WRT54G V.7 makes internet connection instabile

Hi all,
For two weeks, I've been using my new WRT54G V.7 router. I bought it, because I a got a 20Mb/sec connection and I wanted to connect my PC (wired), my Xbox 360 (wired) and my Nintendo Wii (Wireless Wifi) at the same time.
Though internet in general is very fast, I've noticed that the router makes the connection very instabile. When I play online movies (mpeg, quiktime, etc.) or when I down- and upload torrents via ABC, the connection drops to almost 0 KB/Sec every now and then. That causes (in the case of movies) stutterings in sound and picture and (in the case of ABC) up- and download rates of 0 KB/sec. After a while, this even effects the 'rest' of the computer, for instance when I play music with Winamp, it gets audio stutters as well, when I'm using internet.
I checked and when I'm not connected to the internet or when I connect the ISP's modem directly to my computer, there's no problem.
I tried everything I could. Upgraded to firmware 7.0.4 correctly, optimalized the MTU settings, switched between static and dynamic IP, etc. But nothing works.
Does anyone have an idea what I can do about this problem? I have the fastest internet connection availabe at the moment, but can't really enjoy it this way. So please, anyone?
Patrick

I have/had exactly the same set-up (20 Mbps downstream) and stability issues. I have installed the latest firmware for my Intel Pro 2200BG client which has resolved many of the problems. I further decreased the number of concurrent threads on my torrent client. Next to this I have enabled SSID broadcast and changed many of the new parameters in the Intel driver (broadcast power, long tx preamble etc). My stability issues have now been resolved.
There is another thread under my name that lists exactly all the changes I have made.
Hope this works for you too,
Regards,
Olaf

  • My WRT54G v5 router loses internet connection frequently

My WRT54G v5 router loses internet connection frequently. Sometimes occurs when you enter a web or sometimes every few minutes, but without a pattern. I have W XP Pro with SP3 and I have a pc wired to the router and sometimes 2 notebook with Wi-Fi. What could be the problem?. Thank you very much.

I have upgraded the firmware to v 1.02.8 and reduced the MTU to 1350 but after a few minutes of doing that I had the same problem... The router reboots itself, again and again and again...
It's possible to run some diagnostic utility that somebody can check ??
It's possible it would be a router failure ??
I note that sometimes is ok and when Entering some web pages the router reboots itself and I loose my internet connection, but others, the router reboots for no apparent reason...
I dont know what to do...

  • Is there a way to make internet connections work faster?

My wife has a Macbook and I have the MB Air and we are both running off Time Capsule. Many times when we are both using the internet it becomes a crawl, especially if TC is backing up or we are trying to use Mail or trying to view something on a web site.
I have seen some software out there that claims to speed things up and makes the connection work more efficiently. Does anyone have experience with this? The one recommended to me was IPNetrouterX which has good reviews but is very expensive.
    Thanks

It's a bandwidth issue - the size of the pipe, which you cannot work around. if your network is 100 Mb/s and you have three equal users, each gets about 33 Mb/s. You can't get more out of a network than you put in. The only solution is more bandwidth, a larger pipe. A 1 Gb/s network will be faster if yours is 100 Mb/s.
You can use a 1 Gb network if all your devices support that speed. Of course that will be your LAN or WAN speed. The speed to the internet is dependent on the bandwidth your ISP is providing you.
Don't confuse internet speed with local network speed. Your "internet" speed is constant, it's the sharing that is slowing the LAN.

  • Can't make Internet connection

I have been using Airport Express to connect to my stereo system for itunes and radio streaming (with Airfoil) from my desktop with no problem. I thought this set up would also allow me to connect my laptop to the internet. The laptop shows the AE network as an available network and I am able to establish the connection - at least the laptop says I am connected but the browser comes up blank. The desktop shows airport on and broadcasting. I have the Airport Extreme card installed. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi,
I have an Airport Express set up in my home. I use it to make my broadband connetion and my printer wireless. I have owned it for about six months or so.
The problem I have is that it works perfectly, until it decides to stop connecting to the internet. When I start my computer, there will be no internet connection. When I inspect my Airport Express and broadband modem, they both seem fine, my Airport Express still has a steady green light, but to get it working, I have to unplug it from the power supply and leve it for a few minutes, then reconnect it. It then works fine, for a few weeks till it happens all over again. It is a minor problem, but one that should not happen. Other wireless routers don't operate like this!
At first I thought it was a problem with my Airport Express, till my Dad got one also and the exact same thing happens to him!!
This makes me think it is some problem with Airport Express in general. Is there any updates for the software in the Airport Express itself? A firmware update or something? It is obviously some hardware problem, because all the people I know with one, all suffer from the exact same problem!!!

  • Two WRT54G, two networks, same Internet Connection

If anyone can take the time to educate me in how to effectivly stack routers to share one internet connection but set up two different networks I would really appriciate it.
I want to set up an open wireless network for customers but have my POS and Cameras on a seperate network that people using the wireless cannot access.  I have two routers, and have tried using different subnets but cannot get it to work.
Is there any step by step instructions on linksys's site?  I cannot find them.
    Any help is greatly appriciated.
    Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
    I have one WRT54G v5 and one BEFSR41(sorry don't know the version).
Right now I have the BEFSR41 acting as the router and the WRT54G acting as a wireless access point.  I have a hardwire connection going from port 1 on the BEFSR41 to port 1 on the WRT54G and have DHCP disabled in the WRT54G.  Right now anyone connected wirelessly to the WRT54G has full access to my network.
    What I want to do...
    Modem------------BEFSR41-----------Point of sale registers/Camera DVR
                                              |
                                              |
                                              |
                                              WRT54G(((((((((  to any customers PC
    BEFSR41 DHCP 192.168.1.100-150 Subnet 255.255.255.0
    WRT54G DHCP 192.168.x.100-150 Subnet 255.255.255.xxx
I want my Wired network to be on a different IP range and Subnet than my Wireless so that customers cannot get onto my wired network.  (I think its called segmenting a network or something like that.)
Is this possible with linksys's stuff or do I need to step it up a notch and get something like a nomadix?
    Thanks again for the reply.

  • New Update Only Make Internet Connection Problem Worse?

Since getting this thing, I've had the same random internet drop issues alot of people have reported. It was annoying but not unbearable as drops only happened a couple of times a day. Yesterday I anxiously ran both the OS and Time Capsule updates hoping this lingering issue would have finally been addressed, instead those, I am now lucky to maintain net connection for more than 5 minute at a time. My modem (Moto 2210) lights are all as should be and show no status change when dropped, but the airport status has the time freeze and within a minute or two it renegotiates the connection and the cycle repeats.
I am so annoyed with this thing. I jumped from PC to Mac about 6 months ago because of the notion that Mac stuff "just works" and while my notebook has been bulletproof, the Time Capsule (dropped twice while typing this message) and AppleTV leave a great deal to be desired at this point.

The concept of Mac " JUST WORKS" is still very much true. As for Time Capsule. I think its something that Apple need to refine it. It is really making my hair white !!
But I still like it!! haha.. The idea, the concept and the look !! Apple just need to tweak its stability.

  • WRT54GS Won't Establish Internet Connection

Trying to connect from just a cable, and not from a modem. Using the EasyLink Advisor, and it will not connect to the internet, no matter what I do, or what PC I use. Connected properly. Just trying to use the router for wireless access in a hotel. How do I install it, or configure the PC so it will connect?

    Unplug the router cat5 cables
Reset the router so the IP of the router is 192.168.1.1
    Don't use the disk
Plug in a cat5 to an ethernet port ont he router and your laptop/PC that you are using to configure it.
Log into the router thru internet explorer at http://192.168.1.1
    username/password should be admin/admin
Change the "Local IP" of the router to whatever you want it to be.  ie 192.168.2.1
    Router will reboot.
Plug a cat5 from the wall to the WAN port on the router.
If your laptop/PC is set for DHCP it should get an IP int he 192.168.2.x range with a gateway of 192.168.1.2
DNS should come thru if the router is set with DHCP too...
you should be good to go.

  • Can access internet when connected w/ethernet cables in router, but WRT54G says it can't connect

I have my router, modem, and computer all set up correctly. I can access the internet in this setup but with only the computer that is connected with the ethernet cord to the router. Yet, my WRT54G router can't connect to the internet in the Linksys easy setup nor through the http:192.168.1.1 method.
When I changed the internet connection type to PPPoE, my modem was unable to access the internet. I also changed the IP to 192.168.2.1 but that didn't help. I have performed several power cycles. I have upgraded the firmware.
I changed the internet connection type back to DHCP, so I am able to come on this website, but I can't set up the wireless since the router says it can't connect to the internet. Please help!

Start it from scratch...Reset your router and re-configure it...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Also make sure that your computer is set to obtain IP automatically, disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page.
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this
To change the Wireless Settings click here and Enable Wireless Security
Now see if you can locate your wireless network on your wireless computer and attempt to connect...

  • Having a problem getting an internet connection through WRT54G at school

I recently purchased a WRT54G router to try and set up a wireless network within my dorm. The internet connection is already being provided by the school itself and comes to me through a box that provides the internet/phone line/and cable. The problem I am having is getting the connection to go through my router. When I plug the router into the unit that is giving my computer the connection currently the router recognizes some sort of connection because the "Internet" light is on. I can't follow the directions of installation exactly because I don't have the actual modem in my room. Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem are welcome.

    hi ,
if your computer is connected to linksys router through the wire in that case what u can do is ..
you can swich off your modem and linksys router ...after that swich on only your mode and than wait for the lights to get stable once the lights are stable than swich on the linksys router ..and this should fix your issue
    or
if you are connecting to the linksys router wirelessly than connect any of your computer to the linksys router through wire and than on your computer open a internet page and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 you will get the linksys setup page make the wireless settings and than seacrch for the wireless network on the othe wireless laptop you should find your network than try connecting to that network once u r connected to that network u will be able to go online ..
if still the issue remains same let me know  u r network setup

  • WRT54G no internet connection issue

    Hi,
I've been using a WRT54G router for a few years and it's worked fine until now.  I recently installed AVG8.5 on to my computer and now the router can't find the internet connection.  I have my compture wired to it.
I hooked the mode directly up to my computer to make sure the modem wasn't the issue and it worked fine.  I checked to make sure the local settings were on autodect and the lights on the router are all lit correctly.  I have uninstalled AVG8.5 and the router still keeps saying that it cannot detect an internet connection.  I've tried reseting the router and reinstalling the software, but no dice.
I did manage to get it to broadcast its SSID, but when I tried to connect wireless it won't allow anything to connect to it.  So, I'm assuming something is blocking it on my machine.  Any advice?  Thanks!
                                  -Ashes

After resetting the router I assume the router is not properly confiured and that's the reason you have lost the Internet connection on all the computers...
You should leave the AVG8.5 un-installed and re-configure your router...

  • ITunes RADIO is not working.  "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so -  iTu

    iTunes RADIO is not working.
“iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.” Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so …
iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.
    ===============================================================
NOTE:  no password for iTunes exists in my Keychain. Is this a problem?
Apple ACCOUNT ID, and iTunes ID password, works but not to access iTunes with my healthy internet connection.
Apple store id It works via direct internet connetion but not through iTunes.  Very strange.

  • N8 apps make unwanted internet connection automati...

    Dear users,
I have had my N8 for a week now. It's beautiful, but there is only one issue I cannot resolve.
With my other Nokia's (also Vodafone as provider) I was able to set any internet connection manually by selecting "Always ask" in the phone's connection settings to prevent the phone from making expensive internet Vodafone connections, especially when being abroad.
With my new N8, Vodafone has secured my internet connections (Vodafone Live), so I am not able to edit the connections anymore and make adjustments. I noticed that with many apps from the Ovi Store, my phone immediately selects Vodafone Live as an internet connection automatically, There is no way to change this or to prevent the app from making the connection to Vodafone Live. Even when my home Wifi network is in range.
Anyone with the same problem? Is it a Vodafone issue? Is Vodafone trying to push users to use their internet connection by protecting the connection settings for Vodafone Live?
    Thank you so much...

    hi everyone,
first of all i want to say im polish so... sorry for my english ;p

i figured out its propably by nokia ovi store.
ive found that my n8 have the same problem as yours, i mean its connecting automatically to internet by network with priority #1 in INTERNET group. If its WiFi, nokia will connect by this WiFi if its Network Package Connection, nokia will connect by this one.
Shutting down (by widget) scanning for WiFi or disconnecting gives no improvment, still connecting about 3 sec after disconnecting.
    Remove/Editing/Adding again connections
    gives no effect
Restarting phone does not help. Widgets are offline.
    setting -> connectivity -> admin.setting -> package data -> when needed/when exist
    gives no effect
Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Settings -> Data use in home country
     Automatic/Always ask/WLAN only/Home network only
    gives no effect
Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Settings -> Switch to WLAN
    Only know WLANs/Manual
    gives no effect
    Any ideas ??
FOUND IT !! Thank you ISMOK it was mail synchronising, after turning off every day it has stopped connecting.

  • WRT54GS - Internet Connection Stopping/Hanging

    Hi,
Just got the WRT54GS, had it about a week.
Whenever I hit an internet site, it will load about 80% of it and stop or hang. If i refresh the page it will finish downloading it (most of the time).
This is happening to all computers accessing the router, both wireless and the one that is wired (Ethernet) in.
I know it's not the internet connection itself, as I can use it without going through the router without any issues.
I've upgraded the firmware and played with a few of the settings without resolution.
Any ideas would be helpful as this is getting fairly annoying especially as getting a Linksys was supposed to solve all my networking issues.
    My info:
    Router - WRT54GS v7
    Firmware- 7.50.5
    Connection - DSL
Computers - 6 total (although normally 3 at the most at a time) all running XP sp3.
    Encryption - WEP 128
Wireless Network Mode - G (all computers are G compliant)
    Thank you for your time.
    Troy

    Thank you for your reposes.
Tried the above suggestions to no real success.
My latest shot is that i've changed the encryption key to WPA-Personal.
It goes great guns for 2 minutes ... then sits for about 20 seconds and then goes great guns for 2 minutes.
    Very frustrating.
Is it possible that I got a bad router to begin with? Is there really any way to tell?
Is it possible that one of my neighbors have a router that interferes with mine? What would cause the 2 minutes on 20 seconds off?
    Thoughts?
    Thank you
    troy
