WRT54G v6 router cuts out

WRT54G v6 router suddenly cuts out several times each day, using it with wired connection on two computers. No problem when direct wired to the modem.  Is this router failing? How to fix it?

Before taking a sledgehammer to it *smile*, I'd suggest resetting it to factory defaults (press the recessed "reset" button for about 30 seconds, and then release it), and then also power cycle it (pull the power cord for about 30 seconds, and then plug the power cord back in).  You'll have to log into the web GUI and re-enter your settings after this, since resetting the router will have changed all settings back to factory defaults.  But this may well help your router get back on track.
If this doesn't help, hold the sledgehammer for the moment, and report your results back here, please.

  • Wireless Router cuts out at the same time every day.

I'm having an issue with my WRT160N router.  I'm noticing that my internet connection cuts out for about 5 minutes every day in between 5:30-7:30 pm.  Without fail, every single day, I can count on it going out for about 5 minutes during this time.  The desktop, which is wired, remains working during this time.  I'm at my wits end here, since I'm an online student, and this is my best time to schedule quizzes and exams.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Is your network is secured?
If the network is not secured than put some security on the router or else if the network is already secured then try to increase the security level by WPA or WPA2.
Also change the network name to some unique name.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box.
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...

  • Zeppelin airplay from windows iTunes 12.1 cuts out

ok, this problem is driving me nuts. I have a stream URL setup in iTunes 12 on Windows 7. I also have a B&W Zeppelin AirPlay speaker (up to date firmware). I can airplay from iTunes to the speakers. Sometimes (not all the time) the stream play just stops with no error. The indicator goes from the Pause button to the Play button. So, I run some tests....
Change iTunes speakers to local. Cut out does not happen.
Reboot router - cut out continues
Run the same stream from my iPad to B&W - no cut outs!
This leads me to believe it is not the stream itself. It is not iTunes or Windows alone and it is not the network or AirPlay.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Any help appreciated...

Try Can't connect to the iTunes Store - Apple Support.
And if that doesn't work go for a full tear down and rebuild as follows...
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

One weird thing: the drive never mounts on the desktop, the only way I can see it is to click on the TC in 'shared devices' in finder sidebar.
That's normal. A network drive won't mount by itself. You may want to add the drive to your login items and/or the login items of your boy's account.
He came over to update his iPod tonight. Now the library is inaccessible. It says that his account is not authorized for the folder.
Is that a USB drive? How have you defined access to that drive in AirPort Utility? If you set it to "Secure Shared Disks" "With accounts", you'll have to add his account.

  • My router keeps cutting out

So basically we have a standard router and one or two wireless connections at a time, every other machine is shut down so we only really have two at a time, so overloading our router is not the problem. Every half hour or so it cuts out, and we have to reset it every evening every half hour, it's tedious,
It's is the holidays so is there less Internet for more people on the street,
What could cause my router to fail and how can I fix it...

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
to help the wireless connection you can try downloading inssider3 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • IPad cuts out and stutters on AirPlay music but iPhone does not?!

Hi folks, hope you can help with this problem, it's a little weird.
I bought an Apple TV a few days ago and have been enjoying streaming music from my apple devices onto the hifi system connected to the TV.  It works great except for one particular use-case, which is really frustrating.  Basically, I can do everything from the Apple TV, stream HD content, Netflix etc. all good.  From my iPhone I can do everything over AirPlay, stream music from iTunes, from Spotify, stream high quality video from YouTube or off the device itself, all works perfectly.
On my iPad 2 however everything works EXCEPT streaming music, it's bizarre.  I can stream a high def video from YouTube onto the iPad and AirPlay it over to the ATV and it never misses a beat.  I can mirror my screen onto the TV and stream games like Real Racing HD with no issues or lag whatsoever.  However when I try to stream music either from iTunes or Spotify from the iPad it stutters (cuts out) every 30 seconds or so, making the music intolerable.
The weirdest thing is that I can queue up the same track on my iPhone 4s and on the iPad 2, play it from the iPhone and it works perfectly, pause that, play from the iPad and it's a complete mess.  Similarly, when music is stuttering and cutting out on the iPad, I can switch directly to the YouTube, or BBC iPlayer app and stream high def video over AirPlay with no sound or video problems, then switch back to the music - back come the cut outs. It's driving me mad, I want the iPad to be the device everyone uses to play music from, especially for parties, but at the moment I have to get my phone out every time.
So it's not a bandwidth problem or a wifi signal problem (because video over airplay is fine) and it only affects music and it only affects the iPad.
    Any ideas?!?!
I should state that all the iOS devices have the latest apple software and I have already tried resetting the iPad, the ATV, my wifi router etc. etc.

    "Sonos" your Airplay
    Hi,
This observation elicited a Eureka moment. After months of problems with our airplay I had worked through almost every suggestion on the net to little or no avail.
As a result of this post I reconfigured one of our access points as a dedicated airplay network. Brilliant. We have now had 2 weeks of perfect airplay.
If you are reading this, you are probably fairly tech savvy. You therefore probably have an old router in the garage, shed or attic.
Get it out, dust it off and connect it to your network as an access point (Ethernet cable and a good internet search on your router). Set it up on an empty wireless channel as "*****airplay" or whatever suits you and connect the airplay clients (airport express, Apple TV, airplay speakers etc.) to that. Keep everything else on the original wireless network.
Interestingly, this is how Sonos have approached the wireless music solution.
This has worked brilliantly for us, I hope this helps others in a similar predicament.

  • No broadband for days after suddenly cutting out l...

    Hi all,
I'm hoping you can help me with a very frustrating issue I am facing. On Friday 13th Jan, at 1pm and without warning, my BT broadband connection died and has not yet come back (so 4 days and counting).
I am an IT technician by trade and normally I am able to resolve any issues with these things myself. However, this time I exhausted all options (filters, lines, different router etc) and had to call BT's (not very good) offshore call centre, who use their wonderful training to read through a script asking me if the power is on
Anyway, long story short, my Fault was logged but nothing done. So I called back on Saturday, same script (even though I've been through it already...) and at the end of the call he says he'll escalate and next level support will call me on Sunday morning - apparently he had booked me in for a callback between 9 - 11am. And you can guess what happened - nothing, no phone call, nada.
So again I have to call the wonderful offshore call centre and go through the bl**dy script AGAIN. I've done it I tell him, but "Sorry Sir I must check these few things" **bleep** it. I'm losing my rag here and i am a very calm person by nature.
They have no idea what's wrong with my broadband. I tell them it was working on Friday 1pm then it suddenly cut out. Days later it's still not back, so there is a problem and I know it's not in my house.
My friends down the street have broadband with Zen and Plusnet and their connection is fine. So all otehr ISPs are working OK in our area.
My neighbour is with BT Broadband, like me, and his connection is also dead!
So the problem is not in my house! Even then they're sending an engineer down ...I expect he won't turn up though, but even if he does I can't imagine what he'll do in my house, because I'm fairly certain the problem is not there.
No communication to tell us what's wrong, or that BT are aware of the problem and working on it and will have my broadband back on x date etc.  No record of it on BT's Service Status page or on 0800 169 0199. I can't believe how poor their service is. When I moved to BT I thought I was paying more for a better service, for a one-stop-shop that wouldn't let me down. I wish I'd done my research properly!
What can I do to get my broadband back?
Can I cancel my contract mid-term and move to another ISP which is working in my area?
Please help, I'm so **bleep** stressed over this as it's preventing my wife and I from being able to work at home.
Just for information, I'm in post code area TW19.

  • Why is my Apple TV cutting out when watching TV and Films?

Hi there, will try to provide as much info as possible but let me know if more is needed.
I have purchased the newest Apple TV (March 2012) recently, and have noticed that it cuts out when I'm watching films and TV shows, but never when I listen to music or the radio. My friends have also noticed they cannot play youtube videos off their iPads onto the apple TV. When it cuts out, it does not say "cannot connect to iTunes" or anything similar to that, it just returns to the home screen and then we can select the computer and TV programme and resume playing as normal. This happens every 5-10 minutes during a show/film though and does get incredibly annoying.
Originally I felt it would be a network problem. We have BT Infinity and the Home Hub 3.0, and I am aware that lots of people have issues with this. However this problem doesn't happen on any other device, nor when playing music. It is specifically when watch movies and TV shows. I have actually swapped the home hub device for a Netgear Cable Router back and forth trying to see if it ever made a difference, and the same problem is still happening therefore I do believe it to be a problem with the Apple TV.
I have checked the troubleshooting advice for the Apple TV and followed that and nothing seems to have helped (unplugging various bits, making sure i'm on the right channels etc.).
In short I have literally no idea what could have happened and what to do about this, and before I actually rang apple I wanted to know if anybody new anything about problems like this and how they can be resolved.
    Many thanks.
PS it is also worth noting that on our homeshare, we can no longer access one of our friends iTunes, despite it being visible it never loads and is invisible to the Apple TV. This also baffles us and we are not sure if it is related!!
Can;t think of any other details but let me know!

I have three Apple TVs at home (one 2nd Gen and two 3rd Gen).  I have not had this issue.  Worst thing that happens is it will not load my content from iTunes after waking it up, so I reboot the Apple TV and that fixes this.
My Dad has a 2nd Gen and it has started cutting out or dropping during playback of movies from iTunes and Netflix.  I tried restoring it over WiFi and also directly from his iMac running Lion and the version of iTunes previous to the latest that changed the iTunes layout (Not sure of the version), but it would fail saying the download was corrupt.  I even downloaded the .ipsw file and tried manually restoring that way, but it failed as well.  I purchased the USB cable for Apple TV to do this.
I just took it home tonight and tried restoring on my iMac running Mountain Lion and the latest version of iTunes and it worked.  I will bring it back to my Dad's and test it there.  I will post the results.
Maybe try this and see if it works.  I noticed that doing it through iTunes that it said it restored the latest version of OS for Apple TV and also the Firmware.
None of the Apple TVs mentioned have been Jailbroken, so not sure if this would be causing issues for anyone else.  Just trying to rule out anything I can think of.
I didn't get a chance to try this next step, since restoring from my iMac worked, but this was going to be my next step:

  • Apple TV Airplay Unbearably Cutting Out after Update

    Hi All,
I have an ATV v3 on a wired ethernet connection to my router (gigabit ethernet) on a 20mbps ADSL line.
Ever since I've had it it's been very poor for streaming over wifi, can only just handle MP3s from iTunes and videos are unwatchable. This is coming from multiple sources - iPhone, iPad, Macbook pro. Music is intermittent at best with dropouts every few minutes and often cutting out all together requiring the reselecting of the Apple TV as the output.
All of this so much so that I have to revert to the good old tactic of actually plugging in my iPhone to the stereo or Macbook to the TV. So archaic.
However, since I live in an apartment with lots of wifi signals I figured it was probably because of that. So, I hard wired in the Apple TV over ethernet and since then it HAD all been working much much with no dropouts and almost watchable.
However, after all the updates, I'm back to square one. The updates have literally rendered my €120 Apple TV useless and certainly 'not fit for purpose'. As I sit here trying to listen to a song playing from my phone, it can't even get through 1 whole song before dropping out. And by the way, I'm only sat 5M at most from my wireless point, in the same room.
5 year ago I was able to continuously and reliably stream music to a Roku Soundbridge that was basic at best. What the feck is Apple doing with this stuff? As most people, I buy Apple products because I expect them to just work and I don't want 20 mins of hair pulling, shouting frustration until I give in and have to plugin the computer / phone anyway. It's ridiculous and yet I fear it will fall on deaf ears.
    My setup.
    iPhone 5s, IoS8
    iPad 4, IoS8
    Macbook Retina OS Mavericks
    Wired Gigabit Ethernet connection
Wireless N connection for the others.
    Static IP Addressing
    Reset / Restarted everything.
    So what's going on?
    Chris

I appreciate that with knowing nothing about my network you're pushing a passive aggressive blame on me however it's out of place. I work as a System Admin for a national healthcare staffing firm and from reading your post in this thread I'm assuming I actually have more knowledge on what networking is and what could and could not effect Airplay. Also, please read. The issue is the device is restarting or powering off, how is that network related? Is it getting some demonic version of a WOL packet and powering down?
I mentioned multiple devices streaming have the issue ranging from iTunes on a PC to mobile devices. This sets off a flag right away that the Apple TV itself is the issue as many "users" are having a problem with it. Second, there was zero issues prior to the iOS 8 update of the Apple TV, also points to it not being a mystical magical network issue. Third, there's been no network changes in my home that would impact Airplay magically only when iOS 8 comes out.
My Apple TV is hard wired using gigabit on the same switch as my work laptop and NAS. Both have the same issues streaming since iOS 8 on the Apple TV. My iPad and iPhones also have issues over wi-fi. Here we're looking at two different parts of the network having identical issues with the 1 device. Once again the evidence points to the Apple TV.

  • Audio cuts out at times for a few seconds with VOD

While watching VOD the audio will cut out at times when the program is playing.  I have reset the boxes, and router with no change.  I have read on a post that someone had pixilation issues and the Verizon techs hooked up a cat5e from the ONT directly into the router, which solved her issues.  Is this something I can do, and will it help my issues?
    Thanks, Charlie

Today I tried to find the answer to my question, again... And tot my surprise I found it!! When I played music with winamp I saw in the systemtray that the Creative volumecontrol actually did mute the sound automatically for a few seconds. The reason for this I don't know. In de surround mixer I clicked standard. Music is playing ok now., no more interupptions. Seems to me something is wrong with the Creative software.....

  • Internet Connection no longer working with WRT54G V3 Router

I have had a WRT54G V3 router working successfully for a number of years now with a couple wireless PCs through a cable modem with Comcast as my ISP.  All of a sudden yesterday, neither PC could access the internet.  No changes had been made to the router.
I contacted Comcast and they of course had me hard-wire one of my PCs into the cable modem.  That worked and I was able to access the internet.  However, when I tried to put the router back in place (in either a wired or wireless fashion), I could not access the internet.
I've tried following the online Linksys troubleshooting documention.  The lights that should be lit on the router are lit.  I can access the router setup web page which shows the settings still intact.  I've tried going through the power sequencing to no avail.  Comcast says my router is the culprit of my problem, but I don't know why it would all of a sudden stop working.  My wireless printer still works so it detects a signal and my PC shows it's connected, but no internet access is possible.
What do I need to do?  Are there any other diagnostic tools available?  The Chat people won't help because I'm out-of-warranty.
    Solved!

Here's a trick on how to do the reset on the router.

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • Streaming cutting out when streaming from iTunes libarary to Apple TV

Up until a day or two ago everything was working fine, and I haven't changed anything with my WIFI settings or anything else.
I usually load up a .mp4 file into iTunes libary and then play it, and then I click on the Apple TV icon to stream it to my TV. This works fine, however after about 10 minutes it can cut out, and then when I restart it, it's fine, but then cuts out again later.
At first I thought it was a problem with the file I had converted from AVI to MP4, but I just tired a native MP4 and I still get the issue.
I haven't changed any settings on my mac or apple tv.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
The following article(s) may help you.
    Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    Recommended Wi-Fi settings
    Sources of Interference
Wifi Diagnostic Software (for Mac users)
You may also find some help on this page, where I’ve collected some of the more unusual solutions to network issues.
