WRT54GL making wireless bridge to router with internet

i have a wrt54GL router, firmware 4.3.7 (latest european)  i wanna make a wireless bridge to a non linksys router. the helpdesk wasn't very helpfull( i think a first-day employee.)  i have found this:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
but then i have to update the firmware which isnt supported'.
Does somebody know how to do this?
my wishlist:
1) router makes connection to other router. and uses the samen network
2) my router also works still as an access point

i flashed it with 3rd party firmware like the dd-wrt. Al whole kind of options becomes available. i can now select a client-bridge modus and see the other wireless networks. did the tutorial on the above site. my router keeps on blinking, i thought oh now now its broken. but after holding the reset button for 30 seconds it becomes alive again. and then i update the final generic-dd-wrt firmware
process: backup router-->firmware dd-wrt mini---->firmware dd-wrt standard-->backup router--> follow steps mentioned in the wiki pages on dd-wrt

  • Trouble getting Dlink DWL-G820 wireless bridge to work with wrt610n

I'm trying to get some dlink wireless bridges to work with wrt610n, but not having any luck.  I left Wrt610n router with default "192.168.1.1" IP address and configured bridges accordingly with "192.168.1.xxx" adresses.
Wireless bridges not happy.  Any ideas ?  The bridges were working fine when i was using "192.168.0.xxx" ip addresses with wrt610n
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well I'll give you full points for reading my question, but zero points for quality of answer.  If it was that simple I would have done it.
Unfortunately circumstances have changed and I have both a 192.168.0.xxx LAN & 192.168.1.xxx LAN now and the DWL-G820 (Dlink) wireless bridges must be part of the 192.168.1.xxx LAN (WRT610N Linksys router).  For some reason they won't work when I configure them to be part of a 192.168.1.xxx LAN.
I'm beginning to think it's a diabolical plot by either Linksys or Dlink to prevent each other's equipment from working together.

  • Need Help using WRT54GL as Wireless Bridge for Xbox

    Hi.
I need help configuring my WRT54GL as a wireless bridge for my xbox.
I have a Billion BiPAC 7404VGO currently in service as my main router/modem. i.e. I have my ADSL connection and PC connected to this. I also connect to this with a laptop.
I have an original xbox at the other end of the house (cat5 NOT an option).
Basically I want to connect my xbox to the rest of network. I have a WRT54GL I can use for this. I just dont know how to set it up.
The WRT54GL has Firmware Version: v4.30.7 (out of the box).
My Wireless network is using WPA.
I have a VPN setup through to work via the Billion.
The idea is to stream media from my PC to the xbox (media centre).
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

A wireless router is a device which requires its own wired internet connection. A wireless router is not a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs. A wireless router does not connect wireless to other wireless routers/APs with standard Linksys firmware. With Linksys firmware you need a WAP54G or similar. The WAPs support wireless bridging and repeater mode.
If you already have a WRT54GL then you have to install a 3rd party firmware which adds wireless bridging capabilities. Read the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for information about which WRT models support 3rd party firmware and an overview of projects and links.
Remember, however, that you may brick your router if you install a 3rd party firmware incorrectly and you probably void the warranty if you install 3rd party firmware (it is even possible to find out after you restore the original Linksys firmware if you don't clear the NVRAM before).

  • Setting up a netgear n300 as wireless bridge/access point with airport extremee

I just replaced my netgear wireless router with the airport to allow our many devices on the network without knocking each other off and also increase the speed.  But would like to use the netgear as a wireless bridge or access point so that I can still connect my NTFS formatted hard drive to be shared on the network.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I can not seem to find my netgear router with 192.168.1.1 as that comes up with another device.  I have tried doing this with a windows laptop in another room but can not seem to make it work.  I am now hooked up directly to the airport thinking i need to do it that way and still no luck. Please help.

As long as you intend to do this over ethernet it will work.. you cannot easily wireless repeat or bridge to an apple router.. you would need specific hardware to do it.
What is the exact model of netgear you have?
The setup method depends on the functionality of the router.. but lets assume it does not have a bridge or WAP mode.
    You use WAN bypass.
    1. Setup the Netgear with IP address in the correct IP range for the rest of the network.. it is hard to talk generalities so lets say the apple is main router and your network is now 10.0.1.x .. then set the Netgear to 10.0.1.250 (apple uses IP 2-200 by default) you can use any value you like outside the DHCP range. Up to the limit which is 254 as long as you keep track of all static IP devices. Apply this setting and power cycle the router.. and you might need to power cycle the computer as well to pick up the new IP.
    2. Turn off the DHCP server in the Netgear. You may lose connection to the netgear now.. do not worry about it.. (this can be combined with one.. if you firstly turn off dhcp before you change the IP.. but whatever is possible.. at some point you will need to change around and if you forget what IP .. you will be in a mess.. so write it on a label and stick on the base of the router.. also without dhcp you will either need to reset router to factory using reset button or use static ip on the computer. )
    3. Plug ethernet from LAN of the main router to LAN of the Netgear. Reboot the whole network is often necessary.
    4. In your computer plugged somewhere in the network.. open browser and go to the address you set.. 10.0.1.250 in my example.
    5. You can then setup the Netgear to do whatever you like.. DIsk access is fine.. wireless is fine.. it just cannot be a router.
Many many reboots if you get lost. Hit reset and start over.

  • Wireless non-cisco router with aironet 1242 repeater.

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie here. I just started learning about cisco devices. Sorry if my question seems stupid.
I have a problem. A friend gave me an AP aironet 1242 and he wants to use it as a repeater for his wireless non cisco router.
Is this possible? And if it is how can i do it with simple steps.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick response Scott. I 've read this quide before i post.
The problem is that i can't connect with serial to the ap. So i can't use commands.
I can connect with ethernet and see the ap interface. When i go and make the radio0 work as a repeater it shows interface down. What i want is simple steps of how to configure it from the interface.
    Sorry again.

  • Problems with 3 Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster

I bought 3 Wireless-G  Broadband Routers with speedboost.
They all had problems.  After buying a second one,  I figured the first one had a defect.  Then I had more problems.   Is this just more bad luck? Then I bought the third one, and still had problems, especially with the program it had me install on the pcs I had at home.  It just wouldn't keep a connection.  Then, most of the time I had to restart the router..  Shame, I thought to myself... I wondered if linksys knew about this router and its problems..   I even tried to upgrade the firmware, and it only had problems after that on one of the routers.  I just got a complaint from one of my friends about the router.  I had a feeling I knew what it was once she told me the problem it had.  Then I asked her the type a router it was. "Linksys" she told me and I told her my story with 3 bad routers. . It was weird..
Oh, well, hopefully linksys will look it up and see what is up with the product.  Buying the 3 same routers and them not working was a little weird.  At least it wasn't working the way it should have.
That is all from me..  I know this is a serious post, so reply all that want to.

What you want to do is set up your wireless security.  The routers setup page
(192.168.1.1) can only be accessed IF someone can get on your wireless network first.  Of course, you want to change this password to something other than 'admin' anyway.  This you can do by accessing the administration tab in the setup pages of the router by going here to see how it is done.
Now, you want to secure your wireless network by going here.

  • Need wireless bridge to go with my wrt600n, any suggestions?

    hi,
i need to add 2 additional wireless ports into my home entertainment system, and need to add a device that i can bridge to my wrt600n.
i currently have a wap54g running as a bridge, but with the addition of a xbox 360 elite, i now need another port and don't want another device.
a quick check of the linksys site and the newere devices manuals make it appear that this function has been pulled in the newer releases of firmware?
    does anyone have any suggestions?
ideally i'd like the new device to be a wireless G (N is not necesssary, but it's ok if it's N), support WPA2 (personal ok, AES is pref), be running the linksys firmware for ease of mgmt. , and be energy star certified.
    Thnx

With my setup the WRT610N assigns addresses to those other devices.  In the WRT610N setup you can assign specific IP addresses to specific MAC addresses via the following:
    - Log into the WRT610N setup via going to http://192.168.x.x
    - Under Setup -> Basic Setup go to DHCP Server Setting and click on the DHCP Reservation button
    - A popup window appears which has an option under Manually Add Client to Enter Client Name and Assign IP Address to To This MAC Address
I just checked the WRT600N User Guide and it also has this feature.  Here's a link to the user guide and check pages 5 and 8 for more info.
    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheadername1=Content-Type&blobheadername...
    Using your previous example ...
    Juniper NS5Gt -> WRT600N : with following config
    WRT600N
Assign IP address 192.168.1.10 to PS3 MAC address
Assign IP address 192.168.1.11 to Xbox Elite MAC address
    Keep DHCP for Denon Receiver
    WRT600N -> WET200 : with following config
    WET200
    Port 1 connected to PS3
Port 2 connected to Xbox Elite
Port 3 connected to Denon Receiver
With the WET200 you can also assign a specific MAC address to a specific port.

  • What kind of wireless bridge would work with Toshiba Regza HDTV & Toshiba Blu-ray DVD Player?

What will provide wi-fi to Toshiba DVD player connecting using an ethernet cable, giving an internet connection.
    gholmes1936

Thank you for this answer. I have another clarifying question for you as I am a wet behind the ears newbie at this. Does this mean that my 2 Wire DSL modem will be acting as the router that you mention? If yes, it would seem that this would also allow me to watch NetFlix movies from my computer on my Toshiba HDTV-correct possibly?

Well when you first get ready to connect that new router to your ISP modem, turn off the modem for at least 5 minutes. First power on you router then connect the port from the modem to the WAN (Wide Area Network) port of the router. At this point connect to the router via Ethernet and log into that router (look into the router's manual how to do that) and make sure it's getting an IP from the ISP modem. After you confirmed the router gets an IP from the modem then at this point you can setup the wireless & security. Just make sure all your devices that use wireless can use security and the highest use the highest security all those devices can use.
Lastly try to connect to the router's wireless network (while still connected via Ethernet so you can check the router to make sure it sees the your Mac). If it does then you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and then the wireless (Airport card) should take over the connection.

  • Need Help With Wireless Bridging

Hello all, I have recently perchased high speed WiFi for my house so I could do some gaming on my Xbox. Problem is my roommate, who is a tech support professional, set the modem up in his bedroom, my Xbox is old and requires a wireless adapter to pick up signals but since the modem is so far away from it it barely recieves the signal. So currently I'm paying for nothing so I confronted him about this issue and he attempted to fix it by wirelessly bridging a router to the modem but after a month he hasn't succeeded and has given up so now it's up to me and I have no clue where to even begin. The modem we have is a Cisco DPC3825 and the router is a NetGear Wireless-N Router WVR2000 V2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Denver: I did not actually understand what kind of bridging you want to do?
The modem already has a wireless transmitter. I think you mean the router is picking up the wireless signal and provide the xbox with connectivity via wired cable. is that right?
If correct, It looks like the issue is with the distance/barriers between your modem and router. You need to try to eliminate some barriers in between to get better signl. Try also to put the devices as close as possible to each other.

Will this router works with the system we now have?

Yes it will work fine with the Cable Connection ...if you want to use Phone service you need to contact the Earthlink .... voice service provider ...

  • I have a TC which is connected wirelessly to my router.  I would like to connect a mac in another location via ethernet to the TC.  I can't seem to get it to connect.  Am I missing something?

I have a virgin Superhub which serves my wireless needs throughout the house.  I have a Timecapsule which connects wirelessly to the router with no issues.  I can backup my MBP over wireless easily.  I have now got another machine in a different part of the house that I would like to connect to the network.  It doesn't have wireless so ethernet is the only option.  I have a number of options 1) run cabling - not really possible  2) buy a powerline network system or 3) use the timecapsule to connect to the network/internet.
    I like option 3 because
    (a) - I don't have to spend any more money and
    (b) - my wife wont complain about cables also see (a)
Should using mixed wifi and ethernet clients on a timecapsule work?  if so is it a feature I can use out of the box so to speak?
    Thanks

No a TC cannot do what you want.. it is now in dumb stupid wireless join mode.. and it turns off the ethernet ports.. in case you want to use the TC as a wireless bridge to multiple clients which is plainly wrong.. (only airport express is allowed to do this since it has only one ethernet port).
Welcome to Apple. (The plainly wrong above is a figment of Apple imagination.. of strict network protocols.. but unhelpful for a home device. maybe also to encourage sales of expresses.)

  • Using linksys wired router with AE 2nd generation

Hi. I'm trying to use a linksys befsr41 (non-wireless 4 port router) with a 2nd generation airport express. I have several wired rooms that I want to setup separate networks with other AE's. My configuration is:  cable box-->AE WAN in--AE LAN out-->Linksys-->ethernet cable through the house—>AE WAN in rooms. Can’t seem to make this work. I can do it wirelessly (i.e having the remote AE's joing the first AE network) but several of the rooms have poor signal. As soon as I try and create a new network the remote AE’s can’t connect to the network. I checked the cables and they are all good.
    Thanks.

We need some additional information to be able to troubleshoot this issue.
Can you provide the make and model number of the cable modem that you are using?
Are the other AirPort Express devices that you are trying to connect also 2nd Gen versions?  If not, what version are they?
The Linksys router needs to be configured to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will function as if it were an Ethernet switch.....not a router.  Is the Linksys set up in Bridge Mode at the current time?
Looking at the Linksys support forum....example below......I cannot tell whether it is possible to configure the Linksys product in Bridge Mode:
    https://community.linksys.com/t5/Wired-Routers/Use-BEFSR41-in-Bridged-Mode/td-p/ 272061
Are you trying to configure the AirPorts using AirPort Utility on a Mac....or on an iPhone / iPad?  If you are using a Mac, what operating system is the Mac running?  If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X  version that you see there.

  • Wireless 3g linksys router

Hi all, i have a wireless linksys 3g router with the firmware update 2.10.17, i updated from the old firmware. I have a security system installed at home and i want to access it remotely. i.e from a computer outside of the LAN. I have set up most of the things necessary so that  this is possible - port forwarding, dyndns etc. BUT, I can not access the router externally when set on "Remote Management"... at all. I want to know if there is any settings or restrictions that prevents external access of the router. I was told something about APN restrictions by our service provider. Any help please?

    Who is your ISP?
Login to the Router setup page and click on the Status tab and check the Internet IP address.
If you wish to access your computer from the Remote location then you can access it by using Remote Desktop Connection. For that you need to open the RDC Port on your Router..
To open RDP Port on your Router follow this link .
Once you are done with all the settings, on your computer click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - Then click on "Remote Desktop Connection"  and in that window type the WAN IP address (Which you will get under the Routers Status Tab).
Eg: Under RDC type : Wan IP:3389 and then click on Connect. If you want to access your computer from the Remote Location... and you should be able to access your computer
