Wrt54g2 v1 dies a slow death?

Howdy everyone,
Just curious if anyone else has run into this odd problem...  I've had a WRT54G2 for less than 90 days and last night it seemed to die a slow death over several hours.
The first symptom was all browser pages loading extremely slowly or not resolving at all and later the router appeared to not be connecting to an also newish Linksys CM1000 modem. I then logged into the router and confirmed it was not receiving an ip address from the modem.  The modem and net connection are both fine after a direct connection test so the issue is definitely the router and now the router isn't connecting to the modem at all.
I've done all the usual troubleshooting including multiple power recycles and resets to no avail.
Anyone else run into this slow death spiral?
Thanks.

Have you tried to upgrade the firmware of your Router? You can download the firmware from the Linksys website and Upgrade / Re-flash the firmware on your Router.
Once the firmware upgrade is completed successfully, then you need to reset your router and re-configure all the settings on it from scratch.

  • The slow death of Mail.app on iPod Touch 2.0.2 ...

Since the upgrade to 2.0.2 Mail.app on my Touch keeps on dieing on me. Usually it works for a couple of days before it gets to the stage where when I open Mail I just see the white screen before it crashes a couple of seconds later.
I tried everything suggested anywhere, restoring from back up, setting it up as a new iPod...
Now yesterday I could actually see it degrading to the point where it was dead (again):
During the day it's hooked up to the WiFi at work and I get my Exchange mail on it. During the day I noticed that from the mails popping up on the Touch before they came into Outlook it went via mails popping up on the Touch after Outlook with more and more delay to the point where push didn't work at all any more and I had to go into Mail and then it would pull the mails. And finally in the afternoon it didn't even do that any more and in the end it got to the point where Mail greeted me with the now all so familiar white screen before it crashes...
I'm now waiting for the point where it doesn't even show the unread number of mails any more which I had last time before I restored it...
Quite frankly, I'm getting to the point where I'm rather annoyed! It can't be possible that I have to restore my Touch from scratch again every week or two!
So far I don't have the problem with 3rd party apps crashing on me but my confidence into the statement of Big Steve that app crashes will be fixed in the next version is kind of understated, to put it mildly... If Apple doesn't even get their own apps stable how can they be expected to fix 3rd party apps??
Don't get me wrong, I'm using Mac for about 10 years now and love the stability and speed of OS X. I just don't get it: the Touch is a piece of specific hardware in a locked down eco system and yet Apple is still unable to supply on this platform the same stability as on "normal" OS X with all the stuff I can manually break on there and all the software I can run on it.
I would like to get this fixed once and for all!
    Frank

And now I'm also getting the Error 0xE800002E when I try to update apps on the Touch... This thing turns out to be almost a crappy as Windows Mobile....
Apple, is RESTORING from scratch your ONLY answer to everything? What about FIXING things?? With things like this I can see why people don't want iPhones / iPods in enterprise environments... These days I can even FIX Windows and don't have to RESTORE it every time something goes wrong...
Again, don't forget that I'm a Mac Man... question is just for how long ...

  • Computer screen dying a slow death

I've noticed that my display is somewhat dimmed in two areas on the bottom of the screen when I wake the computer from sleep.
Ususally looks fine after a minute or so.
Does this mean the screen is dying?

No, this is normal for CCFL backlit systems. It's the backlight warming up

  • WRT54G2 v1 - Internet is Slow Wireless AND WIRED

OK, so I get my internet from a ethernet cable connected to the wall (I dont know if its cable or dsl because I live in an apartment) . When I connect from the wall to my Macbook the internet is fast with Mbps around 30. But, when I connect the ethernet cable into my router and try to access the internet, wireless or wired through the router it takes 15 seconds to load a Yahoo page or a Facebook page
Now the confusing part. When I use the wireless on my PS3 (set up with auto setting on it) it goes fast enough where it can even stream HD Netflix movies and fast enough to not get lag on Call of Duty or figting games. But, when I wanna look at a web page on my iPod Touch, Blackberry Phone, Macbook Pro, and 3DS it takes ages to load one. Interestingly enough I tried SpeedTest.net on my Macbook and these are my result when connected wirelessly (still takes ages to load a webpage, and it doesnt load hulu or youtube videos).
    Any advice will help!
    Solved!

As the previous poster suggested do a hard reset by holding in the reset button for at least 30 second then reconfigure the router if needed. You can also try the 30-30-30 reset where by you hold in the reset button for 30 second, then while still holding in the reset button, remove the power and wait 30 seconds, then while still pressing the reset button, reapply the power and wait another 30 seconds then release the reset button and reconfigure the router if needed.
It isn't clear if you are using some kind of broadband modem. If you are not using a broadband modem, have you tried to connect the Ethernet cable that comes from the wall to one of the four networking ports on the back of the router rather than the router's WAN/Internet port? Its possible your building all ready is using a router/hub. If this is the case and your computer gets an IP address from the building's router then log into the router and on the Basic Setup page disable the router's DHCP server to avoid conflicts with the building existing DHCP server.

  • PMG5 dying a very slow death

    went for a system overhaul.
changed logic board/processor/power supply in Sep
got the system back in Oct
heard the power supply go pop and machine was dead again
    went for repairs again
    changed processors
got the system back in a week
my dual processors is running at handicap of 1 processor only. hanged on software updates frequently.
    i am so ******.

Dang man. You and me in the same boat. Logic board blew twice! They gave me a faulty one the 2nd time! so i'm on my 3rd. Months later my PSU blows out. STILL havent gotten it fixed, apple told me to go pound sand. (Outta warranty)
Your blown PSU meant a dead CPU? That worries me.

  • Slow death of free disk space

I have baseline KDE loaded on my Arch installation, on my 16GB flash drive. After last night's -Syu update (I do this at least once every two or three days), the "disk storage space" applet says that whenever I'm running Arch, my free space goes down ~0.1GB per minute, but resets to what it should be after each restart. I suppose it is possible that this was happening after the update before that, but I do not believe so. I always have my Disk Space applet running.
I know this happened once before, about a month and a half ago, but only once. I did not notice it until I could not download a school document, because there was "no free space on disk."
After I noticed the space drain this time around, I looked on the internet, and found out that some people had almost the same problem, but theirs was characterized by high CPU usage. This is not the case with me, but perhaps since I'm running off of a USB drive, the drive itself is the bottleneck?
I had gone through a few window managers, from OB (when I installed LXDE's group) to Enlightenment to KDE's, and tried a lot of different application solutions for terminals, editors, etc., but as far as I know, I cleaned out my system of those that did not suit my tastes. I do not believe I have any leftover rogue services running from my LXDE or E days.
As I've been writing this, my free space has gone down from 5.6GB free to 4.4GB free. HELP ME MAKE IT STOP!

  • Safari DNS problem in Yosemite? Works, then slow death...

Safari 8.0 + Yosemite seems to have a problem. It will work for a while, then begins to fail to load and is unable to resolve top level domains -  "Safari Can't Find the Server ... [e.g. apple.com]"
Restarting Safari often resolves the issue for a while (minutes, hours?), then performance deteriorates until it finally gives up and generates the error. Chrome, on the same machine, does not suffer this problem.
17" Intel iMac, Safari 8.0, Yosemite, Exede broadband (satellite).
Anybody else see this issue and/or have a solution?
    iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    Hi Phillip...
I'm not having issues with Facebook on either Safari or Chrome running Yosemite. Try maintenance for Safari.
Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions, issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If nothing above worked, restart your internet modem and router if you use one then try Facebook on Safari.

  • Torch 9860 dies an early death

I am unimpressed with the inability to contact BB ref a product of theirs. I purchased my Torch under 2 years ago, never dropped it and took good care of it. the other day, I turned it on and it was perfectly fine. a little while later I went to check my email and the phone was off. it would not turn on. I thought maybe the battery was dead, so I plugged it in. nothing. went to supportand tried all the fixes...nothing. Battery is fine...works fine in my husband's BB. this phone completely done. Lost all my contact info as I can't access my backup without the phone. went to local provider...$165 left on my contract. this doesn't include cost of a new phone. used to be a loyal blackberry customer. Blackberry....your products should last longer than 2 years....

Sandie_M51, did you have a backup made with the desktop software or have BlackBerry Protect installed?
And what repair center was this, and do you know what they might have done to revive it?

  • Slow death now terminal???

The wireless features of the Macs seem to die over time.
I have several Macs, three portables currently. The "oldest" is a 17" Macbook pro. It is connected to a 23" Cine display and uses an Apple wireless keyboard & mouse. Frankly, I don't know what to call the mouse because it does not say (magic mouse? mighty mouse?). It's white and has a small ball protruding from the top. Model A1197
All worked fantastic for a few months, then started "losing connection" randomly. At first this only affected the mouse. The connection would typically return in a minute or so and work fine for the next 2 minutes or 2 hours before again lossing connectivity.
As the symptom with the mouse became more severe, the keyboard started losing connectivity on occaision as well.
As of today, I believe the system has completely given up. The mouse lost connectivity several times today, and after losing the connection the most recent time, has not come back. It has been an hour. New batteries, Zapped PRAM. Checked bluetooth settings. Added mouse then keyboard as favourites.
    No luck.
Furthermore, this symptom started when I was still using OS 10.6 (whatever animal that was).
I recently upgraded to OS 10.7 Lion and the symptom was exactly the same.
I've since replaced the hard drive and memory in the Macbook Pro, did a fresh install of OS 10.7 Lion ... and the mouse behaved exactly the same. Lost connection constantly until it finally gave up completely today.
As the computer's hard drive is new and working on a completely fresh Mac OS install, assuming the problem lies with the mouse itself.
This thing simply is not that old. Are these things prone to die like this?

Is is possible that Bluetooth on the computer itself could die in stages?
The Apple wireless keyboard still works fairly consistently, but the white Apple mouse will no longer connect at all (it's been a day and no luck). Also tried a second Logitech wireless mouse and it can not be found by the computer either (it's correctly set for pairing but Bluetooth window simply says "No mouse found."

  • My ATI 1900XT is dying a slow death.... Should I replace it with Nvidia

    All,
My machine now hangs whenever I use graphic intensive applications or games. So I think it is time to replace the 1900XT Card that came with it.
Problem I have is what to replace it with. I have read that the new 8800 Cards will not allow Leopard to boot from the Install Disk. Is this true and is there a fix that does not involve swapping cards to simply do a rebuild or Boot Disk Repair.
    Looking for some Guidance please

You read right, 10.5.2 or later. Wait and hang in for now, and boost the fans; clean out dust bunnies the card pulls into the chamber. The 2600 is the el cheapish solution if you want to wait and see but need a quick fix.
I never reboot from the install DVD. I put it on FW disk to boot from, and I really wanted to hold off and wait for later DVDs anyway rather than be stuck in the "dot zero" world.
I'd skip spending on the 8800GT.

  • MBP slow death?

I bought this MBP 13 inch Jan of 2010 ... Till date I have had the mousepad changed twice and my CD drive changed twice. Now .. I have a white spot on the left side of my screen which is brighter then the rest of my display. Is it all going downhill from here?

My machine is covered by applecare. I spoke to a customer service rep over the phone and requested a replacement machine and who told me that I would not get one. He says to visit the showroom and have the display changed and he gave me his personal details so I could contact him if I had more problems.
What I don't get is..how many times do I need to have my parts changed to be eligible for a replacement? He had no answer to that and I'm beginning to feel like they want my computer to completely melt down before a replacement can even be considered. I persisted that it needs to be done but they won't budge.

  • IPod slow death... 60gig photo

My iPod started freezing more and more often and now.. it is dead.
It would freeze usually while playing. When it was frozen and I put my ear next to it I could hear a half second sound of a hard drive noise over and over, like a skipping record (this is not through the headphones--just putting the ipod by my ear). I would force reset. This happened like 2x over 3 days, and then the next day it happened a couple times, and got to the point where it was like 4 times in one day. Finally, it just stopped turning back on.
My computer does nothing when I plug it in. When I put it straight into the wall it usually does nothing, but once it showed the charging battery but it was frozen--like the little icon that shows 'charging' wasn't actually moving. It no longer responds to anyting at all, but before it stopped doing that it made the sad face. Poor lil' ipod. So what should I do? Is mailing it on the only option?
Also--quickly--I have always had a problem with it pausing itself when I use other headphones than the apple ones, especially when I use an auxillery cord for a setereo. I'm pretty sure what is happening is that the ipod thinks that the headphones have been unplugged so the obnoxious feature of it auto-pausing kicks in, and I have to hit play. It only does that when it was moving, esp. when I was working out. It has never done it with the apple buds (which are no longer functioning). It's like "Hey, use our headphones!" haha. Anyone else have this problem? Any way to solve it? Thanks! (More important is the first problem, as autopause doesn't apply if it is dead).

    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. BTW, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
    9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.

  • Is my computer dying a slow death?  HELP!

    Hello all.
I have a Quicksilver that has been acting up the past couple of days. I first noticed it when I tried to make an archive of a file and promptly got an error message saying, "The archive bill of materials cannot be created". OK, not a huge deal, I just used DropStuff which worked fine. A few minutes after that, I opened a PDF and tried to print it. The print dialog box came up, I clicked print and then nothing. It was like I never even sent the file to my printer. No print que, no nothing. So I tried printing some other various documents from other programs and received the same result, nothing. Then Acrobat Pro started acting screwy. All of the menus at the top were grayed out. I couldn't even quit the program, not even using Apple + Q worked. So I had to force quit. I then restarted my computer. I started a few of my programs (I believe it was GoLive, InDesign and Entourage). Not long after that, the computer locked up. Nothing was responding at all.
Today I am encountering the same problems. So I ran Norton SystemWorks on the machine. I know, probably not the greatest disk utility, but that's all I have at this time other than disk doctor which didn't come up with anything. Norton SystemWorks came up with a few "major errors" and said that it fixed them. So I restarted and tried to print a simple, one line of text, email from Entourage and received the error, "An error occurred while printing. Not enough memory." I then tried to print the same document and got nothing at all. No error message, no printed document. Nothing.
I've tried logging out of my account and setting up a new one to see if the same problems occurred and the do. Not being able to create an archive and print anyway.
I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
All of my OS and computer details below are correct.
    Thanks in advance.
    Seth
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)   PM G4: 800MHz/40GB/250GB/1.25GB RAM---15" PB G4: 1.5GHz/80GB/512MB---iPod 20GB

I would guess that there were corrupted system files or cache files causing the problem. However, now that you've used Norton's Systemworks the odds are good that the hard drive is now more messed up than before and possibly unfixable. Norton's utilities for the Mac are incompatible with recent versions of OS X and should never be used.
Depending upon the nature of the problem you may have some success with Disk Utility doing the following: Boot from your OS X Installer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
However, DU can only repair disk and directory damage, not file damage. So you may find that the hard drive is OK, but your system still won't work. In that case you need to do an Archive and Install which will let you install a fresh copy of OS X without erasing the hard drive.
If the hard drive is damaged and cannot be repaired by Disk Utility then you will need to reformat the hard drive. Because this will erase all your data you should backup your personal files first.
For disk repairs only use Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, or TechTool Pro. For general system maintenance I recommend TinkerTool System (shareware - www.versiontracker.com.) Maintaining regular backups would also make recovering from these problems much easier.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior. DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. However, DW is not yet compatible with Intel Macs. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    4. SuperDuper (Commercial)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
    6. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
    7. RsynchX 2.1 and PsyncX 2.2.1 (Freeware)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Wont charge off my car stereo dock

My old 2nd generation nano would charge and stay charged when connected to my car. My new 4th gen nano battery just dies a slow death when connected in my car. Help!

I just spoke to Apple tech support. The techie said that they changed the pin configuration and that he did not know of any workaround for in-car charging. He also said that the 4th gen Nano (out of the box) and the 3rd gen Nano (after the latest software update) will no longer go into standby mode when connected to non-apple interfaces. He also said that they are working on it and the standby mode should work again after the next software update.
