WRT54G v6 Access Restrictions killing router connection

I've posted this question elsewhere, but an answer never came up, so I'm hoping to find a solution here
I have a number of sites I'm looking to block on my home network.  I set four access restriction policies (since you're limited on how many each policy can block), and it worked just fine.  The sites were blocked and everything went well for about an hour (give or take, I can't recall).  Then, my internet connection became erratic and started continually dropping.
The problem was that it wasn't my actual internet connection, but the router doing what appeared to be like a power-off refresh - the Power light would start blinking rapidly, and then it would either eventually reconnect on its own, or I'd have to reset the router.  No matter what, though, after enabling the access restrictions, I couldn't maintain a stable connection for very long. I know that these restrictions are the issue, because if I turned them off, it was fine.. and if I turn them back on, it acts up again. I downloaded the latest firmware, but that did not help.
The router didn't feel exceptionally hot (as I thought that might've been it), but the system allows for 10 policies to be enabled, so I don't think 4 should kill the whole system. I didn't see any type of other options in the access restriction policy panel that might be causing some type of internet connection interference, but I could be wrong. I'd really love to have these blocks in place, but I'd also love to be able to still access the internet at the same time
Any help or passed-on knowledge of what's going on would be extremely appreciated

It seems defective. But you can try reflashing the firmware and then holding the reset button for 30seconds after that. If that doesn't work then do a 30-30-30 reset. You might just have to use Open Dns if those suggestions don't fix the issue.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • WRT54GS Access Restriction for WiFi Connected Devices

I have the WRT54GS v4 running with the latest Firmware Version: v1.06.3 -- I am attempting to add Access Restrictions for a few MAC addresses and IP addresses (my kids iPod Touch and laptop).
I am simply wanting to deny total internet access from 9pm to 7am.   I have gotten it to work but ONLY for computers that are actually plugged into the router (cat 5 internet cables).  All the computers/devices that connect to the router via wifi do not seem to be restricted at all.   I am thinking this is an issue with the router in that it ONLY seems to apply the Access Restriction rules to those devices that are actually directly connected by hardwire.
Has any one else noticed this issue for WiFi connected devices?  Access Restrictions do not seem to apply to WiFi connected devices.
Please help -- I would hate to have to buy another router.

Are you sure you have enter the correct MAC address or IP address? Wired connections use different MAC and IP addresses then wireless connection...

  • WRT54GS Internet Access Restriction Doesn't Work

I have a WRT54GS wirless router and I can't get the internet access restriction capability to work. I'm trying to limit the time my kid's spend on their laptops, but the settings don't seem to take hold.
I have upgraded to the latest firmware (V4.71.1) for my router. (AT least I think it's the latest). I am using the Wireless MAC Filter for security, so only my family's PC's can access my wireless router (and I'm not broadcasting my SSID to the world). In the Internet Access Restriction screen, I have my kid's PC's MAC addresses in the PC list... same ones that I'm using to allow them to access the router, so I know they're correct. Then I have set the settings to 'Deny' internet access during specific time periods: 12:00 am - 1: 00 pm, 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm, and 10:00 pm - 11:55 pm. I have 'Enabled' and 'Save Settings', so they should be live. After all this, my kids can still access the internet... this just doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas? Shouldn't this work even without the latest firmware?

Open the setup page of the router,Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz..Under Advanced Wireless Settings..Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Also reduce the MTU size to 1350.

  • WRT54GS Internet Access Restriction Policies

I am finding it challenging to correctly define Internet Access Restriction
policies on my Linksys WRT54GSv4 wireless router. Documentation does not
describe multiple policies being enabled.  I think that multiple policies
should be from most restrictive to least, but I am not sure.
I wish to deny Internet access from my child's WII and PSP from 10:30 PM to
6:30 AM.  Also, I want to filter all hosts for blocked words and blocked
    sites.
    Currently, I have three policies:
    1) Child_Evening --
    WII and PSP MAC Filter
    10:30 PM to 11:55 PM
    Deny
    2) Child_Night --
    WII and PSP MAC Filter
    12:00 AM to 6:30 AM
    Deny
    3) SiteWord --
    IP Range 192.168.1.2 - 254
    Block Various Sites
    Block Various Words
I would like input as to the correct use of multiple Internet Access
    Restriction policies

create an Internet Access Policy:1. Internet access Policy - 1
    2. Enable.
    3. Child Access(Name of the policy)
    4. Deny range 192.169.1.252
    5. 10:30 PM to 11:55 PM - Everyday
    6. Blocked Services - All
    7. Port Range Start - 1  ;  End - 61000
    8.Save Settings
    9.Rebooting....
You deny all access through by all services to any sites.
Create the same policy with different number and name to deny access  from 12:00 AM to 6:300 AM..
Url Filtering Policy to deny adult sites, they're too much with different url address. You can deny most of them, but not all.

  • WRT54G Scheduled access restrictions

Sorry if it's a duplicate but I didn't find an answer.
I have WRT54G  Firmware 1.02.8; PCs- windows different versions.
I want to block some sites on weekdays 3-8 pm.
I setup policy 1 "Allow all" which allows full access alwais, for everybody
then Policy 2 "No youtube"; List of PCs: set; Allow; Days: Mon-Fr; Times: 3pm-8pm; Website blocking: www.youtube.com
policy 10 "Allow all"  full access alwais, for everybody
Within that time window 3pm-8pm it works as expected: ypoutube gets "Connection was reset", other sites are fine.
however outside of that time nobody can access ANY web sites getting timeouts.
    Any idea?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately no luck   No access outside the window.
It looks like it is taking most restrictive policy possible and since there is policy exists and nothing is saying access allowed outside my window it is blocking me.
    Any ideas of workaround?
    Thanks.

  • Overriding access restriction in router

I have three wired computers hooked into a WRT54G2.  One computer I want to restrict internet access.  User can go into Network Magic basic and hit the refresh key and it will override the router settings.  Any suggestions??

Peanuts, thank you for the response.  The user does not have access to the password for the router, he doesn't access the router, the settings in the router appear to be changed by hitting the refresh button in Network Magic.  The use of the Network Magic password does not apply when just accessing the Map screen and that is where the refresh button is located.  Any other suggestions would be appreciated.  thanks.

  • WRT54G v8 Access Restrictions

This should be an easy question...
What Access Policies do I need to enter so that the Internet can only be used from 5am-11pm.  I have selected the MAC address the policies apply to and everything.
I tried entering one policy that specified Enable 5:00 AM - 11:00 PM, but it worked intermittently.
Then I tried to enter policies to:
    Disable 12:00 AM - 5:00 AM
    Disable 11:00 PM - 12:00 AM
But it wouldn't let me enter 12:00 AM for midnight.
I got different answers for the live chat both times I contacted them...
What is the right way to do it?

    Disable 12:00 am - 5:00 am
    Disable 11:00 pm - 11:55 pm  (you can't set 11:59)
Today I tried to get on a few minutes ago (noon) and couldn't.
I deleted the policies, and here I am.
Has anyone been successful in getting these policies to work????
    What's the trick...

  • Downgrading firmware on WRT54G/access restrictions

I had a WRT54G.  Access restrictions worked.  I upgraded the firmware and the access restrictions no longer worked.
So after researching, it appears the firmware I upgraded to was buggy and the access restrictions didn't work with the new firmware.  I couldn't figure out how to downgrade back to what I had.
Called Linksys and ultimately they said they would send a new router.  I asked if it would have the old firmware that my router had previously, where the access restrictions worked.  Yes, they said.
New router arrives today.  Firmware is v1.02.2, June 7, 2007.  NOT the prior firmware.  Sure enough, the access restrictions still do not work on this router either.  I don't want to spend yet another two weeks trying to resolve this with Linksys.
Question:  Is there a way to downgrade to firmware where the access restrictions actually work for WRT54G?  If so,
what version should I downgrade to?
where do I obtain it? and
can I download the firmware and then install it using the administration/upgrade firmware tab on the router (even though it is a downgrade)?
Thanks very much for any thoughts.

Thanks for the suggestion, Badboy.  Unfortunately, although I could download the firmware and successfully load it onto the router, the access restrictions in that version do not work either.
It doesn't seem as though all prior versions of firmware are on the ftp site, ftp.linksys.com.  For example, I also have a wrt54gs v. 4 (speedbooster) with the same access restriction problem.  It currently has a firmware version loaded that doesn't appear to be listed on that website.  (I couldn't download prior firmware for that version that worked.)  So, perhaps prior firmware exists for the wrt54g v. 6 that is not listed on that site also.
Does anyone know if there is another site that has a more extensive collection of prior linksys firmware?
If not, I suppose I can call linksys again, but even if they send yet another router promising the old firmware on it, I suspect the message is just going to get lost between the promise made on the phone and the guy in the warehouse filling the RMA order.

  • WRT54G2 and WRT54G locks-up (freezes) when blocking web sites using Access Restrictions

I am convinced that a few Linksys routers such as WRT54G2 and WRT54G have a major issue when blocking web sites using Access Restrictions (Internet Access Policy). After a few hours of internet access by 15 wired users the Linksys locks-up and blocks all internet web access. The only solution is to restart the power on the router.
We are currently using a Linksys WRT54G2 v1 (firmware 1.0.04). We upgraded the WRT54G2 v1 firmware to the latest 1.0.04 version which did not resolve the issue.  NOTE: We were previosuly using a a Linksys WRT54G v1.1 (firmware 4.21.1) until the power supply blew a week after we started blocking web sites using Access Restrictions (Internet Access Policy).
Basically, we have a T1 internet connection and a hub connected to the Linksys router. We are trying to block several web sites such as facebook, myspace, etc. for 15 wired users. We do not use wireless connections.
This is the 2nd time it happened with 2 different models.
    Please help ASAP.
    Thank you,
    Lance
(Mod note: Edited post. Some parts off topic.. Thanks!)

Also,  you have already upgrade/re-flash the firmware of your Linksys Router you need to reset and reconfigure your router from scratch. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Access restrictions w/ WRT54G Ver 8 (Firmware 8.0.5).......

It seems that Access Restrictions are a bit of a problem w/ the Linksys routers. Well, here's my story to go with the crowd. Hopefully, someone at Linksys / Cisco can provide a solution.
I am wanting to set up access restrictions on my Linksys WRT54G Ver. 8 (Firmware 8.0.5). Following the "instructions", I built my access restrictions as follows:
    Policy 1
    Enabled
    Named for my PC
Edited List of PC's - inserted my NIC MAC address and saved the settings
    Set to "Allow" Internet Access
    Everyday
    24 Hrs per day
    Saved Settings
    Policy 2
    Enabled
    Named for my daughters laptop
Edited List of PC's - inserted her Wireless NIC MAC address and saved the settings
    Set to "Allow" Internet Access
    Sun - Thur: 07:00 AM - 09:30 PM
    Fri - Sat: 07:00 AM - 10:00 PM
    Saved Settings
    Policy 3
Enabled Named for my wife's desktop
Edited List of PC's - inserted her NIC MAC address and saved the settings
    Set to "Allow" Internet Access
    Sun - Sat: 06:00 AM - 11:00 PM
    Saved Settings
....then, I reset the router. Once up, I tried access from each PC...nothing. Couldn't get out.
Thus, I went back into the Linksys set up, disabled the access restrictions. Viola ! I'm back on-line with all three PC's.
Checked around the forum and found that some people had built a primary policy that included all of their PC MAC's or IP addresses and was "Enabled" and set to "Deny" Internet access 24/7. From there, they built out their access restrictions and, supposedly, they worked.
I tried that as well...deleted all the access restrictions. Reset the router and went through the entire router setup to be on the safe side. Built the primary "Deny" access restriction then my other three PC restrictions. And....it still didn't work.
Thus, I would really like to get this working so I can limit my daughters access. It's interfering with her school work so I want to lock her down a little bit. Friends are important to her but I've stressed that her education is even more important.
Thus, if Linksys themselves or someone on the forums can provide an answer, excellent ! If not, I'll look into another router that can do the job. I'd rather not do that, but if the Linksys won't perform this function, I'll have to. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Thanks for the reply. I deleted all profiles and built just the two specific for my daughters laptop and one for my wife's PC. My wife's PC is running XP SP3. It follows the access restriction policy with no problems. My daughters laptop is running Vista Home Premium. With the policies active, her connectivity was sporadic for about an hour before it just finally shut off her connectivity completely...well before the policy was supposed to.
Thus, I'm now thinking that thismay be a Vista problem to an extent as well(Gee....who would have thought that !?!?!?!?).
I disabled the IP 6 protocol just as a precaution. Still no access. And when I disable the policies on the Linksys, she's back in service.
    Any further suggestions are appreciated.

  • WRT54G - Cannot access internet but iMac airport says internet connection is fine... what's wrong?

I use a WRT54G wireless router connected to Mac. All of a sudden, I became unable to access certain websites on my iMac, such as Facebook and Apple homepages. But i can access Yahoo website. I tried resetting my linksys setup but it doesnt solve the problem. When i access my iphone via wifi at home, i am also unable to go into app store, facebook app, and emails with images won't load. I also cannot link my iphone to itunes on my iMac. What happens on my computer when I surf the internet is that the page just loads halfway and stop "responding". But my imac airport says that my internet connection is fine, however my access has become very "restricted". Can anyone tell me what's happening and how to resolve it?

To resolve difficulties accessing some websites when connected to a Linksys router you should check the following.
    Checking the router’s security settings
    Checking your computer’s security settings
Security on the web browser is set too high
Configuring the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on the router
    Opening ports for secured sites

  • Connecting two WRT54GS to the same (wired) router (non-linksys)

Due to some security issue I have to connect two WRT54GS to the same wired router.
Do I connect the first WRT54GS to one port of the router and the second one to another port?
And is the connection on the WRT the ethernetport or the internetport?
And can I reach both the configuration screens or do I have to change the
adress of one of them to e.g. 192.168.1.2 ?
    Regards,
    hENK.

I will suggest you to connect the LAN port of wired router to LAN ports of both WRT54GS  ........  Th connectino to WRT54GS is Ethernet Port ......
Regarding the Ip address of WRT54GS ..... change the Ip address of first wireless router from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2 ........make the DHCP service disabled ....
For the other router the Ip address would be 192.168.1.3 ...... DHCP service again disabled .........
For accessing the set up page of both router use the new Local Ip address.........on the explorer address bar ......

  • WRT54G Access Restriction Time /Day Problems. Need Help!

    Hi,
I have a WRT54G wireless router. When I set the access restriction time to DENY everyday from 11:00pm to 6:00am, it displayed that "The end time must be bigger than start time!". It is from 11 at night to 6 in the morning. How else do I set it? I even upgrade the firmware to v4.21.1 but it still does not work with that time setting.  I tried to set to ALLOW everyday from 6:00am to 11:30pm and it accepted the settting but it just applied the restriction right away without waiting for the right time (after I enable it, none of the laptops can access internet even its only 9:10pm).. The time in the linksys setup page is correct as well as all my pcs. Please help! Thanks.

The Access Restrictions feature of a Linksys router allows you to limit Internet access on your network.  You can deny certain computers’ Internet access or block certain applications and services.

  • Access Restriction - Internet Connection Policy (between two times)

I want to say something about the Access Restriction.
I set the policy for allow internet connection for one of my LAN PC's. For example, I set the policy to ALLOW internet connection EVERY DAY  from 8:00PM to 10:00PM. Starting with 10M internet connection stops. BUT, after a few minutes I do a power circle (turn OFF and turn ON the router) and I have internet connection again. For me, allowing internet connection from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM means  to have internet connection ONLY BETWEEN THIS HOURS, not before and not after.
In my opinion, this is the same situation with two DENY policies for internet connection, one from 12:00 AM to 8:00 PM and other from 10:00 PM to 11:55 PM (for the same PC, of course).
Why POWER CIRCLE broken this policies ?
ps - sorry for my English.

    @sunwatcher,
If I set a policy for my little boy PCs ... for allowing internet connection from 4:00PM to 6:00PM (for example) ... after 6:00 PM internet connection stops and he turn OFF and turn ON the router (power circle)  and after that he have internet connection, from then for a long time ...
I am from Romania, and I set time zone on GMT +2 (Bucharest time zone)
I insist with this problem because I want for him to use internet only between two times. Outside this time frame I want him to do their homework.

  • WRT54GS router connected, but not detected.

I have my WRT54GS wireless router connected just like the Easylink setup guide told me to. It goes through the steps up to the point that it tells me to verify that certain lights are on. They are, so I click next. Here's my problem. On the next step, the computer attempts to detect the router, but fails. I can still connect to the internet through the router on my wired connection. On my wireless conection to my PS3, it obtains an IP address, but can't connect. On my wireless connection to my other computer, it finds the network, but can't connect.
I called Linksys tech support and was told it had something to do with my modem and I had to call my ISP. I called my ISP and they said it was a problem with the router.
I know none of the hardware is faulty, because it worked when the computers were in opposite positions. That leads me to believe it is some setting on this computer, but I have no idea what it could be.
    Can someone help?

Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
    click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
    button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
    - Click on enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address .....
