WRT54G Ver. 6 Wireless Access Problem

This router had been working but started having problems and dropping me off the internet via the wired connection to my ISP's modem.  I disconnected the WRT54G and connected directly to the modem and everything worked okay.   Based on Linksys troubleshooting web link I upgraded the firmware.  After this I had to go back and setup the router again.  It works fine now as a hardwired router but now I can't access the router thru its wireless capability with any of my computers or handhelds.   It was working fine wirelessly before.
I've set everything up like it was with WEP passphrase, etc.  I did change the passphrase and so the key is different, but I've changed this on the Palm and the Laptops to match.
When trying to access it from any of the devices I see it in the list, it will try and connect but and the message appears "Obtainaing IP address..." but it never gets it and the connection fails.  This happens on my Palm, and two laptops.

Thanks for the assistance.   I am using a Palm PDA and couldn't get it to work for the life of me.  Ends up after checking with Linksys's live session (that really works great) I was convinced the problem was not the router.   So I contacted Palm and through their live session I found out I needed to delete my old connection configuration and re-start from scratch creating a new one.   Apparently the old setup configuration on a Palm PDA keeps some old data that was messing me up.  It worked fine after re-adding the new logon configuration.
If anything I've learned quite abit about my router and my PDA.
thanks again...

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Internet connectivity problems

    Alright so here's the deal.
I'm on Windows XP with Verizon DSL (in Orange County, CA) that uses a Westell modem (just modem, not modem and router combo).
I have the old Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 router that runs with everything fine.
I just bought the WRT54G Version 6 and connected everything up as needed.  Powered things down and then back up.  And it could not detect an Internet connection, but I could access the router via web browser.
    - Ran the Setup CD and it couldn't find the internet.
    - Upgraded the firmware.
    - I searched the forums and did not find a successful solution.
    - Called my ISP to confirm it is DHCP.
    - Talked to Linksys Support via phone and he had me do all sorts of stuff.  Releasing, Renewing, Local IP Address changes, pinging, MAC, etc.  All this to try to get some sort of IP address with the internet.
    - Tried it with a diff WRT54G Ver 6 (Yeah.  I bought two.  One for me, and one to bring to my parents), and it still didn't work.  (Can't be that both the routers I got are defective.)
    - Searched forums some more and ran across the EasyLink program.  I used it, and it tells me my freaking Wired adaptor is disabled.  Where do I enable it?  Can't be my computer because it all works fine with the old Linksys router I got....or could it?
    - Powered down and back up in many different combinations.
Did all that to no avail.  Anyone got a solution?  I couldn't find anything that worked.  I'm about to go return this and get something else tomorrow.  Maybe if I wake up, there will be a workable solution that is replied back.
Thanks in advance to all those that tried to help and posted something, or didn't post due to having no solution.
    - Chris

Yup Yup Yup.  I tried the WAN address thing and it still didn't work.
I was about to pack everything up and go return the stupid thing.  BUT.....I decided to talk to Verizon DSL support since I hadn't tried that.
    They helped me out good!!!
    Here's the solution.
I plugged in the old router, the BEF, and went to Status to click the DHCP Release.  Then unplugged the old router.
Then per Verizon DSL support instruction....powered down the modem, then powered it back up and waited for lights to stabilize.  Then I plugged in the new router, the WRT.  And went to Status (IP was already autofilled, with internet working) but I still clicked DHCP Renew.
    It all works.  WOOOOOO!!!!
By the way.  The WAN address thing is important.  I went to it on the new, WORKING router and disabled the WAN address.  The internet stopped working.  I re-entered in the WAN address I copied and the internet worked again.  So......yeah.
I hope for all those out there having the same problems as me, and without a solution, see this thread and try this.
Thanks again for your guys' help.
    **edit**
By the way.  Is there a way to stop my internet to being a stickler to this MAC address?  I'm just curious.  I'm gonna go google MAC address and see if I can read anything useful.

  • Xbox360 WRT54GS ver. 6 NAT problems

my xbox 360's NAT is set to strict and prevens me from connecting with a lot of otehr players and my wireless router is a WRT54GS ver. 6

for xbox 360 having NAT problem... you need to call Xbox to ask for the port numbers to open...now if your isp is dsl then call them up and set the modem to bridge to set the rtr to pppoe...in this way we will be able eliminate the multiple NAT issues and for your xbox to work...

  • WRT54G ver 6. Buffering problems when viewing live streaming Video!

Whenever my computer is connected to the computer through linksys WRT54G router, Windows Media Player do a lot of buffering. (after every 10 seconds or so). But when I connect to the internet directly through the cable modem, I don't see any buffering and I can watch the video without any problem.
    Any advice!

I've tried most suggestions with no luck.  I've got a WRT54G v6 router with the 1.01.1 updated firmware.  Videos from MSNBC, CNN, CBS, etc... just don't want to run smoothly- and this is on a wired connection to the router.  All 3 computers hooked to router have this problem.  Choppy video or the video stops and the audio continues- or than everything pauses.  I have decent connect speeds- avg test is:
9.66Mbps or 1.20MBytes/sec... I switched back to my old Linksys wired router and the videos played fine-connections speeds were consistent as well.  I use the wireless access for a Wii. All computers are wired into the router.  I am figuring it MUST be the router since my old router makes the problem go away...but I need the wireless access on the WRT54G for my Wii.  I did not notice if this problem was there before I upgraded the firmware since I did the upgrade when I installed the new router.  Thanks for any advice.

  • Lion OS start-up causes wireless access problems

I installed Lion last week. Now when I turn on my Mac and it boots-up, I get a gray screen and I have to enter my system's password. When the OS does start my wireless access is non-functional unless I do a restart. Then it seems to work OK, except Safari will sometimes hang-up and indicate there is no internet access, eventhough my wireless is connected and working - I can still get mail, etc. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Start your system by holding down the option key (alt) and choose your system disk as start volume.

I guess that you have installed Lion as an Upgrade from 10.6.8.
If so, you should perform two steps now.
Perform a permissions repair with the Disk Utility on your system disk.
    Don't bother about upcoming warnings during that. It's normal. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448 )
Perform the following steps to make your wireless run smooth again.
According to Apple support, some configuration files may get damaged or corrupt by time, after updates or upgrades and should get deleted occasionally.
Switch off wifi on the machine.
Then go on and delete the files mentioned below.
You will find the files on your system drive (not your home folder) As you are using Lion, the Library is hidden. You have to use (menu bar) "go to" -> "go to folder" on finder to access them.
    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist
    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist
    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
If there are files in this folders with the same name but additional .orig at the end, delete them too.
It is possible that not all files are on your system. That will be ok.
The files will get newly created by system on reboot.
    For that reboot the machine.
    Join your wireless again.
If the problem (unlikely) persists, report back here.

  • Using a WRT54G as a wireless access point with a WRT610N gateway router

I have just replaced my WRT54G gateway router with a WRT610N and everything is fine.  However, I want to know if it is possible for me to use the old WRT54G as an access point/wireless bridge on a different floor to the gateway.. that is I want the WRT54G to connect wirelessly as a router to the WRT610N gateway router (not cabling them on the LAN ports) and then I want to use its LAN ports on the WRT54G for local cabled devices rather than use it as a wireless extender. I have read various post but most seem to suggest cabling between the routers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

With Linksys firmware: no. Not possible. A Linksys wireless router won't operate as bridge. It won't connect wireless to other devices. You have to run a cable
With 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt or tomato: you can configure the router as wireless bridge or repeater. Please check the documentation of the 3rd party firmware to find out if your router model and version is compatible. Please remember, that a bridge or repeater with the WRT54G will slow down your whole wireless network.

  • How do I configure WRT54G as a wireless access point?

Ater a whole series of problems related to Vista, a WAP54G, Airport xpress, wireless printers, etc. plus at least three hours on the phone with Linksys tech support acessing my computer remotely and still not fixing the problems, I dumped my WRT54GC for a Belkin-N router.  I set it up over the weekend and slowly regained internet access, then the pinter, then the Airports.
I still would like to have an access point because my signal strength even with the new N router is too weak downstairs to allow my PS3 to connect to it.  I cannot figure out how to configure the WAP54G to make it work.  I want to take a shot with the WRT54GC.  From what I've read, I should be able to do it.
I can get into the router (referring to the Linksys) no problem.  I can reconfigure it to an extent, changing the IP address to the recommended 192.168.1.2.  I do this by running an ethernet cable from my PC to the router.  Howver, after changing the IP address in the router I can't get into it any more using the new IP address.  When I attach teh Linksys router to the Belkin I can't get in either.
Both the Linksys and the Belkin use 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address for each device.
I would like to know what settings I need to change i nteh WRT54G to turn it ino an access point -- an extenson of my existing network with teh Belkin router attached to the Comcast modem.  I have looked at various how-to's and they all seem to assume I am connecting the two routers with an ethernet cable.  If it's not clear at this point, I'd like to connect them wirelessly.
    Thanks.

Thanks so much for the reply.
I was working with it all last night and somethign strange happened.  After reading some other info on the internets, I changed the IP address on the WRT to 192.168.2.1.  It updated, I then ran the wire from the Belkin to the WRT, I typed in 192.168.2.1, it took me to the Linksys setup page, but when I clicked "wireless" in the WRT setup, it took me to the Belkin setup page.  How in the world did that happen?
Armed with tis new info, I did a hard reset on the WRT -- assuming it would change the WRT back to 192.168.1.1 -- got into the setup, turned off DHCP, left the IP as .1.1, and then wired it again into the Belkin.  I can now get into the setup of either one.
Here's the thing:  I don't want the two routers wired together.  I want to move the WRT downstairs so a PS3 can pick up the signal.  I want the WRT to wirelessly relay that signal to the Belkin to get the PS3 onto the net.  I can't run a wire from the Belkin to the WRT.
I've read conflicting reports about whether the  WRT can do this.  Other sites suggest adding 3rd party firmware to add that functionality but that will definitely push the bounds of my abilities and likely exceed them.  So, can the WRT even function in this way?
Inre the WAP, I don' know why but my ability to access the setup menu via 192.168.1.245 is very hit or miss -- much miss than hit.  It makes no sense unless there is a bad connection somewhere because I hard reset, wire it to my laptop, put in the IP, and time out 19 times out of 20.  I've got the MAC address for the router, and I think I know I want it to function as a repeater, but I've not been able to get that working right eihter.
    Thanks for any further reply.

  • Wrt54g as a wireless access point

alright i recently changed around my configuration with my wrt54g wireless router. I have made it into an access point which i was unaware is better. Im kinda new to the networking deal though it is what i want to do as a career and access points are new to me. so to the point of this post... when i make it an access point instead of the router i cannot access the admin setup page anymore. I know that when its the DHCP server you type in the default gateway that your given and the admin page pops up... well when its just an access point the gateway is from your router box not the linksys. so how if at all possible am i able to access the setup for the linksys if say i wanted to change the SSID of my network? i appreciate any help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It depends. If you have another gateway router then you should assign a LAN IP address inside the gateway router LAN. For instance, if your gateway router uses 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 then you could assign a LAN IP address of 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0, turn off the DHCP server and do the LAN-LAN connection.
If you only have a simple modem and the computers make a direct connection to your ISP then you have to set up a static IP address temporarily. Assuming you did not change the LAN IP address of the WRT from 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 you would assign a static IP address 192.168.1.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on the computer. With this static IP address the computer can access http://192.168.1.1/ After that you change the computer back to DHCP (Retrieve IP address automatically).

  • RW180W wireless access problem

I have 2 access points on my LAN, the built in one on the RV180W (rv180ap) and an Edimax (edimaxap) access point.
I have had both working without any problems with my laptop (OpenSuse 12.1 and Windows Vista) using the RV180W in AP mode with another (Billion) router but I am having problems using the RV180W as the router..
With the RV180W acting as the router, I have been able to get a properly working connection with rv180ap and edimaxap but if I change my laptop from using one to the other, I loose the ability to reach the WAN (LAN access remains fine). Eventually, after say an hour, the problem clears but I then find I can not reach the WAN if I switch back to my orginal connection.
That at least was the situation when I was using my own DHCP server. When I use the RV180W's own DHCP server, the second wireless connection I try  fails 9/10 times because it can not get an IP address (on the 1/10 I get a connection but no WAN).
    Using Firmware 1.0.1.9

I've added another access point to the LAN.
Changing between the two external access points works perfectly.
Changing between either of these and the RV180W's internal access point causes the problems mentioned in my previous post.
I am aiming to have the RV180W with one of the other access points for roaming access but I can't with this happening.
    Any ideas?

  • Wired/Wireless access problems

We have recently moved home and the new ISP's ADSL line (Netgear 632) has gone live and whilst I am wired directly to the Aiport I get a full internet connection.
Whilst using the base station wirlessly I get annoying problems,; graphics won't load, pages won't load (sometimes they do if I hit reload a bunch of times).
My daughter's iBook works fine with the same connection no problems.
I have updated the base station firmware, used default settings wherever possible, and otherwise changed nothing.
So why can't I access the internet without problems?
I don't know where else to go with the trouble shooting process except ask here.
    Thanks for any advice/help.

What Wireless Router are you using (Brand and Model)
    Airport Extreme (5.7 firmware updated)
Have you checked with the Router Manufactures site and got the latest Firmware Update for there Router.
    Done
Remember when you use the term Airport it is really no more thn the term that Apple uses for there Wireless Technology which includes all of there products using the term Airport, which includes.
    Airport Card
    Airport Extreme Card.
    Airport Express Base Station
    Airport Extreme Base Station
If I read your explination right you are wired direct from the Ethernet to your Netgear you are Good.
I connect usually using the Wi-Fi part, and this is when it doesn't work properly. Sites not found, graphiccs missing etc. All of which are obtainable when connecting to the Aiport with a CAT5 cable or using my daughters iBoook, so I am not sure wher the problem is.
But when activating and changing from Ethernet to Airport in your System Preferences and NETWORK settings you are not so good.
Be sure when using Wireless you have the settings changed in the Network settings to AIRPORT. The little green dot must be showing and you need to drag it to the top of the list.

  • WRT54G ver. 6 connection problem

Hi, I just bought a WRT54G wireless router and I had no problem in installing it and connecting my computers either wireless or through the wired hub. However, I do have a very annoying problem: while all my devices maintain connection with the router, the internet connection is lost very frequentely, and it does not come back until I power off the router. Before having the router (my laptop was plugged directly into the wall) the connection was very good, never had any problem, no connection loss , nothing. Technically, the router does not lose the connectivity, it still has a valid IP address from the provider, I just cannot use any internet services. If I try renew IP on tthe router it does not work eithre, it drops the current IP, but it does not acquire a new one. The connection is lost usually after some period of inactiviy (i.e. if I am going to eat something for 5 minutes and come back, the connection is down). When I work continuously it seems to be ok, only when I have a break the problem occurs. The problem occurs on both Linux and Windows systems with bot wireless and wired connection. I updated the firmware to the latest version. I am on the verge of returning the unit as I think this is unacceptable, but before I wanted to see if it is fixable or if anyone else has it. thanks Tibi

Exactly same problem....now I can't connect at all (Vista or XP box). Connection sometimes says strong...sometimes limited...never an actual connection. This has worked in the past, but very spotty. Would have issue and then have to power off router and reset. Now that is not even working. Very frustrating!

  • WRT54G - V.7 - Wireless connection problem - more users

    Hi all,
    i have the router WRT54G v7 - firmware 7.00.8
I noticed that when we are in 3 or 4 wireless clients the connection is very unstable, slow response (few minutes), connection drops, latency to a server increases from 50ms to 1000ms for few seconds.
Somethimes it's impossible to access to the internet ...even to the router pages (192.168.1.1.).
Connection seems fine in the Win 7 wireless conectivity ... but when you try to access to the web or ping a site, the results are random. Somethimes gives a response .. but mostly not-reachable.
Is there anything i can do to solve or at least improve this matter?
    Ty for any tip,
    Frluga

Hi, around the beginning of June we had power outages and around six of them in three hours. The computer would not turn on and the wrouter is fine and the modem is too. I just bought a ps3 the other day and I thought I could get directly onto it by the wrouter to the modem online. the wrouter distance is aroundthirty feet straight line except they are on differen floors. the signal is 100% and the sucerity is wpa-psk (TKIP). i use to be able to hop right on w/o the security and it was in none. there is an error message saying that key exchange timed out. i have been doing some reading and wondering why no one uses the wpa-psk(TKIP) connection. but it seems to be a simple fix just eneter it manualy for wep. my question is, is wpa-psk ... a longer exchange time to do than wep. also could i switch the wrouter to my second comp, change the settings to wep and put it back on the modem to the broken down computer.

  • WRT54G v3.0 wireless connection problem

    Hi
I recently upgraded my WRT54 G v3.0 wireless router firmware to 4.21.1 (previously was 4.20.7). My router wireless settings are same as before: Mixed, channel 6,  WPA personal, TKIP. DHCP server is enabled.
If I use a LAN cable the computer acquires the IP address and connection works normally. If I use my wireless card the computer does not acquire the IP address and I can't get connection. I set the IP, subnet mask, DNS server, and gateway manually the computer connects properly and I get connection but after a few seconds (random time, max a couple minutes) the connection freezes. There is no errors the signal is strong and the indication is that it is connected but I can't even access the router (192.168.1.1). If I push repair the connection is reestablished but again just for a few secs. After a few similar actions even repair stops working, but if I connect the LAN cable everything is working!
It is annoying. I have a wireless router but I can only properly work with cable connection.
I tried with different computers and different wireless boards (4 different ones!) and the result is the same. Sounds likea problem with the router.
My router is connected to a cable modem Thomson THG540.
Can anyone help me on this?
    Thanks

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.  If you have not reset the router to factory defaults since your last firmware upgrade, then please do this now and see if it corrects your problem.
If you still have a problem, then the next most likely cause is simply a poor wireless connection.  You said that the "signal is strong", but this does not rule out a poor wireless connection.  Poor connections can be caused by interference from other wireless devices, particularly those on or near channel 6 that you are using.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings.)  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  You should connect automatically (it may take up to 2 minutes).  If you still have trouble, temporarily turn off your computer software firewall, and see if that helps.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching from WEP to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
    Hope this helps.
