WRT54G Wired Security?

Ok, I have searched throught the posts but nothing really dwells on my desired information.
Here is the situation.
I am in Iraq and I recently purchased and installed a Satellite Internet system to a tune of $3222 for hardware and I am paying $450 a month for 512/256.  All systems have a total Bandwidth cap unless you pay an extreme amount of money.  The system came with 5 IP's.  The Modem is an iDirect 3000 series with one Lan port.  I have this connected to a Linksys WRT54G router.  Currently I have the single IP set in the router and enable DCHP so all user computers have automatic IP.  For wireless, I am using MAC filter and security with SSID not being broadcast.
Problem is, a few people have access to the office when I am not around.  Normally I don't mind them using a drop to check mail and such, but I am worried many of these soldiers are downloading large amounts of data and are going to exceed my total bandwidth cap, which will effect my work requirements, I am a contractor.
At one time, I had a Belkin Router, which allowed MAC filtering for wired connections as well, I do not see this on the WRT54G, does it exist?
I guess I can manually assign IP addresses to the few allowed to connect, but I like the simplicity of the MAC filtering.  Any ideas?
Thanks,
 Vincent

Well logon to router’s setup page go to “Access Restrictions” >> select policy no. and create a policy to allow connection >> click on “edit list of PCs” and specify MAC address no of certain pc’s which you want to allow internet connection and save settings…

  • Linksys WRT54G LAN Security?

Hi guys, just want to drop some questions around here, hope to have some great responses! Just recently, I've configured Linksys WRT54G as a wireless access point and it's working fine, as well as i enable WEP and MAC filtering security. Now, I've also connected some user through LAN which i doubt to have no security and can easily connect to the internet without MAC filtering or any security authentication. How will i configure this router to filter/restrict the LAN users to access internet? Is it possible? I would appreciate any help from this concern. Thanks, Mike

The WRT54G is designed for home or small office use.  Because of this, the wired LAN ports on the router are protected only by "physical security", that is, they are protected because you only allow "trusted" people to come into your home.
Anyone who plugs their computer into a LAN port, will be able to access your network.
If you know the MAC address of a computer, you can use "Access Restrictions" in the router, to deny them access to the Internet.  But they will still have access to your LAN.

  • WRT54GS Wired/Wireless Crash: Unintentional Hard Reset

    Okay here's my issue:
I have four computers  that connect via wireless through this device.  Including my xbox360
I have another computer that connects  through the wired connection.
Everything works fine when security is down.
Not liking weps and how easy it is to crack and not wishing to expose my shared folders containing naked pictures of myself to an unsecured network I've decided to have WPA2 as my security key. Anyways setting everything up was a piece of cake, Until.....
    My wired connection dropped.
When I started getting into mac address and setting rules about how I wanted my network set up, and WPA security the router just doesn't like the wired connection.
I checked all the ip's and they are connected to the router with different ip's so that is good.  And everything is obtaining automatically. Well i set it to automatic and even manually set it. The wireless works fine.
However on the wired connection locks the router up some of the lights turn off and the router turns back on.
This is obviously a firm ware issue?
Hitting the reset with no security on, I have no problems.
     Aside from no security.

Just an update turned out half the problem was my mistake the other half the problem was linksys
i filled out all feilds in access restriction - edit list of pcs
The stupid grey bars i did not realized symbolized an OR statement meaning that
fill the top section or middle section or the bottom section but don't fill it all out.
When I realized that you only fill one section out and click save everything started working.
    DUH!
Well I am not 100% at fault on that one linksys should have made it maybe a little user friendly seeing this ip stuff is pretty much plug and play.

  • WRT54G wired connection very slow

I just installed my first wireless router last night (the WRT54G), and I got the wireless portion up and running, which is a success to me.  But I immediately noticed that my wired desktop connection to the internet is now much slower than before.  I've tried doing some of the suggestions I've read about on you forums, such as adjusting the MTU, using TCP optimizer, etc, and nothing seems to have helped.  I did an internet speed test and my upload speed is well over twice what my download speed is...seems like my settings are right in the upload direction, just not so much in the download direction *shrugs.*  I did read on one post to try turning the range boost off, I logged into the router but can't figure out how to toggle the range boost on or off.
I'm sure this must be a somewhat common/frequent problem, it just seems that when I searched, most of the speed complaints had to do with the wireless connection rather than the wired one.  Any help on this would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Connect the computer, by wire, directly to your modem.  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.  Post the results.

    Hi,
Does it happens only on 1 wired computer?
Try to wire some other computer and test it's download speed, and verify if it is issue with router and computer
And then resolution can be thought of.
I only have the one wired computer to test with, I haven't really tested the wireless speed yet; thought I'd tackle the wired problem before going for the wireless (if it's a problem)

  • WRT54GS WEP Security Issues

I have used a WRT54GS for a few years with MAC filtering but no other security.  A few months ago, I decided to add WEP security.  While using WEP security, my wireless connection would go from an excellent signal to dropping randomly.  Additionally, internet browsing would be very slow at times to the point of being unusable.  When I disabled WEP, these issues went away.  What should I look at to troubleshoot this issue?
    Thanks.

  • WRT54GS Wireless security two routers (WDS)

    2 WRT54GS
    Wireless connection between routers.
No1 SSID test (connected to ADSL modem) disabled security
    No2 SSID test1 disabled security
After some hard work I was able to make a wireless connection (50m/150ft) between two WRT54GS routers. But when I enabled security (WPA-TKIP) on the router (test1) that is't connected to the ADSL modem, it could't connect to intenet anymore, only to the secured router (test1).
I would be very happy for some tips how to enable wireless security on both routers.

  • WRT54G wired connection failure

My WRT54G v2.2 (FW 4.20.6) will no longer work with a wired connection - neither from my cable modem to the router nor from the router to my PC. More specifically:
If I connect my cable modem directly to my PC, I get a connection to the internet via my broadband provider (which is how I'm creating this message). If I connect the cable modem to the router, I cannot connect to the internet. I get a good wireless signal and can connect into the router (192.168.1.1), but no outside access. However, if I disable wireless on my PC and connect directly via wire to the router, I cannot even access the the router. In the latter case, my PC does report that the "local area connection is now connected", and the correct LED displays on the front panel of the router, but the connection doesn't work.
I've tested both of my cables that connect directly PC --> modem and they're both good. I've reset the router to factory default. Now I don't know what to do, except maybe replace the router. I'd like to hear of a cheaper solution.

You can check this on how to configure WRT54G wireless router. Also make sure you get the corrct IP, netmask, gateway and DNS on the computer after connecting to wireless network (can check this with ipconfig /all command in command prompt).
    Good luck..

  • WRT54G v8 Security Slowdown

Hi guys, I just replaced my WRT54G v6 by a WRT54G v8 because the last one kept dropping connections all the time. WRT54G v8 works fine with my wired computers and my laptop until I put WPA or WEP up, then I can't connect from my laptop anymore or I get a very, very slow connection at best. I've upgraded the firmware and no luck. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Problem fixed by using a AES over TKIP key. Don't ask me why. lol

  • Limited Connectivity with WRE54G to a WRT54G with security disabled.

Hello, I have a WRT54G Router and the signal barely reached my room, so I got the WRE54G, however when I plug in and auto configure the WRE54G I get Limited Connectivity. I am computer savvy and know that my router's wireless security is disabled. I'm using an HP running Vista. I've already held in the reset button and powered down the WRE and then auto configured but the problem persists.

(xp pro) same problem but i noticed as signal strength increases, the connectivity went away. unplug expander and connectivity comes back and of couse signal goes low.

  • Xbox 360 will not connect to WRT54G Wired connection

OK I just bought a xbox 360 and the Linksys wrt54g router I updated the firmware on the router and have 2 pcs currently connected and working great i also have a wii connected wirelessly and it works great.
I connected the xbox 360 to the router and it doesnt even detect that its connected. Ive tested the cables tried 4 different ones and nothing i unhooked the router and just ran the xbox 360 to the cable modem and it worked fine so i know its not the xbox or the cables its the router thats giving me probs. i called linksys was on the line with them for 2 hours and they couldnt tell me nothing. Ive read that ppl have this router and there xboxs work fine
on microsofts site this router is listed as compatible. im lossing my patience and getting very mad about this.
no lights come on the router and the xboxs say the cable is not connected when running to the router but when connected direct to the cable modem works fine.
can someone please help or shed some light on this i would be greatful
    thank

I amp having the same problem. I tried what you had said about using the xbox settings but no luck. I found a link that told me to open these ports:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/firewall.mspx#EMG
It says Inbound and outbound, but I have no idea what that means.  I basically went to Port Range Forwading (I have the BEFSX41 wired router by the way.). It would only allow me to put in 10 .  Also there is no incoming and outgoing!!?? So if there was just 1 number for the port I put that number in both Start and end, and if it had 2 number I put the 1st one as start and the second one as end.
Can anyone help me. This is redamndiculous that a person has to go through this much trouble to hook up an xbox 360.
Also I have a SD216 switch. I don't know if that matters at all.

  • WRT54G Wireless security setup

I'm having some trouble setting up wireless for this router.  I set up WEP and entered a passphrase.  When i try to connet to the network it asks for the passphrase. When i enter the phrase it says the network security key is not valid.  Any ideas on how to fix this.  Tx in advance

With WEP, you must enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router)  into your computer, not the WEP password or passphrase.

  • Xbox and wrt54g wired

Can connect my xbox live to wrt54g router...works great! When you connect to xbox live though...my PC's internet connection doesn't work ?
Newest firmware on a WRT54g ver 2. Can anyone help with settings for the router to make both connections work at the same time?
    BJF.Dragon

Please check and make sure that the iP addresses they are getting are DHCP. Coz there are times wherein if the router's firmware is corrupted, it wont act as a DHCP and would just serve as a passthrough and the devices connected into the router will get public the public iP address from the modem. That is why only one device will work. If you're having that problem, reset the router, reconfigure it and make sure the pc and XBOX are getting DHCP iP addresses. But if they are already having DHCP iP addresses, assign a static iP on the XBOX- it could be caused by an iP conflict.
    Thanks and Good Luck,

  • Model WRT54GS Wired Connection

Model WRT54GS but i have my xbox 360 connected to it by a ethernet cable. i also set the port range and set a IP manually to the 360. I'm still getting strict Nat. Also, i have DSL Internet and i set the port range and firewall to the 360 IP on the DSL Modem. Wen I made the port range settings it was saying open Nat,A Day later it goes back to strict. i rechecked the port range settings and they are still set. I also have a PS3 connected wireless to the router, i set the port range for it as well. I've had no problems with the ps3 only the 360. Made sure IP are different. Help?

Ya i forgot to mention I put the DMZ to the PS3 and it makes it Type 2 NAT but wen i take it off the PS3 it goes to Type 3(type 2-router connection open NAT Type 3-Router Connection Strict NAT). But when i put it to the 360 it still says Strict NAT. I have the IP addresses= PS3(192.168.1.15) 360(192.168.1.115). After reading your post I updated the Firmware but has not fixed problem yet

  • Wired Security

I have an ABS Extreme between my LAN and the DSL modem. Initially all my 4 Macs and 2 Windows machines (XP and 98) were LAN'd wirelessly, but tech problems (and concerns about my medical data) caused me to connect the XP machine and Cube by wires. I use DHCP and NAT for a distributed range of IP's behind the ABS. I also assign specific IP's to each CPU behind the ABS. I also key'd into the ABS Admin Utility the MAC addresses of the built-in NIC cards in the CPU's as well as the addresses of each wireless card. I'd like to use encryption but have no time to go back and forth to get the Win 98 machine to work, so encryption is off. As for my Win XP machine, I just turned off the Symantec and built-in Win XP firewall because Filemaker Pro could not "see" my Filemaker Server. XP w/o a firewall makes me nervous. So my question is ...
    Is my little network secure?

It is secure against amateur hackers. However, it doesn't take a lot of knowledge or time to defeat the only wireless security currently implemented on your wireless network (ie MAC address Access Control).
