  • WRT54G router with cable internet problems

    I have a WRT54G wireless router and comcast internet.  The internet works as long as the modem is plugged directly into the computer, but whenever I connect everything through the router I lose the internet.  I'm pretty sure that the router isn't broken or anything because up until a few days ago it was working fine with verizon DSL.  I didn't encounter any problems until the cable modem.  I've tried as many solutions as I could find within the support area and nothing seems to work.  Please help!  Thanks in advance.

    Try this connection first:
    Connect Modem to the back of router using Ethernet cable at the internet port of router.
    Connect another cable from either 1-4 ports from back of router to back of your computer.
    Open routers set up page using http://192.168.1.1 …you will see username & password …leave username blank & in password use admin.
    Under set up look for “mac address clone” sub tab …. Enable it & click “clone my pcs mac”…click save settings.
    Do power cycle & check whether it’s working or not.

  • Wireless Router WRT160N wired to desktop, I loose internet when wireless laptop is off.

    I have the wrt160n v2 wireless router, it does not work for me.
    If my XP wireless laptop is only powered ON the Vista desktop internet wired will work, I am not wired or wireless using the laptop, not in internet, only powered on.
    If the laptop is off I have no internet on the desktop, still plugged thru the router.
    The laptop is used and I was unsure if the built in wireless was new enough so I bought a card to go in it for wireless.
    When everything is on all is well for playing on the internet times two computers, but if you turn off the laptop I have to plug the internet directly into the desktop to continue in the internet.
    I started to work with tech support yesterday and they are hard to understand. I did bring in the newest firmware and still have the problems.
    Can anybody help me, I really don't have the time to be on the phone for hours figuring this all out.
    Thanks

    And I wish everyone that was having this problem with 160Nv2 firmware could get some kind of compensation from Linksys, but again, unfortunately, I have no control over that, not being a Linksys employee...I had a Cisco CCNA once, but it expired.....and that is as close as I will ever probably come....

  • WRT54G ver 8.2 wireless problems

    I have a WRT54G, only about 5-6 months old. (my previous linksys lasted about a year before it died as well) -- It was working fine up until about 5 months ago (no settings changed 5 months ago). Wired works fine. I have 2 laptops, they are not connected at the same time. I've tried both laptops with the same effect. About a month ago, the wireless started getting real slow, then it would start disconnecting and reconnecting. Upgraded the firmware, tried rolling back the laptop wireless driver, tried upgrading the laptop wireless driver, rebooting the WRT54G, powering off the WRT54G, etc. There's nothing sitting on top of it, it's in open air, and i've tried placing the WRT about 3 feet from my laptop. I connect via wireless at 54MB/S, and about 10 seconds later the connection freezes and it drops down to 24, 11, then 1MB/Sec  then drops. I'm broadcasting SSID, the only preferred network is mine (I can't see any other networks from my location), and I've compared all of the settings between my laptop and the WRT. Like I said, was working fine for 5 months.
    Really getting tired of replacing my Linksys avery 6 months to a year, hoping there's something that I'm missing.

    On your Router i think you need to make certain changes on your Router under the Wireless part, Once you make the changes on your Router i think that should solve your problem.
    Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...

    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
    Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
    Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
    Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
    NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
    Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
    Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • WRT54GX2 Internet Problems

    I have 3 computers on a network, 2 wireless (laptops) and one wired (a desktop running vista).  This is a home network solely set up so that all three computer can use my cable internet connection.  I ran this network using a WRT54G for just over a year, however it resently died on me.  I replaced it with a WRT54GX2.
    I set up the router with a cable modem hooked up to it as well as my desktop PC.  All three computers can establish an excelent connection to the router, however problems arise when it comes to the internet connection.  The computers can connect to the internet and browse the web, however the connection (to the internet, not the router) cuts out every 4-5 seconds for about 4-5 seconds.  If I attempt to download a file, or use alot of bandwidth (ie: bandwidth speed test), the connection dies until i close my browser or internet application.
    I have tried the following:
    -Reboot the router
    -Re-flash the current firmware
    -Reboot modem, router, and PC (about 20 times)
    -Disable wireless (and see if it works via wired PC)
    -Disable router firewall.
    -Forward port 80
    All to no avail.
    This internet connection is very important and need help as soon as possible; I'm open to trying anything.  Any advise?

    Never turn off the router's firewall.  This opens the router, and your entire network, to attack from the Internet.
    Your router should work when it is set to factory defaults.  Please use the following procedure to do this:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
    If you get this far without problems, shut down your entire system.  Wire the ethernet port on your cable modem to the "Internet" port on the router.  Power up your cable modem and allow it to fully boot (1-5 minutes).  Power up your router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).  Power up your computer.  Now try to connect to the Internet.  If you have trouble, temporarily turn off your computer's software firewall, and see if that helps.
    If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
    If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
    If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
    Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • My WRT54G v5 router loses internet connection frequently

    My WRT54G v5 router loses internet connection frequently. Sometimes occurs when you enter a web or sometimes every few minutes, but without a pattern. I have W XP Pro with SP3 and I have a pc wired to the router and sometimes 2 notebook with Wi-Fi. What could be the problem?. Thank you very much.

    I have upgraded the firmware to v 1.02.8 and reduced the MTU to 1350 but after a few minutes of doing that I had the same problem... The router reboots itself, again and again and again...
    It's possible to run some diagnostic utility that somebody can check ??
    It's possible it would be a router failure ??
    I note that sometimes is ok and when Entering some web pages the router reboots itself and I loose my internet connection, but others, the router reboots for no apparent reason...

  • Weird internet problem / ssl connection error, site loads in safari not in firefox or other way around

    I really can't figure out this problem. Search the internet tried all kinds of things, nothing help so far.
    I have a Macbook Pro (Lion originally installed) running on Mavericks (all latest updates). SSD installed and the DVD tray is replaced by the original HDD.
    The laptop wasn't running very smooth anymore so decided to give it a fresh Mavericks install (even though I know it's not really necessary for mac, it helped, everything is much faster except a weird internet problem came up).
    After freshly installing Mavericks I couldn't get into my google account anymore, just wouldn't load. Tried Safari (use this normally) and Firefox and Chrome, this last was gave a SSL connection error, both Safari and FF said the website couldn't be loaded because the server didn't respond. For Gmail I use Mailplane which is just stuck on a white page. I tried repairing the keychain, repaired disk and disk permissions, cleaned browsers, turned off firewall and antivirus (Shopos) started in safe mode, checked time settings which were all good. Nothing of this helped. I even ended up creating a usb bootdisk for Mavericks, formatted the disk and reinstalled from the start just Mavericks and nothing else, started Safari, still the same problem. As even this didn't help I figured it's not worth reinstalling all software so put back my backup.
    Now I ended up somehow only being able to use Gmail normally in Firefox, Chrome still gives SSL error and Safari can load the inbox, but I can't open any messages. I get the error there is a problem with the connection. If I try in Basic HTML mode it surprisingly does work.
    You would say, just use Firefox, finished...but the thing is that sometimes random websites won't load in Firefox, when I load the same site in Safari it works perfectly.
    O yes, I also tried the connect to my iPhone and use the Cellular data network, then it's no problem using Gmail in Safari normally. You would say it's a router problem, but I have another Macbook Pro (just one model later running Mountain Lion) this one works perfectly with every browser. Also my iPhone does everyting logged into the WiFi network.
    You can understand I really have no clue what's going on here, I don't see any logic. I can only think of a hardware problem in my Macbook, but don't see how that could cause these problems.
    I hope someone is ably to help me ?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Very Strange Internet Problems

    I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
    As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
    This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
    I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.

    I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

  • WRT54G wireless router drops internet?

    I'm using my WRT54G with Starband satellite internet.  It seems that every once in awhile or...sometimes way too often, the internet decides to stop working all together!  I've checked this with two other computers on the wireless network.  They all seem to share the shutdown.  I also have a TIVO dvr that requires either a land line or ethernet connection for updating data.  I don't have a land line so I'm using my wireless connection.  (Used to use it with absolutely no problems before I moved.  At that time I had Quest DSL.)  Anyway, I seem to make a connection with Tivo but it gets disconnected after about 20 seconds so it never finishes a download.  Any suggestions out there?  I have updated firmware.

    i'm having the same exact problem, restarting the router works though, but it is a pain

  • All Kinds Of Internet Problems - PLEASE HELP!

    So I've been having all kinds of internet problems in my house. I'm almost positive part of it is router related but I just (somewhat scientifically) proved it's also related to my mini. I used speedtest.net to test both my brand new mac mini and my 2006 macbook pro running Leopard 10.5.1 (fresh install). Here's the specs and speed test results:
    _*2006 Macbook Pro*_
    Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM
    OSX 10.5.1
    *Average Results:*
    Download - 4.72 Mb/s
    Upload - 0.84 Mb/s
    Ping - 24-38ms (range)
    _*2009 Mac Mini*_
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.2
    Results:
    Download - 0.78Mb/s
    Upload - 0.97Mb/s
    Ping - 15ms
    *AFTER PRAM RESET:*
    DL - 2.85Mb/s
    UL - 0.98 Mb/s
    Ping 22ms
    *these were the BEST results and far above the average I got
    Router:
    Netgear WGR614v9 running latest firmware
    WEP 128bit security B/G combined broadcast
    We were running WPA2 security but when I switched to WEP everyone in the house noticed a speed increase.
    The tests were run within a span of 10 minutes and both computers were about 2 feet away from each other.
    Can someone please explain to me why my nearly 4 year old MBP with an outdated OSX is spanking my brand new mini?

    I apologize ahead of time as I am not sure I can answer your question, but I would like to ask you a question if I could...
    Are you using your mini with Ethernet cable or Wireless. Not that there's a real difference in your case but sometimes if you're running with a Wired Ethernet cable on a unit that also has wireless, it helps to turn off the wireless.
    And on the other hand if you are not running with Ethernet cable on the mini, you might think about trying that.

  • Internet problems on my macbook pro and ipod touch with camera.

    Hi,
    For the last week or so I have been experiencing internet problems with my macbook and iPod touch with camera. I'll be online and clicking different news articles and suddenly the address bar will start to open a link but will not complete it. So what I do is go up to the signal bar and click turn off airport then turn it back on and that will temporarily solve the problem. Same solution on my iPod, I turn off the wifi and turn it back on. It is very frustrating for both devices. I will include as much info as possible. I have a NetGear RangeMax wireless router model WPN824v3. I was wondering if changing the wireless settings on that would solve my problem. I have the channel on 9. Mode on b and g. Security option on WPA-PSK [TKIP] with password. I would be happy for any help with this issue. Also I hope I'm following correct posting protocol. I haven't been on this forum in a while.

    Sig,
    Thanks for the advice. I finally tried a solution after doing nothing. LoL. What I did do was change the channel the router was on from 9 to 7. I think I've done something like this in the past when I had slow internet and that worked out well too. I thought that would help and so far so good. Not an interruption so far but we shall see. To the guy or girl who expressed that they had the same problem as me I would try changing the channel of your router like I did. I will monitor the situation and see if it totally solved my problem or not and keep this thread updated. Thanks people

  • Desktop.open() Problem

    I recently put together an application that relied heavily on the Desktop.open( ) method and several other methods from the Desktop class. However, all of a sudden the Desktop.open() does not work. I believe I read some where that this was due to the ShellExecute function or dll or something like that.
    However, since my app is targetted at the Windows platform I resorted to using windows Explorer to launch the system default applications for files using a the code below
    public static void openFile(File file) {
      try {
        Runtime runtime = Runtime.getRuntime();
        runtime.exec( "explorer.exe \"" + file.getAbsolutePath() + "\"" );
      } catch(IOException) {
        ioe.printStackTrace();
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Could Not Open File Location: " + file.getAbsolutePath());
    }The code works as expected, but my problem is that I am loosing cross-platform functionality.
    Can any point my to solution to this Desktop.open( ) problem, or probably add the my list platform dependent launch procedures so at least the code works on Windows,Linux and Mac.

    Thanks Andrew,
    I've do a more simple example of the problem. I create two files on "\\fiuu\proyectosShared", one called "test.txt" and the other one called "te st.txt". I execute your exact source for the who paths whith these results:

  • Internet Problems - poor connectivity

    I have a Lenovo X100e laptop with Windows 7 Professional. It's been a great computer, but when I go on the internet, it behaves as if the connection is slow or wonky, even if the connection is fast. This is especially true of video streaming, which stutters so much, it's virtually impossible to watch Netflix or YouTube or any other video streaming service. This is otherwise a great computer so I really want to fix this, rather than buy another computer.
    I have used this laptop on my home network with both wifi and direct connection with the same behavior. I have diagnosed my network speed and its good, usually around 20Mps, plus I've tried this laptop in public places like Whole Foods and it behaves the same: wonky connection. I have an old Dell Latitude that works and it runs the internet great on the same network, and I've used my phone on my home wifi and it works great, so it's clearly the Lenovo.
    The network adapters are 11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II and Realtek PVIe GBE Family Controller. I checked the drivers for both (using Device Manager), and they are both current. I used the "diagnose problems" function and found nothing. I googled for problems with them and didn't find much.
    There is also a Qualcom Gobi 2000 listed (Wireless WAN Driver for Windows 7) under Other Devices and it says "There is no driver selected for the device information set or element." I tried updating the driver, but got an error saying "Windows could not find driver software for your device." I have no clue if this is relevant.
    Also, the laptop plays video with no issues if it's a file on the local drive, like mp4, so I don't think video is the problem per se. It's the general communication with a network. Let me repeat that I don't think this is a wifi issue because I get the same behavior even if I plug a network cable in directly to my router.
    Also, I have tried multiple updated browsers including Chrome, Firefox, and IE. Plus, I have run multiple virus scans and nothing is found.
    I rviewed the other internet problem posts on this forum, but they don't seem to be the same problem I am having. I can get on the internet, it's just wonky. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regarding Gobi 2000:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001302 - drivers;
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003751 - boot code utility driver needs.
    Install them yourself. Four devices should appear in Device Manager.
    Further steps depend of the network carrier you work with. If the carrier is Verizon or AT&T you should install and launch Mobile Broadband Activation softwate:

    If you work with another carrier there is a chance you'll need additional help. Let us know.
