WRT54G Suddenly loosing range!?

My WRT54G is about 2.5yrs old. Just today, I noticed I was getting a weaker connection when I would move my laptop around the house. I upgraded the firm ware. Nothing. Then I moved the router closer to the door way in the home office. Still nothing. It seems like every 2-3 paces I take away from the router my connection rate drops! 54, 36, 18, 11, 5.5, 2, and then finally 1Mbps. I thought it might have been my laptop (since it too is over 2 years old). But I'm pretty sure its just my router after being able to connect to a hotel's SSID down the street. Is it time to buy a new one or is there anything I can do to bring the range back up to par?

Try this setting ....
Channel - 1 or 11
Beacon interval - 75
RTS & fragmantation threshold - 2306

  • If your Mac suddenly looses Firewire devices, here's one cure...

Since we FCP people use a lot of external Firewire drives, this might be useful.
If your Mac suddenly looses Firewire devices, try this. (I got this from LukeA on the iLounge forums.)
Shut off your Mac for at least 10 minutes. Then reset the P-RAM (whatever that is) by holding these keys on startup: Cmd + Opt + P + R - until the Mac chimes a few times.
My Mac Mini suddenly stopped recognizing any external Firewire drives. I thought the port had probably blown on the computer, and was about to buy a new iMac, but I tried this as a last resort. It worked!
Now I don't get my new iMac! ****!

I got this from LukeA on the iLounge forums
Just so you'll know, Apple has a ton of articles and how-to's right on this website (just click the Support link above and do a search). Other common Firewire problems can also be addressed by resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit) button: http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kword=&type=&newstype=&q=pmu

  • Using old WRT54GS as a range extender?

    Good morning!
I first want to say I "think" I might be posting in the wrong forums for this question, but because I'm not really sure what the proper terminology for this is, I thought it best to ask here.
I have recently upgraded my router for my home network from an old Linksys WRT54GS G router, to a new E2500 N router.  I have heard/read that it is possible to reconfiqure my old router to act as a range extender for my network but I am unclear how to do so.  I think this may be the same thing as an access point, but all the FAQ's I've found seem to have this work as a solo device, not as a device on existing network.  I have my e2500 setup with the modem in my study and broadcasting from there, and would like to use my old G router set up as a range extender to be located in the front living room area and picking up the network signal and rebroadcasting from there without a modem or computer attached.
I would like to know if this is possible, and if so, could someone please post a link to a FAQ that might help me set it up properly?  Thank you for any and all help on this and hope everyone has a great day!

Sure it's easy.  Have you searched the forum for your information?  In the upper right search area type in 'two routers'.

  • WRT54GS suddenly stopped working

My WRT54GS Linksys wireless router suddenly stopped working. It is not an Internet problem because if I disconnect my router the Internet will start working again. I am connected thru a DSL connection. My router's power light will not stop flashing but all the other necessary lights are on. Any help pls...
Message Edited by nova_flush on 04-18-200702:30 PM

If the Power light is flashing thn thr is 100% problem with router. Power light should be solid green and other lights can be flickering.
Try to change power cord or reset the router for 30 sec and unplug pwer cord and plug back after 10 sec.
Remember powerlight should become solid green.
If not contact tech support bcz it may have gone bad and u will need replacement,
so contact as soon as possible before u run out of warranty period of the router.

  • Using WRT54G (v5) as range expander/bridge/AP

Hi! I have a fibre connection where the modem has a built in wifi router. The signal isn't too good on the 2nd floor of my house and I have an old WRT54G that I thought I would be able to use as a bridge/range expander/AP for the wifi network.
I have the possibility of wiring the two routers together with ethernet cable, but would like the WRT54G to use the same SSID and pw as the downstairs router so that all my mobile devices can "roam" and not change networks.
What are the steps I need to take? I have the latest firmware installed (1.2.8) and I was hoping not having to install some third party firmware to be able to do this.
I suppose I need to assign a fixed IP to the WRT54G within the same network as the other router (that gives out DHCP), turn off DHCP on the WRT54G, setup the wlan connection to use the same SSID and WPA password as the other router. But then what? Is it done then? I see no opitions to use it as a bridge or so...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t think the Linksys WRT54G can be set-up as a wireless repeater or wireless bridge for the reason that it would need to be physically connected to a modem or another router for it to receive and transmit the internet connection. The best thing that can be done is to cascade your WRT54G behind your gateway device. Through cascading, you can set-up the router as an access point and you can opt to configure the same wireless settings to extend the signal.

  • Is WRT54G v5 'Port Range Forward' mean the same as NAT ?

    Dear all:
    As title said.
    Do I missunderstand anything?
I would like to sent magic packet pass through WRt54G, thus I would like to set port forward.
    Could anyone help ?
    I thank you in advance.
    Best Regards
    chen min

NAT represent network address translation as well.
I think WRT54G supports WOL except WOW directly.
I try to sent magic packet pass through WRT54G. And according of log information, It did passed through WRT54 on the port which I assigned.
I think it would be possible if boardcasting IP was allowed in Port Range Forward.
I kept looking for more information from forum.
    Best Regards

  • WRT54G Suddenly Disconnects

Its fine when i start the modem and used it for maybe around an hour, then it just suddenly disconnects.
it shouldn't be a ISP issue because when i dial up manually it never disconnects.
When it disconnects, i need to restart the router to continue using the internet, this gets really annoying when you're browsing stuff or gaming.
    Please help, I'm using WRT54G, firmware v7
Windows 7 ( i guess the windows doesn't affect my internet connection )

Who is your Internet service provider?
If you connect the computer directly to the modem, it works fine.
Try to upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router , it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure the router.
Press and hold the reset button on your router 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 10 seconds. Power cycle the router.
Follow this link to reconfigure the router with cable Internet service.
Follow this link to reconfigure the router with DSL Internet service.
Once you reconfigure the router, open the setup page of the router and reduce the MTU to 1365. Power cycle the router and check the connection

  • Extreme suddenly lost range

My airport extreme suddenly lost it's range last night. We were working on the computer, where we always do, and the internet just disappeared. I have my extreme upstairs (for the last 6 months) and have NEVER had a problem, maybe usually only lose 1 bar, anywhere in the house. Now I can't connect at all when I'm downstairs, and I drop down to 1-2 bars when I'm in the NEXT room. Anyone know why this might suddenly happen? Thanks,
    Wade
oh yeah, and I have full bars when I'm in the same room. No new materials have been added anywhere in the house.

As well as above, I would set the base station to only accept n connections if that is not set already. If you don't have it set to the 5ghz band yet, also try that, as your interference might be something other than another wireless network.
If you set your base station to only accept "n" connections this will eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by someone else connecting at the slower speed, forcing your network to operate in b/g mode.
For some reason, my base station does not have channel selections when it's in the 5ghz mode although it hasn't been an issue for me. The only setting it will accept is automatic, but I haven't had any interference issues while it is in 5ghz mode.

  • WRT54G V8 looses connection

My WRT54G V8 continuously looses internet connection. It has nothing to do with wireless issues, as it is used primarily as a wired router, and as a wireless for secondary reasons.
The router disconnects whenever it feels like, regardless if I am on the net or not. If I log into the router and renew the DHCP, I can access the net again for a little bit, until I have to do it again. I have upgraded the firmware numerous times, reset and rebooted the untit almost as many times... and it has not fixed the problem. I have also logged into the unit and changed the MTU, dumbing it down and putting it to manual. Same results...
I am connected to a local Cable internet, with the modem going to the router, then to my computer. Any help and advice would be very apreciated.
    Automatic config - DHCP

    1)  Is this a new setup?  Has your system ever worked properly?
    2)  Please state your ISP.
    3)  Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the router).
    4)  Connect your computer directly to the modem (not the router).  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.  Post your results.
    5)  Are you using any peer-to-peer (P2P) software?

  • WRT54G - Suddenly no surfing! Resetting only option...

Here is a fun problem. After several days of the router working perfectly... I can not surf with any device (wired or wireless.) Resetting the router and DSL modem with all devices off does not help. The only solution is to reset the router to factory defaults and start over. During the "no surf" period I have confirmed that the DSL modem is connected properly and is actually online. My config is a Static IP setup (all machines have set IPs and connect to the router using it as DNS and gateway.) This configuration worked perfectly for 2 years. Now, it suddenly does this every once in awhile. I have a WRT54G with the latest firmware. Any suggestions?

I was having similar problems to what you have described. Try this procedure
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4031&lid=3994137401B...
I used the last MTU value that did not fragment. I just did this yesterday so I'm not positive my issue is resolved. The other thing is confirm that you are using the latest firmware version. I thought I was current too but I am not. I have downloaded the latest version for my router but haven't installed it yet. I want to see if I still have issues.

  • WRT54G Suddenly gets no power

My WRT54G router has worked just fine for the past few years. After returning home from dinner last night I found it to be completely off. I am unable to get it to power on. Reset button doesn't help. Plugging into a different electrical outlet doesn't help. Vigorously slapping the unit doesn't help. I'm able to get online by connecting directly to my modem so I don't think the other components are the problem.
Do these things just poop out suddenly? Could it be the power supply?
Are there any diagnostics I can try? Obviously I can't open the router in my browser? I hate to spend $50 on a new one but it probably won't take much of my time to make $50 look like a bargain.
    Any help/suggestions/ideas welcome.
    Thanks,
    Gary

OK, this is weird. I tried the power adapter from my Iomega 100mb zip drive on the router. It fit snugly on the receptacle pin and lit up the router like it should be. Then, I plugged the router's power adapter into the zip drive and the zip drive turned on. Very strange.
That's the way it is now--both the desktop and notebook computer are on the network and surfing the internet, getting e mail, etc.
Anyone have any ideas about what's going on here now?
Also, I'm wondering if I could just leave the two adapters as they are now-Linksys adapter connnected to the zip drive; zip drive adapter connected to the router.
The Linksys adapter plug reads: AC input: 100-120 VAC, 47.-63 hz 0.5A, DC Output: 5.0VDC 2.0A
The zip drive adapter plug reads: Input: 120VAC, 0.125MA, 60HZ,
    Output: 5VDC 1.0 A
Again, all comments/ideas welcome, especially from those of you who understand all things electrical.

  • My WRT54G suddenly stopped working please help.

Hi, i recently configured the security of the router, and then when i pressed the auto connect on the router it can no longer send a wireless signal... i tried to press the RESET button on the back, it should return it to the factory setting right? but when i connected it it wont give me good ip addresses it says limited or no connectivity, even if i manual set the ip. then try to access the home page it would not work.
i have some ideas how to fix this but i dont know if it is possible or not. :
1.) reset the router from a computer without accessing the page.
2.) go to a service center (if there is an available in the philippines...)
3.) overriding the firmware without accessing the page
please help, or else i would need to spend another 40-50$ for a new router T_T
i also tried to download the easylink firmware, or the easlink connect
but i get a 550 error when accessing the page, the online chat is no help either, they say i am on first queue but no one is answering :/

Hard reset your router for a minute...
Press and hold the reset button for 1 minute...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 1 minute and re-connect the power cable...Also make sure that your computer is set to obtain IP automatically, disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page...Now check if you can access your router set-up...
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1...
If you get the above mentioned ip address and gateway then you should be able to re-configure your router...If you get an IP Address of 169.254, then reset the router again...If still you don't get the above mentione ip address and gateway then  you should give a static ip address on the computer...
Click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>>Network Connections- Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1...Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...Now try to ping the Default Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press enter, see if you get 4 replies...If it does not then try to diable and security softwares/firewalls on your computer and try to ping it again, you should get 4 replies...
If you get the set-up page then you can configure your router...

  • MacBook Pro suddenly looses all power and turns off

    Hi folks
Ive experienced this twice in the last week, and jut pray that it doesnt ever happen when im working on an unsaved Logic Pro Project.
Anyhow, ill be working away and then screen goes black. All power is lost to the computer. You cant turn it back on untill you insert the power adapter. Both times it happend the power to the mains has not been plugged in. Once you install power Then it picks up power and it restarts.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Is this a known issue? Im just scared as tits that one day im going to be in the middle of something really important and its gona go wacko on me.
The battery is not dead, when i rebooted on the first time battery was at 16% second time it was at 22%

    same here.
my MBP started doing it recently.
for once, battery goes out of juice pretty quickly.
but there is still some juice left (last time - 17%) and suddenly the machine just switches off... like that... no warning, no sleep, nothing....
I did the "battery formatting" and also reset PRAM (?) (switched it off, took the battery out and kept power button pressed for 10 secs)
I do not like this behaviour. Interestingly, the battery has been replaced (there was a battery recall action about a year ago)
Awaiting some hints re: what can be causing this...

  • Airport express suddenly lost range

    Hello,
My airport express was working fine for a long time ago. Suddenly it started blinking amber. I unplugged and plugged back with no success. Did hard reset, nothing. But, when I plug it closer to the time capsule it works!
This is really strange. It used to work fine at the first location for years, but now it only works closer to the router?
    Can somebody help me?

    Some possibilities:
    1) The AirPort Express is 3+ years old, and the power supply is starting to head downhill. When you have to move the Express even closer to the Time Capsule, it is time for a new Express.
    2) You have neighbors that have added new networks near you, and the signals from their networks are interfering with your network.  Not much that you can do about that except locate the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as far away from any outside walls on your home as possible.
    3) A combination of both 1) and 2) above.
