WRT54G software installation now prevents internet connection WITHOUT router

Since installing the software/drivers that were on the installation CD I can no longer connect to the internet when NOT using the router. i.e. if I connect my modem directly to my PC it recognises the modem is connected but then gives me a "limited or no connectivity" message and I cannot connect to the internet at all. However, if I connect my modem to the router and then connect the router to my PC I can get an internet connection just fine. Whatever software was installed has prevented all internet connectivity when not using the router. Does anyone know how I can get a direct modem-to-PC connection working again? Thanks

start ==> control panel ==> system ==>hardware ==> device manager ==> network adaptor ==>ethernet adaptor ** right click on that adaptor ==> go to properties==>go to advanced tab==> linkspeed & duplex==> changed card speed to 10 mbps half duplex

I rented a Movie and it has been loading for 3 hours now. Internet connection is fine. Have never had a problem with this before. What's really annoying is that the 24 hour time limit is counting down even though we cant watch it. Any suggestion"hours now

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Additionally, your 24 hours don't start until you begin to watch the movie, you have 30 days to start watching the movie.

It appears since my Windows PC McAfee AV subscription expired my PC's iTunes doesn't see my two Apple TV2's. My computer has internet connection thru router and my ATV has internet connection thru same router. My iPad can see the ATV but it can't see iT

My Windows PC iTunes doesn't see my two Apple TV2's (in the speaker button in lower right of iTunes), I believe this problem began when my PC's McAfee AV subscription expired. My computer has internet connection thru router and my ATVs have internet connection thru same router so it's not a networking issue. My iPad can see the ATVs but it can't see iTunes so the problem appears to be PC/iTunes related. I turned the PC's firewall off but no joy. I uninstalled the expired McAfee and still no joy. Reboot = no joy. Glass of scotch = no joy. Need help!!

Wanted to add that I turned on Home Sharing w/the same account in iTunes and ATVs. And I've successfully streamed music/photos to my ATVs for over a year.

Software Installer and wireless internet problems after upgrade from Leopard to Lion.

Last weekend I upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then from Snow Leopard to Lion. I'm having a couple of problems.
First, I cannot get the wireless internet to work. My internet connection is fine, I can plug the ethernet cord in and all is well. But I cannot get wireless signals to work. Have tried both my Airport Express and an old linksys router, and neither seem to work. They both worked just fine before the update. I had very fast wireless internet, and now nothing. With the Airport Express, when I plug it in iti'll just continuously blink orange, and the Airport Utility refuses to recognize it. The linksys router seems to work, because it puts off a signal and my iPhone connects to it. My computer recognizes the signal, but it won't open any internet pages, says I'm not connected.
Today I tried to install Apple's Migration Assistant software to help with my first problem. But a funny thing happened. The software installer says I don't have enough space. But I have plenty- I have almost 200 GB, and I only need 5 MB for the program. I've never seen this happen before, it's so odd. Any suggestions?

You can't purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store. Or "download" it. That will be possible for Lion.

Scheduling start up, shut down and internet connection without override

System:
I have a Mac on 10.5.8 and I have just purchased a new desktop Mac, and I need to be able to apply the solution to this question on both of those computers. I'll also be adding an iphone and ipad in the next couple of weeks.
Question:
I need to break a habit and to do it I need some external tools that I can't work around. I want to be able to schedule my computer to start up at noon and close at 10pm, without me being able to click a button or three to override it. I would want to set it for a week at a time and be able to renew at the end of each week.
Similarly, within the time the computer is on I want to schedule when I have internet connection. For example, Tuesday to Sunday from 12.30-2.00pm, 4.00-5.30pm and 7.00-9.00pm. On Mondays I would want additional access from 5am to noon (which I've just realised would mean that the start up time would need an exception for Mondays as well).
I can set someone up to do this for me remotely, presumably using Parental Controls (though I'm not sure they work with that kind of specificity) but I can see a hitch in that plan in that I would still want to be able to download software and apps (which require the computer's password which I presume the offsite person would use to set up and then lock the controls.
I've been using the app Self-Control for the past couple of days and it works....but. I love that I cannot override it, that's brilliant. However, it is still giving me access to some of the sites I've blocked. For example, on tumblr, my blog and dashboard are invisible to me, but I can see the blogs of others if I type in their blog address; I can understand that because it adds a variation to the address, but it seems to be random and constantly changing who and what I can see. Also, it is making a massive number of other sites not work properly (reverting to very old school black and blue Times Roman html), images aren't working and it's blocking sites I've never heard of, let alone put on my blacklist. Sometimes it will let me onto a site then kick me off a few seconds later or if I click onto another page. It is blocking a site I removed from the blacklist. I can't access Google Maps either. So, it has limitations.
My prime concern is limiting the times (not just the duration of access but the times of day I have access) the computer is on and that I have internet connection.
I hope someone similarly in need of breaking their computer/internet habit can offer a solution or suite of solutions.

How to share iMac WiFi Internet connection without a router

I would like to know if I can link my iPod Touch (new one) to my iMac so that share my internet connection via wi-fi via Airport at home without a router.
I have tried to like my ipod touch to iMac by turning airport and setting up a new network, the ipod touch is able to pick up the wireless signal of my iMac ant the Airport status bar shows an arrow out which mean that airport is sending signal out but for some reason when I try to use Safari or Mail in get the following error message "cannot Open Page Page, Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet"
Also when when scanning for wireless signal with my iMac I am able to pickup my neighbours wireless signal while my iPod Touch is only able to pickup my iMac airport wireless signal.
What I am missing ?

1. Open System Preferences
2. Go to 'Sharing'
3. Click on 'Internet Sharing' (leave the box unchecked for now).
4. From 'Share your connection from' choose 'Built-in Ethernet'
5. From 'To computers using' check the 'Airport' box
6. Open 'AirPort Options' (bottom right), name the network. (Once it all works, go back and assign a password).
7. Now, check 'Internet Sharing' box and turn on AirPort. The AirPort sign on the iMac menu should turn into an arrow.

Transferred old apple settings, now no Internet connection

I just transferred all my old settings from my old Airport Extreme to the new Dual Band one. I then followed the prompts and unplugged the old AE, and plugged the WAN connection into the new AE.
Now, I have no internet, although my new AEDB shows green light... Anyone know what I can do about this?

I have solved this issue. It was a combination of two problems. When I migrated the settings from the old machine, I also created a Guest Network for a friend that was visiting. My Macbook Pro joined the Guest Network which for some reason was NOT sharing Internet connection.
The solution was to turn off the Guest Network and allow the MBP to connect to the correct IP range.
Chances are that not completely restarting the machine was a reason for not being able to join, but I did restart the machine yesterday a few times and wasn't getting any help.
Anyhow, for whatever it is worth, my situation is solved. Not sure what will happen when I need to re-enable the guest network.

IMac was connected to my wifi, now "no internet connection" works on others

Hi Everyone,
So, I'm using a current generation (I think!) 21.5" i3 iMac. All has been fine, except since yesterday, but, it's a weird problem..
So, I was connected to my home wifi, (a netgear router provided by my ISP), all was well (for the last 6 months or whatever), and then suddenly out of nowhere I have an exclamation mark over my airport sign and "no internet connection" when I click it. (now known as "!")
First thing I tried was restarting router, then restarting iMac. Neither worked, came back and still "!".
Then I realised, my iPhone is on the WiFi and it has been working fine, sure enough it is fine. I got out my old MBP and went on it, and hey, the internet works absolutely fine. So, I started worrying that perhaps the airport in the iMac has suffered some kind of failure...
But, alas no, as I realised some of our neighbours have unprotected networks, so went on a nice "NETGEAR" network, and hey! The internet works on the iMac again. Went back to my network and it comes back with.... "!"
So, I then logically (perhaps) thought that the router has decided to dislike the iMac and isn't letting it connect... So, I reset the router to factory settings (which was a bad idea now that I look back as I didn't have login settings so had to phone call centre of ISP to get details... D'oh..) but now that the internet is back up, I also changed the name of the network, the passwords etc, thinking I could fool the iMac into thinking it's something else, but.. NO! Connected to the new network and.... "!"
So, it's miffing me off quite a lot. I am currently using my Uni's network (which just reaches my flat) but it's not that fast, and not intended for use at home, I'm sure! I'd like to get back on my network.
Any help greatly appreciated but, I realise this is an odd problem.. just hoping I'm not the first?

Take a look at your router settings. If you use WEP encryption, change it to WPA2. Macs really don't like WEP.

WRT54GS cannot detect an active internet connection. HELP!

Ok well just recently, I don't know why though but my router won't detect an active internet connection from my Cable Modem. I have my Router and Modem connected so I can play Xbox in my room. Well since my router can't detect an active internet connection now since the new Xbox update doesn't allow you to enter the encryption key anymore, I can't go on Xbox live because of it. I've tried changing the ethernet cable in different ports and it still doesn't work. If someone can please help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should reset your router and re-configure it...
1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
2. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for
another 30 Seconds.
3. Plug back the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button
for 30 Seconds.

Installer error and internet connection

The installer app for the Creative Cloud Desktop application keeps stating that I have no internet connection when I definitely do have one. I suspect it has something to do with an old vpn and proxy server but I am unable to change the installer's LAN connection settings. Can someone help with this?

Hi -- I was able to resolve this by following the posts relating to proxy servers. Although I no longer am running a vpn, the proxy server check box was still checked under the Internet Options Connections tab and LAN settings. Unchecking the box then seemed to allow the Creative Cloud Desktop applicaiton to 'see' my interent connection and connect. Thank you to Florian for providing the clues to this resolution.

Cannot update to latest software. error message states internet connection timed out

Does anyone have a similar problem? I cannot update to the latest software for my I Phone 4. The error message says, internet connection timed out. Which is obviously has not. It also says check your internet settings. I am not sure what that means. I have windows 7.

If the disabling the firewall doesnt help, then also try disabling your anti-virus, this was what was causing me an issue.
Although make sure you re-enable both your firewall and anti-virus after the update completes.

I have a WRT54G Ver. 8 wireless router & it continues to drop the internet connection on both my wired Pc & the laptop which is wireless. I had a D-link router prior to it's demise was working fine. I have cable as a ISP. When I reboot the router, all is good again for a few pages & then it craps out again.
Please assist me if possible, this is getting really frustraiting.

Any chance you have an XBox connected to this router? I've got three friends all with WRT54G ver 8 routers with XBoxes connected and it almost seems like something is trying to hack the security password. I'm searching to see if there is then a lock out which requires a manual reset. It just started happening around Christmas time.

you will have to excuse my ignorance, i'm looking to switch to a mac for the first time. i like the new macbooks.
i need to be able to connect to the internet without using the wireless or having a connection to the macbook.
as i understand PC data card cannot be used as i dont think the macbook has a slot for them..... correct me if i'm wrong.
and i dont even know if you can use data cards with them?
any help for a newbie.

As you mention, PC Cards are not compatible with the MacBook as it does not have a PC Card slot. I've found that by far the simplest way to get an Internet connection on the road is to use a compatible Bluetooth 3G enabled mobile phone. Ok, I have skimmed through the threads here and the FAQ and still am having troubles. I amt trying to connect a MacbookPro to this wireless router. I have had it connected before which adds to my frustration. I ran all the system diagnostics and come to a point where it says, "This device has an internet connect but cannot load __________. Make sure you have the address typed in correctly." My MAC picks up the router signal, but in the diagnostics it goes as follows. AirPort - Yes Airport Settings - Yes Network Settings - Yes ISP - Yes Internet - No Server - No Please, any help is very appreciated.

Also tried the factory reset and starting from scratch and nothing...
