WRT54G Ver 6 Constant Need To Reset!

I purchased a WRT54G Ver 6.0 Router in April to bring to Iraq with me.  I have it connected to my iDirect 3000 Satellite Modem, with the static IP config input into the WRT54G.
I have two computers on my desk, my personnal XPS 1710 with Vista and my Work D600 Latitude with XP.  Both computers exhibit the same problems at the same time.  I have even had other computers connected and have had the same problem.
My problem seems to be a constant need to reset the WRT54G Router.  I was connecting wirelessly.  The system seemed to operate fine for a day or two.  I started to have problems with the connection to the internet dropping.  When it did this, I could not connect to the WRT54G setup page either.  I figured something locally here at the Camp in Iraq might have been interfering with the wireless, so I ditched the wireless and have been using wired connections.  The problems have not stopped.  I am constantly having to unplug and reset the router to reconnect.  When it hangs up, I cannot even connect to the setup page.  Occasionally, it will find itself without reseting the router, but most times, I have to reset.
I have tried factory default reseting and manually reentering my settings.  I have just updated the firmware, but it didn't seem to solve anything.  In the past few minutes while trying to search for this problem here on this forum, the router dropped the connection twice.  The networking icon on the computer still indicates a connection, on the Vista is shows that a local connection is available only (during the problem).
I have read a little online and this seems to be a common problem for Linksys.  I have 2 more of these routers, one at home and one at my office in the States.  Both have had the problems, just not as severe.  This router requires reseting at least 15 times a day during my 12 hour shift.
I bought the Linksys Routers because they did have a reputation for reliability and quality.  Boy, I guess I should have researched this one a bit more.
I have 5 IP addresses from my Satellite ISP, so I am considering configuring the Router as a Switch or HUB, but I am unsure on how to do this, or of it will even solve my problems.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Vincent

I am having the almost exactly the same problem. It started about a week ago, (just like alot of others I have read on here recently) and I too will have no access to the set up page once it drops the net. I can still acess other computers on the router, but no net and no router set-up page until I reset it. I'm running the same router, without the firmware update. I have 4 desktops directly into the router..and one laptop wireless. Most of the time, the net will stay on for all the computers for surfing and email. Maybe once or twice a day it will drop access to the internet. a simple unplugging of the power cord resets it and everything is peachy. BUT....try to start a download.(usind DAP *download accelerator plus* or a bit torrent)...WHOA! it's anywhere from an instant drop to maybe ten minutes then drop. Most assuredly it will drop. we have had this router since January, and until a week ago, it worked just fine. no problems. Last week, our ISP upgraded their equipment and increased the bandwidth. (we have to use a cellular connection with a static IP being out in the boonies far enough that cable and DSL are still not available) The problems started at the same time and I thought it might be a problem with them. After testing one of the computers with a direct connection to the internet modem, everything, including a major download, worked just fine. It is definately a router problem. I spent quite a lengthy time on the phone with Linksys tech support, and the nice lady had me change the MTU rate from 1500 to 1300. It seemed to work, but about an hour after being done with the support call, things started to go wonky again. I am just about at my wits end!! Nothing has been changed on the router settings except that one thing that tech support instructed me to do. I am kinda leary about upgrading the firmware because I have been seeing a ton of *my router wont work with firmware update* or *now my router is frozen* posts. I have to type in a ton of settings because I am using a static IP and I really don't want to do all that again!! lol PLEASE, somone have a solution to this problem! It is driving me mad!! I would really hate to have to buy a new router, but my roomate is about to that point if this doesn't get fixed soon.

  • Linksys WRT54GS Ver 5 needs reboot every 10-12 hours after wiring it to LG BD590 Blu-Ray

Had this router hard wired to a desktop - everything has been fine forever.  Moved it so I could hard wire it to the Blu-Ray player for watching Netflix, etc.  Everything works.  Except the Router needs to be rebooted every 10-12 hours.  Unplugging it for 30 seconds works.  The router seems to be working, but the wireless signal to the other computers in the house, although showing strong, will not connect to the internet, Router is getting its internet straight from the Comcast modem. I have the latest firmware installed in the router.  Any ideas greatly appreciated before I throw this thing out.

Try to re-flash the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Also try to change some advanced wireless settings on the router. Click on Wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.

  • WRT54G ver. 6 can no longer connect to the internet after reset

I reset my WRT54G ver. 6 to clear the password, and now I can no longer connect to the internet with it. I can see the router itself from my PC, but that is all. I've followed the directions here for connection problems, but I can't seem to get an IP Address for it in the Web Configuration tool. Anybody have any thoughts?

Since you reset your router, you need to reconfigure it back again. try the online utility that automates the configuration. download Easy Link Connect utility at www.linksys.com/connect then download "Netset" and follow instructions.
if not Easy Link connect didnt work then you need to do the configuration manually.
    1. check physical connection modem should be connected wired to internet port of the router then PC to numbered ports of the router.
    2. Brighthouse i believe is cable connection, right? try power cycle your devices (turn off modem and router then turn on modem 1st then router next). check if your online.
    3. if not. check PC ip. click "start" then "run" type in "cmd" then press "OK". the command prompt should pop-up. type "ipconfig" and check IP and gateway. you should be getting an ip: 192.168.1.x and gateway: 192.168.1.1
    4. access router. open IE, then type in http://192.168.1.1 on address bar.
    5. you will be prompted with username and PW. "admin" is the default password. on setup, just below are subtabs. select "MAC address clone". in it, set "mac clone" to "enable" then click on "clone" then "save settings".
    6. power cycle devices again. try to go online
note: if you dont have latest firmware. try updating if needed

  • Need alot of help setting up a WRT54G ver.6

Ok, all i have is the router, (WRT54G Ver. 6 - Wireless G Broadband Router) Ive lost the box it came in, and everything with it. (I also have the power supply & 2 cords) A friend of mine setup everything for me at my old apartment, but Ive moved and have to do everything on my own this time.
At my old place my computer was the central computer where the broadband modem was, my roommate had a wireless usb card of some kind, that allowed him to connect to the network.
This time i have to have another computer as the central comp and i need a wireless usb card myself. I dont know what kind to get and how much it will be, any suggestions.
I also dont know how to set everything up, and what type of hardware/software i will need, i was hoping all the drivers and sofware would be online but im not sure. Im not sure if the computer here needs a different network card or something similar either.
Im also worried about how my computer is already setup, will i have to delete and redo all the settings already in effect, how do i do all this stuff
Any advice would be very appreciated, i know nothing at all, not even what wires plug into what.

setup modem connected to the internet port on the router and pc to the regular port on the router...reset the router for 10sec. then turn if off for the same amount of time while the router is off turn the modem as well.whats the model of your modem?

  • WRT54G ver. 6 Resetting Router

    Hello,
I accidentally unplugged my WRT54G ver 6. router and now all ports and internet port are lit up and the power port is flashing.  I have the instructions how to reset and reconfigure the settings of my router to work with my cable modem.  The problem is that I cannot reset my router.  I pressed the reset button in the back for 30 seconds, and then unplugged the power cord.  All ports remain lit up and the power port still flashes...
I have tried this multiple times and have exhausted all different possibilities (connecting router to computer, modem etc...) but nothing helps.  I even tried to press reset, and while holding it down unplug the power and then replug it, but it didn't work either..
    What should I do?
    Thank you for your replies.
    JL

Yea, you can fix it from a hard wired computer, if it's ok and (assuming you do have one)  just open a windows explorer page and type into the address bar:  http://192.168.1.1  and hit enter. If you have not changed the user name and password, the default user name is: “admin.” and the password is: "password" (without the quotes) You do need to change these immediately if not already done! Then you can repair and or update the firmware.
Did you also try to reboot the modem? Sometimes all that's neeeded is to unplug both modem and router and wait a couple min. Then replug modem first,  then router to get them both communicating with one another.. Good luck, but none of this is that difficult if you follow instructions well, also an abundance of help just from goolgling your problem.

    The problem is...
When one of the wireless computers is turned on it won't connect unless the router is powered down and back on. It will be fine until one of the other wireless computers are turned on and now it doesn't connect. It is possible to get them all simultaneously connecting, but difficult. It seems to be in the timing. I still haven’t nailed it down. Frustrating...
    The questions...

    If can do, what settings?
    If can't, new hardware recommendations?

  • WRT54G ver.6 "Dead ?"

I need some Help i have a linksys wireless router WRT54G ver.6.(Vista)  It was working fine for years then I come home from work and can't get internet.  By-passed router and I get internet.  All lights on router are saying working ok but can't get a connection. I can't even long onto the IPS address for the set-up? I tried all of the Vista repair but gives me an answer at the end can't fix problem.  I'm ok with computers but not an expert. but I'm thinking it's a readability problem with the internet?  Any help or maybe it's time to buy a new one?  Thanks

Have you tried a hard 30-30-30 reset? First power off your router and remove all cables.  Then plug back in the power cord and let it boot.  When the power light stops blinking and is solid, locate the recessed reset button and press it in holding for 30 seconds. Remove power while still pressing in the reset button for 30 seconds more. Place power back to router for 30 last seconds and release the reset button.  Power off the unit and plug your main PC back into port 1 and your modem back into the WAN port. Power on and reconfigure your settings.  Test unit to see if your internet functionality has returned.

  • Step by step complete setup for WRT54G ver.6 with Laptop and XBOX 360

Hello.  I am sorry to post this, I am sure it is a juevenile and redundent question...but I have tried to look for the set up cd (I can find where to download it...though I can find the firmware upgrade or whatever).  My friend at work said it would do all the setup pretty much automatically for me.
I somewhat know computers, but you might go ahead and make your replies VERY lamen's terms or I might not be able to follow.  Anyways, what I need, is a step by step/screen by screen directions for a secure network.  I have made a partial attempt at setting it up and it technically works, but I would feel better if I did the steps a-z in order, so I know that it is done correctly.  I also am not totally confident in its security as it is now.  (Also, technically, I did not check the XBOX again after getting the new laptop, I am just assuming it is still working because it was before).
My problem is I can't seem to find very good directions for setting up the router...I only find partials or confusing directions.
So here are the things I am trying to connect:
    Liksys WRT54G ver. 6
    Gateway Laptop running Windows Vista
    XBOX 360 - WIRED
(I had a PC and a laptop, but they both died at the same time and I have only been able to replace the laptop at this point...the PC will come later and not sure at this point if it will be Wired or not).
I have a cable Modem between the Router and the wall...I didn't look at that for brand/etc...but I can get it ASAP if needed.
Here are the settings that I have so far:
    Changed the Router Name
    Changed the SSID
Have DHCP set to 3  (XBOX, PC, Laptop)
    Wireless SSID Broadcast: Disable
Username and Password changed to my own info
    UPnP: Enable
I may have changed other things without knowing it.  So like I said, a complete, step by step screen by screen set up would be totally appreciated.  I haven't done anything in the security tab, all that is totally foreign to me, so I am just not broadcasting for now until I can get some help setting things up with you guys.
And if someone is familiar with the Laptop/XBOX 360 setup, and I need to change any of the settings on the XBOX itself, could you please include that in your directions?  I know that isn't technically what THIS forum is for, but it would sure be helpful to me if you happen to know both parts anyways.
    Thanks a lot (in advance)!

So all you just need to do is, secure your Wireless Network. Follow the setps bellow and change the settings on your Router.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Internet connectivity problems

    Alright so here's the deal.
I'm on Windows XP with Verizon DSL (in Orange County, CA) that uses a Westell modem (just modem, not modem and router combo).
I have the old Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 router that runs with everything fine.
I just bought the WRT54G Version 6 and connected everything up as needed.  Powered things down and then back up.  And it could not detect an Internet connection, but I could access the router via web browser.
    - Ran the Setup CD and it couldn't find the internet.
    - Upgraded the firmware.
    - I searched the forums and did not find a successful solution.
    - Called my ISP to confirm it is DHCP.
    - Talked to Linksys Support via phone and he had me do all sorts of stuff.  Releasing, Renewing, Local IP Address changes, pinging, MAC, etc.  All this to try to get some sort of IP address with the internet.
    - Tried it with a diff WRT54G Ver 6 (Yeah.  I bought two.  One for me, and one to bring to my parents), and it still didn't work.  (Can't be that both the routers I got are defective.)
    - Searched forums some more and ran across the EasyLink program.  I used it, and it tells me my freaking Wired adaptor is disabled.  Where do I enable it?  Can't be my computer because it all works fine with the old Linksys router I got....or could it?
    - Powered down and back up in many different combinations.
Did all that to no avail.  Anyone got a solution?  I couldn't find anything that worked.  I'm about to go return this and get something else tomorrow.  Maybe if I wake up, there will be a workable solution that is replied back.
Thanks in advance to all those that tried to help and posted something, or didn't post due to having no solution.
    - Chris

Yup Yup Yup.  I tried the WAN address thing and it still didn't work.
I was about to pack everything up and go return the stupid thing.  BUT.....I decided to talk to Verizon DSL support since I hadn't tried that.
    They helped me out good!!!
    Here's the solution.
I plugged in the old router, the BEF, and went to Status to click the DHCP Release.  Then unplugged the old router.
Then per Verizon DSL support instruction....powered down the modem, then powered it back up and waited for lights to stabilize.  Then I plugged in the new router, the WRT.  And went to Status (IP was already autofilled, with internet working) but I still clicked DHCP Renew.
    It all works.  WOOOOOO!!!!
By the way.  The WAN address thing is important.  I went to it on the new, WORKING router and disabled the WAN address.  The internet stopped working.  I re-entered in the WAN address I copied and the internet worked again.  So......yeah.
I hope for all those out there having the same problems as me, and without a solution, see this thread and try this.
Thanks again for your guys' help.
    **edit**
By the way.  Is there a way to stop my internet to being a stickler to this MAC address?  I'm just curious.  I'm gonna go google MAC address and see if I can read anything useful.

  • Need to reset password, lost install disc

I have a wireless router, Model WRT54GS v7.  I moved recently, and I need to reset the password to connect wirelessly.  I've lost the install discs during my move.  What do I need to do?

The reason why the admin is no longer working as the router password because you might have setup a router password, not knowing, during the first time you setup your router...If you remember the router password when you first used your setup cd to install your router then enter that password else you need to reset your router and re-configure it...
To reset the router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link
Then adjust the Wireless Settings as suggested in the previous post...

  • Need to reset Data Warehouse

    Hi,
I need to reset the Data Warehouse so that i can begin my first ETL Process. However, I'm not able to do so from DAC Client ver 7.9.5. When i click on "Tools" --> "ETL Management" --> "Reset Data Warehouse" nothing pop up's. Not sure why, all other links and windows opens, except for this. How can i get this fixed ?
Is there a way for me to do the reset manually ?
I checked on internet and found AS BELOW :-
D4 How do you run a full load (not incremental)
A: Reset data warehouse . Just truncate the S_ETL_REFRESH_DT table in the dac repository
So in our case the table to truncate will be W_ETL_REFRESH_DT rite ? Please confirm. We are scheduled to run the ETL at 6pm today.
Is there any other tables that i need to truncate as well ?
    Thanks,
    Saran.

    Hi
W_ETL_REFRESH_DT is a metadata table on which you should never perform truncate operation.
Also,Whate 'Reset Datawareshouse' does is it just updates last_refresh_dt of w_etl_refresh_dt to NULL.
So,all you need to do is
    update w_etl_refresh_dt set last_refresh_dt=NULL;
    commit;
    Hope this helps.......

  • WRT54G ver 5.0 refuses ISP?

I have a WRT54G ver 5.0. My ability to connect has become very inconsistent--90% of the time, I need to power down my ISP provided modem prior to connecting. My ISP ran a diagnostic & says that my wireless router is refusing the signal from the ISP. Once I power down/up the modem, it all works fine.
In all attempts to connect, I always get a screen that says I am connected to the router, but the internet can't be found--even when it is a successful connection...
    Would welcome thoughts & suggestions!

Just to save you some time, instead of powering down the modem and rebooting it, just disconnect the ethernet cable that connects the modem and router (with both the router and modem turned on), wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the ethernet cable, and see if that works.
Is this a new setup?  Have your modem and router ever worked properly together?
Please state the make and model of your modem.
    Please state your ISP.
If known, please state what version of firmware you have in your router.
If you connect your computer, by wire, directly to your modem, do you get a properly working Internet connection?
If you connect your computer, by wire, directly to the router, do you get a properly working Internet connection?
Are you having problems with a wired or wireless Internet connection, or both?

  • WRT54G Ver 1.1 Firmware Upgrade

I was experiencing some connection problems that were causing me to cycle the power on my router a few times a week. I decided to upgrade the firmware to 4.21.1 hoping to resolve this issue. The firmware upgrade completed and all configuration settings were put back as I had before the upgrade.
Since the update, I cannot connect to the internet through my DSL when connecting through the router. I can connect to the internet when my computer is directly connected to the modem. I called Linksys and I was told to reset the router three times. Had no results.
Can anyone help me out with this? Or is there a place where I can download the old firmware that I originally had?
    I have a WRT54G ver 1.1 and Bellsouth DSL
    Thanks

Message Edited by JOHNDOE_06 on 11-20-2007 08:55 AM

    --Update--
I solved the problem. The Bellsouth DSL modem is in bridge mode after it is either reset (hard button) or configured via the web utility.
WITHOUT connecting the router to the modem, configure the router to be PPPoE insted of DHCP. If the router is connected to the modem while still in DHCP mode, the modem will assume the router is a computer. This will kick the modem out of bridge mode.
So the steps to solve the problem are:
    1) Disconnect ethernet between router and modem.
    2) Reset modem / put in bridge mode.
    3) Connect to router via web utility and configure PPPoE settings.
    4) Connect router and DSL modem via ethernet cable.
(Mod Note: Edited due to non-compliance of forum guidelines.)

    hi,
i have had to replace my WRT54G ver#3, with Same model Ver#8.  i set up both my desktop and laptop no problems.  Got both up and running just fine. However reconnecting with my ITOUCH is another issue.  No matter what i have done, including resetting router a second time did not work.  I even took it to the Apple store and it connected there no problem.  Anyone have any suggestions on what the settings should be.  I have the print out of all my network settings available to me.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Linda

If you are online with wireless laptop connecting to your own network ..... I don't think that it is an issue related to router .....
Check the settings in the I-Touch it self...... configure it according to the settings in the router ....
See if it shows connected ....
