WRT54G v7 losing connection

I have a WRT54G which is used as a wireless access point, so the WAN port is connected to the real DSL gateway, a SpeaadTouch 546.
I tested this configuration with a WRT54G v2 before ordering a new one.
Now, the new one is loosing connection with the speedtouch after approx. 2 minutes. When I save the configuration of the WRT54G (without changing anything) the connection is restored for the next couple of minutes.
I do not have that problem with the other one.
I recently loaded the latest firmware 7.00.1 but that didn't solve it.
Does anyone has a clue how this can be the case?
Thanks.

Hi , if you look at the setup page...you should have an option called keep alive....enable that....also enter the MTU manually ,Keep the value 1492…

The problem I'm having is everyonce in a while (in about a weeks time) all PC's in my network lose the ability to connect to the router and Internet. I have to unplug the router, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back up, turn my PC(s) my on, and I'm able to connect. I've checked with Linksys and I'm currently running the most current Firmware for Ver. 6.
Do any of you GURU's have any ideas or fixes for this? Thanks in advance
    I have the following:
    WRT54G
    Ver.6
    Firmware 1.02.0
IP Address assigned by DHCP server on the Router
Max IP addresses allowed to connect is 9
ISP: Charter Cable 3Mb, IP address is not Static

    Thanks, PD

Sorry to interject a completely different answer here, but I have experienced the same problems.
Blame me for the newb I am, but here is what I did after losing conn and thinking that my modem was burned up after 2 years of use:
    1)  Attempted to buy a new DSL modem on Easter Sunday...good luck...
    2)  Went back home after not finding said modem to find connection working again
    3)  Wife did not use her desktop for 10 days due medical procedure (no connection problems)
    4)  Wife gets better, uses her computer, I start losing connection again.
    5)  Not realizing step 4, I call ATT dsl and am told, maybe you need a new filter on your DSL line.  DL speeds return to proper speeds, think I am fine.
    6)  Wife uses Outlook 18 hours later while I am on my networked machine, we both lose connection
    7)  After reconnecting all possible wires, realize maybe the problem is with the latest Windows Update Patch OR a router problem
    8)  Go to my trusty Best Buy contact at nearby store, named Jason, and ask Jason if he has heard anything like this in the last 6 weeks...He THANKED ME PROFUSELY as he and his brother were experiencing the SAME networking problem.  Jason removed the past 7 windows update patches and that removed the problem.
He has since turned off Windows Updates.  Jason said that a couple of the update patches could not be uninstalled, but the 7 or so that could be uninstalled did the trick and he has not had dropped connections since.
Anyone else experiencing this?  I talked to a cable modem user/friend and he has been experiencing similar problems but the Microsoft utility with his router allows him to double click to re-establish a connection, unlike me who has to power everything down, count to sixty, and power up.
(I have not yet uninstalled the patches but wondering what others have seen)
    Thanks for the posts peeps!

  • Losing Connection with WRT54GS

    Hi All,
First off I apologize if this concern has been noted and solved elsewhere on these boards. I recently moved into a new apt with a friend, we went with Comcast for our cable/internet set-up, and upgraded internet. Since I have a cable wire in my room we set-up the Comcast modem in there, as well as the new WRT54GS router I bought from Linksys, with the speed booster, not sure if that makes a difference. My friend is connecting through the router with a USB G card (also speed booster). Everything was working fine for the first 8-10 hours, the connections and hook-ups are all correct, but in the last 48 hours I have found that I have been losing my internet connection (I’m wired to the router). The linksys software has been diagnosing this problem as “Another network detected” and basically telling me that I am no longer connected to my router. In short, to fix the issue all I have to do is unplug the router, plug it back in, and wait 15 seconds and I’m back online. Obviously this isn’t a huge issue but it is getting rather annoying, especially since it seems to go offline every 2-3 hours after I fix it with the same issue. I have called linksys but was unable to get anyone the first time, so before I try again I was hoping that perhaps someone on these boards had a similar issue, or could at least tell me the direction to take, if its most like a router issue, or perhaps Comcast issue, in that maybe my wiring or modem is causing the problem. There are several other wireless networks in the area, I’m not sure if it could be an interference issue as well. The peculiar part is that my roommate has not lost his connection during my down time….
Thanks in advance for your help
    Regards
    EMS

I'd like to see some input on this one as well.
I have the WRK54G and it is doing the same thing, it started about 3 weeks ago losing it's connection every 2 or 3 hours.
I just reformatted my system (for an issue not related to the router obviously) and now it's losing connection every couple of minutes then reconnecting.
The Linksys connection software won't even let it connect, but the default windows software will at least let it connect for a little while, it's getting pretty frustrating.
I've had to wait for it to reconnect 3 times just while typing this.Message Edited by Douglajl on 03-20-200702:56 PM

  • WRT54GS losing connection.

I have seen messages already regarding the WRT54GS and it losing connection. I have the same problem with one I purchased today.
It happens a few times an hour.
Connection to the internet is fine when plugged directly into the cable modem. When I use the router is when the problems start.
I have upgraded the firmware and it has not helped in the slightest.
Has anyone actually got a working solution? If not then I'm getting a refund tomorrow.

I have been having the same issues with my router lately. It is a Linksys BEFW11S4 - Wireless-B Broadband Router. It has the latest firmware and everything which was from like, April of 2005 since this is an older router model. I've had it for about 3 years now and have had no problems until this past week. I have Verizon DSL. Anyway, my network connection seems to fail every so often at least 6 times a day at random times. I use WEP security encryption and everything. Every time it fails, I have to reset the router and go into administrator configurations and retype the password then it starts working again. But it is annoying since I just lose connection for no reason when I'm in the middle of something. Even when it fails, it does not indicate that I lost connection or that my connection is weak. It says that the signal is still excellent all the time even when it stopped working and the Internet light is still on. Odd. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong or is it time for me to buy a Wireless-G router instead and hope that fixes the problem? Again, I have had no issues with the router and it has been working great for nearly 3 years until this past week and I did nothing to mess with it. Maybe is it just that the hardware is worn-out? I dunno, I just want this problem solved. I'm glad that I'm not the only one with this issue.

  • WRT54G v4 keeps losing connection to the internet

My WRT54G version 4 keeps losing connection to the internet. I've been on the phone w/ customer service so many times that the last time I think they gave up because after putting me on hold they never got back on the phone! :-)
Anyway one pattern I am seeing is that the router loses connection to the internet within two or three hours after I disconnect from the Cisco VPN and shut down my work PC. Has anyone else seen something like this?
    -Frank

I found that Linksys EasyLink Advisor is a needless program that ultimately downgrades your router from a good piece of technology to a problematic pile of junk. So, therefore, try uninstalling Linksys EasyLink Advisor to get your good, solid hardware back. All you need to do to in order to get your router to work is plug it into an outlet, plug your Internet connection into the router, and then connect your router to your computer. It should then work without software (i.e., LELA) complicating it up.
Now, if you feel the need to set up an SSID or security, which I highly suggest, type 192.168.1.1 into your web browser. Leave the user name blank, and type admin as the password. Go to the Wireless tab and type something in as the SSID. It could be anything, just as long as it isn't linksys. Click on the Wireless Security sub-tab. Select WEP as the security mode with a WEP encryption of "64 bits 10 hex digits". Now, in Key 1, you need to type in a 10-digit password of numbers 0-9 and letters A-F (I believe). I suggest you use your phone number since that is very convenient in this instance.
Hopefully what I suggested in the first paragraph resolves your problem. If not, I suppose you could ignore the second paragraph if you feel the need to reinstall LELA. *shudders*

  • Questions About Losing Connection

Like other people I've noticed here, my WRTG45 v5 wireless router has recently started losing connection to the net multiple times a day. At first, we thought it was because our modem was old, so we bought a new one, but it didn't fix anything. So here are my questions:
    1. My dad seems to think that a configuration or setup CD (that we lost) is required to make the router work with the new modem. Is this true? I don't think so, but I have to ask just so I can get him to move on.
    2. I noticed in other posts here that programs like Bittorrent can cause the router to be overworked or whatever. This might explain our problem, as I use Bittorrent a lot (but not everytime the connection has dropped). If this is indeed the problem (or contributing to it), is there anyway to deal with it while still being able to use the program?
For the first couple months, the router was working fine. Even with Bittorrent running a lot, and all the computers (2 wired, 1 wireless, and 1 wired X-Box) engaging in various activities on the net. So this is very puzzling to me.
One more bit of information, I have given every computer a unique, static IP address. However, I noticed recently that when I look at the router configution after typing in its IP address in a web browser, that it is set to DHCP Enabled.
Also, in the advanced TCP/IP settings for this connection, under the WNS tab, the NetBIOS setting is set to the default of using NetBIOS from the DCHP server.
Since I am using static IP addresses, could these DHCP centered settings be causing problems? Although, even if they are, it still doesn't explain why the router was working fine months ago (unless someone changed stuff without my knowing).
Anyway, any help at all would be appreciated.

I assume you meant that you had a WRT54G v5 router.
First of all, the setup CD is not required.  All router settings can be made by going to the router's web pages at 192.168.1.1
It is possible that the static LAN IP addresses are causing your problem, if they were not set up correctly.  Linksys has a strict set of rules to follow regarding static LAN IP addresses.
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address.  So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1,  or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2       thru 192.168.1.99  or
    192.168.1.150   thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0  and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
Check all of your static LAN IP addresses.  If you have violated any of the above rules for static LAN IP addresses, it could be the cause for your problem, and you should fix it before attempting any other router repairs or changes.
You should leave the DHCP server turned on.  This way, if you have a visiting friend who you want to connect to your system, it will be easy to do.   Leaving the DHCP server turned on should not cause any problems, even if all your addresses are fixed.   In general, you should let the DHCP server assign all addresses, unless there is a specific reason to use a static address.  You can mix static and DHCP assigned addresses on the same LAN, as long as you follow the above rules for static addresses.
Linksys routers have had problems when BitTorrent is used.  Your router has new firmware posted that should improve compatibility with BitTorrent.  It is firmware version 1.02.0   You will need to download and install this firmware (after fixing the static address problem, if any).  (Note:  When you update your firmware, you should use a computer that is wired to the router.  Also, when you do a firmware upgrade, turn off all other computers on your system, and unplug all other wires from the router.)   After you have installed the firmware, and powercycled the router, you will need to reset your router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.

  • WRE54G losing connection to either router or PCI?

I have a WRT54GS V6 router, a WMP54GS pci card and now a WRE54G V3 Expander all with latest firmare. Router is downstairs and coverage is fine for most of upstairs but my bedroom is about 20 feet down a hallway and signal is low (and sometimes non-existent) in this bedroom.
Have set the expander up properly following the many links  on this support forum and when I first plug it in, everything is fine.  Blue lights on, my bedroom PC says "excellent" signal with 54mbps speed and internet works great.  After about 10 minutes though I can't access any websites or connect to expander through browser. All of this time, the lights are still blue and my PC still has 5 bars and excellent signal strength.  If I try repairing connection, it will connect again with a low signal and not allow me to access expander settings so I'm assuming it's bypassing expander and connecting to router rather than expander.  The only way to connect again to expander is to power it down and on again and I'm then back to a great signal for 10 minutes.
Things I've tried after searching the forum:
    - tried different channels
    - assigned new IP address to expander
    - enabled mac filtering on router to stop PC from bypassing expander and
reconnecting to router.  In this case, same problem but then can't repair/connect to router and must restart expander to connect to it.
    - tried setting a different SSID on expander and setting PC to connect to only that one.
    - turned off power saving mode in settings of my PCI card (via device manager)
    - moving expander to different places.  If I place it at top of stairs, the signal in my bedroom is not great.  If I place it in my bedroom next to computer, signal is great.  Either way though, the same  problem happens after 10 minutes or so.
Aside from resetting the expander and following all of the the setup instructions again (which I've done about 5 times now), is there anything else I can do?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for reply.  No, I'm not losing connection to internet when I'm not using the repeater.  It's only when I add the repeater to the mix do I lose the internet connection along with connection to the repeater.
Called Linksys today and they first advised me to re-flash the firmware even though it had the latest version. No change.  They then told me to try to wall power plate rather than the AC wire connection.  Not sure what that has to do with it but will try it.
I bought this unit a few weeks ago via Amazon for $35 as a refurbished unit.  I'm starting to think I just got a lemon.  Unfortunately, the actual seller was Amazon but some other reseller that doesn't accept returns on refurbished units.
I will try WEP but to be honest, I really don't want the unit if it doesn't support WPA as it's supposed to.  And yes, I have assigned a static IP and gateway.  I also tried changing the computers gateway to the IP address of the repeater (read that suggestion somewhere) but again, no luck.

  • WRE54G losing connectivity

A few months ago I purchased a WRE54G range expander. After some initial setup issues, it worked great until a couple of days ago. The expander stopped working and seemed to have reset itself. After a couple of conversations with tech support, the range expander finally had connectivity, however, I am now continuously losing the connection. I have downloaded the latest firmware for the expander and my WRT54GS modem, I have changed settings, turned my beacon interval down to 50, and am still losing connection. Does anyone have any other ideas of what I could try, or have a had similar problem that they were able to resolve? I would appreciate any help anyone can provide me with.

did u try a firmware upgrade on the expander too ?? if not , then give it a try .. try wireless channel - either 1 or 11 , RTS and Fragmentation threshold - 2304

  • Losing connection / IP conflict

I have just purchased a WRT54G and just upgraded firmware v8.  I have been having IP conflicts and losing connections with my laptop, WII and two wired computers (one XP and the other Vista 64bit).  Everything is set to auto so IP's should be automatically updating and accessing the router.  Since I just upgraded the firmware I'll sit back and see what happens, but I've been reading the boards and have seen lots of problems with this router.  At this point I'm about to return this router and go with D-Link wireless, but I like the support and software packages Linksys has.
Does anyone have some suggestions that may help me out if I experience the same problems?

After upgrade you need to reset the router for few seconds ...
    1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
    2. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for
    another 30 Seconds.
    3. Plug back the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button
    for 30 Seconds.
    4. Release the reset button.
    Now reconfigure the router ....

  • Access point --- Internet losing connection every 5 minutes....

i have a wrt54g v6 router and a wmp54g both current drivers and firmware from the linksys website. i am frequently losing connection between router and internet. i've lowered my mtu, i've forwarded ports, reinstalled card in all 4 pci slots, i've literally done everything i know possible to do. i sat on the phone for 4 hours waiting on a linksys technician before my phone died friday trying to get ahold of someone for some help. resetting the router doesn't seem to help at all. the connection loss time is random aswell. sometimes it's for minutes sometimes it's for 10 seconds, but when you're playing online games that's all it takes to disconnect you. i've been going absolutely crazy trying to fix this so if anyone has any idea's i would be ever so greatful.

    2.0ghz amd 2400+

First off all i don't suggest to play online games on wireless since as we all know wireless is such an unstable media for connection.
Can you tell me the distance between the computer and the router. Also what is in the direct environment of the network.
Are you using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone. This device is can cause intermittent internet connection on wireless networks
we still have to isolate the problem just in case something else is causing your problem.

  • Losing connection to wireless network every week

I really don't understand why this keeps happening. I have a PC (Windows XP) connected to a cable modem. I also have a WRT54G wireless router connected to the modem, following instructions on the CD-ROM that came with the router.
Across the room, about 8 feet away, I have another PC (Windows XP) with a Compact Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with SpeedBooster model WUSB54GSC installed in one of the computer's USB ports. Again, I followed installation instructions on the supplied CD-ROM and things came together and I was able to connect to the internet through the wireless router.
A week later, the 2nd computer lost it's connection with the router, so I tried "repairing the connection" but that didn't work. I ended up uninstalling the software and starting over. This time it worked, but the connection was "connection 2."
Every week, usually on Sunday, I seem to lose my connection with the router and now I am up to "connection 6." Other people I have spoken with say they never loose their connections and the folks at Road Runner think it must be a problem with the router. Who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if I set it up incorrectly and have probably confused it with all the uninstalling and reinstalling I have done.
Any suggestions? When it does connect, it works fine. I just don't understand why it keeps losing it's connection every Sunday.
Thanks for any help/advice anyone can offer.

Sounds like you are not connecting to the correct network.  Let say you called your network ORLANDO.  You should see ORLANDO in view your network connections. Also, if you would click on view workgroups computers, you should see all your computers listed.  You will have to log on to your router and make sure everything is set up properly.  XP default is MSHOME.
I have had my share of problems using WUSB54GC on my windows 98 se.  No problems with XP sp 3 using identical adaptor.  I am been at this for a couple of months.  Usually unpluging adaptor and repluging it will solve the problem.  No problems using XP. I have even switch adaptors on both computers.

  • Windows 8 keeps losing connectivity

Hi, not sure if this is unique but for the past few weeks Windows 8 has been losing connectivity every few minutes when browsing web pages, playing games etc. I am sure it's windows 8 as I have another work laptop using XP that I can be on all day via a
VPN and that does not drop at all (it would normally drop within a few seconds of losing connectivity). I've done a lot of searching on the net for the same issue, others seem to be having similar things happen such as slow speed but can't find anything that
    matches, hence this separate question.
I have also tried swapping routers to no avail. The thing is, you wouldn't know anything had happened from the network connectivity. Suddenly a page won't load. The wireless connectivity at the bottom right of the screen shows a full 5 bars (not limited
connectivity). The way to get it back again is to leave it for a few minutes or disconnect from the router and reconnect again. Even whilst typing this I have had to do that twice.
    I'd appreciate some suggestions!
    Many Thanks, Paul.

    Hi,
Does this issue occur with both wireless and wired?
I suggest to perform these tests to troubleshoot the issue:
1 Update NIC card for your machine
2 Temporary disable firewall and antivirus program
3 Logon with Safe Mode with Networking
4 Update framework for your router.

  • Been losing connection for magic mouse and wireless keyboard

When I have my MBP running Mavericks in clamshell mode, I lose connections to both magic mouse and apple wireless keyboard in clamshell mode. I've tried all the PRAM SCM, aluminum foil and paper tricks. What I then did was test what happens when I leave the MBP open rather than in clamshell mode and it appears to avoid losing connection, at least that is what I've concluded with Mavericks for now..... anyone else able to replicate this? Having to leave the MBP open is not ideal.

Barry, thanks, still not working.  I've tried every thing I can think of or have read, what I'm concluding is that there is either a problem with Mavericks or something has changed on how bluetooth works in Mavericks. Did not have this problem for the last 4 years. I can reproduce the problem when I close the laptop. I had the Bluetooth and wireless card checked out and replaced about 3 weeks ago. Problem has continued.

  • External drive conntected to Time Capsule keeps losing connection

I've been having this problem since I bought my TC over one year ago. Other than this everything works fine (aside from the occasional need for a restart).
I have an external 500GB drive attached to my 500GB TC via usb. I use the TC strictly for backups and the other drive to host my media files. When I want to use those files I switch on the drive. Only about half of the time does that work. When it does work everything is fine. I see the drive in the finder as expected.
When it doesn't work, I can see the drive name in the finder. But if I click to go into the folder, I get an error saying that the connection cannot be found.
It shows up in the Airport Utility as normal.
Powering the drive off and on does not help.
Relaunching the finder doesn't help either.
The only way I can connect to the drive again is to either logoff and log back into my mac, or restart the TC.
It seems that my computer is remembering some kind of network disk mounting settings that don't get refreshed when I turn on the drive, but then do get refreshed when I logoff and back in. Does anyone know how I could force that refresh to happen? Has anyone had this problem before?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
PS all my software and firmware are the latest.
    Thanks.

Left click on the Finder icon from the Dock and click "Connect to server...", go to recent server and click on your Airport Time Capsule.
    THANK YOU!!!!
    This solved it for me!

  • Network Drives Losing Connection from Server 2012 to Windows 7 64bit Machines

I have about 20 users at my facility and recently upgraded our server from one running server 2003 to one running server 2012. Since that occurred, I have had numerous issues that I did not encounter on the old server.
Lately, users have been losing connection to the shared network drives randomly and constantly. The drives will come back on-line on their own but it could be 2 minutes or 30 minutes before they do and when users are in the middle of working on a document
from the network, they are unable to save until the drive comes back. Manually disconnecting and re-mapping them works sometimes but then the problem will re-occur. I have tried re-doing the shares and security settings and run a couple of supposed hotfixes
on the client side and the server side to no avail.
Now our regional office is suggesting that I re-connect the old server and then rebuild the new one with server 2008 r2, something I would like to avoid if possible.
I feel like this is a simple setting that I am missing, no conditions have changed except for the new server.
The server is a Intel Xeon CPU E5-2609 2.40GHz with Server 2012 64 bit on it. All computers (except on on 32 bit) are running Windows 7 Enterprise edition 64 bit.
    Please help.

I made this change to the registry on the server and am waiting to see if I have any more drops.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    Value:
    autodisconnect
    Data
    type : REG_DWORD
    Value:
    ffff (Hex)
There was a client side change suggested but I am missing that value for the client side change and others in the organization who don't have it are not experiencing this problem.
