WRT54G ver 6, serious issues

I recently bought a WRT54G, ver 6. For a while, it worked. We were happy. Now, we have a wireless connection, but are unable to load any websites.
Regularly resetting the router seems to work, for short periods of time (5-20 minutes, if that).
Our firmware is current, we've spent time on the phone with Linksys (Hi, India!), and everything seems to be correct.
All the computers have Windows XP, ISP is D&E Communications, we have cable internet. We've upgraded drivers and/or wireless cards, to no effect.
In addition, we have one laptop connected to the router via ethernet cable. That computer is unable to access webpages when the other computers are unable to access anything through the wireless network.
Any help would be great, since we're getting very close to returning the router and spending a few more hours on the phone with Linksys to get our money back - the router is less than a month old. This much difficulty is unacceptable.

Did you try going to the administration menu in the web setup page? then to diagonistics sub menu ---> then to ping button --> after which new window appears, where in you can type in any domain name like www.google.com and clcik on ping to check the connectivity. If you get the response then you have the internet connection till your router. If you are able to get response from ping then instead of providing dynamic ip to the pc's you can check with static ip. if it works then something is wrong with DHCP lease.

  • WRT54GS Ver 6 - Connectivity Issues.

I purchased this WRT54GS about a month ago, and got it working. Everything worked fine, then this morning I started having issues. My Internet keeps 'locking up' to a certain point. When it happens:
-I lose the ability to go to any web page
-My online game I play connects fine, and works normally - but then it crashes when I try to go to a new Zone
-Internet applications (Anti Virus, Spybot) can't connect to update - they don't 'see' the internet
Yet - my VOIP continues to work normally. However, to use any other Internet functionality, I have to use Ipconfig /release and /renew.
I have bypassed the Linksys router, and connected directly to the Cable Modem - and the problem vanishes. I tried updating the Firmware, no change.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?
*Edit = I've checked out all the configuration options I can, and checked out every FAQ I could find. I hope someone reads this soon who can offer some advice.

"Frunple" is right.Your problem is not unique and has been experienced by many customers who bought version 5 and 6 of this router. I was one of them who had 3 or more random disconnects a day for over 2 months. Linksys tech support tried very hard to correct this with many different reconfigurations but nothing helped. Exchanging the orignal router to two more version 6 routers also did not cure the problem. Only when I changed the router to a WRT54GL did the problem stop instantly.
The reason is that the WRT54GL is really a resurrected WRT54G version 4 which was based on a different design. Starting with version 5 and 6 Linksys changed the RAM from 16 MB to 8 MB and the Flash Memory from 4 MB to 2 MB. They also changed the operating system to "VxWorks". Something is very wrong in this design.
If you want to cure the problem then try to replace your router with a version 4 or earlier or get a WRT54GL which is really a "WRT54G version 4" with a new name.
Since I did change I have now not had any disconnects for one month.

  • WRT54G ver 7 speed issues.

    Hi all.
Let me go through the issue I have come across tonight. I have a WRT54G version 7 cable router, and I have Telewest as my ISP, with the 4Mb service. My computer is hard wired into the router, and have no wireless clients connected at the time. I get packet loss, (quite a bit) and my download speeds are abismal. Setting my computer to dhcp or fixed IP makes no difference. I even forced 100 Full duplex on the LAN card just to be sure. I phoned up TW tech support, and they were pretty helpful, and asked me to bypass the router, and plug directly into the modem and turn dhcp on my pc and reboot the modem.
All works fine, no speed issues, download test from here is perfect. They asked me to download something off their server here http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk and I am getting full 480kB/s And here is the test plugged right into the modem http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117018476054017621619.html
Happy days, right? Problem with the router, right?
    Well.. It gets interesting.
I then do a firmware update on the router, reset it to factory defaults, and re-run the test going through the router. Here is the pitiful result., which is the same as before. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117018491367303621734.html
Ok... so problem with the router still... right?
I tried the blueyonder file download, and guess what... 480KB/s again, downloaded a 5 meg file in about 12 seconds.
    What I have tried:
Forcing the LAN to 100Meg full duplex
    Firmware upgrade on the router
    Reset router to factory defaults
Rebooted pc, router and modem at the same time.
Use a static IP with correct settings (same speed)
    Use DHCP through the router
Connected directly to the cable modem and use DHCP (works fine)
PC windows xp SP2 fully patched.
No software firewalls. (at any time)
    Disabling UPNP on the router
Turned flow control off on the LAN adapter (shouldnt be on in the first place, thats half duplex >.)
I cant see why my computer downloads from blueyonder fine with no speed issues at all, and yet any other website, I get extremely poor performance. This router has been working fine for about a month now, just needed a few reboots once in a while, but which router doesnt. My upload speeds seem pretty constant, and dont seem to vary regardless of router or not. Seems like inbound traffic is getting jammed.
Anyone able to shed some thought? Sorry for the wall of text, just thought I would let you know everything on the first post instead of having to reply a dozen times.

try TCP Optimiser .. This should adjust the MTU settings of the NIC on the PC ...

  • WRT54GS Ver 6 connection issues

Does anyone know what would be causing my router to loose connection every week? I've done whatever was suggested in the forums here and still every week I have to do a hard reset to get the router back online. When this issue occurs I'm unable to log into the router's admin page, yet I can ping the router from all my PC's. This is the 2nd Linksys router that's I've gone through and both had the latest firmware. I'm thinking of moving to DLink or Netgear. Thoughts?

As you are loosing connection every week ....it seems that routers software is not working properly ........ download the latest firmware from http://linksys.com/download ...... after upgrade reset the router for 20-30 seconds .....
check if it is showing same problem.....

  • WRT54GS ver. 6 issues

Initially the main problem is with installation, when I get to step 10 it configures the router, but the problem is when the router searches for the internet connection. First it goes slow, then jumps and stops at 35%, after that it jumps to the 60's stops again. Jumps to 100% and then it states it couldnt connect to the internet and to turn the modem on and off. I have time warner cable, if that helps.

Hi...you can try to set up the router using the web interface...First off , make sure that you have the right connections i.e modem -> router's internet port  and then from port 1 of the router -> computer......Then open IE and type http://192.168.1.1 . keep the username blank and the default password " admin ". You will see the router set up page.
Click " Mac Address Clone " subtab..click "enable" , then "clone your pc's mac"...unplug the power from the router and the modem..after a min replug the modem power cable and when the lights go sold , go for the router....

  • WRT54G ver 2 Mac and PC issues

    I have...
a WRT54G ver 2, firmware v4.21.1 (latest available for this model),
two PC desktops wired (192.168.1.101) - second desktop not used much),
    a PC laptop wireless (169.254.58.14),
    a Mac Desktop wireless (192.168.1.104),
    and 2 Mac Laptops (169.254.75.54) (169.254.254.36).
    The problem is...
When one of the wireless computers is turned on it won't connect unless the router is powered down and back on. It will be fine until one of the other wireless computers are turned on and now it doesn't connect. It is possible to get them all simultaneously connecting, but difficult. It seems to be in the timing. I still haven’t nailed it down. Frustrating...
    The questions...
    Did I give enough information?
Can I do what I want with this router or do I need to upgrade?
    If can do, what settings?
    If can't, new hardware recommendations?
    Thanx

Thanks! I had already downloaded and installed the latest firmware, but it didn't really help. I set the parameters you described, and bam, all wireless devices work. I shut down and restarted each one to verify, and they can access the network!

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Issues

    Hi
I hope this helps people.  I am extremely disappointed with Linksys support.  I have talked to at least 6 support people for a least 1 hour each without a resolution to a simple problem.  My problem is that I can not get onto the internet with my access points(WAP54G .ver 3.1)using WPA security with WRT54GS ver 3.  I decided to do my own testing since Linksys did not.  I configured my WRTGS with no security.  I used my ssid, channel, broadcast ssid turned on.  I configured my WAP54G exactly the same.  I was able to ping the WAP54G with no problem.  My next test was to test WEP security.  The only changes I made were the exncryption to 128 bit with a code on both the WRT54GS and WAP54G.  I was able to ping it with no problem.  Since I needed more security for my house since the houses are almost right on top of each other, with many people using wireless in their homes, I changed my security to WPA Personal.  I changed the code and of course saved all of the changes, like I did previously.  I tried to ping the the WAP54G.  I couldn't ping it to save my life.  I figured that the hardware was up to date on the WRT54GS ver 3 so I purchased a new WRT54G ver 6 router thinking that this will support WPA Personal. (I already knew that WPA Personall worked on that Router with version 1.01 of the firmware.)
I noticed on the Linksys website that there was a new firmware for the router which is version 1.02.  I had to update the firmware on my router since the version that was on it was 1.00.52.  My firware is now 1.02. I started the same tests I performed on the WRT54GS ver 3.  I turned off security on both the WAP54G & WRT54G.  I tried to ping the WAP54G.  I could not do it.  Now I know the WAP54G worked because I proved it earlier.  I reported the problem to Linksys and asked to talk to a supervisor.  I never received a call back from her.  This is the lousiest support I have ever expereinced.  I explained to tech support that the WAP54G's are no use to me since I can't talk to them with this router using WPA security or anything else.  It was extremely frustrating dealing with their technical support.  This is suppose to be a simple setup that should take about 5-10 minutes.  Instead it has cost me days of calling them and many hours, trying to figure why it did not work with absolutely no help from them.  Does anyone have any good suggestions?
I would like to get a hold of firmware 1.01 because I know that works.  Thanks
    Scot

    Hi,
This is an update to my first post.  I was correct that ver 1.02 of the firmware for the WRT54G ver 6 of the router has some problems with it.  It does not allow you to use WPA encryption.  Version 1.01 of the firmware does allow you to use the WPA encryption.  Hopefully Linksys will fix this problem.  I will continue to use 1.01 until this is fixed.

  • W540 + Ultra docks = big serious issue

Hello everyone, We recently ordered 30+ x240s and w540 laptops using the ultradocks. Here's the prequel
    1. initially they had the issue with monitors going blank, that has been fixed with a firmware update
    2. there was a second firmware update ver 2.21 that fixes some issues with HP monitors. Ok , done.
Ok now all is well, we have the x240s on the docks and w540s with their docks + the 175w powersupply supplies etc.
Now we have users that wanted 27inch and some 30 inch monitors and a big big problem comes up.
The docks cannot drive anything higher then those 24inch monitors (1920x1200). the 27 inch (2560x1440) and the 30inch (2560x1600) does not work AT all.
it does not work with even ONE of those monitors hooked into the dock not speaking of the 2 that users wanted.
So w540+ultra dock + 1 27/30 inch monitor = nothing, blank screen, go to display settings and it detects a grey option
Now, the w540 without the ultra dock and hooked directly into a 27/30 inch monitor = no problem, we have full functionality.
We have tried every combination to try to get it to work and it's a no go.
Researched the dock's DVI port and see if we can possibly use that, nope, the DVI is only single link so our only option are the 2 display ports on the dock.
Of course those don't work at all. We have opened a ticket with lenovo and it's been escalated, awaiting responds.
This maybe a serious issue I am seeing here since we have 30+ docks and more coming. (yes we have tested on them all and their firmwares are 2.21)
Anyways, if anyone has run into this please confirm. Suggestions are welcome, but I am sure we have tried just about everything.
    Thanks Everyone, J

I was able to connect a W540 to an Ultra Dock (170W) in "Standard" mode and then get an external monitor working at a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The monitor is a Samsung U28D590D connected via the DisplayPort on the docking station. Note that "Advanced" mode was very unstable, and often crashed within a few minutes. Standard mode works when connected via DisplayPort but would also crash instantly and repeatedly if connected via HDMI.
Tested with a variety of bios, firmware and driver versions. Including System BIOS v2.17 & v2.18. Docking station firmware v2.22 and multiple Intel and NVIDIA driver versions. None worked with HDMI or in Advanced mode. Hopefully this gets fixed at some point.

  • WRT54G Ver 1.1 Firmware Upgrade

I was experiencing some connection problems that were causing me to cycle the power on my router a few times a week. I decided to upgrade the firmware to 4.21.1 hoping to resolve this issue. The firmware upgrade completed and all configuration settings were put back as I had before the upgrade.
Since the update, I cannot connect to the internet through my DSL when connecting through the router. I can connect to the internet when my computer is directly connected to the modem. I called Linksys and I was told to reset the router three times. Had no results.
Can anyone help me out with this? Or is there a place where I can download the old firmware that I originally had?
    I have a WRT54G ver 1.1 and Bellsouth DSL
    Thanks
(Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)
Message Edited by JOHNDOE_06 on 11-20-2007 08:55 AM

    --Update--
I solved the problem. The Bellsouth DSL modem is in bridge mode after it is either reset (hard button) or configured via the web utility.
WITHOUT connecting the router to the modem, configure the router to be PPPoE insted of DHCP. If the router is connected to the modem while still in DHCP mode, the modem will assume the router is a computer. This will kick the modem out of bridge mode.
So the steps to solve the problem are:
    1) Disconnect ethernet between router and modem.
    2) Reset modem / put in bridge mode.
    3) Connect to router via web utility and configure PPPoE settings.
    4) Connect router and DSL modem via ethernet cable.
(Mod Note: Edited due to non-compliance of forum guidelines.)

  • Hi, i have had to replace my WRT54G ver#3, with Same mode...

    hi,
i have had to replace my WRT54G ver#3, with Same model Ver#8.  i set up both my desktop and laptop no problems.  Got both up and running just fine. However reconnecting with my ITOUCH is another issue.  No matter what i have done, including resetting router a second time did not work.  I even took it to the Apple store and it connected there no problem.  Anyone have any suggestions on what the settings should be.  I have the print out of all my network settings available to me.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Linda

If you are online with wireless laptop connecting to your own network ..... I don't think that it is an issue related to router .....
Check the settings in the I-Touch it self...... configure it according to the settings in the router ....
See if it shows connected ....

  • WRT54G Ver 7.0

    Hi Fadeel,
I have exactly the same problem. My previous version (v2) broke down and I received a version 7 instead.
Took me some houres to figure out that the problems I had were caused by the router itself.
Also a long chatsession with Linksys USA and phonecalls with the local helpdesk. But Linksys people are very nice and helpfull, but do not always know were they are talking about, in my humble opinion. Got the advice to upgrade the firmware (there isn't any  ) while they knew what the version was.
I bought a (secondhand) version 2.2 and it is working fine now.
I expect that we will have a new firmwareversion soon, but we as customer are running a "User Acceptance Test" while we normally pay for the stuff. Not Cisco worthy!!
My version is a -EU one, yours too?
    Best regards, Rob.

  • Xbox360 WRT54GS ver. 6 NAT problems

my xbox 360's NAT is set to strict and prevens me from connecting with a lot of otehr players and my wireless router is a WRT54GS ver. 6

for xbox 360 having NAT problem... you need to call Xbox to ask for the port numbers to open...now if your isp is dsl then call them up and set the modem to bridge to set the rtr to pppoe...in this way we will be able eliminate the multiple NAT issues and for your xbox to work...

  • WRT54G ver 6 Port forwarding question

Howdy... I just purchased the WRT54G ver 6 router to replace my old wired one that was fried after losing power one night... plugged into a $60 surge protector... but I digress... I have 2 PCs plugged into this router... neither are wireless. I host a website and so I setup the router to forward port 80 to the webserver... The loading of images has become incredibly slow. Probably 3 to 4 Xs as slow as the old router... If I plug my cable modem into the pc direct it seems fine, so I dont see a bandwidth issue or upload problem... Seems to be at the router and more specific where the router is forwarding the request. Has anyone run into this? Are there settings on the router somewhere that I can tweak?

Try to lower your MTU settings.

  • WRT54G ver.2

A couple weeks ago very soon after a snow storm my wireless kept disconnecting after repeat re-powering. I contacted the ISP because of their long history of various issues and figured it had to do with weather and service signal. They said it was fine when they checked it over the telephone. Then they sent a technician. He said their signal and their modem were functioning good. He continued to say my Linksys router was the problem. They told me this numerous times before over the last couple of years and repeatedly it was their issue and they finally fixed it with many technician visits and discoveries. So, I was inclined to think here we go again. If I connect my computer direct to their modem I get a consistent connection to the internet, no interruptions, normal, using it now. If I connect through the Linksys WRT54G ver.2 router either wireless or to the hard wired network system the service repeatedly fails rather quickly after re-powering and the 3 green lights to the far left flash fast simultaneously. Is this diagnostic for anything? I'm know inclined to believe the issue may be the router.  I am going to try the "Hard Reset" suggested to another poster. Thanks for any help. Bill Hite Jr.

Yes, you can try to reset the router and reconfigure it.
Also try to upgrade the firmware on your router.
Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port on the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer.
Open the setup page of the router and go to Administration tab. Click on Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on your router it is recommended that you should reset the router.
Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and try to reconfigure it.

  • WRT54G ver . 5 and AppleTV

I seem to be having an issue with multicast between the wired ports on a LinkSys WRT54G ver. 5 and an AppleTV which is on the wireless network. The Bonjour service, which I believe uses multicast, seems to not be able to cross the boundry from wired to wireless on the router.
For instance, I typically use an iPhone connected wirelessly to my WRT54G to control my AppleTV, also on the wireless network, but if I move the AppleTV to a wired port, the iPhone cannot see the AppleTV anymore even though both can go out to the internet via the cable modem plugged into the WRT54G.
Any ideas? I just updated to the most recent version of the firmware, 1.02.7

WRT54G v5 does not support WMM feature...I would suggest you to either go for N-Series router like WRT160N or upgrade the router with 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt.However upgrading the router with 3rd party firmware will void the warranty period of the router.
