WRT54G v.6 Periodic Disconnects. HELP!

The issue i am having is interesting. I have the WRT54G v.6 wireless router. I have a strong cable connection wired directly from the modem to my desktop, currently. I purchased the router so that my roommate could make use of the wireless cable connection as well.
I set up the router, wiring my desktop to it, while my roommates laptop picked up the wireless connection without an issue. However.. about 20-25 minutes afterward, the connection for BOTH the wired desktop and wireless laptop would be interrupted/disconnected for a few seconds to minute, then reconnect. This happens continuously. This is problematic as a main reason for the connection is to game online. I will be having a wired LAN gathering of sorts for the same reason this weekend, so i am hoping to understand why this is happing, and resolve the issue.
Linksys tech support has been unable to diagnose the issue, nor even provide me with a competent understanding of the problem i am describing, being as outsourcing has resulted in the support staff simply reading a scripted log. I have called them three times, and they have been of no assistance.
The wired and wireless connection worked and was recognized with the base default settings of the router. I altered the settings as per the support staff's directions to no avail. I also ran the wireless notebook through the linksys "easy access setup" program, also to no avail.
I have since then disconnected the router, and once again, i am running my desktop directly to the modem. I have not experienced a disconnect since, so i am certain the problem is router-based.
Can anyone provide some insight?

EXACTLY MY SAME PROBLEM!!!!
Im using the same router version 6, 1 WIRED computer, 3 Wireless LAPTOP connection, And disconnection is relgular, although it jus reconnects autmatically, i jus find it ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!
contacted Linksys, who is now offering me support she directs me to
"Please follow these steps:
1. Connect one computer directly to your router.
2. Access the setup page of the router using the router’s IP address on the address bar of your Internet browser. The default router’ IP address is 192.168.1.1. Just leave the username blank and type admin for the password. If you have changed the router’s password during the initial setup, you may use that password. If the router doesn’t accept the admin as well as your password, try to reset the router for 5 seconds.
3. Under Setup tab, locate MTU.
4. Set MTU to enable then enter 1300 on the size field.
5. Click on Save Settings then click Continue.
6. Click on the Wireless tab. Change the SSID if it is still linksys, change it to your family name to avoid network interference.
7. Change the channel to 11.
8. Make sure that your SSID Broadcast is enabled.
9. Click on Save Settings.
10. Shut down everything for 2 minutes.
11. Power on starting from the modem then the router and lastly your PC."
Stll i get disconnection problems which i emailed her back and now hoping to get a reply.
So if anyone can give it a try and see if it works, otherwise im gonna giveup and just return the **bleep** thing!
**bleep**!
I was having the same problem.
WHAT THE LADY SAID WORKED!! I GOT MY CONNECTION BACK, SIGNAL STRENGTH AND CONNECTION AT 100% AND STAYING!!!!!
I would suggest everyone give the instructions above a try cause it seems to work.
But even thought it did work, technical support you guys need to reaize this is a issue and a problem and needs to be resolved.
As my connection kept coming in and out I was watching the signal strength and it kept going from Good to Poor and back to Good and on and on and on. AND MY ROUTER IS ONLY 30FT FROM MY WIRELESS COMPUTER. THIS NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED!
Thank you.

Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. • Flex 2 14 periodically disconnects from the network on Wi-Fi.

My brand new Flex 2 14 periodically disconnects from the network on Wi-Fi.  This is pretty unacceptable.  Other PC's in the house are not experiencing the problem, so it's difficult to blame the router.,
I have a Broadcom 802.11N Network Adapter device with driver version 6.30.223.201, which is the latest on the Lenovo site.  I am running Windows 8.1, as provided on the system.  I've installed Windows updates and some other software, but have not otherwise changed the OS.
I have seen other users with similar problems, but no fixes for Broadcom.
Any ideas anyone?  May be a "back to lenovo" thing.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I called Lenovo Tech Support and they had me try something that seems to be working.  Apparently there are *two* drivers available for the Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter: one published by Broadcom, one published by Microsoft.  My system *was* configured to use the Broadcom driver, Lenovo Tech support had me change to use the Microsoft published driver.  I have not had a disconnect since.
To change the selected driver:
0. Make sure you have the latest drivers from the Lenovo support site installed.
1. Launch "Device Manager"
2. Expand "Network adapters"
3. Right-click on "Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter" and select "Properties".
4. In the properies window, select the "Driver' tab and click "Update Driver..."
5. In the update window, select "Browse my computer for driver software"
6. On the next page, select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
7. On the next page, you should have a choice of selecting from one of two drivers.  Select the one from *Microsoft*.
8. Click "Next" and complete the driver install.

• WRT54G: Frequent, but intermittent Disconnects

I have a WRT54G that I've been using for almost 2 years now.  For the most part, the router works great, even though it will occassionaly drop my computer's wired connection and often drop my Xbox's wireless connection.  More recently, I have upgraded to Windows 7 and am experiencing very frequent, but intermittent disconnects which mainly appear to be on the wired end.
Steps I've Taken Thus Far
Updated NIC drivers
Updated Router Firmware (Apparently 8.00.7 is the latest for my router.)
Reset router to factory configuration and reconfigured
Searched all over the internet for a solution
Basically, this is what happens:  I'll be online, usually playing a game or trying to d/l a patch for one and things will be great, but out of nowhere, the router's power light will start blinking and the little SES button (that Cisco one that lights up) will shut off - this is when I lose my connection.  Sometimes it's just temporary and the router will cycle, the powerlight will go solid and the Cisco light will turn back on.  Often, I have to unplug and plug the router back in to get it to cycle.  I don't think I'm losing connection to my cable modem as the Internet light stays active, but maybe.  So it seems to me that I'm mainly losing connection on just my own network.  The strange thing is that sometimes I can go for hours without any trouble but sometimes I can't make it 10 minutes without losing my connection 3 or 4 times.
Any help?

Since you have done all the settings on your Router, and already upgraded the firmware on your Router... As you have mentioned that after a period of time, the power light on your router starts flashing and at that moment you are disconnected from all your computer...
Well i think its a problem with the router itself. I hate to say that but I think its time for you to get a New Router.

• Cant connect Wrt54g with SBC! please help

Ok i just got the at&t internet package in the mail and i already set it up. I got a linksys wrt54g router and it just doesnt want to work. I get to the part where it says connecting to the internet but it just never connects. I went to dslreports.com and it says i actually have pacicific bell - SBC. I used to have sbc adn even then i could never intstall the router. Someone please help me. oh yeah its a motorola modem.

Try following settings .....
Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet
Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as “admin "" all in lower cases and then
click on ok.
On the main setup page select the "Internet Connection Type"
as "PPPoE”. Then provide the username and password provided by your ISP
(Internet service provider) for your connection(Example:
[email protected])- Select the "Keep Alive" option and choose the

• WRT54G v.6 intermittent disconnections

I've been using my WRT54G router for a year now and it always worked pretty well. But about a month ago i started to lose internet connection every now and then (maybe 1 or 2 times each day). Now the problem occurs approximately every hour. I updated the firmware yesterday hoping it would resolve it but it didn't.
The connection always goes away for about 5 seconds and then comes back from itself. I witnessed that the orange light illuminating the Cisco Systems "logo" turns off during the time internet is disconnected. Also, i think the problem comes from the router itself because everything connected to has the same problem simultaneously (my computer, wich is connected to it with a ethernet cable and every other device connected to it wireless like other computers/game consoles). When i connect my computer directly to the modem (without using the router) it works perfectly well so the problem does not come from it. I searched the web for people having a similar problem but i didn't found anything like it.
If anyone out there has a suggestion it would be very appreciated because i tried a lot of things and i am now thinking about buying a new router.
PS : Sorry for my english... it's far from perfect

After you perform a firmware upgrade on the router, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then re-configure the router. If you have not resetted the router after the upgrade, then reset your router...  Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for another 30 Seconds.Plug the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button for 30 Seconds.Release the reset button.  To re-configure your router click here , Also change the Wireless Settings and try to connect...Check if this helps...

• Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router keeps disconnected

Hi, My wireless router WRT54GS keeps on disconnecting without any reason. I have also changed the channel to 11 but still the same issue. It connects for 1 minute and then it stops working even though the signal says "excellent strength" and all the bars are green.

Hmm. I seem to be having a similar problem (see my thread). Check the cable that is pulugged into the back of the computer. That is where my problem lies. The computer doesn't seem to be reading it. If i get some info, ill help you.
EDIT:You have to check the IP address of the computer connected to router. If you are getting an IP of 169.254.x.x, then the router might be defective.

• Error message when trying to disconnect-help!

I just traded in my really messed up mini for a nano. I installed the new software, and plugged in the nano, and the playlists seemed to transfer over fine. itunes says it is ok to disconnect, but the nano says do not disconnect. So I clicked the eject button and itunes gives me a message that says "the ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application". What the heck does that mean? No other programs are open on the PC. I am afraid to just unplug it and break it even before I've even gotten to use it! HELP!!

Shutting down your computer with the iPod connected is fine. The message you're getting just means there's something using your iPod, and it won't stop the communication, so you can't disconnect.
You could also try this:
Open MyComputer
Find your iPod under Devices With Removable Storage
Right-click on it
Click "eject"
See if this allows you to disconnect... if not, just shut down your computer, and then you should be able to disconnect your iPod. It's hard to say if you're going to get this message everytime you want to eject the iPod... it depends on what it is that's using the iPod.

• My WRT54G suddenly stopped working please help.

Hi, i recently configured the security of the router, and then when i pressed the auto connect on the router it can no longer send a wireless signal... i tried to press the RESET button on the back, it should return it to the factory setting right? but when i connected it it wont give me good ip addresses it says limited or no connectivity, even if i manual set the ip. then try to access the home page it would not work.
i have some ideas how to fix this but i dont know if it is possible or not. :
1.) reset the router from a computer without accessing the page.
2.) go to a service center (if there is an available in the philippines...)
3.) overriding the firmware without accessing the page

Hard reset your router for a minute...
Press and hold the reset button for 1 minute...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 1 minute and re-connect the power cable...Also make sure that your computer is set to obtain IP automatically, disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page...Now check if you can access your router set-up...
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1...
If you get the above mentioned ip address and gateway then you should be able to re-configure your router...If you get an IP Address of 169.254, then reset the router again...If still you don't get the above mentione ip address and gateway then  you should give a static ip address on the computer...
Click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>>Network Connections- Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1...Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...Now try to ping the Default Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press enter, see if you get 4 replies...If it does not then try to diable and security softwares/firewalls on your computer and try to ping it again, you should get 4 replies...

• WRT54G losing connection periodically

My setup:
WRT54G Router
Firmware Version v4.30.5, Apr. 27, 2006
Bell Sympatico DSL
PC with hardline to Router
Laptop with wireless connection
A couple times a night, no matter whether the laptop or the PC is being used, I will lose connection to the internet.
Normally, the Link/Act is blinking, the Full/Coll light is solid green and the 100 light is solid orange/yellow. When I lose connection, the Link/Act light goes solid. If I wait for 3 or 4 minutes, it will usually regain the connection, although occasionally it takes a while longer.
I have tried cloning my computers MAC address, but that didn't seem to help either.

Crap.
I got this unit from my father-in-law, who got it through his work. And he no longer works there, and his job has the receipt.
I guess it is time to go router-shopping then.
I need both wireless and wired (for laptop and PC, respectively). Any suggestions??Message Edited by Marcel on 09-05-2006 08:14 PM

• WRT54GS2 - Random Disconnect help.

I am baffled as to why my wireless internet disconnects.
It seems that after visiting certain flash sites, I will lose internet connectivity. I have no idea why. If anyone has any ideas as to why, I would greatly appreciate the help. I will provide any information I can.
It also seems to be just on my pc. I am currently able to post off of my lap top with no problems. When I lose connection it goes from connected to limited connectivity. Most of the time, I can disconnect and reconnect and it will be fine for about an hour or so when it disconnects back to limited connectivity. This will persist for about a week. Then, everything goes back to normal it seems, but I play games online persistently and it is very frustrating being disconnected mid game. Any feedback or ideas would help, thank you.

login to the Router setup page and below change the MTU size to 1350 and click on save settings, then click on the Wireless tab and change the wireless channel to 1 or 11 and click on save settings, then click on sub tab under wireless "Advance Wireless Settings" and Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

• WRT54G V8.2 Wireless disconnecting

Hello, I have recently updated my firmware for my router and ever since (might be a coincidence or not) my wireless will disconnect and my router's page is also unaccessable at that point. I can still see my wireless network and when I attempt to connect it just stays on connecting for a long time.
I have another computer connected by wire and this computer never loses connection. When my wireless stops working that wired computer can no longer access the router home page either.
The whole problem is quickly fixed by unplugging my router (power cord) and replugging. At that point everything returns to normal for a while (6-7 hours possibly more or less). It starts all over by my wireless disconnecting.
Securities I have setup:
My laptop is quite old so the only wireless protection I can offer is WEP128 (Which is enabled)
I also have MAC filters on the wireless only enabling computers with a MAC address in the list to connect to the router.
Please help not sure what the problem is and it is getting a little annoying.
Thanks

You need to hard reset your router for 1 minute...
Press and hold the reset button for 1 minute...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 1 minute and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...Also do the Advance Wireless Settings...
On the router set-up click on Wireless tab and change the channel to 11 and save the settings...
Click on the subtab "Advanced Wireless settings"
Change the Beacon Interval to 75...
Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304...
Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 and click on "Save Settings"...

• WRT54GS network assistance needed! Help!

I really need some help understanding network terms. I just setup my WRT54GS using tips I collected from these forums. I changed the IP address to 192.168.2.1 and cloned the MAC address to my PC. My main PC has my DSL modem>WRT54>PC LAN which connects perfectly to the internet. This is where my problems/network understanding starts. I have SSID name and WEP security setup using the router. Other than internet none of my other 2 computers wireless (Laptop& a HTPC) are recognized for file/printer sharing amongst the entire group. All computers have file/printer sharing enabled. I have run the network setup wizards on the PC many times and named it differently each time for ID purposes. I enabled security on some and left others disabled, but no where on the PC can I find where these networks exist. In addition when I turn on my laptop I
find most of the networks I created as available connections. My main PC doesn’t see my linksys nor will find my HP Ethernet printer connected to the WRT54. Please help!

Disable all the firewalls on the computer even the windows firewalls and make sure that the workgruop is same for all the computers.

• WRT54GS cannot be configured, need help!!!!

Ok.. I am getting so lost.  I will try to explain the best I can what is going on.  I just bought the Wireless G router with speedbooster and put the CD in to set it up, did everything it told me to do on the screen as far as pluggin cables in yada yada. When it came to step 4 of 4 it said "Waiting for Router". Then after about 2-3 minutes it comes back saying the following:
YOUR ROUTER DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONNECTED PROPERLY
Error 322: New router or Gateway not detected
Follow these steps:
1) Make sure you are connecting your new router and not your old router
2) Make sure the ethernet cable from your computer is securely connected to a LAN port on the back of your new router
3) Click retry to try installing your router again
Also, when I try to retry the setup without unplugging anything it says this:
Linksys EasyLink Advisor Setup Wizard has discovered that you are already connected to a router. Many people choose to replace an existing router with their new Linksys Router.
I can connect to the internet without configuring the router!!! It isn't secure though!  I want to configure my router so that it is secure and I don't know what to do to fix this.
I am using a Comcast provided modem, RCA model # DCM425
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Remember I am a noob so please don't confuse me more with words I don't understand.. Thanks
One more thing.  When it is "Waiting for router" the 2 computer icon comes up at bottom of screen saying acquiring IP address so I double clicked on it and it would be connected with the IP address 192.168.1.1 and then all of a sudden it would say Invalid IP address not connected.  I really need help here!!!

Ok, I'm not 100% sure I can help you, but I will try.
First thing, find the setup disk that came with the router and use it as a coaster or a frisbee or something because it is almost completely worthless.
Until you have completed the setup of the router, I would suggest using a computer that is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable. The reason being, if you change any settings wirelessly, such as security features, you will be disconnected and unable to access it again. So use a computer that is directly connected for setup.
The IP address you saw in you system tray is the IP address of the router itself. You actually need this for your router setup. Open whichever web browser you use and type in that IP address, nothing else. 192.168.1.1 A login screen should appear for you to enter your user name and password. Leave the user name blank and for the password enter "admin" without the quotes. This should bring you to your basic settings screen for the router.
From this point, I'm sure exactly how you want to set everything up. If you're not very familiar with networking or routers I would suggest you change very little. If you desire security for your network (which I suggest) click on the "Wireless" tab at the top of the screen. This should bring you to basic wireless settings. From here, you can change the name of your wireless network, change the broadcast frequency and enable/disable wireless broadcast. You can change these if you like or leave them alone whichever you prefer. I do suggest changing the name of you network (SSID) so you can tell which one is yours when you try to connect. It gets confusing when everyone in your neighborhood has a Linksys and all of the names look similar.
Once you're done here, next click on the "Wireless Security" tab within the "Wireless" tap. Make sure you are click "Wireless Security" and not just "Security." From here, you can select the kind of wireless security you want to use. I'm not highly informed on which of these is the best, but WEP is probably the strongest security you're going to need anyway, so I would go with that. After you select WEP you get a few more options. For "default transmit key" just select one. Then in the "WEP Encryption" drop down, select "128 bits 26 hex digits." 64 would most likely be ok, but 128 bit encryption is definitely better.
In the next box "Passphase" enter a word or short phrase that is only known to you an click generate. The four boxes below will now have you WEP keys. I delete all but the first key to keep things simple, but whatever you want to do is up to you. After you delete the other three lines, select the key in your first line and select/copy it so that you can just paste it into the box in network options when you're connecting to the network. Regardless, I would also write this key down somewhere. If you have multiple computers in the house you have to enter it on each and every one and it's a pain to go back and forth. Click save settings. You're pretty much done. There are other things you can do to beef up security, but this is the most basic and it's still quite strong.
If you are looking at playing games frequently or anything like that I would go to PortForward.com
Any other questions you have, you should be able to google I think. I hope I can help. Good Luck.
