WRT54G to WRT54G setup help

I have a DSL connection into the WRT54G (firmware v2...), which is then connected by Ethernet to the PC (Win2000). Works fine. Now I want to add a PC (XP) in the basement office and happen to have another WRT54G (firmware v1.02). So I run Ethernet into the second router (using port1, not Internet) from the basement computer. What do I need to set so the two routers "connect", allowing the basement computer to share the internet connection? Should the second router's Internet lights come on when it sees the first router? Thanks!

Honestly, I would suggest heading over to http://www.dd-wrt.com and browsing through the offerings on their table. I have two WRT54G's and a WRT54GS. One of the WRT54G's is used as my access point. the other two (the WRT54G and the WRT54GS) are used as client bridges. The DD-WRT v23 SP2 (08/04/06) std Edition of their firmware works EXCELLENTLY! I have it installed on all three of my routers. One of the routers (client bridge mode) is host to 4 computers, the other (client bridge mode) is host to another 3. All of which connect (nearly) transparently to the router I have in AP mode. simple set up too. upload new firmware, click the status tab (of the router you want to use as a client bridge) click site survey, then click connect. POOF! you have an instant and (once again, nearly) transparent bridge. In this mode however, the computers IP's will not be shown on the AP, only the (client bridge) routers IP and MAC. So take that into account when your setting up security. (such as MAC filtering and WEP.) Hope this helps. But keep in mind, As others warn you, you should listen. There is very little in the way of "live tech support" when you upload this third party firmware, AND you void the warranty if you use third party firmware. However, there IS E X T E N S I V E documentation on everything (and feature) provided with the firmware. (DD-WRT's Firmware at least, not sure about some of the others, Found the DD-WRT firmware, liked it, stuck with it) You'll also get some other features on the upgrade... such as how many dBi you wish to have. (WRT54X's are capable of up to -251mW, which is the = to 26dBi. however, you will need to add some heat sinks to accomplish this, as it WILL burn out your router. I wouldnt go above 70mW, in any case, as you begin to cause RF interference and violate FCC rules. Now, for the WRT54G that are V.5 and V.6, there is a special way to do this, and yes you STILL can upload third party firmware. Once again head over to www.dd-wrt.com and do some research. There IS a walkthrough for flashing the V.5 and V.6 of the WRT54G's (GS's) with their firmware. If this is information overload, then honestly you're better off getting a couple linksys WUSB54GP - Wireless-G Portable USB Adapters and using them instead. Good luck, and I hope this helped.

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Setup Help Needed

    Hi,
I have a WRT 54G router I want to set up on my network.
What I want to be able to do is have the router allow wireless laptops to connect via wireless, but I want the router to assign the IP automatically through DHCP. Is this possible?
My Network information is as follows:
Router would be assigned IP 192.168.72.10
Network information for Office where this is going:
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.72.1
    Primary DNS: 192.168.1.59
    Secondary DNS: 192.168.1.52
    any help would be appreciated...

First of all, let me say that, assuming you have a Linksys router in the main office, that there is no reason why that router could not use both fixed LAN IP addresses, and have its DHCP server turned on and give out DHCP addresses also.  So, it seems like you could setup the system in the manner I mentioned in my previous post.   Unless, for some reason, you prefer not to do it this way.
If you really want to set it up with the WRT54G giving out DHCP addresses, then read on:
If you want to use the DHCP server in the WRT54G, you will need to place it on a separate subnet.
I'm still a bit confused by what you have written.  You said that the WRT54G router "would be assigned IP 192.168.72.10".  And later you said that my assumption was correct that you set the "Local IP Address" to this value.   However, if you want to use the DHCP server in the WRT54G, this will not work, because to use the DHCP server, the WRT54G needs to be on a separate subnet.
Instead, in the WRT54G, you would need to set the "Internet Connection Type" to "Static", then give the WRT54G the WAN address (not local IP address) of 192.168.72.10.   (You will also need to specify the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 , default gateway 192.168.72.1 , and DNS (proxy) server 192.168.72.1 )  You would need to reset the WRT54G's  "Local IP address" to a subnet that is not used elsewhere in your network.  Since you apparently already use 192.168.1.x  and  192.168.72.x  subnets, you will need to pick something else, perhaps 192.168.54.1 for the "local IP address" of the WRT54G.
In this type of setup, you would leave the DHCP server of the WRT54G enabled, and wire a LAN port from the office router to the Internet port of the WRT54G.
In this case, the WRT54G is in control of all your router settings, including port forwarding, DHCP server, and wireless settings.  Also note that if you need to forward a port, you will need to forward the port through your entire network, not just the WRT54G.
One additional warning.  I have not personally used a "3 subnet" system with Linksys routers.  So I am not certain that all your DNS addresses will flow through the system properly.  If it doesn't work, you may need to enter some of you actual Internet based DNS addresses (or perhaps your Primary and Secondary 192.168.1.59 and .52 DNS servers) into the WRT54G router by hand, rather than using the built in Linksys DNS proxy at 192.168.72.1
    Hope this helps.

  • Linksys WRT54g + WAP54g setup help

yes i know im using older hardware but its what i have available lol. Hoping some one can help me out. its been bugging me like hell.
been playing with it for a few days and i cant figure it out
its driving me mad lol hope someone can help.
    heres the setup.
WRT54g Router is setup in point A with wireless connection on.
Laptop computer at point C wireless connection, which is on the opposite side of the house. so this means it gets very low signal.
    looks like this A ------------------------------------------ C
Now i was trying to put WAP54g at point B so that it can get signal from point A and boost it so that the signal can reach point C
so it looks like this A ---------------- B ------------------- C least that's what im trying to accomplish.
the wap54g only has for AP modes and i tried em all and cant get it to work. im missing a step i just dont know where lol
    Access point
    AP Client
Wireless Repeater (this looked like the obvious choice but it didnt work or i did it wrong)
    Wireless Bridge
    can someone help out?
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you refer my previous post, you can setup your AP in a repeater mode and Router and AP will communicate wirelessly and it will send the wireless signal to your laptop. If you want to connect the AP hardwired to the router then, configure the AP in AP Mode.

  • Site setup help...

    Hi -
I am new to using CS5 and I am having a few different problems.  I am not sure but I think they all stem from improper setup.  I had used dreamweaver mx 2004 to set up a few sites back in 2004-5 so I am am somehwat familiar with setup, however, besides trying out CS5 on a new computer, I also now have a QNAP 459+ NAS which I am using as the remote server (as opposed to a site through go daddy or other).
I have PHP and mysql running on my NAS, and I have also installed Xampp on my computer.  (first off I was not sure that I needed this because I have a server (NAS), but I decided to install so because I was pretty sure that my local machine needed apache running in order to parse php scripts before they run on the server)  In XAMPP control panel, I get the following:
Where it says apache is started but up above it does not say that it is running.  When I try to view PHP code in dreamweaver from the local site, it just shows the little PHP emblem and does not process the code.  It does process php if I access the page from the server by typing the address in a browser.  It does not process at all in dreamweaver.
I also get the following errors in dreamweaver which I am not sure but I think are related:
"dynamically-related files could not be resolved because your credentials don't allow file activity on the server"
    and
"An unknown error occurredwhile discovering dynamically related files. Retry."
I am not sure if I have multiple problems or just one which is causing all these symptoms, but any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,

  • Setup & Help buttons stopped working

I recently upgraded wireless network from WEP to WPA.  Lost wireless connectivity to 3310 All-in-One, and now Setup & Help buttons don't work so I can't connect to new network.  What happened?  Is there a way to setup new network without accessing Setup menu on device?

Get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.  Run the software, making sure there is no USB cable attached.  Choose "Network" or "Wireless" connection type when it asks.  Plug in a USB cable (temporarily) when it asks.

With no files open, edit your preferences and change units to inches.
That said, InDesign will convert units so if you type 11 in, even though the document uses picas, it will convert the inches to picas for you.

  • WRT54G Router Setup Help!!!

Hey guys.  I have a WRT54G router.  I have AT&T yahoo DSL and a modem that came with it.  Whats going on is that I bought a new Dell inspiron laptop computer with a 802.11g wireless card. I bought the router so I can create a wireless network.
When I connect the ethernet cable from the MODEM to my LAPTOP i can access the internet just fine when I click on internet explorer.
When I connect the router to the ethernet cable and try to setup the wireless network nothing happens and it won't finish the install from the LinkSYS CD I installed. I even tried to make it into a wired network.
(MODEM ----CABLE --ROUTER--CABLE---LAPTOP) but I couldn't setup up the internet at all either.
I click on the network connections(on my VISTAPC) and I can see the greens bars lit up on the LYNKSYS network and can't seem to connect to it.
when I take the cable from the router and put it straight into my laptop without my router the internet works just fine.  Help! Thanks
    Ernesto

hi... if you are aware of modem settings...logon to modem's setup page and select "ethernet bridged" and save the settings...connect modem >> router >> pc and logon to router's and select PPPoE under "automatic configuration DHCP" put the username and password and save the settings...click on status tab and try connecting to the PPPoE server...however if you are not aware of the modem settings...well in that case you need to get in touch with your ISP and convert the modem into the bridge mode...let me know if you have any issues will get back to you...
    thanks.

  • Secure Easy Setup Help WRT54GS

    Hi,
Was wondering what it means when the Secure Easy Setup button on the router remains white.. It usually goes to yellow after the flashing, but this time it remains white...
Everything seems to be fine on the wireless network, it's just not going back to yellow for some reason...
I've tried pressing it again, but there is no change.....
Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

That means the SES feature of your router is active. Your router wireless settings are randomly generated by the router and not personalized. For example, your wireless network name (SSID) might be linksys_SES_187498 ......

  • Linksys WRT54G V8 Basic Setup page problems

I have been trying to change my password and all the settings on my WRT54G V8 router today because I forgot the password, and I can't seem to navigate the Basic Setup page. I can log in (most of the time) after resetting the router, but whenever I try to click on a different tab (like "Wireless", or "Security") it comes up with the page saying "This Page Cannot Be Displayed."  I'd like to be able to put a password on it (which I have successfully done before on this router) because I live in a college dorm and would like to keep my internet from being bogged down by other people using it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Tatonka,
I assume you downloaded the WRT54G setup software disk into your PC initially. Reset the router (hold in the reset button for 30 seconds), hard wire your PC to the router, and access the Linksys icon on your desktop. Just follow the prompts after that. I had to do exactly this at my daughter's home last evening. Bob

  • WRT54G Problems with internet, help, used to be fine on old router

    Hello,
I've bought this router yesterday and have 4 major problems with it ( I've had a cheap router before this and all these problems didn't occur when I use that old router again):
1: I can't access some sites like gamershell or nvidia.com, while they DO load up with a proxy.
2: I can't download from at least half the sites on the www, for example everything from microsoft.com times out.
3: This disconnects after like 5 mins after starting a p2p program. Why is this thing not able to keep my connection alive ?
4: A lot of sites load slower, my internet speed is same, but it somehow now takes ages for some sites to respond after ticking in their adress or clicking on a link.
I'm Cabled to the router, the router is plugged to an old ADSL isdn speedthouch home modem from Alcatel ( 5 years old the modem is), I'm connected with it with PPTP.
    Its a version 7 WRT54G router.
( my isp is planet NL, I'm on a 6mb down 1 mb up connection)
Help! Why does this disconnect with p2p, the cheap old router used to be fine 24/7 with p2p.
    Please help, thanks in advance.
(Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

Go to the Setup page and look for the setting called MTU....set it to 1300 and save the settings.... close the browser.... turn off your router by unplugging it from the power.... turn it on after 15 secs then try getting online again.........
Check if you can access the sites afterwards..

  • WRT54G V8 abnormal setup story, and questions

Seeing that they were on sale in Radio Shack, I bought one to replace the POS BEFW11S4, hoping that as a newer and widely used model it will have fewer design flaws.
However, trouble began on the very first setup screen - using Web setup on 192.168.1.1 - where I tried to change the time zone from the factory default PST to EST. Clicking "Save settings" (or whatever the button is called) resulted in a totally empty white screen. I waited a little, but nothing changed, so I hit the "back" arrow. In short, the WRT54G was not remembering any of the changes I made - in any of the different setup screens, clicking "Save settings" resulted in a white screen and the factory defaults did not change.
This was starting to look very much like defective Flash memory (or whatever memory they use to store the settings), but I decided to give it another try with the installation utility that came on its CD. This seemed to run well up to a point, where it said that it failed to install the English language pack (and why did it have to install it to begin with, I wonder - it was communicating properly in English to begin with), and that was that. The utility was not getting past this point. I opened the Web interface again, and found it seriously damaged - only two setup screens present, and no "Save settings" buttons on any of them. Resetting to factory default by any of the methods I looked up here on this forum didn't change a thing - the Web interface was permanently crippled.
It was clear that the unit is defective and I'll be returning it, but I decided as a final try to run the Linksys EasyLink Advisor (found elsewhere on this forum) and see what it has to say. Well, it ran, and actually configured the router the way I wanted, and the router was working! However, the Web interface remained crippled, and that was decisive, since many of the advanced settings that I use have no controls in LELA.
So today I exchanged the unit with another one, and will be setting it up tomorrow. I'd be interested in reading any suggestions you might have as answer to my questions:
    - Does my assumption that it was a defective unit seem plausible? I can't imagine that using the Web interface first can damage the firmware, all the warnings on the box and the unit to "run the CD first" notwithstanding.
    - In light of that, should I perhaps upgrade the firmware before I do anything else? (I downloaded the latest version 8.00.2, the one inside is presumably 8.00.0 (it was on the one I returned)).
    - Has anybody run into similar problems when setting up the V8? In particular, have they deprecated the Web setup in favor of setup tools like LELA and such?

OK, here is the update. As I suspected, the first router was defective. The replacement unit has been up and running for some days now.
    Pros:
    - So far has not frozen from streaming video/audio traffic. This was one of the reasons I was looking for a new router to replace the BEFW11S4.
    - So far has not frozen without reason from just sitting overnight (another reason to replace the BEFW11S4).
    - Does not freeze instantly when UPnP is turned on (a third reason to replace the BEFW11S4), and UPnP actually works.
    Cons:
    - Absolutely no change in user features from the BEFW11S4, the setup menus are almost identical (excluding of course the new wireless options). I was hoping to be able to tell DHCP to give static IP addresses to specific MAC addresses; no such thing.
    - The firewall screen does not show the ports opened by UPnP; it only shows the static ones that can be setup by using the screen. In essence, you don't know the state of the firewall; that's bad. Maybe this is the same behavior as in BEFW11S4, but I wouldn't know - it could not work at all with UPnP activated.
    - There appears to be some mix-up in the router help screen for wireless security. For WPA2, it says "Choose TKIP+AES if you have both WPA and WPA2 devices on your network.". However, when I set WPA2 and selected TKIP+AES, the WPA clients could not connect; I had to set it back to just WPA. I don't think I was doing anything wrong, but I'm not 100% sure.
    - Just like in BEFW11S4, if I look at the DHCP client table from time to time, it empties itself; at some point it becomes totally empty. Combined with the lack of static IP, this makes using IP stuff on the local network (like Telnet or FTP) a PITA.
    - Not unexpectedly, IPX/SPX does not cross the wireless/wired boundary of the LAN, although it should. This is apparently a common problem with cheap equipment, and I'm not sure if it is actually the WRT54G's fault, or the wireless adapters'.
That's it, more or less. Does anybody here know if any custom firmware for the WRT54G addresses these issues? But with my luck, it will be probably for the old hardware platform, not the new one in V8.

  • WRT54G V.5 Setup Problem

My WRT54G V.5 with SpeedBooster can't seem to set up properly. I am currently using a BEFSR41 V.4 to split my internet connection between my PC running Windows XP, and my Mac running OS X Panther (10.3.9). The BEFSR41 works just fine between the PC and the Mac, but the WRT54G can't get through setup. Okay, here's what I do -- I insert the Setup CD on my PC, I follow all the instructions, and then when it comes to the part where it shows the percent bar and a timer, it goes all the way through that, then... it freezes up. I honestly don't know what's wrong with this, but I was thinking that I should only connect my PC into port 1 and then after the setup is done, connect my Mac to port 2. By the way, I am planning on using the wireless to do gaming on my Xbox and my Nintendo DS if that makes any difference. Any help to this problem would be greatly appriciated because I really want to start using this item. Thank you very much for any help!

    2. Leave the username blank and type your password(if you ran the CD) or admin(default).
