WRT54GC shows excellent signal, but has no connectivity...

I have a wrt54GC along with an external 7dBi antenna. My problem is that it will show great signal and the windows connection icon does not show the limited connectivity symbol but my connection will stop working until I repair the connection. Any ideas?

I have the same issue...just bought a new antenna but it doesn't seem to add any range to my wireless at home...

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

  • Shows no video but has sound

Show no video but has sound what do I need to do to fix this?

Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons simultaneously, ignoring the red power off slider, until the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons. This should not affect any content on the iPad, it is similar to rebooting your computer.

I can not get the iPad to connect to the internet thru the router it shows the modum but will not connect it keeps saying choose a netwokand the IP Address it automaticaly puts in is wrong?

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.

I had the same problem with my iphone 4S. I paired it to a Bluetooth device (Bose Sound speaker) and accidently "forgot" the device. After that I couldn´t pair it again, not could I connect it to my Time Capsule, it said the password was incorrect. However, both devices worked perfectly with another iphone and my mac. I tried resetting network settings, the phone, the wifi connection, but nothing worked. Eventually I ended up restoring my iphone, backed it up to the latest backup, and BINGO! everything works!!! Good luck!!!

How do i restore my wifi setting back to the factory settings? I have changed it somehow :/ and now my wifi will not connect. My Airport is on and showing full strength but will not connect.

Ok, if other devices are connecting but just not your MacBook then let's start troubleshooting the MacBook to possibly find out why.
Please try each of the following, in order, until hopefully resolved:
Note the following are excerpts from an OS X Daily article.
    * Turn Airport on & off – You can do this via the Airport menu bar or from the Network Preferences. This is the first thing you should try when troubleshooting Mac wireless problems.
    * Make sure Wireless/Airport card software & firmware is up to date – This is usually done just by going to the Software Update menu, if there are any updates available for your Mac or Airport, install them.
    * Delete and recreate connection – Try deleting and recreating/reestablishing the wireless connection, sometimes a setting can be corrupted and this may fix it.
    * Create a new Network Location – Similar to the above suggestion, try creating a new and different wireless network location to see if it resolves the connection problems.
    * Change DHCP auto settings to manual – sometimes there is a problem with the DHCP server, and if you manually set an IP address on the network you can be fine. Remember to set the IP to a high number so it wouldn’t interfere with other DHCP machines. As long as you have the subnet mask, router, and DNS settings configured manually as well, this shouldn’t be a problem.
    * Flush the DNS cache – Launch the Terminal and enter the following command onto one full line within the Terminal: dscacheutil -flushcache
    * Zap the PRAM – Reboot your Mac and hold Command+Option+P+R during restart until you hear another chime, let the Mac boot as usual.
    * Delete Wireless Config files – Delete com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist files from ~/Library/Preferences and reboot
    * Trash your home directories SystemConfiguration – Remove all files within ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and then reboot your Mac.
    * Reset your Mac’s System Management Controller (SMC) – For MacBook and MacBook Pro’s: Shutdown the MacBook/Pro, remove the battery, disconnect the power, hold the Power Key for 15 seconds. Replace the battery, reconnect power, and zap the PRAM and wait for 2 chimes before letting the keys go. Let boot as usual.

  • HT1212 How do i restore my iphone 4 when it does not have current IOS and i have forgotten passcode.  Not showing in itunes but has connect to itunes logo on screen???

I previously had an iPhone 4 which has since been put away in a drawer now that I have an iPhone 5.  I would like to give my iphone 4 to someone else to use but could not remember my passcode - have tried a few times (I believe I have one more try before it gets disabled - so I have stopped trying).  Read somewhere that you can just restore your phone which works for me as I wanted to clear it anyway.  When I connect my phone to itunes and clicked on restore it said update and restore which I clicked on and left it to do its work.  However, a while later an error code popped up saying that it could not update or back up the phone as the phone was locked .  Now my phone just has the itunes logo on it but when I connect the phone to the computer and I manually open itunes, my phone is not recognised.
What can I do?  Please help!!!

  • Laptops show great signal but internet doesn't work

My desktop and several laptops within my family all show excellent internet signals (5 bars); however, two of our laptops connect to the internet but their browsers say we are not connected to the internet (or a "connection is limited"). Two other laptops work fine. I do not think it is a bandwidth issue and I think there is enough room because I have tried connecting with the two bad laptops when all other devices are turned off.
Could my operating system have anything to do with it? I have leopard right now and am considering upgrading to snow leopard.
    Thanks

    Hard-2 ,
First think to check it to see what IP address it has picked up, if it's 192.x.x.x then fine, if 196.x.x.x the it hasn't got it's self configured, presuming you are using DHCP from the router?

  • Time capsule produces a signal, but won't connect or backup

I have looked at some of the other discussions here; some are similar, but I can't find an answer.
I have a TC, Macbook Pro and an iPhone 4, all between 6-10 months old.   My problems started when I turned on all my stuff after being away for 4 weeks over the summer.
My Macbook pro's AirPort recognises the TC - I have a 'full signal' reading at the top of the page.  However, when I try and connect to the internet, I'm told it can't connect to the server.  If I just keep trying, re-entering addresses (from the scroll-down bar, so always exactly the same), it eventually connects and I have a great connection, which I can use to watch movies/download stuff no problem.  Why is it so **** illogical?  Why does it connect on the 20th attempt, and not on the first?  This happens however long the computer has been on, and regardless of when I last connected to the internet.
The biggest problem is that I have a Vodafone 'Sure Signal' signal booster attached to the TC.  Without it, I get no phone signal.  The Sure Signal does not recognise the signal from the TC at all.  I have done factory resets on both - individually and together, and nothing has changed.  I have turned the Sure Signal off, but the TC still doesn't work properly.
My iPhone won't connect either.  It too shows a 'full signal', but when I try and connect it says connected/not connected alternately about every 1 second.
The TC is connected to the internet via a cable from my landlord's router, next door.  They have perfect signal.  They also have a signal booster in their house, which used to interfere with my TC (when it worked).  I changed the channel on my TC, and now, when it connects, there is no interference.
Please can someone enlighten me - I have worked though every thing I can, and I can't go any further because I can't see any logic to the problem.
** Since these problems have started, the TC has not backed anything up - I can't get it to back up, whatever I've tried.
** Each time I have re-made my network, when I open Airport Utility, it says 'no wireless devices recognised', and I have to re-start the TC in order to be able to do anything to it.

    Try changing the Firewall setting:
    mDNSResponder - Allow incoming connections
    Background:
My Time Capsule was working perfectly in Leopard.
When I upgraded to Slow Leopard, Airport Utility was no longer able to see the Time Capsule - although my Mac (MBP) was still able to connect to the wireless network and out onto the Internet.
The next day or so I upgraded to Lion (Snow Leopard was only installed to get App store) - the situation remained the same.
From another Mac (MB - still running Leopard) Airport Utility was still able to connect to Time Capsule.
I edited the firewall settings on my Lion MBP:
The mDNSResponder was set to "Block incoming connections".
I changed this to "Allow incoming connections".
Airport Utility was then was then able to see the Time Capsule (I can't recall now if I needed a reboot after changing this).
    HTH.

  • I have a signal but can not connect to internet.

Ok, I have an Ibook clamshell and an airport Graphite. The Ibook picks up a signal but when I go to Safari or Internet Explorer I get a message saying the server can not be found. Help, please?

In the opening screen of AirPort Admin Utility, check the firmware version of your Graphite base station. It should show up as "Description: Base Station Vx" where x is the firmware version. If it is earlier than 3.84, download updated firmware from this page and install it.
I found the user guide for your modem on Arris's Web site. It prompts me to suggest the following additional things:
    1. Although the user guide says to use a cross-over Ethernet cable for connection to a hub or home router (as opposed to the supplied cable, presumably a straight-through Ethernet cable, for direct connection to a computer), I believe that the Graphite acts like a computer in this regard instead of like a router. In other words, the Graphite connects to a modem, hub or router using a straight-through cable, but the Graphite would need a cross-over cable to connect to a computer. Try using a straight-through cable, if you haven't already.
    2. Try pushing the Reset button on the back of the modem. Use a pointed, non-metallic object to press the button. I recommend doing this while the Graphite and both computers are powered off, then start up the Graphite first, before the computers.
    3. This type of modem evidently does not itself serve as a router. It has connections for two computers (one via USB, one via Ethernet), but your ability to get two Internet connections through it depends on whether your Internet service provider is willing to supply two IP addresses. (If you try resetting the modem with the pc off, as in paragraph 2 above, and the Graphite acquires a working IP address, enabling the iBook to access the Internet, but the pc then can't, that would indicate that you can receive only one connection at a time.) I suspect that this is, in fact, your problem, unless your cable provider has said that you could connect two computers to the Internet with this modem.
It would be possible to share a single Internet connection, if the pc has either wireless or Ethernet capability. If it has wireless, you could simply disconnect the pc's USB connection to the modem and have it join the Graphite's wireless network. If it has Ethernet, you might be able to connect it to the modem's Ethernet port along with the Graphite, using an Ethernet hub, but this is difficult and uncertain, as well as less secure. If the pc can handle Ethernet, you'd be better off getting a newer and better wireless base station that has 2 or more Ethernet ports, or, alternatively, a router to be inserted between the modem and both the pc and the Graphite. In any case, a base station that can use WPA or WPA2 wireless encryption would be a great improvement, as the quite insecure WEP protocol is the best the Graphite can handle.

  • Airport reads full signal, but can not connect to internet

    Hi everyone,
I have a new powerbook that I'm trying to connect to a home network which is set up with a cable modem and a wireless linksys router. The airport reads that it has full signal from the "linksys" wireless network, however I can not get on the internet through the signal. When I connect the computer directly through the the ethernet port, it works fine. I've taken the computer to another location with the same cable modem and wireless linksys router setup, and it worked fine through the wireless. I've actually had this problem quite a few times with various wireless networks (it connects directly, but not through the full signal that reads on the airport), and I was wondering if there are some setting that need to be changed or checked for certain wireless networks. Any help would be great. Thanks,
    Sofi

I'm sorry I think this makes thing harder, but I have no idea. It's actually a friend's network so I can't check at the moment. I know there is no password to the network and that they have two pcs running fine wirelessly. Is there a way I can check these settings and see what's going on?

  • MacBook WIFI issue. States full signal but won't connect!

    Hey all,
I'm at the end of my tether here! I brought my MacBook back in Feb and loved it, was so pleased with it. A couple of months later the screen broke, so it was taken back to Comet who sent it away and repaired it, turns out the screen was faulty and there was also a "defective logic board". Got it back after 3 weeks and all was fine, until now!
When i purchased the MacBook i needed to buy a new router so i got an N router which has always worked perfectly, over the last week or 2 i found the connection kept dropping out, this happened before and it was VirginMedias problem which they fixed. I checked with them and there's no fault, checked the router and there's no fault and no settings changed, i then decided to try a neighbours WIFI, again, the MacBook connected and stated full signal but when i opened Safari it says i wasn't connected. The problem got worse and worse and i'm now at the point where i cannot connect to any network through WIFI at all, the only way i can get internet is if i use my Vodafone WIFI Dongle...which isn't the cheapest or easiest way of connecting to the net! I also have an iPhone 4 and a iPod Touch and they both still connect to the WIFI without any problems.
If anyone can help i would appreciate it so much! If i take the MacBook back to Comet they'll only want to send it away again and i'm not happy to do that, 1) Because i'll be without it for at least 3 weeks and i need it for work and 2) Since i got it back from the last repair i've discovered it wasn't put back together very well and the screws have been falling out of the base ever since.

Since you cannot connect, even at at another location, I'd agree that it seems to be a hardware problem, rather than ISP or software settings.
If purchased new or refurb direct from Apple, your MacBook came with a 1-year warranty, so you should be well within the initial warranty period.
If you're not happy with the service you're getting from Comet, escalate! Ask for the manager, and keep going up the chain until you get some satisfaction.
Finally, if Comet can't meet your needs, try another Apple authorized repair center or an Apple Store.

  • Airport card recieves signal but won't connect to internet.

I have a PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.4 (it came with an airport card) and in the next room over I'm using a PC with a D-link (Dl-524) 2.4GHZ router. The problem is that my laptop tells me it's connected to the group, and it says the signal is strong, but when I try to open Safari, Safari tells me I'm, "Not connected to the internet." Therefore, I think the problem lies not with the third party router, which is sending out the signal just fine, but with my laptop, or wireless card. Is there some setting I can change? This problem has existed for months, and I have to reset the router a couple of times a day.
This is what I do EVERY TIME:
*Reset the router - laptop still has the signal, now with the defalt groupname 'dlink'. Signal is still strong, but Safari tells me I'm not connected to the internet.
*Make a new group name for the router and click 'apply' (using the PC in the next room)- suddenly my laptop has internet.
It's bizarre. I don't understsand. Please help me.
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)   D-link router connected to PC via Netgear router

Hello everyone. I'm wondering if there is any new information to be reported on this thread because I'm having the same problem as adrixray.
I have a MacBookPro that I'm trying to connect to my new Airport Extreme. I upgraded to the Extreme from an old Linksys wireless B router that has been running perfectly fine on my Comcast modem(s) for 3 years. I upgraded so that I could use the Extreme on my AppleTV but so far I've had no luck getting it to work.
I've tried power cycling about a dozen times, had Comcast reset the modem, even talked to Apple tech support for about an hour and a half on the phone-- no luck. Tech support tells me it might be an issue with Comcast but, as I say, I'm able to successfully connect directly to the modem with an ethernet cable and am able to connect wirelessly with my Linksys connected. I've tried to connect with multiple devices and all of them can connect to the wireless network successfully but can't connect to the internet even though the light on the Airport Extreme is green.
I've searched multiple forums and found that many, many people have experienced this same problem and so far I haven't seen any solutions posted. Could it be a defective batch of routers?
adrixray: I would love to hear if you were ever able to resolve your issue.
Many thanks to all for your advice/help.

  • TS1398 I am connected to my wi-fi and have full signal but im not connecting online, help please

Connected to Talk Talk wi-fi with full signal but not connecting to internet, then my connection to wi-fi goes and I try to connect again which it does but still can't load to internet, help please

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Time Capsule will only allow Apple products to connect to internet, PC ad PS3 shows excellent signal from TC but won't allow connection.

I have a Mac, iPad, iPhone and several iPod touch devices that can connect to the internet through Time Capsule without a problem.  There are times when my work PC and PS3 won't connect to the internet through TC.  There doesn't seem to be any reason why this happens and it just started happening in the last month.  The PC indicates an excellent wireless connection.  If you have any suggestions please put it in very easy to understand terms (I'm not a very technical person).

Ok.. that is very helpful. What OS is your Mac running?
Please now take a few screenshots of your airport utility so I can see the setup of the TC.
But it looks like it is bridged.
Open the utility and click on manual setup.
Take a screenshot of the summary page.
Take a screenshot of the internet tab.
And the other two tabs there.. TCP/IP
    And DHCP
Yours will look different to mine.. but there is nothing in them that is needing to be hidden.. it is useless info to another person. I post mine to show it is useless in case it worries you.
I do need some more info.
What is the modem you have? Is it also a wifi router. In the list of wireless you took the snapshots of, you have several wireless names.. I want to know which of those are yours??
The WEP security device is a problem. It is old and near useless.. if you don't own it that is fine.. but if it is yours get rid of it.
Can your PC and PS3 connect to the internet via some other wireless?
It looks like you might be able to simply bypass the TC to connect the PC.
Sometimes it is easier to solve this problem by using different hardware.. and a secondary wireless AP can easily be plugged into a modem router if that is what you have to provide wireless just for your PC devices.
What model is your TC.. ?
Please look at the bottom rubber mat.. there is a number in the top line of the rubber molding.. It will say A1254 or A1302 or A1355 .. those are the numbers for Gen1 , 2 and 3. Gen4 it is on the paper label.. where it always should have been A1409. Please tell me that number.
