WRT54G --- Wireless Network disapears, computers wont connect to rouer wirelessly

I am having big time issue with my WRT54G Ver. 8.2.
It's practically brand new (5 days) and I haven't been able to get it to work stably yet.  The very first day I was able to get it going for almost a full day, but the next day, when I came home from work, my wireless desktop was not connected.
The issue here is that there stopped being a wireless network at all. I don't know if the SSID just stopped broadcasting, or if it got hidden.  I tested to find it with my regular desktop which has a usb adaptor, a laptop with a built in adaptor, and my smart phone, and none of the three were able to see the router.
I tinkered around with it (changed security settings, channels, reset a couple of times) and got uneven results.  Eventually, after a couple of days, I was able to get it to work with no security set up, but then I changed security settings back to WEP, and it disapeared again.  I went and downloaded the newest firmware 8.2.05 and I'm still not getting anywhere.  I just did a long reset, and I am seeing the wireless network again, (I set it with no security) but my wireless pc's cant get an IP (they fall back to the 169.xxx. address)
I am basically pretty much stumped and have no idea what to do... Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I would like to know if I can solve this fast, otherwise, I'll just take it back to the store. Thanks.
BTW.. I am on a wired desktop now, with XP ( I do all the setup work from here) my wireless PC's (one desktop and one laptop) are both vista.

Hey try resetting the router reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Based upon your Internet Service Provider try setting up the router & also do the wireless & advanced wireless settings & setup the secured network & you should be able to go Online Wirelessly.Likewise, setup all the pc's & you should be able to go online without any issue.

i reinstalled my OS on the laptop [windows xp]
btw all was woking fine prior to the OS reinstall
the internal wireless sees the networks, but it wont connect.
running diagnostics all passes up to the association tests, that fails.
Dell run thru a series of downloads, etc trying to find the problem, but no luck.
i casn use dell pay service to try to solve the problem, but thats my last resort, because i dont know if it a software, apple, or cable issue.
    any suggestions?

Hello NYGramps. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I assume that your Dell laptop can access the Internet when connected directly to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet ... correct?
If so, can the laptop "see" and access other wireless network and just not the one provided by your AEBSn?

  • WRT54GS WIreless not connected, yet connected

My WRT54GS wireless connections wont go through, as it clearly says, Not Connected, yet my network connections will show that I am connected to the internet and indeed, I can browse the web. My biggest problem with this is that eventually (around 10 minutes or so) it will disconnect from the internet, which is a problem since i play online games. Anyone ever had this happen?

under the network connections , what all connections do you see....ensure that any other connection except for the wireless network connection is disabled..
the only medium of connection should be the wireless network connection... check this and let me know if more help need on this issue ...

  • WRT54GS-Wireless devices either won't connect or disconnect when a game is launched

My old router went out last night, and I had a wrt54gs that was given to me a while back, so I hooked it up, but I am having some issues with it.
For a while it would say that it had no internet access, when it was connected. Then I couldn't get my wireless devices to connect (xbox, and cell phone) All I had done was change the name and the encryption to WEP.
I was able to get them online when I switched to WPA2 for a while. Then I decided to play a game (Tried Diablo 3 and Path of Exile)  Every time I loaded up the game, the devices would get kicked off. WHen I disconnected from the game, they would reconnect to the network. Until 1 time they didn't. Now my Xbox wont connect at all, and my phone keeps saying the network is not in range, when placed a foot from the router. I've tried disabling UPnP, but that doesn't do anything. I've turned MAC filtering, on and off. I've powercycled, and just get no good results.
I'm not sure if this is just a bad router, or whats, going on. (FYI my old router was a 10 yr old D-link that I never had problems with)

  • How do I set up WRT54G router with 4 computers and WVC54GC Wireless Camera

Can anyone please tell me how to set up my Home Network with full security turned on?
I have at least 4 neighbors that show up on my wireless connections list. I have a daughter that loves music and is constantly downloading viruses but only on one wireless connection. The rest of us want to be protected from that computer. My system consists of the following:
    One Linksys WRT54G Router
Two Linksys WMP54G Wireless PCI adapters,
Two Linksys WVC54GC Wireless Cameras  (Possibility four if the 1st two ever work OK.)
Two Linksys LNE100TX PCI Ethernet Cards,
    One HP Ethernet Printer
Three computers were connected by Ethernet cable and one was wireless. I did not change the admin password and I thought everything was working fine for a couple of years until I found that the wireless computer was acting as a “drone” and slowing everything down to a snails pace.  It could even turn itself on.
I changed one of the Ethernet computers to wireless and decided that it might be time to also change the password and increase security.  Setting up security completely shutdown the wireless drone computer. I was OK with that, at least until I can reformat that harddrive.
I then decided while I was at it, I would add a wireless camera (WVC54GC). I set it up using the software and Ethernet cable that came with it. After 6 tries I finally got the camera to work with the cable attached, but it does not work wireless and now none of the other computers connect any more. Is there a limit on how many connections? Should I reset the router and if so, do I disconnect the DSL modem? I’m afraid of the “drone” computer because I found some very bad malware on it. One in particular caused me to replace a hard drive.
I’ve read page after page of network stuff on the Internet and I guess I just don’t know how to ask the right questions. I’m tired of fooling with this.

hi , when u talk about security , are u referring to the "viruses" your daughters PC may be propogating to the rest of the network , or are u referring to external attacks on the router or your wireless PC"s ???
In case u are referring to the "virus" attacks , the best you can do is install a good antivirus software on all PC"s and keep the virus definations updated....
In case u are referring to the wireless security , i'd suggest that your use WPA2 personal. you can select WPA2 by going to the "wireless security" option.
let me know if u need anything more.

  • Wireless network disapears

    I'm running a WRT150N.
About once a day or every other day my wireless network disapears.
The network just disapears from the available wireless network list.
The wired PC doesn't have any problem and doesn't appear to ever loose connection.
The only way to get it working is to unplug the power from the router and plug it back in.
Is there a more "permanant" solution?
    Thanks for any help!

    IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
    5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...
    6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...

  • My ipod touch (4th) suddenly wont connect to my wifi. Other gadgets are connected though. I tried resetting the network and turning the wifi (and ipod) on and off but it still wont work. Any suggestions on what to do?

My ipod touch (4th) suddenly wont connect to my wifi. It connected fine before and all of my other electronics (tablets, computers, laptops, gaming systems, etc.) are connected and working completely fine. I tried turning the wifi setting on my ipod on/off as well as the actual ipod itself. I also tried resetting the network settings but neither of these options worked. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless Networking with LINKSYS WRT54GS wireless router

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless printer conneted via WiFi to my LYNKSYS WRT54GS wireless router.  I do not have a USB cable or ethernet cable plugged to the printer.  I am able to use the 'scan to email button' and the 'scan to network folder' button on the front of the printer and I can pint from the PC to the printer with no problems.
I installed the HP printer software from the CD, choosing network/wireless connection, without having to install any USB cables from the PC to the printer in the process.  many posts in the forum mention having to connect USB cables in the wireless installation process.
Can I install the software in the same fashion on the other two laptops? Or, do I need to do something differently?

The USB cable is used on those printers which do not have display or front panel wireless setup is not possible. We configure the wireless settings during install and save those settings in printer's memory by transferring through USB cable. Therefore the USB is plugged in during wireless installation temporarily. In your case I don't think plugging in USB cable is necessary as the printer is already on network and had IP address. Connect the laptops on wireless network and proceed with regular install, the printer should be detected automatically.

  • Problem with wired computers on a WRT54G wireless router

I have a WRT54G wireless router that has been working flawlessly up until now.  On Sunday, my son informed me that his computer, which is wired wasn't connecting to the internet.  Upon further investigating, we found out that our wired computer in our gameroom wasn't connected either.  However, our main pc, which is also wired, was connecting just fine.  I checked my laptop and several other wireless devices and they were online as well.
Here's the weird thing.  In my gameroom, I have just one cable coming into the room from the router.  That cable connects to a 5 port switch which then connects to my gameroom pc, Xbox 360, and Playstation 2.  I checked my Xbox 360 and it connected to Xbox Live as soon as I turned it on so that told me that I had connectivity coming from the router and the switch.  But why was the pc not connecting?
Anyway, I restarted the router, but that didn't fix the issue.  I then restarted my cable modem, a Motorola Surfboard, and the router and the issue was resolved.  All my pcs were connecting again.
Everything was fine until yesterday when the exact same issue occurred.  This time the modem and router restarts did not fix the problem.  Again, I have connectivity coming from the router to the 5 port switch because my wired Xbox 360 connects just fine, but my wired pc does not.  My son's wired computer is not connecting, but my main pc is.  I cannot figure out how to resolve this issue.

Might be possible that the router need reconfiguration ... So reset the router...for few seconds ... after reset ... Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as “admin "" all in lower cases and then click on ok. On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button. Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"". - Click on enable - Click on clone your PC's MAC button and then click on the Save Settings button. Power cycle the network again & see if it works ...

  • Imac find wireless but wont connect!

As the subject states...i recently purchased an imac G5 from a friend, he wanted rid and i got it for dirt cheap; so figured id make most of a bargain!
Anyway while setting up the computer and ridding it of all his rubbish etc i tried connecting to my household wireless network, the computer found the network but wouldn't connect to it and gave me the following message
"There was an error joining the AirPort network "MadHouse""
I know that the wireless network works fine as i can connect my Nokia N8, Blackberry Curve, Nokia N900, Ipod Touch, MacBook, and another 5 windows based laptops succesfully!!
Any suggestions as to why it wont?

try reinstalling the OS on the mac. if that's not possible try connecting the mac to your router by using an Ethernet cable. if you are able to get it to connect to the internet try to update it.
if it still dosent work then, as the last resort, you will have to reinstall the IMAC G5's operating system. do not install the one that supports intel or it will not work on your imac g5.

  • WRT54G wireless router irregularly drops connection

I've had a WRT54G wireless for about 3.5 years now, with a Motorolla SB4200 cable modem connected to it to provide internet service. The router itself is connected to a desktop PC and there are two laptops that are connected to it wirelessly, one of the laptops is old and has a Linksys PCMCIA wireless card and the other laptop has wireless built in to it.
I updated to the latest firmware for the router.
For more than a year now, the wireless connection has been irregularly dropping. Sometimes it will reconnect instantly, sometimes it will take a few minutes to reconnect, sometimes it will take up to 10 minutes. More importantly, the connection drops very irregularly. Sometimes it will work for weeks flawlessly and sometimes it will constantly drop several days in a row.
Today I haven't had any problems so far, but yesterday and the day before, it was dropping a lot. What I've noticed is it mostly happens in the evening, so I'm assuming maybe there is some kind of interference.
I have been told that wireless routers do have a limited lifespan and that mine probably is just wearing out and needs to be replaced, so I picked up a new WRT54G router for $50 yesterday, however, I haven't opened it yet.
Is it likely that my router is just wearing out and needs to be replaced, or is there some kind of interference going on? I am able to pick up a number of different wireless signals from the neighbors, but they are always there. Even right now as I am connected to the network typing up this message.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help wehowardjr.
I haven't actually pressed the reset button in a while, but I did unplug it for about 20 seconds then replug it just two days ago.
What is the nvram and exactly how do I clear it? I don't think I've ever doe that.
I use a laptop that has the wireless built in and I'm the one who uses the computer the most in the house, so I am the one who is noticing the connection dropping the most, so I'm not really sure if it is the problem with the laptop witht he PCMCIA card.
I'm surprised version 6 has problems. I would have assumed that it would be a great improvement over previous models, especially 1.0. I guess I should return it to the store then? Isn't there version 7 out now?

  • BEFW11s4 on WRT54G wireless network

Can I add a Befw11s4 to a remote location with the same settings I have on a WRT54g with a different IP address and use the IP address of the WRT54G as the gateway on the computers in the remote location?

It sounds like what you want to do is have all your computers (on both routers) be able to share the Internet and all printers, and perhaps also share files  --  is this correct?
Or do you want to block the computers on the WRT54G from being able to access anything on the BEFW11S4, but still be able to access the Internet from all computers?
Also, do you want to be able to walk around, and have the computer connect to the stronger signal (that is, to either router)?   Or do you want to tie the WRT54G wireless computers just to the WRT54G, and the BEFW11S4 wireless computers just to the BEFW11S4?

  • Laptop with Windows 7 wont connect wirelessly.

Hi. I just got a new toshiba laptop and upgraded to windows 7. But now I can not connect to my WRT54G wirelessly. It works fine if you use an ethernet cord. Does anybody know how to solve this?  Any help would be great.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Check your wireless security settings in the router and make sure they are the same for your laptop settings.
Disable IPv6 on the Win 7 computer under LAN properties for all adapters both wired and wireless.  Disable UPnP in the router.  Reboot computers and try again.
