WRT54GC 100Mbps wired gives 37Mbps

I may be missing something obvious here for which I apologise in advance, but I've searched through these forums and the technical specifications for the WRT54GC router as far as I can understand them, and I'm still not sure why I'm getting the results I have.
I'm living in South Korea and have a 100Mbps connection in my apartment with LG Powercom, my ISP. When I connect my computer directly to the Internet I get upload and download speeds of approximately 93Mbps when testing a 100 megabyte transfer against LG's servers - which equals around 11.6MB/s.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9938/internetnorouterfp6.png
However, when I connect through the router (wired, not wirelessly), the speed is consistently around 38Mbps, or 4.8MB/s. The test results hold true for external download tests.

I understand that the wireless speed is 54Mbps (802.11g) but I thought the router should be capable of 100Mbps wired (100Base-TX). I know I'll never actually reach 100 in reality but I'm losing 50Mbps connecting through the router. I upgraded it to the latest version of the firmware (v1.05.7), but the results are consistent on the two computers I have running through the router.
Have I misunderstood the router's capabilities and is it limited to a maximum of 54Mbps both wirelessly and wired, and 38Mbps is about what I could reasonably expect when wired? Also, if I am stuck at 38Mbps, could anyone recommend a wired or wireless router than can actually manage 100Mbps wired?

With the WRT54GC router, only the switch is designed to run at 10/100 speeds.  So if you did a file transfer across your LAN, from one wired computer to another wired computer, you would get a 100 Mbps connection, and a data transfer rate of about 93 Mbps, which is about the limit for a 100 Mbps wired connection.
On the other hand, data passing through the Internet port of the WRT54GC must be processed by the router (which is a small computer).  The incoming data must pass through the router's firewall, get port forwarded (if this feature is used), get linked to the correct computer, and then must be directed to the appropriate wired port or out the wireless.  All this takes router processing power.  The bottom line is that it won't run at 100 Mbps.
When I checked on your router, its maximum speed (Intenet port to wired LAN port) is rated at 47 Mbps, only a little more than the 38 Mbps that you reported.
You should also be aware that a 54 Mbps wireless connection will not transfer data at 54 Mbps.  Under ideal lab conditions (read: not in your home) it can do about 25 Mbps of data transfer.  Most home users are lucky to get 10 Mbps of data transfer.
To get the higher router speeds that you crave, you will need to buy one of the newer, and more expensive routers, such as the WRT350N or the WRT600N.   According to one web site I checked, these models have a (WAN port to wired LAN port) speed of over 150 Mbps.  For fast wireless speed, you will also need a wireless n adapter.  This ideally will give you a wireless connection of 270 to 300 Mbps, and a wireless data transfer speed of 20 to 70 Mbps.
Hope this helps.

  • WRT54GC will not give wireless clients IP addresses

Hi, I'm here on a behalf of a friend. I'm working on a WRT54GC wireless router. The issue is that any wireless client wishing to connect to the router (after seeing the SSID) always fail at "Waiting for network" during the connection screen. However, wired clients are able to connect without any problems. I have updated the firmware to the latest one. No security features (WEP/WPA) are enabled. I have tried changing the channel and mode to no avail. MAC address filter is disabled. Wireless card drivers are up to date. I'd like to know what can be done to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance. -Keres

In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off the software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see it this helps.
Also, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
If you still have trouble, in the computer, go to the wireless adapter software, and go to "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ), and delete all the networks you find.  Reboot computer.  Then return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your unique network SSID, and set it to "automatic login".  Reboot computer.  You should connect automatically.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.

  • Can I have wired and wireless simultaneously - and connect via another Mac?

Here's my problem: My eMac (Feb 2005 running Leopard 10.5.8) is great except that it drops the ethernet cable internet every 15 minutes or so. "Sleep and wake" and I'm back on the internet for another 10-20 minutes, but this is not a long-term solution.
OK so I say that I will get a D-Link wireless USB adapter for the eMac (it has bluetooth, but not WiFi). Fine, except then the D-Link DIR-635 router that sends the WiFi signal is too far away and too weak. But I have another computer to which I can plug-in the Ethernet CABLE. Can I then connect the eMac via a wireless (airport) sharing? NOTE: At this time the ISP Modem goes to a DIR-635 router (a wired and wireless router) and the cable goes up 2 flights of stairs to the eMac. I'd plan to then plug-in the PBG4-12" to the cable instead of the eMac; and then connect the eMac via wireless sharing if that is possible. (The PBG4 does NOT drop the signal via wired ethernet - it is a problem with the eMac not the cable or router).
BUT then how to print? My MP640 printer is set-up for wired printing only right now. And for a number of reasons, I really want to keep it on wired (not wireless)-- I use this with another computer etc. etc. and wired gives me more selections for printing...
Any comments on this possibility and then I'll reply with comments and/or ideas-- THANKS!
    Best regards,

If you use two routers then you should have the main one (connected to modem) as the official router. The second one should be configured to extend the existing network (you will need to consult its manual to find out how that's done.) If you try using two routers independently, then they will tend to interfere with each other because both are trying to deliver IP numbers on the network. So if the printer ends up on the secondary router then a machine connected to the main router may not be able to connect to the printer.

  • ITunes with Aiport Express on Windows 7 x64

Since I installed Windows 7 x64 RTM, I have had stuttering problems when connecting to an Airport Express to play music. When I only play the audio on my computer, it plays fine. When I connect to an Airport express (either by itself or with multiple connections) is when the problem occurs.
I have tried different network card drivers as well as another network card, and the problem persists. I did not have any issues with Vista SP2 x64.
    System Configuration:
    Windows 7 Home Premium RTM
    Gigabyte AMD780G motherboard
AMD Phenom 9550 (quad core) CPU
    8GB RAM
    750GB HD (mirrored RAID)
    AMD 4850 graphics card (1680x1050)
Onboard gigabit LAN / Linksys PCI gigabit ethernet card
    iTunes 8.2.1.6
    Airport Express firmware 6.3
All wired Gigabit connections (except the 100mbps wired Airport)
    Any ideas?

So I uninstalled all iTunes related software (iTunes, Apple update, Bonjour, etc.), deleted all registry entries for anything Apple related, rebooted, and reinstalled. Same thing happens.
I changed the wireless channel on the airports (even though they are wired and setup as routers, with nothing connecting to either) the problem still persists.
As I mentioned previously, I had no problems with Vista x64. My other machine still has Vista 64 and has no issues. The problem is with the Windows 7 x64 (RTM) machine (which again, worked flawlessly with Vista x64 installed).
So, this is an iTunes not liking Win7 problem.

  • Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router

Is there any reason why a cat 5e ethernet cable will not work with the subject router?
Another way of asking the question, does the cable transmission speed have to be compatible with any "speed" limit associated with this router?

Hi raedell. CAT 5e or Category 5e cable, according to some networking sites, provides performance of up to 100 MHz and is suitable for 10Base-T, 100Base-TX (Fast Ethernet) and 1000Base-T (Gigabit Ethernet). Your speed depends on how much speed your ISP gave you. It will only depends on the router you'll connect your computer to the said router using an Ethernet cable. Say for example, if your ISP gave you fast internet connection speed and your computer has a Gigabit LAN card but you're using WRT54G2. What will happen is that, you can't take advantage of the fast Gigabit speed since router can only provide maximum of 100Mbps wired connection speed. However, if your router is properly configured, then using CAT 5e cable to the said router, should work.

  • Will WRT54G Support 20MBps download from Comcast ISP?

Comcast offers 20mbps download speed. Will my WRT54G v4 support this speed?
My speed test directly from the modem supported, but when going through the WRT54G, I range from 8 - 15mbps download. Not sure if it is the version, the ability of the router or something on my computer(s).
Comcast said I would need to purchase a newer router... If that is the case will I need to also purchase a new NIC card?
    Thanks,

Normally, you are good for 54mbps (wireless) and 100mbps (wired) on the wrt54g.  Either, router is too far from your computer or you have some inteferrence from other equipment (TV, cellphone, cordless phone, microwave).  Try a different channel on your router.

  • Airport Extreme has been updated with Gigabit ethernet - so soon!!!

I just bought a brand new state of the art AE two months ago and then Apple just updates it with Gigabit ethernet so soon after?! I feel cheated in every way!

If you want to measure speeds - actually the Kona disk utility is a pretty decent free tool you can use - it's typically used for testing disk for media encoding/decoding, but it's got a nice graph you can look at to see what the drive performance looks like over time.
To make sure you're running as fast as possible - try connecting the disk directly (assuming you're using a USB-2 bus and a USB-2 hub) and transferring files, then compare that to what you're getting across the AEBS .. also try eliminating the hub - I've found many hubs that are "rated" as USB-2, but don't run very close to rate. With the older AEBS you should get 100Mbps wired and 130Mbps with 802.11n .. best case is you're running about 25% of what the USB-2 bus is capable of.
oh, and you can verify your connection speed with Network Utilities -- look at the Info tab for each of your interfaces to see your negotiated rates

  • Not backing up when going to sleep?

A few times each day, after my computer's been sleeping, it turns back on and says that hit had an error backing up. I then click okay and it seems that it's good to go for a while. But it always pops up again. I am guessing it has something to do with the system going to sleep right as it's beginning the backup process or the like, but am clueless as to how to figure out what's going on and how to fix it. Any and all thoughts appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi dhaz-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Generally this behavior is caused by an external peripheral or internal PCI card.
Try disconnecting all USB and FireWire peripherals including hubs. If the mouse and keyboard are wired give each of those it's own USB port on the Mac. See if this solves the problem.
    Luck-

  • 74Mbps WIRED 135Mbps WIFI - GBE ONLY 100Mbps! FIX?

My model DPC3941T gives me 135~Mbps over WiFi on my BLAST! 105 service connection.     However, the GBE LAN ports cannot be set higher than 100Mbps on the router. I have the Tx Rx speed set to 1000Mbps on the PCIe ethernet network adapter.  The DPC3941T is wired to the PC with CAT6 rated to 550mhz, and the cord is both brand new, uncrimped, and shielded.  Both the adapter and the LAN GBE are running at 100Mbps. This is causing my ethernet connection to max out at a bout 74Mbps.    Can  anyone provide me with any information as to how to proceed from this point, as I am at a loss as to how to solve the problem.  I can't set the LAN GBE negotiation speed, and setting the PCIe ethernet network adapter to 1000mbps has yielded no results.   Sincerely,Fuze

Hmm for some reason the correction to my last message didn't post. I mistook the word cable to mean cat5 cable from the wall to the modem.     The cat6 (ethernet) cable is brand spanking new.  I actually have tried three different cables from a modem to the PC.   The xfinity gateway/modem gives me 74mbps via LAN, where as the modem I purchased before I picked up the xfinity modem (the Netgear N600 C3700) only clocked in at 34-52mbps. If I need to buy a second device, why am I paying xfinity an extra 10 bucks a month to rent their equipment?  I purchased another modem last night.  I picked a motorola arris that ONLY has gbe LAN.  The box says speeds up to 135mbps.   I can't register it though, as the activation part of xfinity won't be open until 9 am monday morning.  =(    I've spent a lot of effort researching this, and so far the only solution to the problem is: Since the majority of americans are not concerned with/interested in/knowledgable of/ the actual application of computer sciences in ways other than downloading/media bombardment/illegal activity/casual encounters with others (both competitive and sexual), companies through which the application of computer sciences known as the internet is provided no longer feel the need to fully provide their promised services to any of their customers; they do so because they can get away with it.

  • Can AirPort express be used for AirPlay with my home stereo, and to give my Xbox 360 a WIRED internet connection via ethernet, simultaneously?

I am considering buying an airport but I am not sure if it will work how I would like it to.  I need it for two things.  The first would be to use for AirPlay with my home stereo.  The second would be to use as a way to give my Xbox 360 a WIRED internet connection via the ethernet port.  I would like to do these things simultaneously, rather than constantly changing the configuration and being limited to a single function each time I do so.
    Thanks!

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, it would join an existing wireless network and its Ethernet port would be enabled for a wired client, like your Xbox 360. This configuration would also support AirPlay simultaneously.

  • WRT54GC config to connect a wired-printer on existing wireless network

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me with the following issue :
    - I have an existing wireless network at home, set up with a wireless router/dsl connection
    - I now have been given a wired-printer, and I'd like to connect my printer to the existing wireless network, using a WRT54GC device.
I have been trying for a while, and I believe but can't manage to configure the device do this, and didn't find this in the forum yet.
As anyone already done this successfully ?
    Thank you

What is the make and model of your printer?  What type of connections does it have -- ethernet port?   USB port?  Parallel port?
If your printer has an ethernet port, you can wire it directly to your router.
If your printer has only a USB port, you will need a printer server such as the Linksys WPS54G, WPSM54G.    These devices will allow you to use the printer as a wired or wireless printer.  Both of these devices support USB 1.1 and USB 2.0
I do not recommend the Linksys PSUS4 (wired print server with 4 port switch), because it only supports USB 1.1

  • WRT610N V2 wired as 2ndary router to wired router, does not give IP address wirelessly

My WRT610N V2 is wired as 2ndary router to a wired router but it does not give IP address wirelessly to connected PCs.
It is getting DHCP IP address in the 192.168.1.xxx range from the 1st router, on its internet port, and issuing properly an IP addresses in the 10.10.1.xxx range thru its LAN port  when wired to a laptop.
But if I connect to its 10.10.2.xxx wireless network with another laptop, the wifi adapter utility software shows the laptop is connected, but the laptop is not receiving an IP address.  Please help in correcting this, as I need to use this router to give internet access wirelessly to guest laptops.
I know DDWRT does this kind of bridging with secondary DHCP when both routers are connected wirelessly, but it seems to me that if the 1st and 2nd router are wired together, DDWRT shuld not be needed for 2ndary HCP to take place.
And 2ndary DHCP is indeed working for those laptops wired to the 2ndary Cisco router: seems to me it should be able to do it also wirelessly.

  • Wired app gives me only grey screen

I purchased the first 2 issues of the Wired magazine.
I had a problem with last iPad OS update (3.2.1) and after a full restore, my Wired app is just a big grey screen.
I have not the option to download the latest issue as the system thinks I've it already. The View button produces a complete grey screen. Touching it brings the normal navigator but it's without data at all
Anybody have encountered the same issue? How did you fix it?

Same here, i restored my iPad and got the gray screen on all purchased issues.
    Anyone found a solution?
Even worse, i deleted the app, downloaded it again and now all my purchased issues dont have a View Button, only a Buy.
They are asking me to pay for the Wired i already purchase...terrible.
