WRT54G V7 and SSID broadcast disable

have problems connect to the router when ssid broadcast is diablet. I can see the "network", enter the SSID and wep-key, but it will not connect.. If I select to broadcast my SSID I can easily connect to the router.. Strange, anyone who have the same problem ? I also have a wrt54g v1, and this router do not have these problems..With this you can easily connect to the router when ssid broacast is disablet..

I've used Intel PRO 2200GB ver 9.x and earlier version of 10 (driver + management software) to connect to a hidden SSID wireless network without any problem. I manually created a profile for the hidden network and connect to that profile.
On an unrelated note, I've enable SSID broadcast after reading a few articles about it being nothing but trouble. Here's one.

  • How to confirm access secure with SSID broadcast disabled?

I have set up my wireless router with a unique SSID, SSID broadcast disabled, and with WPA enabled. With my PC turned off, the 'WLAN' light remains lit. Is this a 'feature' of the WRT54G wireless router, or is someone else actually using my wireless router?

the WLAN light will be lit as long as you have the wireless function on the router "enabled" . You may have disable the SSID broadcast....however that does not stop the wireless function on the router.

  • WRT54G with USB11 v 2.6: Can't automaticaly reconnect after SSID broadcast disabled

    Hi All,
I'm trying to make my network more secure. I've done all the basics, including disabling the SSID broadcast. The only problem is that after a few hours, I lose connectivity on the USB 11 wireless adapter and have to directly connect to the router via a cat 5 cable and reset the SSID to broadcast, which causes my network to find it and logs in. I reset the SSID broadcast to disable and get a few more hours of conenctivity until it drops again.
My router is ver 2.0 and my adapter is 2.6. This is the first time in 4 years I've had any probs with my wireless network.
My PC is brand new and pretty mid-high-end. Intel duo-core, 2 GB ram, etc...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Best thing is to just enable SSID.  It's a myth that disablling helps with security, it does for the average joe... a bit.  but not really.
I found a great article about how disabling SSID doesn'treally do much for security at all, but i can't seem to laocte ti right now.  I was googling wireless security stuff about a month or so ago,  guess i should have bookmarked that one.

  • MacBook Pro and SSID Broadcast

    Hi All,
New MacBook Pro and I am having some strange issues. By default I disable SSID Broadcast on my Netgear, and all of the other wireless devices work fine. Including my 15inch Powerbook. They only way I can connect with the MacBook Pro is to enable SSID Broadcast. Both of the laptops are setup with the same Airport configs.
Software update is up to date, so I'm kind of stumped. Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Dan R

Try changing the Airport network selection from Automatic to Preferred networks in the Networks System Preference and additionally make sure the network you're trying to join is at the top of the list. If it isn'tdrag it there. Failing that, try deleting the network profile, apply the change and then readd the network manually and see if that helps.

  • RAZR MAXX Wi-Fi Connection w/ SSID Broadcast Disabled

RAZR MAXX not connecting to my wi-fi network unless SSID is being broadcast.  Would prefer not to broadcast.  Anyone else able to make this work? Thanks.

The router settings are correct and I have other wireless devices connect without broadcast.  The RAZR connects successfully when the router is set to broadcast the SSID.  I've also verified the RAZR has my network credentials stored, as I don't have to re-enter them each time it connects.  However, if I disable the broadcast of the SSID on the router, the RAZR will no longer connect.  It only shows available networks that are broadcasting.  It would be nice if I could have a preferred Wi-Fi network (as in my home network) on the RAZR and have it connect even with broadcast turned off.  I would expect this would need to be set on the RAZR, but I have not found an option in the network settings to do this.

  • WLC user authentication and SSID broadcast

                   Hi Everyone,
Need to confirm if WLC  is sending the ssid as broadcast or not?
Also if users connect if they get the ip from dhcp need to confirm how they are getting authenticated?
    Regards

With respect to username you are correct.
But regarding authentication you cannot come to a conclusion like that, You have to see the full "show client detail " . Here is an example of PEAP authenticated client. Authentication algorithm open system does not mean user does not use password. Any EAP method  Authentication Algorithm show as open system, but still user has to enter their credential (except TLS where it is certificate based)

  • SSID Broadcasting even when disabled

I have two 5508 wireless controllers with two WLANS.  One is public and SSID broadcasting is enabled.  The other is our secured network and was configured with broadcasting disable.  When looking at the controlling both through prime and on the controller itself, broadcasting is still not enabled, however the SSID is showing up in the available networks list on our computers.  We haven't changed anything on the wireless network for quite a long time and this is a recent discovery.  Anyone know how to remedy this situation?

    Id like to add.
Your PCs that show the SSID mean they are configured for that WLAN. This is why you see it someone configure these clients for this WLAN.
If you have devices not seeing this its becuase they havent been configure for it.
As for the 'hidden' you need to mark this if your wlan is not broadcasting the SSID. No checky checky no worky worky ..

  • Disabling SSID Broadcast

I have an Aironet CB21AG 802.11b client adapter installed in an IBM ThinkPad T22 connecting to a Linksys BEFW11S4 802.11b wireless router. One of the security essentials indicated by Linksys is to disable SSID broadcast after all wireless devices have been configured.
When I do so the link between my laptop and the router is lost. The adapter's user manual indicates that if the SSID is blank on the Available Infrastructure and Ad Hoc Networks page - which it is when SSID broadcast is disabled - you cannot activate the network.
Is there anyway to ensure the Aironet client adapter is able to communicate w/my wireless router with SSID broadcast disabled?

Yes, just enter the SSID that your are using on the AP into the wlan config utility you are using on the laptop...
This way your AP will not accept association requests from any wireless client except those who are configured with the correct SSID.

  • Survey fail even with SSID broadcast

I fail the initial survey every time I try with the WRE54G. No wireless networks show up - and I get over 20 when I try with other devices. I usually have SSID broadcast disabled, but have enabled it on the WRT54G router when setting up the RE. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Just make sure that the range expander is properly configured and well synchronized with the router , and make sure that the ssid broadcast on the range expander is also enabled.

  • WRT54G-V3 Disabling SSID Broadcast/Laptop connectivity

    I set up this wrt54g v3 yesterday
    everything went well
but when I attempted to disable the ssid broadcast for the network, I completely loose all connectivity on the wireless laptop
    here is what I have
    wpa-psk/tkip
    wireless mac filtering
and my challenge is this "disable broacast" thing because once I do I loose all connectivity on the laptop.
As of 9:00am EST I have the broadcasting on but the network is secured but I really would like to know what element I'm missing here.
Also when I did this able the broadcast the laptop wireless card was flickering but I never quite stayed on for me to use it.
My goal (if I had one) would be do disable the broadcast and still have my laptop have connectivity to the AP.
Thanks in advance and God bless.

Hmmmm... probably a laptop glitch.... can't connect to the network coz it can't see it.
Try upgrading the routers firmware while your at it. It's the most you could do coz everything actually checks out fine.

  • Disabling SSID Broadcast Question

I'm glad to say that my just installed router (WRT54GS-7) is working great.  I have a question however on Disabling SSID Broadcast.  According to the Linksys instructions, after I checked the disable button, I am required to change my profile.  I am to click on an icon on the bottom right tool bar.  The issue I have is that there is no icon to click on.  If I disable my SSID Broadcast, how do I go about changing my profile?

If Windows is the primary connection software for your wireless, simply open Start-->Control Panel-->Network Connections
Right-click the wireless network connection in that list and click Properties, the second tab labeled Wireless Networks will allow you to create a profile for a wireless network.  Profiles appear in the Preferred Networks list.  If this area is greyed out that means you installed 3rd party software to handle your wireless connections.  In which case you will need to open that software and configure the profile from within there.

  • Meraki WiFi Stumbler sees SSID when broadcast disabled?

I was curious about channel interference from neighbors' WiFi and tried Meraki WiFi Stumbler.  I was surprised to see that my SSID was listed even though my broadcast is disabled.  How is that possible?
    WRT54G V8
    Firmware Version: v8.00.8

Because the SSID is always transferred unencrypted, e.g. during association...
Disabling the SSID broadcast won't hide your network. It's useless and won't do anything to your security. It will at best cause issues with your wireless devices and it will drain batteries of your wireless clients.

  • Can you disable the SSID broadcast without turning off WIFI?

Is there a way to disable the SSID broadcast without disabling WIFI altogether? Prior to the 4.3 IOS upgrade I could keep my WIFI enabled and when at home, the phone would automatically switch to my hi speed WIFI. The new upgrade now turns your phone into a WIFI/MYFI hotspot and broadcasts your phones SSID to the world.

Only if you have enabled and setup personal hotspot settings in your network settings, AND have the hotspot conneciton active AND are sharing the hotspot connection via wifi.
If you do not have Personal Hotspot features enabled or active, your iPhone is not broadcasting any network connection ID information, with or without wifi enabled.
P.S. according to the iOS release notes, even if you leave Hotspot active, it will stop broadcasting the SSID after a timeour with no connections, since the HotSpot feature turns off after a short timeout with no activity.

  • Adapter can't detect router if the SSID Broadcast is disabled, why? =(

Why can't my Linksys WUSB300N Adapter detect my Linksys WRT54GX SRX Router unless I broadcast the SSID?
I want my Router to be hidden, but everytime I try to disable the SSID Broadcast of my Router, my Linksys Adapter fails to locate it and I end up losing my connection to the router altogether. I am running Windows Vista and I have the 1.0.0.1 driver for Vista. What could I be doing wrong? Please help.

This is a common problem.  Are there several other networks in your neighborhood?  Are other users also not broadcasting their SSID?
I used to recommend that SSID broadcast be set to "disabled" for security reasons.  But newer cracking methods have made this old trick worthless.  It adds little or no security to your system.  I now recommend that SSID broadcast be set to "enabled".  This will help your computer find, and lock on to your router's signal.  And this should give at least some slight boost in network performance.
For wireless security, you should be using WPA2, or at least WPA encryption, and a strong password.   By strong password I mean at least 24 random characters including capital letters, small letters, and digits  (but no spaces.).  If you are using this type of security, you do not need to worry about broadcasting your SSID.

  • How can I disable SSID broadcast with Time Capsule?

I have always disabled the SSID broadcast with other devices. It is a big help with securing the networks. Can this be done with Time Capsule? If yes, please tell me how.
    Thanks.

I have always disabled the SSID broadcast with other devices. It is a big help with securing the networks. Can this be done with Time Capsule? If yes, please tell me how.
You can by turning on hidden network.
Open the airport utility .. click on your TC, and then edit.. go to the wireless TAB. Click on wireless options. Click Create hidden network.
Let me add in modern world.. it is totally useless. A person can see your hidden network using any standard wireless analysis software. It adds no security at all.. and WPA2 Personal with a decent password 10-20 characters mix of upper and lower case plus numbers is still solid.. add more characters if you are paranoid.. but honestly hiding SSID does nothing.
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/28653/debunking-myths-is-hiding-your-wireless-ssi d-really-more-secure/
If you did not know it is not part of the IEEE wireless standard.. it therefore often leads to problems with clients.
There are many other reasons given in the article above..
