WRT54GC v2 wireless latency

Hi everyone,
I have a macbook pro connected to the wrt54gc v2 router via wireless and i'm having some anoying problems. I noticed that there is a big latency when loading pages or pinging external IP's.
I've been trying all kind of configurations and trying to find out the source of the problem , what i've found is that...
- There is no latency loading the routers configuration page or even pinging 192.168.1.1
- Hardwiring the macbook, the problem disappears.
- Download speeds are normal.
I've tryed changing all the wireless modes, Mixed, G and B mode. Changing wireless channel, wireless security modes (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc), changing beacon intervals, RTS and Fragmentation threshold and updating firmware.... none successful!
Could you guys PLEASE help me out here? I'm loosing my mind...

I think you must be facing this problem due to some kind of interference. So i think you need to change some settings on your Router, and that might solve your problem.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
- Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 50 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Windows 7 64 bit wireless latency

I have been struggling with an odd issue effecting openvpn on Windows 7 64-bit wireless.  Performance is very sluggish and my ping latency is very high across the openvpn connection when compared to WinXP wireless and Win7 wired connections.
This appears to be an issue with the Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN wireless card.  No firmware updates are available from Lenovo or Intel for the card.
Average ping latency is 30ms across vpn from WinXP in both wireless and wired as well as Win7 wired.  But goes to 130ms+ from Win7 wireless connection!  This translates to a remote session that is like working through molasses.  Stepping through code in Visual Studio on a remote machine from the Windows 7 machine when on a wireless connection has so much lag time it becomes unusable.  Making the remote connection on a wired ethernet or WinXP wireless N is as responsive as sitting in front of the remote machine.
Appears that my MTU is optimal for my internet connection.  I tested and found that 1480 is the minimum size packet where I can ping and return a "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set." response.  So I am leaving my MTU at 1500 on both wired and wireless on Win7 machine.
So far I have (I believe) ruled out the following:
Firewalls - both windows and at router - have turned off both with no effect
Antivirus - no change with it deactivated
Router settings - put laptop in DMZ and no change
MTU - tested 1500 as optimal
Thinkpad drivers and BIOS - all latest
Has anyone else run into issues with this Intel 1000 wireless  card?
    Thanks,

I had a real problem with wireless performance on multiple ThinkPads with Win7 until I realized there is a new (or maybe changed implementation) power setting in Win7 which was affecting it.
If you go into Control Panel -> Power Options and click "Change plan settings" for your current power plan.
On the next screen click on "Change advanced power settings"
On the next screen expand "Wireless Adapter Settings" and then "Power Saving Mode"
Make sure it is set to Maximum Performance.
Not sure if this will help your particular problem but hope it does.

  • Wireless latency/slow ping problems in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (SR MBP), I've experienced unusually high and unpredictable latency from the airport connection. The Ethernet connection works fine (consistent and short ping times to the wireless router), but the airport connection's ping times vary wildly. My computer is within a few feet of the router and a computer running 10.5.8 further away has no such difficulty. See example: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/amusiccale/Screenshot2009-09-05at101600AM .png
Running Ubuntu from a live CD, no such ping problem exists and the wireless connection works great, immediately out of the 'box': http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/amusiccale/Screenshot.png
Likewise, the problem does not appear from the Snow Leopard installation cd when I run network utility.
A different MBP (unibody) on Leopard does not have this problem with the same router (so it seems unlikely that the router is at fault), and I did not have this problem before my upgrading.
I have attempted deleting preference files for the wireless adapter without success. I have reinstalled snow leopard in place, making me wonder if the issue is the design/driver rather than an installation issue.
Programs I was able to use before in Leopard (such as Skype) that require a steady stream of information are now unusable.
How can I fix this issue?

  • Unusual wireless latency and speed issue

I have an odd problem where wireless connections to the home hub 3 will start to exhibit very high and varied latency from 40ms up to 1000ms every 15 to 30 seconds (pinging from laptop to homehub) and slow throughput of about 4Mbit.  The link speed is solid at 144Mbit/sec and the signal is always on maximum.
If I change the wireless channel on the router and the change it back to its original value the connection starts to behave and latency is normally 1-3ms with the odd spike up to 90 or so and realworld throughput jumps up to 60+Mbit/sec.
I suspected packet fragmentation back have confirmed this is not the case and now believe it to be a problem with the home hub as restarting it or changing the wireless channel will fix the issue for a few hours.  Anyone else had this problem and resolved it?  It is a pain because the connection does still work but it makes streaming high quality media impossible and online gaming becomes a pain with constant lag until I poke the router.

I assume you're using windows vista, 7 and it probably affects windows 8 as well.
When you're connected wirelessly, it never stops searching for a wireless connection and briefly disconnects you from the one you are connect to.
You can turn this off with a program called WLAN Optimizer.

  • A WRT54GC / WMP54G wireless connection issue

I let a friend of mine borrow my Linksys WRT54GC router. It is set up in one room (usually with the door closed). He is connected to the device with his computer using an internal WMP54G. His computer is located in a room across a tiny kitchen from the other room, door closed | rm1 | kitchen | rm2 | His walls are plaster. He generally experiences a low signal strength and a bad connection. Any ideas why?
Are there are any tools that can be used to diagnose the signal strength of the router or determine if there is interference on the channels used?
I've configured the router to use channels 1, 5 and 11. The issue still occurs regardless.

Sorry for jumping in here but I have a related problem with WMP54G v4 Wireless-G PCI adaptor.
I have this installed on a PC (windows XP) in a bedroom accessing a router in another room. 128-bit WEP encryption is used.
This has basically been working fine for quite some time until a couple of days ago when the connection to the router was lost. I now get an 'unable to associate with access point' message and no SSIDs are being found. Signal strength has always been excellent. Furthemore the Linksys icon in the system tray is 'greyed-out' and when I hover the mouse over it I get a 'Disabled' pop-up. I'm stuck. I don't know how to enable the program and have no idea what has caused it to become disabled.
As a last resort I thought about uninstalling and re-installing the software but when I try this using Windows Control Panel the uninstall wizard start but 'crashes' with an 'unable to uninstall - catastrophic failure' windows error message. To compound my confusion on some profiles on the PC (multiple profiles are set up) I can't even activate the Linksys management screens.
My wirelessd access point seems fine with the wireless indicator on the box (I'm using a Wanadoo Livebox if that means anything) suggesting all is fine at the wireless router end.
Help anyone! Where should I start.

  • Wireless works great. Wired can't get to work

I have an Extreme (N) that I bought just after the added Gigabit ports to it. I also have an old Express connected using WDS to boost the signal in the back of my house. I started having issues w/ wireless latency in the back room so I ran an ethernet cable from the Extreme to the Express. No matter what I did, I couldn't get the express to work (ie. communicate w/ the extreme) over the wired wire. If I plugged my macbook into the same cable and it works immediately (I get an IP address and internet connectivity). The odd thing is that when I plug in the cable, it shows a link light on the extreme so I know that it's communicating somehow.
I ended up moving the express back to WDS and just moved it closer to the extreme and that has helped the latency.
But now I want to hook up my Samsung Blu-ray player to that wired line and again, I cannot get the Blu-ray player to talk to the extreme. It will not get a DHCP address, will not communicate w/ the internet if I assign a static IP address, and when I try to ping it from my macbook I get 85% packet loss.
I would have thought this was a bad player if I hadn't had the previous experience w/ the express doing the exact same thing.
    Any thoughts?

    Hey DaddyPaycheck
It may not be about the "auto-negotiation" thing.
"auto-negotiation" is controlled by the hardware at boot up to check the NIC state. If a cable is connected at both ends, it detects a line voltage else ignores the NIC. If line voltage is present it starts testing certain pins #'s to see what's at the other end.
Test order ... WAN Port, LAN Port, Cable type Crossover, Cable type Straight, Client to Client, Client to Server, WAN to WAN, LAN to LAN, WAN to LAN, LAN to WAN, Negotiate a speed of the cable connection else BAD CABLE & ignores the NIC completely. Good Grief
This is totally unnecessary if you use the correct cable type & kind. Sorry if I sound like a broken record but too many posters keep blaming the SL upgrade but that's only the end result of new network requirements. Even I was able to use a Cat 5e @ 1Gbit/s with Leopard but SL drop it to 100 Mbit/s. I knew they changed something, found what they did, hacked it to make it work but the packet loss was incredibly. Switched to Cat 6 cable, now all is find and dandy.
For whatever reason each subsequent release of OSX seems to make the Mac "pickier" about the quality of the Ethernet cables it will work with. You can't even imagine how many posters scoff at me when I suggest a new cable.
Dude, I've seen some of your replies in posts around here. I look for them for sheer amusement.
I have had many instances throughout my career where a cable will work fine on one machine and not on another. Since a new cable is often only a few bucks it is a cheap, easy fix when it does work
An client called me with DSL problems the day after I set it up & I still laugh him. He moved the DSL modem so he could see the blinking lights but he rolled up the cable with twist ties. He didn't believe me when I told him about Crosstalk, I had to prove it to him.
No mater what you do some people just don't understand.

  • Cannot connect to internet wirelessly

I have a Linksys WRT54GC Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router. I'm currently using it at home, via a wired connection. I have used it at home before just fine. I then took it to school and it worked there as well. But when I brought it home again I started having trouble.
    Home set up:
Phone line -> DSL modem -> router 1 -> my router -> my computer (and a PC and a TiVo).
I was not able to connect to the internet at all with my router in the mix (without it I could connect fine) and could see and connect to the router (wired and wireless). Linksys tech support was able to get me connect to the internet by having me plug the cable from the first router into the wired out #4. Does not make any sense to me but it works... for wired connections.
I can see my wireless network and connect to it, but haven't be able to access the router configuration page wirelessly (recently), and I don't get the internet wirelessly... on my PowerBook. However I can connect to the internet with my nintendo DS, so the problem seems to be with my computer.
Under my system preferences I get this when I'm connected through the routers wired connection:
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Adress: 192.168.2.100
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP Client ID: (If required)
    Router: 192.168.2.1
    DNS Servers: (Optional)
    Search Domains: (Optional)
    IPv6 Address: fe80:0000:0000:0000:020a:95ff:fee0:0a0c
    Ethernet ID: 00:0a:95:e0:0a:0c
At first when I connect via AirPort I get a whole lot of nothing:
    AirPort ID: 00:0a:95:f7:98:b8
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Adress:
    Subnet Mask:
    DHCP Client ID: (If required)
    Router:
    DNS Servers: (Optional)
    Search Domains: (Optional)
    IPv6 Address: fe80:0000:0000:0000:020a:95ff:fee0:0a0c
And then I get an AirPort assigned IP address:
    AirPort ID: 00:0a:95:f7:98:b8
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Adress: 169.254.191.42 (self-assigned)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    DHCP Client ID: (If required)
    Router:
    DNS Servers: (Optional)
    Search Domains: (Optional)
    IPv6 Address: fe80:0000:0000:0000:020a:95ff:fee0:0a0c
If I manually set the IPv4 to the same settings as the ethernet settings it still does not work. I don't know what to do. If you need more info to be able to help let me know.

The 169.254.191.42 (self-assigned) simply means it isn't getting a response from any DHCP server/router.
I don't think it's ging to work with the first router plugged into LAN#4. I "think" the problem is/was that router #2 was also trying to hand out DHCP, it should just be set to be a dumb hub, passing DHCP from the 1st one.
Some Routers also need to be set to share the Wired/Wireless ports.
Also, if you have both Ethernet and Wireless in use, the order of the interfaces in Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations is important, the top being used for Internet, but you can drag them into other positions in the list.

  • SA520W - performance problems, lag, INSANE ping times

    Anyone experienced this?
On my 520w, I can experience wired ping times of up to 242 MS when doing a speedtest (comcast's, as I have comcast). My wireless latency is faster.
this box freezes frequently. I'm using it in a small home based environment. I have seen a few times my CPU hit 100%. The processing STOPS, dead. I can verify this via DNS; I have a server hooked up and assigned it DNS from DHCP. When the freeze occurs, every system using the DNS supplied by DHCP is stopped. Even my RDP connection is paused and frozen, even though pings still go through. Computers using a different dns server (like comcast, opendns, etc) will not have the freeze in browsing or connectivity.
Also, while a lesser issue.. there's no way to change the power on the wireless. If I turn it up or down, the machine will never respond again and will have to be hard reset. Wired, wireless config disappear, it drops packets, and is toast. I've never figured out why.
Cheers if anyone in the community or if Cisco would like some logs to see.

Tom, a big thumbs up to you buddy.
I was 100% sure I'd done that previously. Totally sure. I apparently didn't -- not only that but I was on 2.1.71.
The firmware update was the 1st thing I looked at -- I have no idea how I missed this, unless I looked > 20 dec 2012 and obviously it wasn't available.
I shall update and renew my config, and we shall see, said the blind man.

My wireless router is that TP-LINK and it`s firmware is updated to the latest version. (I using the stock firmware). There are no wireless network in range, that are using the same channel as mine is. The latency is happening to my friends connected to my router too. I am using wicd for network manager, and wicd-curses for network manager front-end.
I will post more info if needed.
Please advise me what can I do.
    Regards

Okay well I can see nothing that would cause this in anything you've posted. Especially if your friends are experiencing this too.
I would either try downgrading the firmware (If after upgrading this happened). However, I see that your TL-WR1043ND is VERY well supported by Open-WRT. You may want to give it a look.
Remember that the WiFi channels are overlapped. Try getting as far away as possible from other networks.
Ensure you are running WPA-PSK with the AES cipher and a key of 63 pseudorandom characters. This way others are not using your WiFi to torrent and suck bandwidth.
Try to stick to 802.11g but if at all possible go with 802.11n. Also if possible move up to the 5Ghz band to get out of the way of other things using the 2.4Ghz uncontrolled spectrum block.
If your router is running things like DHCP, DNS, FTP, SMB, SSH, NTP, VPN, Etc... Quit it. Your TL-WR1043ND is running a 400Mhz processor with 32Mb of memory.
That's basically all the advice I've got. Hope that get's the ball rolling on fixing this for you.

  • WRT54GC config to connect a wired-printer on existing wireless network

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me with the following issue :
    - I have an existing wireless network at home, set up with a wireless router/dsl connection
    - I now have been given a wired-printer, and I'd like to connect my printer to the existing wireless network, using a WRT54GC device.
I have been trying for a while, and I believe but can't manage to configure the device do this, and didn't find this in the forum yet.
As anyone already done this successfully ?
    Thank you

What is the make and model of your printer?  What type of connections does it have -- ethernet port?   USB port?  Parallel port?
If your printer has an ethernet port, you can wire it directly to your router.
If your printer has only a USB port, you will need a printer server such as the Linksys WPS54G, WPSM54G.    These devices will allow you to use the printer as a wired or wireless printer.  Both of these devices support USB 1.1 and USB 2.0
I do not recommend the Linksys PSUS4 (wired print server with 4 port switch), because it only supports USB 1.1

  • Constant latency and dropouts on wireless

I'm writing becuase I think I've exhausted all of the options I can come up with on my end. My problem started several months ago, but seems to be inconsistent. I often get bad latency spikes on wireless on my home network. I have a DOCSIS3 modem with a D-Link DIR645 router. This prolem has persisted through 3 different modems, and 4 different routers. I've checked my modem signal strength on the local network, and it seems to be within the acceptable thresholds on my end. I don't seem to have many problems when I'm wired (i've got a PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One direct wired), but I'm primarily using netflix, so I don't know that i'd notice small latency issues or infrequent dropouts. The problem seems to be much worse via wifi - I've been running a ping -t for the past 10 minutes or so, and these are my results:
        Packets: Sent = 2020, Received = 1942, Lost = 78 (3% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 9ms, Maximum = 3817ms, Average = 300ms I'm 20 feet from my router at the most. Signal strength is excellent in the bedroom and den. I've tried switching wifi channels, hopping channels, using static channels.. and nothing seems to resolve it. I do have a few other networks in the area, but nothing extreme (i'm in a 6 unit complex). It seems like if I have multiple things streaming at once (IE: netflix in the bedroom, standard browsing, or maybe some audio streams in the den) the problem gets even worse. I've got a buddy that's a tech that suggested I may have degradation in the lines before it gets to my condo. Every time I've called support I haven't got anywhere, as it looks like the signal is ok on their end. If anyone can help, or point me to a direction where someone had a similar problem, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks,John

I can't help but have exactly the same issue you describe and have done exactly the same things you did and problem persists. Just got the new latest and greatest modem from Comcast which promised to correct the problem. It didn't. It is very frustrating.

  • Wireless High Latency

    Hi All,
I have just setup a new WLAN using 5508 controllers (located in our HQ) and 3602I APs located in the branches configured in Flexconnect mode.
I created a basic WLAN with WPA2/AES/802.1X and wireless clients are seeing high latecny of 200ms and packet loss, this happens on both 2.4 and 5 with and without wireless N enabled. No significant interferance being reported on the APs or by cleanair. This happens on a range of wireless client devices and wireless adapters.
After lots of testing I noticed that disabling WMM on the WLAN dramatically reduces latency down to 2-3ms. Has anyone seen this behaviour before with 3602I clean air aps?

Here are some of my suggestions... your environment doesn't seem that high density, but you only provided me with only one of the WLC's in the mobility group, so I'm going off of this.
    Configure this:
    Data Rates 2.4 Band:
    1 Mbps: Disabled
    2 Mbps: Disabled
    5 Mbps: Disabled
    6 Mbps: Disabled
    9 Mbps: Disabled
    11 Mbps: Disabled
    12 Mbps: Disabled
    18 Mbps: Supported
    24 Mbps: Mandatory
    36 Mbps: Supported
    48 Mbps: Supported
    54 Mbps: Mandatory
Max TX power 2.4 Band: 17
Min TX power 2.4 Band: 11
    Data Rates 5.0 Band:
    6 Mbps: Disabled
    9 Mbps: Disabled
    12 Mbps: Disabled
    18 Mbps: Supported
    24 Mbps: Mandatory
    36 Mbps: Supported
    48 Mbps: Supported
    54 Mbps: Mandatory
Max TX power 5.0 Band: 17
Min TX power 5.0 Band: 11
After your wireless settles down a bit change the DCS to 24 hours
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • WRT54GC will not give wireless clients IP addresses

Hi, I'm here on a behalf of a friend. I'm working on a WRT54GC wireless router. The issue is that any wireless client wishing to connect to the router (after seeing the SSID) always fail at "Waiting for network" during the connection screen. However, wired clients are able to connect without any problems. I have updated the firmware to the latest one. No security features (WEP/WPA) are enabled. I have tried changing the channel and mode to no avail. MAC address filter is disabled. Wireless card drivers are up to date. I'd like to know what can be done to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance. -Keres

In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off the software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see it this helps.
Also, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
If you still have trouble, in the computer, go to the wireless adapter software, and go to "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ), and delete all the networks you find.  Reboot computer.  Then return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your unique network SSID, and set it to "automatic login".  Reboot computer.  You should connect automatically.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.

  • WRT54GC connection to other wireless router

    Hi,
I have a cable modem/router (Thomson TWG850-4U) with wireless function connected to distribute internet. Wireless laptop works ok.
I would like to connect my PC to the above modem (to internet) using WRT54GC (no direct cable connection feasible). Is it possible? If so, how should I set both routers to connect wireless?
e.g: the same channel or not, is IP important ... Thomson has WDS enabled with Linksys MAC address as remote bridge entered.
Have no idea how to do it... pls help

    Thomson IP: 192.168.0.1
I want to connect TV with RJ only to internet. Don't want a wire connection since it is on the other side of the house. Cannot connect Thomson close to TV since fixed line phone is connected to Thomson. So the solution with only one router would be to bring wire either from TV to Thomson where it is now, or bring phone wire to Thomson if it was connected close to TV...
    Complex...
That's why I wonder whether it is possible to connect wireless my TV to Thomson using WRT54GS which I have, and don't use now. If it could work as wifi card would solve my problem
