WRT54G v5 Connection Fluctuations

What I would like to ask Linksys is: Is it normal for the connection to keep fluctuating between 18 to 54 MBPS continuously? I would assume not.
Please inform. Thanks

Afraid not. Router in next door in my bedroom. Laptop (wirless) is in living room. Cordless phone is 900 MHz (that doesn't interfere). Microwave only does, when it's on.
I had mentioned that the connection CONTINOUSLY keeps fluctuating, i.e., non-stop. I monitor it on the Windows Task Manager. Just as I click on the website, between the time I click, to the full opening of the page, it has changed speeds already.
I have experimented with changing transmission rate on router as well as Broadcom adapter to be set at 48 MBPS. Settings on both sides are also excluding a-type networks, only b-g included. Now I get a steady stream of 48 rate but what's happening is that connection gets reset every hour-2hours or so. This, I guess, is logical because when the network cannot maintain that high rate of 48, network connection drops.
I could set a lower rate but that defeats the purpose of buying the wireless g router.
Have to figure out a way to maintain the high rate.

What is the IP address you are getting on this PC? Check if you can ping to this router with its IP address (default IP: 192.168.1.1) if not then try resetting it for 1 min by pressing the reset button. Once you get the ping then you can try configuring the router.

  • WRT54GS wireless connection becomes unreachable every 3-6 minutes

I just got signed up with COMCAST (TV, Internet, and VOIP). The Linksys WRT54GS is connected to the COMCAST Internet-VOIP box. Everything is working fine except the wireless. I bought the Linksys WRT54GS and when I run "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" from my latop via the wireless the connection becomes unreachable every 3-6 minutes. When I "refresh the list" from the laptop the connection is working. The wireless is using WEP security, the strength during the test is 3-4 bars. The problem has been seen in the same room (7 ft away) with 5 bars. I've not yet contacted COMCAST because at this time my thoughts are that I've misconfigured the Linksys. Allen

    Allen:
If you purchased the router elsewhere, save the call to Comcast. They won't help you.
Try changing to different channels in the router. There may be interference in your area that causes the drop. I would point out that a dropped ping occasionally is normal, although when it negatively impacts your ability to stay connected, you'll want to find the issue.
The default channel on the router is 11 I think. Try going through all the channels from 1 on up and running each one for a period of time. Your wireless card doesn't need any changes made; it should reset itself to the new channel within a few seconds.

  • I had a problem with my WRT54GS not connecting to my inte...

I had a problem with my WRT54GS not connecting to my internet until I cloned my old routers mac address. I was using a BEFW11S4 which was bullet proof and worked for several years until I changed to Wireless G. Upon purchasing the WRT54GS and setting up all parameters exactly like I had before I could not make any connections, wireless or otherwise until I cloned my mac address to the same address as my previous router. Apparently my ISP had that mac address registered and would not properly perform DHCP even though all other paremeters were correct. I read lots of messages here on line with issues with the WRT54GS connecting and this fixed my problem outright. If you upgrade from a previous generation router (Linksys or otherwise apparently) copy your old routers mac address and clone it to your new router and you should be able to connect. This fixed my problem after several hours and days of troubleshooting. Good Luck Karnage

As an alternative to using MAC address cloning, you can phone your ISP, tell them you have a new router, and tell them to reset their system to accept the MAC address of your new router.   This way, you won't have to remember the old MAC address, in the event that you need to reset your router to factory defaults.

  • [WRT54G] Random connection drops on hardwired computer but not wireless connections

I bought a WRT54G, it's a version 6 if that matters, using the latest Linksys firmware.
The WRT54G is connected to my main desktop and DSL modem, dynamic IP and PPPoE. I set the router with a static IP, there's WPA2 going as well.
I have a notebook and another desktop computer connected wirelessly.
The issue is that my main computer will seem to lose its Internet connection randomly for 15 minutes and then come back by itself.
The problem is hard to describe but I'll try:
Let's say everything is working fine, I go on www.someforum.com/forums and browse around then I go to www.bestbuy.com and click a few links.
Then the issue starts, I get a "Cannot find server" to sites I haven't visited yet in this session like Google or eBay. I can't ping them either. However, if I go to Best Buy or here, it still works fine. I can still browse the forums. So, it seems like somehow, if the connection is "cached," everything still works but I can't make new connections.
Also, during that 15 minutes when my hardwired desktop has the problem, my 2 other computers work fine over wireless.
I can access my router at 192.168.1.1 at all times.

Using the 2 procedures that you noted (answer ID 688 and 534) will get you port forwarding to a computer at a fixed LAN IP address behind your router.  This means that your desktop computer would have a fixed LAN IP address that is set in the computer itself, and not assigned by the router's DHCP server.  It sounds like the DHCP server is giving addresses to your other computers.
It is important to know what fixed LAN IP address you have assigned your desktop computer.  The reason for this is that Linksys has specific rules about assigning fixed LAN IP addresses, and if you don't follow those rules, you can get problems like the one you originally described.  That is the reason that I have pursued this question.
When you assign a fixed LAN IP address, it must follow these rules:
    1)  Any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range, which is typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149
    2)  The fixed LAN IP address must be consistant with the default gateway address, that is it must typically be in the form of 192.168.1.x
    3)  The "x" in item 2 cannot be equal to 1 or 255
So typically, a fixed LAN IP address must be in the range of:
    192.168.1.2     thru 192.168.1.99   or
    192.168.1.150 thru 192.168.1.254
assuming that you did not change your default DHCP server range.
So for example, if you assigned your desktop computer an address of 192.168.1.101, this could be the cause for your problem.  So what address did you assign to your desktop computer when you used the Answer ID 534 procedure?

  • WRT54G Net connection

I'm hung up on step 10 of the setup process. My laptop refuses to recognize that the router (a brand-new WRT54G) is connected, even though all lights on it and the broadband modem say otherwise. Internet Explorer won't let me access the Tools dropdown menu. Any thoughts?

  • Download speed veryyyy slow WRT54G cable connection

Hi there, i have a WRT54G router connected with cables. The wireless option is off in the settings in the menu of the router. I just downloaded a new firmware version 700.4 with was, if i should believe my friends , THE solution for my problems.. but its still very slow..
I have a cable modem from my internetprovider and have the most expensive connection a person at home could buy... if i connect my pc behind the cablemodem i can download with hundreds of kb/sec.. and a movie download is on my pc within a half an hour.. because i have more pcs i bought this router. so i can play online with more then 1 pc... if i download a movie when im connected trough the router.. ( cable modem----WRT54g-----pc/s ) then i can download with a smashing 5-25kb/sec, so the same movie takes about 4 days to be finished..
It must be something in the router...
And another thing when im downloading to much at the same time my router says bye bye.. and the only way to get it going again is pulling the plug ( power supply) and plug it back in. I dont understand this... i would thought that the router knows it limits and when its reached that....it keeps on going at THAT rate...even if the cablemodem or PC can transfer more per sec. ????!!!!.
Are there any settings i could try to make this thing work properly...
One more thing.. if the router crashes to often, ( by probebly to much downloads that are busy)... like mine did.... there comes a day it will not funktion anymore, like its dead...I had that 2 times allready, in the last 2 years. ( my internetcablemodem was still giving internet ) SO i went back to the store and got a new one on warranty but this happend 2 times allready....those guys will see me coming for the third time....in a few weeks/months..
    PLZZ HELP ME!!
I dont know what to do anymore
    Kind regards
    Diederik

As you had already upgraded the firmware of router .......reset the router for 20-30 seconds ......while holding the reset button .....unplug the power cable..... wait for 10 seconds ....... plug back the power & release the reset ....
After reset reconfigure the router ......open routers set up page using http://192.168.1.1  .... leave username blank & in password use admin.....
look for "mac address clone" ......... enable it & click clone your pcs mac...... click save settings.....
Do power cycle & see whether you are online or not............

  • Need help! Am wanting to use WRT54GS to connect single PC to existing network.

I purchased a WRT300N router and it replaced my WRT54GS. So the WRT300N is connected to one of my PC's and my modem. Now I want to use the WRT54GS to connect another one of my PC's to the network by connecting an Ethernet cable from the WRT54GS to my other PC. Message Edited by MercedesJim812 on 12-29-2007 03:58 PM

As both the routers are in different ends of house ....
I wil suggest you not to use Wireless Router at another end ..... but you can go for Wireless Ethernet Bridge .... WET54G
It will take connection from first wireless router & it is connected to computer using ethernet cable .....
So the ideal connection is as following:
    Modem ---->> WRT54GS  ))))))))) WET54G ---->>computer ....
                (wired)                  (wireless)             (wired)

  • WRT54g Losing Connection

    Hello.
I apologise if this is a known issue and has been posted before but you will understand the urgency when you read This.
I have had my WRT54g ver. 2 for a few years now and all has been running fine until the last couple of weeks. The signal fluctuates from 54mb to no connection and everything in between. I have made no changes at all and even if I put my laptop next to the router this still occurs. I have 2 PCs and 2 Laptops in the house and this occurs for all!
I have connected directly into the modem and connection is stable.
    The firmware version is 4.20.8.
Is the router knackered or is there a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

  • WRT54G Problem Connecting Wirelessly to Windows 7 Computer

I can connect to the WRT54G router with an Ethernet cable on a computer with Windows 7.  I have done all the basic things or at least most of them.  I can ping the router successfully wirelessly.  My router is old with firmware 1.02.5.  I use Linkysy EasyLink Advisor.  I suspect EasyLink  won't work for Windows 7.  I have tried to connect manually but when I put the encryption key in it says it is not valid.  I am using 128 bit WEP.  Help

I'd suggest you change your encryption to WPA or WPA2 because WEP is insecure, can be easily cracked. Here's the procedure.

It is not possible to use wireless router for any free wi-fi network ..... because the router needs internet connection at the internet port of the router ....

  • Can't get WRT54G to connect to internet

Have been using a WPC11 v.4 wireless router for a couple of years now.
Just purchased a WRT54G and cannot seem to get it to connect to the internet.
After spending over an hour with both Verizon DSL tech's and Linksys tech still no joy.
Have run through complete software setup while online with Linksys including several different setups.  Last instruction from Linksys was to call back Verizon and make sure my modem was set up as a bridge.
I did that and still no joy.  So I have hooked up the old router and bingo connection right away with no problem
    Help.
    elrodo

hi..if the old router works with the modem in bridge mode...i find no reason why it should not work with the new wireless router unless your router has an older firmware...
    you can try this out...
    http://www.linksysfix.com/check/FirmwareUpgrade/LinksysUpgrade.exe
this will help you upgrade the firmware on the new router and once upgraded successfully , reset it for 30 secs and then configure the router....

  • WRT54G Strange connection issue when wireless security is enabled

The model # is WRT54G v2.2 with firmware 4.21.1. I knew that my internet connection was good because I connected my laptop directly to the wireless antenna. When the antenna is connected to my wireless router I can't connect, wired or wireless. I decided to reset the router and program back in the changes that I have made. I checked for internet connection after the reset, it's there. Made more changes, still good. Then when I enabled wireless security using WEP the wired and wireless internet connection goes away. Any ideas to fix this. Can I go back to the previous version of firmware?

hi... go to ftp.linksys.com/pub/network and try downloading older firmware for the router and downgrade the firmware, after that reset the router back to factory default settings and reconfigure it...

  • WRT54G v5 Connection problem

    Hello!
Ive had a WRT54G v5 for awhile now.  And just recently I went out of town and had turn off my router.  When coming back and turning everything back on for some reason both wired and wireless components both have a connection then it loses the connection for awhile and comes back on.  Ive power cycled both the router and modem. Called my provider and they said it was my router after doing some diagnostic tests.  I tried to update the firmware and ive tried to restore to factory settings. Still it has a connection then it loses it.. Ive noticed on the modem when its not working that only the SENT light is flashing. (modem has power, received, sent, cable,pc)  So, im kindof out of ideas on what to do.. It is on AUTO DHCP and gets a ip and everything.
Any ideas on what to do? I really hope i dont have to get another router..

    Do the following steps:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.
    # Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your router's main/ basic setup page)
    # Then Click on wireless Tab select Channel to 6, 9, and 11.
#Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 75
~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304
    Then check the wireless status..

  • WRT54G losing connection periodically

    My setup:
    WRT54G Router
    Firmware Version v4.30.5, Apr. 27, 2006
    Bell Sympatico DSL
    PC with hardline to Router
    Laptop with wireless connection
A couple times a night, no matter whether the laptop or the PC is being used, I will lose connection to the internet.
Normally, the Link/Act is blinking, the Full/Coll light is solid green and the 100 light is solid orange/yellow. When I lose connection, the Link/Act light goes solid. If I wait for 3 or 4 minutes, it will usually regain the connection, although occasionally it takes a while longer.
I have tried cloning my computers MAC address, but that didn't seem to help either.

    Crap.
I got this unit from my father-in-law, who got it through his work. And he no longer works there, and his job has the receipt.
I guess it is time to go router-shopping then.
I need both wireless and wired (for laptop and PC, respectively). Any suggestions??Message Edited by Marcel on 09-05-2006 08:14 PM
