WRT54G v6 (1.02.6) - Excellent signal, POOR connection (24 or 11)

Hello, all.
I have a WRT54G v6 (v1.02.6) and a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, both in the same room; the laptop has a direct line-of-sight view of the router, which is approximately 15 or 16 feet away, sitting on top of a desk hutch which places it approximately 6 foot off the floor.
According to my laptop, the signal strength is excellent (all four bars are green), and when I first connect to it I have a 54Mbps connection; but within 20 seconds, the connection slowly drops to 48, then 36, then 24Mbps - sometimes it stays there, sometimes it drops to 11Mbps.
This is getting to be annoying.  I'm less than 20 feet away with a direct line-of-sight view, and I'm getting this lousy connection rate.  The only thing even remotely between the laptop and the router (aside from air) is a VCR (below the line-of-sight) and a TV (below and to the right of the line-of-sight) and they are both currently switched OFF.
It makes no difference if the router is facing the laptop, or facing away from the laptop.  Adjusting the angle of the antennae only brings the connection DOWN to 5.5 or 1Mbps.
I've adjusted the Basic Rate to ALL, no change.  I've switched between channels 1,3,9, and 11, no change.
What else can I do to keep the 54Mbps connection, since I'm this >< close to the router?  Or, at least so I can maintain a 48Mbps?  Anything less, I've wasted money on this router.
Thanks,
^_^

Reset your router and re-configure it...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router... After re-configuring the router for Internet Access adjust it's wireless settings...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
If it still drops then you need to update the wireless adapter drivers...

  • Excellent Signal / Unable to Connect to Internet

I have model WRT54G connected to my desktop and have a Dell Laptop with Vista.  The router signal on my laptop shows excellent signal but I cannot connect to the Internet.  A message appears stating something about a MPFP Inbound Filter Packet.  I believe this has something to do with McAfee.  Not sure if this is even the problem.   Would greatly appreciate any assistance.

I recently purchased a WRT54GX4 and have the exact same issues.  From my laptop, I can ping any website in the world under dos command line.  However, as soon as I try and connect with my browser, it clocks and times out.  I triple checked everything, started over, and still get the same symptoms.  The good thing is the symptoms are consistent and I am not the only one.  I will keep digging and let you know if I come up with closure.  Dave

  • Excelent signal streangth - No connectivity to WiFi...Why?

I traded in my iPod touch and picked up a new iPad mini 2 weeks ago (11-7-2012).  for the first week the Wi Fi was perfect for lack of a better word.  All of the 6 ussual routers I used on my day to day connected with great streangth and speed.  over the last week i have had increasing loss of connection even though I have excelent signal streangth.  At most not only my home router will connect for 30 second incroments.  The only router that will connect is at my local apple store.  This tells me that all of the fixes I have tryed as well as going to the Apple store to get my firmware updated was useless.  I have reset all the settings, reflashed done every router trick in the book, with no moble USB3 hardrives around.  I have erased Safarai cache and cookie cache. I have a feeling it is either software or firmware issue.  any ideas????

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Can see wireless network, excellent signal, yet no internet....Help!!

I have a wireless network that has been working fine for the last couple years.  About a month ago, I ran into this issue:  my laptops all see my network, register excellent signal, yet I can't do anything, access internet, my work VPN, etc.  I had unplugged the phone/DSL connection at the wall to do some painting, and it hasn't worked since.  I have a linksys router and worked with them to reconfigure it, but still no go.  Any ideas??
    Thanks!!

I can only connect to the internet with a wired connection to the DSL modem.  When I try a wired connection directly to the router, it shows a LAN connection 100.0 Mbps, packets in and out, but Page Cannot Be Displayed.  Similarly, my wireless shows connected, excellent signal, 54.0 Mbps, heavy packets in, but very little out and cannot get to Internet.  Is the router bad?  If so, why do I see that I'm connected both wired and wireless??  Thanks for your assistance!

  • My T40 shows connected to Wireless with Excellent signal strength but I can't open Internet Explorer

When I turn my T40 on it shows connected to my home wireless with excellent signal strength but I can't get the Internet Explorer to open and can't get to the internet.  Please help!

Just wanted to clarify what you meant in this post. If you entered the router's IP address as the static IP for the laptop, you would get the symptoms that you are describing. Try entering a IP that isn't normally used like 192.168.1.142. (That is assuming that your router IP is the default 192.168.1.1.)
If that isn't the issue, please tell me what ipconfig is returning on both the laptop and the desktop.

  • Have base station and added extender for downstairrs. Worked great upon initial setup, but now it won't connect despite an "excellent" signal. What's wrong? Thanks!!

Have base station and added extender for downstairs. Worked great upon initial setup, but now it won't connect despite an "excellent" signal. All i get is a blinking amber light; only get green if I bring it into the same room as the base. Both units are the latest models; purchased 2 months ago. What's wrong? Thanks!!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a minute
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for a few minutes
Now locate the AirPort Express about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage, and report on your results.
The more that you can minimize obstructions between the AirPorts like walls, ceilings, etc. the better the wireless will operate.

  • WRT54GS - all laptops in house have started losing connectivity

I have had this router working fine for a year to two and all of the sudden all of the laptops in the house have started exhibiting the same problem:
    - Laptops have very strong signal to the router and are getting an IP just fine
    - Attempts to connect over internet has started having lots of trouble that we've never seen before... sites either can't be contacted or when contacted never populate.
I  thought it was cable modem / cable isp issue but wired connection, while maybe a bit slow, is working fine.  I also downloaded and updated the firmware and that hasn't really helped.
If I dork around with the router settings -- change channel or just flip other random settings like SSID or password -- it will sometimes work for a while (minutes to hours) but will then after a while will get back into the same state where none of the laptops can connect to anything.
Is it possible that other neighbors access points near by are conflicting and trying to use the same channel and conflicting?  (I used to only see 1 or 2 others but now sometimes I see as many a 5 - 7).  If it might be that, is there any way that the thing can be configured to automatically change channel if it is noticing conflicts?
I've tried everything I can think of and would appreciate any suggestions..
    Thanks

I have the same router and the same problem -- I've also had this router for about 2 years and it has worked fine until now. I have 2 laptops with wireless connections and a desk top with a wired connection. A few days ago, the wireless connections stopped working (when I connect the laptops via a wired connection, they work fine). One laptop doesn't see the router at all. When I search for networks on the other laptop, the router shows up with excellent signal strength (100%) but when I try to connect, I get an error indicating that "the selected wireless network is out of range or unavailable".
I updated the router firmware to the latest version and used the SES feature (which seemed to do nothing other than lighting up the logo on the router itself). I still get the same error, but occasionally I also get an error indicating that the encryption settings don't match -- I've checked the setting and they do match (no encryption.
I tried the settings suggested by helm -- they had no affect. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome.
    Thanks.

  • Excel 2013 data connection to SharePoint list - charts won't update unless i manually refresh

I have a list called 'donations', and a connected workbook stored in an SP Document Library. On my sitepages homepage, I put an excel web part connected to a chart called "Total Donations".
I'm storing the Data Connection file on a Windows shared drive and I've given my Excel service account R/O to that drive. I'm using the Secure Store Service for my data connection, and it's refreshing data (but only when I open the Excel document).
I think this is because I've set the data connection properties to 'Enable background refresh', and 'Refresh data connection when opening', and 'refresh this connection on Refresh all'.
When I do a refresh from the web part on the home page, nothing updates :(  Anyone want to point me in the right direction?  I was going down the rabbit hole on PowerPivot services (thinking cannon to kill a fly), but couldn't find anything relating
    to this particular use case.
    P.S. I don't want to use the 2010 Chart Part because it's a POS.
Anyway, any direction would be helpful.  Thanks.

  • My Facetime keeps freezing and showing poor connection

I have recently purchased a new iPad mini and when i use Facetime the screen freezes to a blur of the screen image and "poor connection, video will resume when connection improves" appears on the screen. I have been through all the Apple support trouble shooting and this has not fixed the problem. I have tried the iPad on different internet systems and the error still occurs. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I was reading on a forum from the U.S. that this is a software problem effecting newer models as older gen 1 iPads are unaffected and still working.

  • Can I set up a wifi router to receive an internet signal by connecting it to a computer?

Can I set up a wifi router to recieve an internet signal by connecting it to a computer?
It seems to me that routers are designed to connect directly to the internet by programming their firmware with connection info.
I'd like to connect a computer to the internet, then connect a router to that computer.
Essentially, I want a internet signal that comes through a computer before being made wireless. Is that possible?

To connect the computer to the Internet you still need some physical component, for example a wireless USB dongle. So if you want to have the Mac connecting to the Internet and then share this connection to other devices using wireless, then you can enable Internet Sharing on the Mac and select to share its Airport (wireless) connection to the other devices (which turns the Mac into a form of access point). Then the other wireless devices can connect to the Mac and use the Mac's Internet connection, which could be a wireless USB dongle or an Ethernet connection to a cable modem.

  • Poor connectivity 3gs

Continual poor connectivity / drop outs with my iphone 3gs. At my wits end . I've done all Vodaphone have advised, restored, disabled- reanabled 3g changed SIm etc etc, They now sent another phone, just the same. There is a Facebook site dedicated to this problem, apparently it might be a software issue but Vodaphone are not admitting this. A Galaxy used side by side with it on Vodaphone has no issues at all ( its just not an iphone!!!!). Any suggestions? Do Apple care about this? I may have to desert the brand as I run a business  and need an efficient smartphone. Just thought I'd post on here before giving up, any suggestions?

    More things to try:
    Wi-Fi network issues
Make sure that your Wi-Fi network is set up using the recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.
If you encounter issues using a Wi-Fi network, use standard Wi-Fi network troubleshooting to resolve interference and other issues.
If you're using router, firewall, or security software that restricts Internet access, make sure that the ports documented in Using FaceTime behind a Firewall are open.
