WRT54G - Stopped working. Will not work again.

I got this router about 4 months ago to share my desktop's internet connection with my mom's new laptop. After 3 or 4 days of frustration, I got it to work. It then worked fine for a few months until one week ago, it decided to mess up. So for the past week I've been struggling to get the router working again, but with no luck. My internet: Bellsouth DSL. My modem: Westell Wirespeed Dual Connect. I begin each of my now 15-20 sessions in frustration by completely disconnecting the router from the PC and modem, disconnecting the modem from the PC, and starting the setup program from the install disc that came with the router. Everything works fine at first. The router takes me to set up my PPoE connection. I input the correct info and then it always hits this snag - during the part where it's checking the internet connection, it reaches 100% 3 or 4 times before telling me no internet connection can be detected. I should turn off the modem, then turn it on again. That doesn't change anything. My problem, during the first few days I had the router, was that I had to go into the modem settings and change it to "Bridged Ethernet Mode". That doesn't work anymore. The router still does not want to recognize my net connection, even with Bridged Ethernet enabled on the router. Also, every time I restart the modem to comply with the setup program's advice, the modem reverts to PPoE mode. Either way, no connection can be found. That makes perfect sense considering I can just disconnect the router and connect flawlessly to the internet with my modem in less than 10 seconds. What could be making the router act like that? Without the router set up, I can't go into the router settings. I can't see any settings in my modem settings that seems to be able to help. I'm frustrated, please help.

1)connect the computer to the router's port 1.
2)access the router using http://192.168.1.1 .. the default login password is admin
3)change the router's local ip add to 192.168.2.1 .. save the settings .. do a power cycle
4)connect the modem to the router's internet port
5)access the router using http://192.168.2.1 ... click on the status tab and check the internet ip add
6)if there is an ip add , try to go online
7)if you cannot go online or there is no ip add , on the router web ui , change the internet connection type to PPPoE .. enter the username and password information given by the ISP . save the settings
8)click on status...make sure the login status is connected and there is an ip add
9)if any problem in setting up the PPPoE conenction , configure the modem in bridge mode ..
