WRT54G Ver.6 help

I bought this wireless router almost a year now and I never upgraded its firmware since I bought. The current firmware is 1.00.9. I already setup my secured wireless internet connection that my family and I are currently using. I was wondering. If i upgrade to the newest firmware which is version 1.02.0 and reset my router after iI upgrade, I will lose all my settings, even the password to get into the router. I heard that you can backup all your settings before you reset your router right? I hope so cause I don't wanna go through all that again to setup a secured wireless connection. I know its not hard but still. Thanks alot to all in advance.
I also have one little question. I heard that alot of people that have upgraded to the latest firmware, have had lots of problems with there internet connections and routers. Is it wise for me to upgrade or just stick to version 1.00.9? Thanks a whole lot to all in advance.

Sometimes the phrase "if it isn't broke don't fix it" can be a blessing.  Your router is not that old and I would only update it if you had a reason like you had to reset it anyway.  Most routers do have the option to back up your settings in the Firmware sub tab.  If you upgrade your firmware you will have to reset the Factory Default settings which you would loose all your settings.  If you backed it up you can import the back up and not loose a thing.  However if the firmware is has different options or has changed what ever your back up my not be correct.  I am not sure but I do not think the back up keeps your routers password.

    Hi,
You can try to forward those ports. Under Applications & Games->Port Range Forward. Give the port numbers and your device ip address.

  • Need alot of help setting up a WRT54G ver.6

Ok, all i have is the router, (WRT54G Ver. 6 - Wireless G Broadband Router) Ive lost the box it came in, and everything with it. (I also have the power supply & 2 cords) A friend of mine setup everything for me at my old apartment, but Ive moved and have to do everything on my own this time.
At my old place my computer was the central computer where the broadband modem was, my roommate had a wireless usb card of some kind, that allowed him to connect to the network.
This time i have to have another computer as the central comp and i need a wireless usb card myself. I dont know what kind to get and how much it will be, any suggestions.
I also dont know how to set everything up, and what type of hardware/software i will need, i was hoping all the drivers and sofware would be online but im not sure. Im not sure if the computer here needs a different network card or something similar either.
Im also worried about how my computer is already setup, will i have to delete and redo all the settings already in effect, how do i do all this stuff
Any advice would be very appreciated, i know nothing at all, not even what wires plug into what.

setup modem connected to the internet port on the router and pc to the regular port on the router...reset the router for 10sec. then turn if off for the same amount of time while the router is off turn the modem as well.whats the model of your modem?

Any chance you have an XBox connected to this router? I've got three friends all with WRT54G ver 8 routers with XBoxes connected and it almost seems like something is trying to hack the security password. I'm searching to see if there is then a lock out which requires a manual reset. It just started happening around Christmas time.

  • Step by step complete setup for WRT54G ver.6 with Laptop and XBOX 360

Hello.  I am sorry to post this, I am sure it is a juevenile and redundent question...but I have tried to look for the set up cd (I can find where to download it...though I can find the firmware upgrade or whatever).  My friend at work said it would do all the setup pretty much automatically for me.
I somewhat know computers, but you might go ahead and make your replies VERY lamen's terms or I might not be able to follow.  Anyways, what I need, is a step by step/screen by screen directions for a secure network.  I have made a partial attempt at setting it up and it technically works, but I would feel better if I did the steps a-z in order, so I know that it is done correctly.  I also am not totally confident in its security as it is now.  (Also, technically, I did not check the XBOX again after getting the new laptop, I am just assuming it is still working because it was before).
My problem is I can't seem to find very good directions for setting up the router...I only find partials or confusing directions.
So here are the things I am trying to connect:
    Liksys WRT54G ver. 6
    Gateway Laptop running Windows Vista
    XBOX 360 - WIRED
(I had a PC and a laptop, but they both died at the same time and I have only been able to replace the laptop at this point...the PC will come later and not sure at this point if it will be Wired or not).
I have a cable Modem between the Router and the wall...I didn't look at that for brand/etc...but I can get it ASAP if needed.
Here are the settings that I have so far:
    Changed the Router Name
    Changed the SSID
Have DHCP set to 3  (XBOX, PC, Laptop)
    Wireless SSID Broadcast: Disable
Username and Password changed to my own info
    UPnP: Enable
I may have changed other things without knowing it.  So like I said, a complete, step by step screen by screen set up would be totally appreciated.  I haven't done anything in the security tab, all that is totally foreign to me, so I am just not broadcasting for now until I can get some help setting things up with you guys.
And if someone is familiar with the Laptop/XBOX 360 setup, and I need to change any of the settings on the XBOX itself, could you please include that in your directions?  I know that isn't technically what THIS forum is for, but it would sure be helpful to me if you happen to know both parts anyways.
    Thanks a lot (in advance)!

So all you just need to do is, secure your Wireless Network. Follow the setps bellow and change the settings on your Router.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Internet connectivity problems

    Alright so here's the deal.
I'm on Windows XP with Verizon DSL (in Orange County, CA) that uses a Westell modem (just modem, not modem and router combo).
I have the old Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 router that runs with everything fine.
I just bought the WRT54G Version 6 and connected everything up as needed.  Powered things down and then back up.  And it could not detect an Internet connection, but I could access the router via web browser.
    - Ran the Setup CD and it couldn't find the internet.
    - Upgraded the firmware.
    - I searched the forums and did not find a successful solution.
    - Called my ISP to confirm it is DHCP.
    - Talked to Linksys Support via phone and he had me do all sorts of stuff.  Releasing, Renewing, Local IP Address changes, pinging, MAC, etc.  All this to try to get some sort of IP address with the internet.
    - Tried it with a diff WRT54G Ver 6 (Yeah.  I bought two.  One for me, and one to bring to my parents), and it still didn't work.  (Can't be that both the routers I got are defective.)
    - Searched forums some more and ran across the EasyLink program.  I used it, and it tells me my freaking Wired adaptor is disabled.  Where do I enable it?  Can't be my computer because it all works fine with the old Linksys router I got....or could it?
    - Powered down and back up in many different combinations.
Did all that to no avail.  Anyone got a solution?  I couldn't find anything that worked.  I'm about to go return this and get something else tomorrow.  Maybe if I wake up, there will be a workable solution that is replied back.
Thanks in advance to all those that tried to help and posted something, or didn't post due to having no solution.
    - Chris

Yup Yup Yup.  I tried the WAN address thing and it still didn't work.
I was about to pack everything up and go return the stupid thing.  BUT.....I decided to talk to Verizon DSL support since I hadn't tried that.
    They helped me out good!!!
    Here's the solution.
I plugged in the old router, the BEF, and went to Status to click the DHCP Release.  Then unplugged the old router.
Then per Verizon DSL support instruction....powered down the modem, then powered it back up and waited for lights to stabilize.  Then I plugged in the new router, the WRT.  And went to Status (IP was already autofilled, with internet working) but I still clicked DHCP Renew.
    It all works.  WOOOOOO!!!!
By the way.  The WAN address thing is important.  I went to it on the new, WORKING router and disabled the WAN address.  The internet stopped working.  I re-entered in the WAN address I copied and the internet worked again.  So......yeah.
I hope for all those out there having the same problems as me, and without a solution, see this thread and try this.
Thanks again for your guys' help.
    **edit**
By the way.  Is there a way to stop my internet to being a stickler to this MAC address?  I'm just curious.  I'm gonna go google MAC address and see if I can read anything useful.

  • WRT54G Ver 1.1 Firmware Upgrade

I was experiencing some connection problems that were causing me to cycle the power on my router a few times a week. I decided to upgrade the firmware to 4.21.1 hoping to resolve this issue. The firmware upgrade completed and all configuration settings were put back as I had before the upgrade.
Since the update, I cannot connect to the internet through my DSL when connecting through the router. I can connect to the internet when my computer is directly connected to the modem. I called Linksys and I was told to reset the router three times. Had no results.
Can anyone help me out with this? Or is there a place where I can download the old firmware that I originally had?
    I have a WRT54G ver 1.1 and Bellsouth DSL
    Thanks
(Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)
Message Edited by JOHNDOE_06 on 11-20-2007 08:55 AM

    --Update--
I solved the problem. The Bellsouth DSL modem is in bridge mode after it is either reset (hard button) or configured via the web utility.
WITHOUT connecting the router to the modem, configure the router to be PPPoE insted of DHCP. If the router is connected to the modem while still in DHCP mode, the modem will assume the router is a computer. This will kick the modem out of bridge mode.
So the steps to solve the problem are:
    1) Disconnect ethernet between router and modem.
    2) Reset modem / put in bridge mode.
    3) Connect to router via web utility and configure PPPoE settings.
    4) Connect router and DSL modem via ethernet cable.
(Mod Note: Edited due to non-compliance of forum guidelines.)

  • WRT54G ver 2 Mac and PC issues

    I have...
a WRT54G ver 2, firmware v4.21.1 (latest available for this model),
two PC desktops wired (192.168.1.101) - second desktop not used much),
    a PC laptop wireless (169.254.58.14),
    a Mac Desktop wireless (192.168.1.104),
    and 2 Mac Laptops (169.254.75.54) (169.254.254.36).
    The problem is...
When one of the wireless computers is turned on it won't connect unless the router is powered down and back on. It will be fine until one of the other wireless computers are turned on and now it doesn't connect. It is possible to get them all simultaneously connecting, but difficult. It seems to be in the timing. I still haven’t nailed it down. Frustrating...
    The questions...
    Did I give enough information?
Can I do what I want with this router or do I need to upgrade?
    If can do, what settings?
    If can't, new hardware recommendations?
    Thanx

Thanks! I had already downloaded and installed the latest firmware, but it didn't really help. I set the parameters you described, and bam, all wireless devices work. I shut down and restarted each one to verify, and they can access the network!
    Again, Thanks a lot!

  • Hi, i have had to replace my WRT54G ver#3, with Same mode...

    hi,
i have had to replace my WRT54G ver#3, with Same model Ver#8.  i set up both my desktop and laptop no problems.  Got both up and running just fine. However reconnecting with my ITOUCH is another issue.  No matter what i have done, including resetting router a second time did not work.  I even took it to the Apple store and it connected there no problem.  Anyone have any suggestions on what the settings should be.  I have the print out of all my network settings available to me.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Linda

If you are online with wireless laptop connecting to your own network ..... I don't think that it is an issue related to router .....
Check the settings in the I-Touch it self...... configure it according to the settings in the router ....
See if it shows connected ....

  • WRT54G ver 6, serious issues

I recently bought a WRT54G, ver 6. For a while, it worked. We were happy. Now, we have a wireless connection, but are unable to load any websites.
Regularly resetting the router seems to work, for short periods of time (5-20 minutes, if that).
Our firmware is current, we've spent time on the phone with Linksys (Hi, India!), and everything seems to be correct.
All the computers have Windows XP, ISP is D&E Communications, we have cable internet. We've upgraded drivers and/or wireless cards, to no effect.
In addition, we have one laptop connected to the router via ethernet cable. That computer is unable to access webpages when the other computers are unable to access anything through the wireless network.
Any help would be great, since we're getting very close to returning the router and spending a few more hours on the phone with Linksys to get our money back - the router is less than a month old. This much difficulty is unacceptable.

Did you try going to the administration menu in the web setup page? then to diagonistics sub menu ---> then to ping button --> after which new window appears, where in you can type in any domain name like www.google.com and clcik on ping to check the connectivity. If you get the response then you have the internet connection till your router. If you are able to get response from ping then instead of providing dynamic ip to the pc's you can check with static ip. if it works then something is wrong with DHCP lease.

  • WRT54G ver. 7 GONE MAD!!

    Dear Linksys Community!
I have a WRT54G ver. 7 router, and it has a lot of strange problems. First, I had a ver. 7.00.4 firmware, but sometimes i couldn't get into the admin page (192.168.1.1) so I got the 7.00.7 beta firmware. It worked fine, but I still had problems with it. I wrote to Linksys support, they sent me the final 7.00.7 firmware for my ver.7 router in e-mail. I tried to upgrade from 7.00.7beta to 7.00.7 final, but something wrong happened. The router connected to my computer via ethernet cable, the connection was stable. I logged into 192.168.1.1, I selected the 7.00.7 final firmware, and clicked "Upgrade" in the Firware upgrade section, but about a 25 seconds later the uprgrading process terminated, without any reason. After that, I couldn't get into the admin page, I only got Management mode only, the power LED was flashing, the reset button didn't have any effect (I pushed down for a minute, but nothing happened), and i didn't have internet connection. In management mode, I reinstalled the 7.00.7beta firmware. The router now works, but the signal strenght is very weak (WLAN) now. I had maximum signal strenght before (5/5), now I have maximum 2/5 or 3/5 signal strenght. Also, when I tried to reset my router, the firmware has gone, disappeared, the power LED started flashing again, I get Management mode again, and i had to reinstall the 7.00.7beta again. Also when I change any settings, the whole interface crashes, and I get a white blank page, but it saves my settings. I have to press F5 to refresh the page every time, because ALWAYS get blank page when I click on something. I don't know what should I do, my router has gone mad! Please help me! Thank you forward!

As you have already got the firmware from the Linksys, then you can try to upload that firmware on your router using the TFTP Utility.
Click Download 44.3 KB the TFTP utility.
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Double click the TFTP.exe file and click run.
For Server- Enter the IP Address of the router that you assigned.  By default, the router is 192.168.1.1...
For Password- Enter the password you assigned the router. By default, the router’s password is “admin”.
For File- Click the triple “…” button and browse for the .bin firmware file...
Click Upgrade button to start upgrading.  A progress bar should show up to show the progress.
Once the Upgrade is done press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • WRT54G Ver.2 Trying to set up Online gaming.

I will give an exact detail on what I am trying to do, so it will help you all determine my problem.
I have a Wireless WRT54G ver.2 router and my buddy has the same type of set-up.
I am trying to set up an online game with my friend playing Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour. When we set-up our game, both of our IP's are the 192.168.1.XXX. I try to connect to his I.P., but it tells me "Connection timed out". We have tried to disconnect the router on his end, and it still gives the same error. When I go into the options in the game, it says my I.P is 192.168.1.100. How can we connect if we are both using routers that have this similar IP. It is a pain in the @$$ to have to disconnect both of our routers just to get a few games in. So this is my situation, and I hope this is enough info to help me out. Thanks in advance. ~Donte

    Hi there!
You need to forward ports (by doing port forwarding on your router) first so it can pass the router's firewall...and by the way, the IP address the game is referring to is the public "Internet" IP address which is on the status tab of your router. For the forwarding instructions click here
