrypted network. Closing your network makes it very difficult for neighbouring networks to see which channels are free thus causing potential interference problems.
Another thing to consider is that a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable (regardless of whether it is broadcasting a SSID). If someone was determined to hack into your network, then not broadcasting your SSID and MAC address access control is not going to stop them.
WPA is virtually uncrackable (only really vunerable to a dictionary attack if a real word is used as a password) and therefore will stop the casual user and the determined hacker.

Having trouble setting up a linksys WRT54GS router with verizon DSL using a westell 6100F modem. the modem works fine by its self  but the router will not connect  to the internet when installed like the cd tells you to.
online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

Ok I found " Installing the liksys wireless router with a westell 6100 modem" in the verizon troubleshooting guides. printed the instructions so I would'nt forget. step 1 open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address field.  PROBLEM it comes up with a login screen that I don't know how to sign into. tried the obvious stuff. cannot get past the login screen. I knew this sounded to easy to be true. anyone have any ideas?

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.
