WRT54G V3 help

Hi, I recently got a new laptop from HP with windows 7 64-bit. I have a WRT54G V3 router for a couple of years now. Everything that I have connects with this like the itouch, playstation and my old laptop but the new one has unreliable connections. Whenever Im close to the router, it stays on the network for about 10 minutes then turns off. Whenever im far away it shows a full signal with the nrouter but I cannot connect with it can someone help me? Thanks.

Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Under the Wireless tab, change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz and click on save settings...Under the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

  • WRT54G v6 Help needed!

Okay, I have a wrt54g v6 router that I use for 2 computers and an xbox (xbox live). Im getting an intermittent signal on all my devices and I have no clue as to why. All of my devices are connected via ethernet cable so I know its not wireless interference and i've changed everything I can think of that would cause this problem, firmware, MTU size, etc. I even created a static ip for my xbox. But the router is still getting degraded signals, the only thing I havent really done is uncheck all the boxes on my router firewall but to me that wouldn't do anything but allow more access to my already crappy network. If anyone has a solution or knows whats going on that would be so so helpful, thank you very much.

You might need to upgrade the firmware of the router as is normal for most WRT54G v6 routers.
    Verify the router firmware version
    1) click on start ---> run (type in cmd)
    2) on the DOS Prompt (type in ipconfig)
► take note of the default gateway value
    3) open up Internet Explorer and type in the default gateway value
    4) username: leave it blank password: admin
    5) go to the status tab: verify the firmware version
    ► if it's below 1.00.9 (i.e 1.00.0, 1.00.1, 1.00.4, 1.00.6, 1.00.7) then the router definitely needs an upgrade.
    To upgrade the firmware:
    1) download the firmware from www.linksys.com/downloads Look for your product model number from the list (i.e WRT54G v5)
    2) save the file on your desktop
    3) access the 192.168.1.1 page again
    4) go to Administration - firmware upgrade
    5) browse for the downloaded file and upgrade.
► Press the reset button of the router for 30 seconds and powercycle (i.e turn on and turn off the router).
► Reconfigure the router as per ISP settings.

  • WRT54G - Pls Help

I have a Linksys WRT54G and I'm having a strange problem. It will work fine on my desktop (which is Windows XP) but on the laptop (which is brand new and Vista) it'll work fine for awhile, but then some sites won't work. When it turn it on in the morning, everything's fine again, until a few hours later, when it will start screwing up again. I'm fairly sure that I didn't install it right (when I put the cd in it says unable to connect) - PLEASE help - I'm a freelance writer and need access to my computer.

Try changing the Advanced Wireless setings.
    Beacon Interval : 50
    RTS Threshold : 2304
    Frag. Threshold : 2304
Regarding Vista, there are no specific settings on the router.
Try upgrading the firmware on the router.
    Reset the router.
    Reconfigure. Hope its work.

  • WRT54G install HELP needed

I bought the WRT54G so I could go wireless in the house. I run the CD and it goes "do you want to replace your existing router or keep it?" Near as I know I DON'T HAVE ONE but that isn't an option, so which do I pick? There should be a "do you simply have a modem plugged into your PC and bought this go to wireless?" type option (something I'm betting is extremely common). Also, once you select one, you cannot go back and change your mind...you have to exit the program and start over. Which of these cryptic options do I choose??
(Mod note: Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

Disregard - got help from an online tech spt.
FWIW that install CD needs work, as it was detecting a router that doesn't exist and the tech spt explained that sometimes it is known not to work properly.
PS:  in the interests of hopefully saving someone else the time and hassle I went thru, here are the steps I was given which worked fine:
    1. Connect the PC to the port one of the router then restart it. (This PC should be the one that can get online if directly connected to the modem).
    2. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer or any browser(Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
    3. When the browser opens, type http://192.168.1.1 on the Address bar and click on Go or press the Enter key. The log-in window will appear.
    4. Skip User Name and type admin on the Password field, and click OK.
    5. Configure the wireless settings. Click on the Wireless tab and have these:
    Wireless Configuration: Manual
    Wireless Network Mode: Mixed
Wireless Network Name (SSID): Bill/Anything that you would want to name your network.
    Wireless Channel: 1
    Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable
    Save the settings.
    6. To secure your wireless network, Please click on the Wireless security sub-tab that is still under the Wireless tab and change the Security mode to WEP and have these:
    Default Transmit Key: 1
WEP Encryption: 64 bits 10 hex digits
Skip the Passphrase field. Do not click on the "Generate" button.
Enter any 10-digit value in the Key 1 box. (You may use all numbers but you can only use letters A to F. No dashes or slashes and special characters). This will be your WEP key (MINE: ssn123123)
Leave Key boxes 2-4 blank or empty.
    Save the settings.
    7. Click on the Setup tab, then click on the MAC Address Clone sub tab, enable it and click on "Clone your PC's MAC" then save the settings.
    8. On the Setup Tab --> Basic Setup sub-tab, look for the LAN IP which is 192.168.1.1.
    9. Change the IP address to 10.10.10.1 then save the settings.
    10. Connect the modem to the router's Internet port and wired PCs to the router's numbered ports.
    11. Power cycle. To do a power cycle, please power off the computer, the router and then the modem. After 2 minutes, power on the modem, the router and then, lastly, the computers. Wait for the lights to stabilize before plugging the next device.

  • WRT54GS Need Help

Hi, I'm currently using a new Dell computer with a cable modem and Linksys router, WRT54GS with speed booster. The main computer is hard wired to the router and I have internet .  I have been trying to connect to the internet on my other wireless Dell computer which is using a USB network adapter #WUSB54GS.  My wireless icon on the wireless computer shows an excellent connection, but I cannot connect to the internet. I have spent several hours on line with the Linksys Technicians trying to solve this problem. I was told that the router was a problem and I have returned it for a new one. Both computers are using windowsXP. Does anyone have a clue? Could it b e the new computer or modem preventing the wireless from getting connected to the internet?
    skihouse

no...the modem cannot prevent the wireless getting connected to the internet..as one of your computers is already online through the router, that means the modem and the router are functioning.....it could be the adapter that is not installed correctly...
as you have windows xp, try this :
uninstall the adapter completely and install only the drivers....allow windows to manage the wireless connection...also ensure that you do not have any static ip assigned to that computer..
let me know if it helps you....

  • WRT54G - Need help asap!

First and foremost, thanks for helping...
I've been running into a problem with my WRT54G.  When I try to access the admin page at 192.168.1.1, it will ask for the password and accept it, but then the page loads VERY slow (sometimes timing out), and if it does load... a lot of buttons/options are missing/misplaced.
This is trying to access it from any of the 3 computers connected to it (one wired, two wireless).  The internet connection itself is blazing fast.... not problem there.  But I need to get into the admin page to change a few of the port settings.
My ISP is Comcast, and I have ping'ed the 192.168.1.1 address with good results.
    Anyone have an idea?

Try to adjust the browser settings...Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...

  • Wireless WRT54G problems help please

A few days ago i set up a FTP server with my Wireless WRT54G V.3 wireless router. Then the next day i wasnt able to connect to it. I tried  everything. But couldnt get it to work. So i just went into the router setting and put factory settings. After that, the router wasnt able to give anything that connects to it a 192.168.?.? ip. Everytime i connect to it i get an ip of 169.I tried everything... and then i thought to myself, i messed up my router. So then next day i got another used router from one of my friends... its a wireless WRT54G V. 5 and when i try to set it up.... I get the exact same problem =\..... anybody has any idea... ive tried calling linksys but i was on hold for like 40 minutes and i gave up..... can anybody help?

If you have an extra ethernet cable you may reconfigure the router manually. For step-by-step instructions you may check it out from homesupport.cisco.com. You may also download the setup wizard from this website.

  • Wrt54g installation help

hi, i have just upgraded new windows vista home premium from windows xp. i tried to install my purchased linksys wrt54g ver 6 router. and as i install i keep getting this error message.
The instruction at 0x0043cf50 reference memory at 0x00000091 keep showing up,
if possible can someone please help me fix this and sucessfully install the router so i can go online from my computer. thanks in advance,

The problem may be in your Vista installation. Did you choose to upgrade your XP installation, or did you opt for a clean install?
A clean installation is preferred, as it will wipe out everything and start from scratch. Often, there may be problems when you are only upgrading on top of your old operating system.
The bottom line is your problem is likely not with the router.

  • WRT54GS Need help, interesting security problem

    Hi All,
New to this community, so I hope that my description is understandable. Plus, I've been reading with ernest, am totally confused and wish someone could just tell me "this is how you fix this: Step 1..." but it never seems to happen that way.
    1. WRT54GS Wireless Router, (not sure of the version because my setup page says one thing and the bottom says different) was originally setup with a Gateway Desktop, longer than 5 yrs ago.
    2. Currently the host computer is a Dell. We have 1 wireless laptop, 2 netbooks, 1 iPod, and 2 wireless printers in a home network.
The main problem is getting online (I never know how many devices will try to do something at the same time) with the router (keeps saying that the "Security" is Open"). I've tried to setup new networks, resulting in the same problem. Is it possible to just remove the Dell from the network or could the wireless laptop become the host computer? And could someone explain to me how to do that? The last time I tried to change the security on the router, (I believe that WEP is what the Dell set it at and I was trying to change it to a higher level), I got a notification that not all the devices were the same, security could not be changed. Help, I just want us all to be able to use a secure network!!

If you are not sure of the version why don't you post what is printed on the bottom and what is shown on the setup page?

Where does it say "security is open" exactly? What page? Where? When?
Go to the setup page of the router. Wireless and Wireless Security. Post your current settings on those two pages. That will show how your wireless is configured.
    We'll take it from there...

  • WRT54G to WRT54G setup help

I have a DSL connection into the WRT54G (firmware v2...), which is then connected by Ethernet to the PC (Win2000). Works fine. Now I want to add a PC (XP) in the basement office and happen to have another WRT54G (firmware v1.02). So I run Ethernet into the second router (using port1, not Internet) from the basement computer. What do I need to set so the two routers "connect", allowing the basement computer to share the internet connection? Should the second router's Internet lights come on when it sees the first router? Thanks!

Honestly, I would suggest heading over to http://www.dd-wrt.com and browsing through the offerings on their table. I have two WRT54G's and a WRT54GS. One of the WRT54G's is used as my access point. the other two (the WRT54G and the WRT54GS) are used as client bridges. The DD-WRT v23 SP2 (08/04/06) std Edition of their firmware works EXCELLENTLY! I have it installed on all three of my routers. One of the routers (client bridge mode) is host to 4 computers, the other (client bridge mode) is host to another 3. All of which connect (nearly) transparently to the router I have in AP mode. simple set up too. upload new firmware, click the status tab (of the router you want to use as a client bridge) click site survey, then click connect. POOF! you have an instant and (once again, nearly) transparent bridge. In this mode however, the computers IP's will not be shown on the AP, only the (client bridge) routers IP and MAC. So take that into account when your setting up security. (such as MAC filtering and WEP.) Hope this helps. But keep in mind, As others warn you, you should listen. There is very little in the way of "live tech support" when you upload this third party firmware, AND you void the warranty if you use third party firmware. However, there IS E X T E N S I V E documentation on everything (and feature) provided with the firmware. (DD-WRT's Firmware at least, not sure about some of the others, Found the DD-WRT firmware, liked it, stuck with it) You'll also get some other features on the upgrade... such as how many dBi you wish to have. (WRT54X's are capable of up to -251mW, which is the = to 26dBi. however, you will need to add some heat sinks to accomplish this, as it WILL burn out your router. I wouldnt go above 70mW, in any case, as you begin to cause RF interference and violate FCC rules. Now, for the WRT54G that are V.5 and V.6, there is a special way to do this, and yes you STILL can upload third party firmware. Once again head over to www.dd-wrt.com and do some research. There IS a walkthrough for flashing the V.5 and V.6 of the WRT54G's (GS's) with their firmware. If this is information overload, then honestly you're better off getting a couple linksys WUSB54GP - Wireless-G Portable USB Adapters and using them instead. Good luck, and I hope this helped.

  • WRT54G v5 Help required!

    Here's the problem.
My router was working fine with an NTL modem, then I moved house, new broadband provider and the router just will not work. The broadband works fine when connected directly to the computer, but insert the router, nothing! During set up the router is detected fine, the internet led is lit on the router, but I get a message saying that it cannot detect an internet connection. Have tried with a couple of differernt modems to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

With some ISP's, they set you up using a specific MAC address (the MAC address of your PC ... it's supposed to prevent you from setting up a network and sharing it at home ... whatever!).  For example, AT&T did this up until several months ago.  Your Linksys may have had this setup when you had the other broadband provider.
Login to your router, go to the "Setup | MAC Address Clone" tab and see what your entry is.  If it is "enabled", there's a possibility you configured this with your old broadband provider.  Check with your new broadband provider to see if they authenticate based on a MAC-specific address.  If not, then "disable" it.
Give that a shot.  You can also go to your broadband provider's support site and see if they provide you information or tips on how to setup a home network.  They may have Linksys-specific information there, or at least information on key setup configs behind their modem.
    Good luck.
