WRT54g2 and comcast modem, internet dropouts, losing my mind.

Title of the post sums it up. I've literally spent hours and hours on the phone with linksys tech support. I've replaced the modem once and the problem is identical.
Basically, I get everything setup and it works fine for a period of time, usually a few days. Then, internet gets really slow before it stops working altogether.
When I lose internet connection however my home network is still functioning. My computers still talk to each other and I can usually still stream content to my PS3. Even my utorrent downloads will continue seeding and downloading.
When it internet stops working I power cycle the router and it works again. But every time I do that the period of time that it functions properly gets shorter and shorter, to the point where I will power cycle it and within 5 minutes I lose internet.
Firmware is up to date, 1.5.01. Wireless network is secured. I do not experience any dropouts when the either computer is wired directly to the modem.
I have a W7 laptop on wireless, wired W7 desktop, and a wireless PS3 on the network. And recently I began sharing my wireless with my neighbor. But I've had issues long before that.
After some research, I came across this thread.
http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/I-need-to-reconfigure-my-WRT54G2-to-work-with-Com...
Basically setting the the router ip to 192.168.2.1 instead of 1.1 and enabling mac address clone.
This actually helped and I thought my internet woes were over. But at the time I was in between desktop PCs (building one to replace my old Dell).
After a couple days of my new desktop on the network my old problems began again. Could utorrent be causing any issue because I notice it seems to get worse when my desktop is downloading, or maybe not it just seems that way.
There have been times where the computer gave an ip address conflict message. I've tried static ip but have not been able to get that to work probably due to something I've been missing in the process. I'd prefer not to have to resort to static ip because I take my laptop to work and for travel and would prefer not to have be going back and forth on my settings. And I would like guests to be able to come over with their laptop and just quickly log on and not have to change their ip.
So I'm at a loss, not sure what else to try. This is also the 2nd brand of modem I tried, the first was a dlink that I just returned right away because I thought it was faulty.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

MTU is the Maximum Transmission Unit. It specifies the largest packet size permitted for Internet transmission. Keep the default setting, Auto, to have the Router select the best MTU for your Internet connection. To specify a MTU size, select Manual, and enter the value desired (default is 1400).  You should leave this value in the 1200 to 1500 range.
The default value is 100. Enter a value between 1 and 65,535 milliseconds. The Beacon Interval value indicates the frequency interval of the beacon. A beacon is a packet broadcast by the Router to synchronize the wireless network.
This value should remain at its default setting of 2347. The range is 0-2347 bytes.
<script type="text/javascript">// Capture(hwireless.phase11) // </script> Should you encounter inconsistent data flow, only minor modifications are recommended. If a network packet is smaller than the preset RTS threshold size, the RTS/CTS mechanism will not be enabled. The Router sends Request to Send (RTS) frames to a particular receiving station and negotiates the sending of a data frame. After receiving an RTS, the wireless station responds with a Clear to Send (CTS) frame to acknowledge the right to begin transmission.
This value should remain at its default setting of 2346. The range is 256-2346 bytes. It specifies the maximum size for a packet before data is fragmented into multiple packets. If you experience a high packet error rate, you may slightly increase the Fragmentation Threshold. Setting the Fragmentation Threshold too low may result in poor network performance. Only minor modifications of this value are recommended.

  • Setting up with Vonage and Comcast modems

I've tried twice to set up my TC to no avail. I know I'm not doing something right but am unsure what it is. I've read the manuals--I'm a bit challenged in these areas.
My current set up is: Comcast modem to Vonage modem; Vonage modem to Airport extreme, and, to a router for our home which is wired. What I've tried:
Comcast to Vonage to TC / router--the computers could not see TC or only saw it temporarily.
Comcast to TC to Vonage / router--No wireless, no internet, and lost Vonage phone service. Plus, I could not get the TC light to stop flashing amber.
I have enjoyed immensely the simplicity of Apple when setting up the wireless network. But I am stumped. What am I overlooking?

Are you referring to Time Capsule as assuming the role of the main router, which is currently a Linksys Etherfast DSL/Cable Router Model BEFSR41? So this router is no longer required?
Here's what I think you are proposing:
    1. Comcast modem to WAN port on Time Capsule (replaces Linksys Etherfast)
    2. Connect Vonage to LAN port on Time Capsule
    3. Connect the second router (10/100 8-Port Workgroup Switch Model EZXS88W) to LAN Port on Time Capsule
    4. Put the second router in bridge mode
The Airport Express would be removed in favor of Time Capsule so not sure what wireless preference is being referred to for the second routeer.

  • Linksys e900 and comcast xfinity internet speed

I just recently purchased comcast internet today and self installation kit that came with the modem and all..... got it all set up no problems activated did speedtest directly from cable modem to laptop computer wired and was getting 10mbps down and 3mbps up well went out and bought a linksys e900 wireless router.... connected it no problems... however my laptop wirelessly and phones connected to the router with speedtest is only getting 300kbps down average!!! but the upload is still 3mbps.... is there something im doing wrong? any help is appreciated!

The above is not an entirely accurate statement.  What I can says is... 'it depends'.  Depends on your brand of router and brand of WiFi adapter.  I now use a Netgear WNDR3400v2 router with a Linksys AE1000 USB adapter on my Toshiba Satellite laptop.  With WMM disabled in the router, I can connect at 300 Mbps and transfer wirelessly to my downstairs computer at a max rate of 82.5Mbps.  Why only 82.5Mbps?  Well the router and computer downstairs only have 100Mbps LAN connections.  With WMM enabled my connection link is still 300Mbps but my speed is reduced, but not by much. Go figure.  Comcast speed is perfect at about 24Mbps with WMM disabled, only 12-14Mbps with WMM enabled.  And yes it is an N connection all the time.
Using the internal WiFi adapter, Intel 5100 b/g/n I can only get a connection of 9-14Mpbs.  That's right only 14Mbps with all the latest drivers installed.  Comcast speed is only about 7Mbps using the internal WlFi adapter.  WMM enabled or disabled, no difference.
So, it depends.  I suggest trying a cheap external USB adapter like the above.  Only $14 on eBay.

  • Airport capsule and Comcast modem

I just bought the airport and time capsule and have it installed and working perfectly.  Now Comcast sent me a new modem to "take advantage of all Xfinity has to offer."  Should I install that modem or not.  Does the Airport have it own modem and router?  That was my understanding.

The apple routers do not have a modem.. you must use a modem.. either supplied by your ISP or purchased by you.. and unfortunately this is almost never successful unless you reset the apple router back to factory settings and start over.
If you want the higher speed you will probably need to install the new modem.. then the fun begins.. is it a pure modem or also a router?? There should be just one router in the network.. but if the supplied modem is also a router it is better to bridge the TC.

  • Trying to setup TC to the internet (Comcast modem) and does not connect.

I'm replacing my old Netgear WiFi router with the TC.  The provider is Comcast via their modem but, after setting up TC it does not connect to the internet.  Of course Comcast service doesn't answer.  I've tried the usual, unplugging the modem and TC and reconnecting, then resetting, etc, no connection to the internet.  Do I need to directly bypass the WiFi router to start and connect the computer first and capture the DNS settings?  Comcast usually does that automatically.  After that connect TC to the modem and then manually edit settings?  What settings use I edit?

Is the comcast modem a pure modem or also a router?
If it is a pure modem.. the TC must be in router mode.
If it has been used in another setup or is just being difficult .. reset the TC to factory and start over.
It is simply in DCHP and NAT for network setup.. it should get an IP and share it by default.
Normally you need to turn off the modem for several minutes to make the ISP gateway give up the MAC address of last connected item.
Tell us the exact model of the modem if the above doesn't work.
    Is the TC new one?

  • Cisco E1000 wont connect to internet anymore - not getting DHCP ip address from Comcast modem

    Very strange issue...
I have Comcast HSI and have been using my Cisco (Linksys) E1000 for about 3 years now. Bought it as a refurb.
My issue is that the E1000 is NOT receiving the DHCP info from my Comast modem.
The internet works when my laptop is directly attached to the modem; but when connecting the modem internet port
to the E1000 internet port it is NOT grabbing my ISP DHCP ip address thus no clients can broswe 'wired or wireless'.
I even updated the firmware and am starting to think its time to get a 'BRAND NEW' router as this makes NO SENSE!
I cannot release/renew as i have NO ip address to release.  I have even tried to configure the E1000 as a static
using the ipconfig/all from when the laptop and modem was connected. Comcast says they see nothing on their end.
I also factory defaulted the router and redid the config to no avail.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Airport express and comcast telephony modem

I just had Comcast setup cable modem/telephony in my new home.
Technician set up and was only able to get the internet to work if plugged directly from modem into network card on the PC notebook.
I replaced that cable with the airport express, got a green light. both the PC and the mac found the wireless connection and I had internet access from both.
About 2 days later I lost my internet connection. Both machines still find the wireless and report strong connection. but no browser connections.
Interestingly enough, the PC wanted to download some MS updates and was able to do that, but still no connection via IE, Safari, Firefox.
Talked with several techs from Comcast, finally last night I just go the one direct connection with cable working again.
Any other experiences like this??? I want to use wireless and just need to know what the best way to proceed may be.
    Thanks,

Alexkywalker, Welcome to the discussion area!
Whenever you switch the Ethernet connection from a cable modem from one device to another you need to power down the modem. This will force the cable modem to forget the device it was talking with. The cable modem will then discover the new device and communicate with that.
BTW, the AirPort Express (AX) has an auto-sensing Ethernet port and therefore will work with any type of Ethernet cable.

I have OS 10.8.2 and use wireless at home just fine.
When I visit a friend with only a cable modem internet my Mac Book Pro will not connect.
I see that the Mac Book Pro is picking up the internet when I check the internet preference section but it will not open Safari.
What do I need to do connect via a cable modem?

You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

  • Using TimeCapsule with a Comcast modem AND Airport Express. Way slower after updates! What's up?

I've been running this set up for two years now without a hitch.  Comcast Modem to TimeCapsule by Ethernet.  Then TimeCapsule to Airport Express via WiFi.  It used to work great because my TC was far away from my family room and the AE extended my network flawlessly.
After Mavericks and IOS 7.06 installations on my devices (iMac, Macbook Air,  iPhone, and iPad) my wifi seems to be moving at half speed.  I've rebooted the Comcast Modem and  TimeCapsule. I guess I should reboot airport express as well.  But I doubt thats the problem.  I was thinking of asking Comcast to change out Modems but this is a new problem only since updates. What should I do?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Marylyn

Power off the entire network.....all devices....computers, printers, modem, TC, mobile devices, etc
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start the TC next and let it run a full minute
Keep starting devices one a time about a minute apart until the entire network is powered back up
    Check the network

  • Has anyone else experienced problems logging onto internet after ios7 update?  I have to go through all these resets of iPad and the modem until the iPad recognizes the home internet. It is highly frustrating.

to recognize the wifi. I have to reset the iPad network settings in airplane mode and the modem each time I need to use the internet. If I'm lucky the iPad will then accept the wifi code and join the network. so frustrating!

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. wireless stops working. All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in and TC cycles up and have green light as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly. TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. Wireless stops working with no light showing and Link indicator on modem off.
All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in.
TC cycles up and green light appears as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly.
TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

I have the latest and greatest Time Capsule and Comcast. Here is the weird thing. If I have one network set up, then occasionally that network will wedge. If I set up a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz network, then one of them (usually the 5GHz) will wedge. I saw this with a previous Time Capsule, Apple said call Comcast. They checked it out and said it was Apple's problem. Apple said maybe you Time Capsule is bad, so I bought a new one. The problem persists.
Tonight it's not complely wedged, but super slow. The 5GHz network is getting 0.45Mb/s while the 2.4GHz network is getting 17Mb/s. Both are coming in from the same Comcast cable modem. Apparently the Time Capsule treats them as separate.
Is it the cable modem or the Time Capsule. I am betting on the Time Capsule, since rebooting it fixes the problem. Resetting the cable modem does not.
Apple is NO HELP at all. They say reset the Time Capsule. Did that fix it? Yes. Problem solved! No, problem not solved. It will happen again in a few hours.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Generally someone only has the choice of one or two broadband ISPs. If service from Comcast is reliable, I'd go with them if they can supply you with a "dumb" (i.e., no router functionality) modem. That should make setup of an AirPort Extreme very simple.
Reliability is the most important thing. In theory you only need configure things once, but you're dependent on reliability every day.
By the way, is there a reason you posted your message in the section for "AirPort for Windows"?

I have a Zoom cable modem and WRT400N modem. When I hook the modem directly to the computer I gain access to the Internet.  The problem is when I try to use the router, the Internet does not work. I can access the router GUI no problem. I have tried all the resets for both modem and router. I even resorted to calling Comcast support. I have never had trouble using a router, but then again, I have never used Comcast. I bet it is something simple, but I can't figure it out. ANy help would be appreciated.

Connect modem to the router's internet port.
Connect the computer [the one online from the modem] to the router's #1 port.
    Access the router's GUI
On Set up TAB, leave internet connection type to DHCP
    Click MAC Address Clone Subtab
       Enable Mac Clone
       Click Clone your pc's mac
       Save
    Then Click Status Tab
If you dont have IP add, click DHCP or IP Renew until you have your IP
or Turn off Modem and Router
    Switch on Modem first
Wait for all the leds to get stable
    Then switch on the Router
If power light is steady, try to access the internet

I cannot connect my Ipad to a Comcast modem network with the correct password. Other devices work fine.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
