WRT54GL to WRT54GL as repeater

Hi, I finally got my WAP11 eliminated and set up a WRT54GL for better security with the WPA and MAC filtering. This creates some questions. 1. I purchased a second WRT54GL in hopes of using it as a repeater. I can't find directions to do so. I found info on using a WRT54G to do this; but the menu on the GL does not seem to support this. Can I do this? If not, which hardware would I use to maintain the WPA security? 2. I could not get it to work with the self-install method on the CD. I have a Speadstream 4200 router for DSL service with Windstream. When I tried to hook that through the GL, it seemed to work then did not. Maybe it was when I had the DHCP set, but I switched to fixed IP. So, I have a small network set up through a switch and just put the GL into that as well as the 4200 and used my fixed IP addresses for my machines and it worked fine. In the GL user's manual for the static IP addresses, it has "Internet IP Address". I did not know what to put there. It seems not to matter the way I have it set up now. Maybe I needed something from Windstream there. Is that the number that the 4200 shows as "PPoE 0/35" then an IP number? Should I leave well enough alone or is there a reason to run the 4200 through the GL? I don't know alot - just enough to be dangerous!

Should work. Have a look at

  • Will WRT54GL act as repeater for WRT54GL??

Im having trouble getting my WAP54g to speak with my wrt54gl. And the wrt54g is not available to purchase were i live, only the wrt54gl. So im thinking if the wrt54gl will speak flawlessly with another wrt54gl as repeater? Then i will buy another wrt54gl and flush the wap54gs down the toilet.
    thanks

There is no way to set a 2nd WRT54GL as an Repeater. So you can buy 1 WRT54GL and a Range Expander WRE54G, As WRE54G is a Wireless Repeater and it will be best for your Network and it will solve your purpose.

  • WRT54GL will loose internet after adding WAP54g as repeater

I have had a WRT54GL router in a production env working fine. Last week I had to add a WAP54G to repeat the signal. Now the wireless network goes down around every hour and the only way to fix it is to reset it. I have the latest firmware on both devices and the only thing I changed int he router last week was the security type from WPA2 to WEP to get the access point to talk to the router. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to disconnect or power off the WAP54G and check if you will still get the same problem. If the same issue is experienced, you may need to reset the router and reconfigure the settings. If the connection is stable without the WAP54G then it might be the cause of the problem. What is the hardware version of your WAP54G? I think even with the version 1, there is an option for WPA Personal or WPA Pre Shared Key which is much better than using WEP. • Need Help using WRT54GL as Wireless Bridge for Xbox

    Hi.
I need help configuring my WRT54GL as a wireless bridge for my xbox.
I have a Billion BiPAC 7404VGO currently in service as my main router/modem. i.e. I have my ADSL connection and PC connected to this. I also connect to this with a laptop.
I have an original xbox at the other end of the house (cat5 NOT an option).
Basically I want to connect my xbox to the rest of network. I have a WRT54GL I can use for this. I just dont know how to set it up.
The WRT54GL has Firmware Version: v4.30.7 (out of the box).
My Wireless network is using WPA.
I have a VPN setup through to work via the Billion.
The idea is to stream media from my PC to the xbox (media centre).
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

A wireless router is a device which requires its own wired internet connection. A wireless router is not a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs. A wireless router does not connect wireless to other wireless routers/APs with standard Linksys firmware. With Linksys firmware you need a WAP54G or similar. The WAPs support wireless bridging and repeater mode.
If you already have a WRT54GL then you have to install a 3rd party firmware which adds wireless bridging capabilities. Read the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for information about which WRT models support 3rd party firmware and an overview of projects and links.
Remember, however, that you may brick your router if you install a 3rd party firmware incorrectly and you probably void the warranty if you install 3rd party firmware (it is even possible to find out after you restore the original Linksys firmware if you don't clear the NVRAM before).

  • Server Error in '/' Application. WRT54GL Mangling traffic?

Okay, here goes.  Maybe someone can help me understand this behavior and what I might be able to do to fix it.
I run both wired and wireless at home, a netgear 10/100/1000 workgroup switch in my room for multiple PC's and a fileserver.  Connected directly to a WRT54GL.  Which is connected to one other PC, and provides wireless service for 2 Laptops, a PSP, a DS, and a few other devices.  So, here's the issue.  This linksys is relatively new (picked it up less than a month ago.)
A few random sites, I come across an error basically stating "Server error in '/' application."  One fine example is http://www.ntreev.net (a site that provides a game service i actively play.)
This is the most prominent, as I used to regularly visit that site.  Now, since installing my WRT54GL, I can't even visit the site without that error.  Luckily, I still have the forums/etc bookmarked.  But any account maintenance, logging in, or even trying to view the updates for games, all result in that error.   For the curious, here's what I have tried so far... :
Turn off SPI/Firewall protection : Still no go.
Filter NAT Redirection : No go.
Disable all VPN/IPSEC passthru (of course not entirely relevent) : No go.
Add my PC to DMZ and disable anything for my NAT ip : Nope there too.
Plug directly into the router, bypassing the netgear 10/100/1000 switch in my room. : Nope ...
Rebooting all of the network equipment, and PC's still cause the behavior.
Laptop on wireless or wired directly to the router : Nope ... I'm seeing a pattern here.
Remove router entirely, plug PC directly into Surfboard cable modem.  It works perfectly.
What is this router doing to my outgoing web traffic that's causing this.  I dropped 50$ on something that is mangling traffic and I've no way to fix it.  I've upgraded to the latest firmware, and it did nothing to help me.  All that did was cause me to have to set up mac filters for the wireless(again,) and more.
I've been playing with options here and there for 2 weeks, in combination, to see if there's anything I can do to remedy this, but it's all a no go.
Anyone have any ideas that may help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris
(Just a note :  I tried my old netgear, and it worked fine, only problem with that is it locks up regularly, and loses settings on restart/power cycles, so I replaced it with a fairly well reviewed box.  So I know its not my switch, and its not my cable modem, nor any part of my network, except the WRT54GL... as things work without it in the equation.)

    Hello,
Thanks for the reply (again,) and sorry I couldn't get back here for a while...
I couldn't do this for a while because I had exams and projects online that I absolutely had to finish this week, so last night I broke down and decided to look at things a bit more.
I went ahead and reflashed it with the current (latest) firmware,  directly from : http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54GL/download , chose my version, 1.1 and installed it.
I reset my router, repeatedly already, but did it once more.  I didn't configure all of my options, but got it online at least.  (Didn't want to bother entering all the mac addresses for wireless access again at the moment.)
Same behavior,  I am starting to really get frustrated with this as anytime I want visit this site (which is quite a bit ...), I have to go unplug my modem, unplug my router, plug my PC's network cable directly in the modem, and plug it back in, in which case I can get to it just fine.  Then when I'm done and have no need to be on that site for a while, I can put everything back normally.  But for any account maintenance, web based stuff (games, etc), and more on there, I have to physically remove my linksys from the network in order for it to function.
I am seriously at a loss with this, as it's been more than 30 days since I've bought this network problem (my WRT54GL), and therefore can't return it now.  Anyone have any more ideas/options ?
    Thanks

  • WRE54G WRT54GL IP Conflict

Network has a WRT54GL wireless router, WRE54G wireless range expander, a WMP54G PCI wireless desktop adapter and the occasional Dell and HP laptops.  All Linksys products have the current firmware versions.  DHCP is enabled.  I keep getting error messages about an IP conflict with another device on the system.  When I look at the event viewer I see that it is always the WRE54G that is in conflict, usually with the desktop.  I guess I don't understand TCP/IP well enough, but doesn't the WRE have a .240 address?  Why does it keep hopping on the same one (.101, .102, etc) as the desktop.  What can I do to fix this situation?  The error balloons are quite annoying and the users of this network (my bosses) don't really want to force a new IP each time it happens.  Please help!  Thanks!

I have a similar experiment going on, with an additional problem, AND another variable in the mix....
    Here's my setup:
-in my square, I live in an apartment with DSL, and my WRT54GL...
(2 wired computers here, Win XP)
-halfway across the square, in my girlfriend's apartment, I setup a WRE54G repeater  (2 wireless computers here, Win XP)
-On the other end is my office, with a WET200 bridge
(here I have my office computer, with Win 2003 Server, "wired" to the WET200)
**This is all working "somewhat" ok for all the wired computers, and hit and miss for wireless.
    1) I get the IP conflict as described in the thread above, on my office computer.  I have setup static DHCP for all the computers on the network, AND am sure no IP's are really in conflict.
This seems to result in my office computer having trouble reaching some services at times, such as my network printer (also static DHCP)
**even when I manually assign static IPs on my office computer and printer
    2) When I try to use my new laptop wirless from home (near the WRT54GL), it always ends up hopping to the repeater, which is farther away, and weak signal, AND can't get a DHCP address.
**I would really like to have a proper resolution to this problem, so that I can design viable/reliable network solutions for my business clients.  Right now I avoid wireless solutions whenever possible, because they are almost always a headache in some  way...

  • WRT54GL having network stability issues in Windows 7

    Hi!
I'm currently evaluating moving to Windows 7 Bits (currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit from MSDN) on a stationary test computer (AMD X3, 8 GB ram, etc...).
I've got 2 Ubuntu 64-bit machines on an gigabit LAN, and an Tvix media player running fine all attached to a D-Link DGS-1005D gigabitswitch that is attached to a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 router with a 10/10 Mbit internet WAN. I am NOT using any wireless connection other than very seldom for an iPhone or when installing/supporting/servicing other peoples laptops.
My test computer is running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit with excellent performance but booting to windows 7 ultimate gives me strange network problems. I first tried the built in gigabit lan on this computer but then tried changing into using a D-Link DGE-528T gigabit lan controller (gives better performance when the network is actually up). I have also tried windows xp 32-bits which worked perfectly..
    Back to windows 7...
The funny animated new network diagnostics center seems to always pinpoint that it is my router that isn't working although all my other computers are running fine at the same time. I'm am at this point unable to access http-admin for the router from the w7 computer (fully accessible from linux though). Scanning through the web I've tryed a feew tips with no final solution:
    * Disabling IP6 protocol (less problems after that)
    * Limiting the network load for my primary linuxserver (might actually have also lessened the problems).
    * Tried with and without QoS on the WRT54GL router.
    * Tried disabling the QoS service on the network card in Windows 7.
    * Tried a few pointers from: http://speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574
      *  According to my reading, this one was the primary candidate for fixing my problem: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
    * I've upgrade my Tomato firmware to v1.25.
If I simply wait long enough the network problems seems to disapear by it self. But then at a non repeatable time pattern the internet connection via the router is lost again.
I've not tried DD-WRT and some people have suggested that it would solve the problem but no one has pinpointed exactly what in the DD-WRT firmware solves this.
I'm currently laughing about the suggestion from the windows 7 suggestion to look after a router with a sticker saying "Compatible with Windows 7".
Anyone got any pointers on this? I'm afraid I need at least one windows, preferably one supporting 64-bits due to my memory needs and I simply love my LINKSYS WRT54GL since it is the only router I have ever owned that NEVER has failed (and therefore is the only one I'm recommending to other people also needing 24/7 remote access capability from outside their own network).
    Best regards
    Thomas

    Tnx for quick reply!
I've tried disabling the anti-virus (AVAST) and also disabled the windows 7 firewall (actually disabled the built in software firewall before - forgott it in the list above!).
I've also today tried both letting my WRT54GL assign a static IP (192.168.1.110) and normal DHCP (192.168.1.103). Both seems to work but the network is stil lost at random intervall that seems to happen more often if my network load through the router is higher.
When Win7 thinks the network is down it is not possible to ping the router (192.168.1.1) from win 7 but my linux computer has no problems doing that (and happily keeps using the net).
    Strange this...

  • WRT54GL frequently drops WAN connection

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with my WRT54GL 1.1 router, namely it has a nasty habit of dropping WAN DSL connection. Firstly I attributed this to modem, but my ISP's tech support sent me a list of connection resets that are caused by the router not the modem. This happens about 20x a day, lasts for about 20 sec, then reconnect, works fine for a while and the whole cycle is repeated again. As you can imagine it is very frustrating.
I have the router upgraded to firmware rev. 4.30.11 and am using router's DHCP server.
Also: before you suggest it - I have connected my IskraTel Ganymede 822+ DSL modem directly to my PC and the connection is completely stable.
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.
    With kind regards,
    Bostjan Ursic

It is difficult to be sure from the documentation, but it appears that your "DSL modem"  is actually a "DSL modem router", and it uses the same 192.168.1.x  subnet as the WRT54GL.
To fix your problem, you will need to make one or more changes.  First, power down your entire network, then disconnect the WRT54GL from your modem.  Then wire one computer to a LAN port on the WRT54GL, and login to the WRT54GL.  Change the "Local IP address" to 192.168.2.1   Then click the "Save Settings" button and wait (3 to 60 seconds) for the screen to refresh.  You will likely be disconnected from the WRT54GL.  This is normal, so do not worry about that.  Power down your entire network.
Next, using an ethernet cable, connect one of the LAN ports on the "modem"  to the Internet port of the WRT54GL.   Boot up your system.  Did this correct the problem?
If you still have problems, please post the following info:
    1)  What "Internet Connection Type" is the WRT54GL set to?
    2)  Is the DHCP server turned on in the 822+ modem?   (Note:  I assume that the DHCP server is turned on in the WRT54GL.)

  • RE1000 nightmare when trying to estabilish a connection to WRT54GL

    Hello.
I have a big problem with a brand new RE1000 I received today.
I unpacked it, plugged into power socket and began manual configuration over the Ethernet cable. And then the nightmare began...
But, before I start describing the problem - first some facts.
I have a WRT54GL router and several computers and printers connected to it, mostly via WiFi.
All machines have static IPs. DHCP is disabled. WiFi G-Only network is protected with WPA2-Personal (AES) security and broadcasts on channel 5 (2.432GHz). Normally I have MAC filter enabled, but I disabled it temporarily for the installation of the range expander.
The network is 192.168.0.0/27 with router using 192.168.0.1. Half of IP addresses from the pool are free.
Now, with my laptop, I configured RE1000 to use the first free static IP, which is 192.168.0.16. Set a proper submask of 255.255.255.224, gateway - to router's address (192.168.0.1), and addresses of both DNSs.
With all that set up, I've manually entered the wireless network information: my network SSID, WPA2-Personal AES and a passphrase.
But RE1000 won't connect to the network no matter what I do. It just says "Connecting" every time it auto-refreshes the page and after a while it simply says Down.
I've also tried to connect using the Site Survey, but with the same result.
In the logs I found this repeated message
    [327] syslog: [INFO]WL_STA_AUTHO fail, f=4008
Wireless network signal is superman strong. RE1000 is located in the same room as router, about 3 meters from him.
There's absolutely no way I can make RE1000 to connect to my WRT54GL router (v.1.1 with Firmware Version: v4.30.16). I've lost several hours trying to make it work.
Has someone had any luck in estabilishing connection between those two CISCO products?
Or maybe my RE1000 unit is broken? I'm seriously considering sending it back.

Okay. I've tried everything. Reinstalling the firmware, resetting, moving RE1000 one meter closer to WRT54GL, disabling network security, enabling DHCP, changing router channels. Absolutely everything. And still this junk won't connect to the router. This is ridiculous.

  • Use WRP400 (VoIP Router) for Voice only, and the rest with WRT54GL

Hey there, I hope you are doing great!
The reason of this thread is because I recently moved to a cable ISP and unfortunately had to also change routers in order to take advantage of the VoIP feature (analog phone) they provided me with.
Now, the new router, the WRP400, is very limited feature-wise compared to the custom flashed WRT54GL I used to use with my DSL provider.
Now the WRT54GL does not have any FXS ports, so I obviously can't just plug my cable modem to the WRT54GL. Therefore, I was hoping to achieve a setup similar to this one:
Cable modem => VoIP Router w/ voice only (WRP400) => "Main" router (WRT54GL w/ Tomato)
Is there a way to bridge the WRP400 successfully with the WRT54GL keeping only the voice feature enabled on the VoIP router while the WRT54GL takes care of the rest? (Wireless, WAN, port forwarding, etc)
Thank you very much for your help, and have an awesome day!
    Lev

I am going to provide a few snapshots of the config pages as to make this easier:

Once more, thank you very much for the assistance!

  • VPN in a local network connected to another free network (wrt54gl)

    Hi,
The schem is the next: I want to connect my laptop to my house local network throught VPN, in my house I have another router that will be connected in a free network throught an antenna.
I would be interested in mount a VPN and see the free network and navigate throught it, I have a linksys wrt54gl with no usage now. ¿How can I do this? ¿How?
PD. Nowdays i don't have the anntena connected to the free network, but I projected it for connecting in few weeks.

    Thanks!

This forum site is totally dedicated for Linksys devices not using 3rd party firmware Like Tomato and DDWRT. So it would be better if you post your query in on this other site. http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?forums/tomato-firmware.33/
Hopefully, somebody can help you with your network setup.

  • Added WRT54GL to Roadrunner, no internet, I've tried everything!

I installed my Linksys wireless router to my Roadrunner connection so I can get all of my 3 computers online. I can hook one computer directly to the modem and of course it can get online, but I get nothing with the router added into the mix. I've searched here and on other forums for at least a week trying to get this to work, but no luck. I know this topic gets brought up A LOT so I apologize, but I promise I've searched before making a new thread and none of the solutions are working.
    Quick overview:
WRT54GL wireless router (Tomato 1.21 firmware)
    Motorola SURFboard SB5101 modem
    - Modem -> router WAN port
    - router WAN port set to DHCP
    - MTU set to 1500
    - Router IP 192.168.1.1 (default)
    - Modem IP 192.168.100.1 (default)
    - LAN set for DHCP (range 192.168.1.100-253 *255.255.255.0)
    - router Ethernet port 1 -> Host (only 1 comp connected at the moment)
    - Computer set to DHCP
    - Cloned computer's MAC address to WAN
As long as I power up the modem first and then the router, the WAN will connect just like it should using the IP/Subnet/DNS/etc supplied by the modem. The weirdest part is that I can bring up the console for both the router and the modem, and I can also ping the modem... so everything appears to be set up properly on my end, but for whatever reason I simply can't get outside of the modem to the internet. In fact when I try to go to a website like google.com for example the browser says "Waiting for google.com..." You'd think that if there really was a problem getting to the internet it would say "Looking up google.com", but maybe not, whatever. I know for sure that I don't have any software/settings on my PC messing things up.
Here's the basic steps I used to set everything up:
    1. Connect modem to WAN port and computer to Ethernet port 1
    2. Set router WAN port to DHCP, Save
    3. Manually set WAN's MTU to 1500, Save
    4. Clone PC's MAC address to WAN, Save
    5. Set LAN ports to DHCP, Save
    6. Power down modem, router, and PC... let sit for a few minutes.
    7. Power up modem, wait until completely done
    8. Power up router, wait until completely done
    9. Power up PC, enable LAN connection
At this point the WAN settings in the router's console show the proper MAC, IP, subnet, gateway, DNS's, and MTU. As I said before, I can successfully ping the modem and bring up the modem's console so there's obviously no problem communicating to the modem...it just won't let me out on the internet!
Think it has something to do with the LAN's subnet being 255.255.255.0 and the WAN/modem being 255.255.252.0? Do they both need to use the same subnet mask or does it even matter? Do the first 3 octets of all the IP's on the network need to be the same with just the last octet being unique?
Aside from that stuff I'm all out of ideas... I got this exact setup working with my previous cable ISP (non-Roadrunner/Time Warner) with almost no configuration at all and I'm seriously about to go to another ISP if I cant get this to work.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks folks.
(and also thanks for reading this rather long post )

  • Router WRT54GL with Windows Vista

    Greetings,
We just bought two Dell E520 computers that will come pre loaded with Windows Vista OS. I also have a WRT54GL router still fresh in the box and un opened.
When we receive our new computers we want to use our new WRT54GL router with the two new desktops hard wired into the WRT54GL router.
Will the CD that came with this new router be able to run on Windows Vista?
If the CD will not run on Windows how should I go about setting up my two new computers to use the router?
I want to use these two new Dell E520 computers hard wired in to the new WRT54GL.
I have two laptops that are wireless capabel. I would like to use these two laptop computers in their wireless mode.
How do I go about setting up the new Dells that will be hard wired in to the WRT54GL modem if I cannot run the CD First on Window Vista as the instructions says that I should run the CD first before I plug in the two new Dell desktops into the router.
I hope these comments are clear and understandable. Please ask for more information if needed.
Thanks in advance for your help and understanding.
    Leigh

    Thanks,
Can I use the Linksys CD that came with the router. On the CD it says Run CD First. Can this disk run on Windows Vista?
If not do I need to somewhere on Linksys site to download a new disk?
Thanks for your support and help.

  • How to configure network printer with Linksys WRT54GL router network

I just bought a Linksys WRT54GL router and I am planning to build the following home-network around it:
    1. A desktop computer connected to router via ethernet cable (hard-wired).
    2. An HP Network Printer (Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP) connected to router via ethernet cable (hard-wired).
    3. A notebook connected to router via Wi-Fi.
I want both computers (desktop and notebook) to be able to share files, and also to share the same network printer.
    a. How do I do this?
    b. Do I need to install the printer drivers in both computers as if the printer was local for each one?
    c. What settings do I need to include in the Linksys router settings (and also the printer settings) to allow all this? I've read on the internet about DHCP configs, IP address, etc. but I hardly understand anything.
A step-by-step ("for dummies") explanation will be extremely appreciated.

You will need to install the printer driver on each computer that will be using the printer.  You will need to have a printer driver that is designed to be used on a network.   Many of HP's drivers (but not all of them) can be used for either a USB or a network connection.
Usually, when you use HP's printer installation software, it will walk you through the printer installation procedure, and install the printer drivers.  This software is normally located on a CD that came with the printer.  Some installation software demands that you setup a USB connection first, then switch to a network connection.  Other installation software might install a network connection directly.  Just follow the HP directions.
There are no special settings in the router.  Simply wire (using an ethernet cable) your printer to a LAN port on the router, when the installation software (or instructions) tells you to do so.
Your printer will likely get a different LAN IP address (192.168.1.x )  from time to time.  Some printer drivers can handle this and still work properly.  Other printer drivers get confused, and cannot find your printer when it changes addresses.  If your driver has this problem, then you will need to assign your printer a fixed LAN IP address.  This will force the printer to have the same LAN IP address each time you boot up your network.   If you need to do this, you will need to enter the LAN IP address directly into your printer (Sometimes this is done using the printer's buttons and display panel, and sometimes this is done using HP printer software).  Note that any fixed LAN IP address must be outside your DHCP server range (defaults are 192.168.1.100  thru  192.168.1.149 ) , and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.  If you need to use a fixed LAN IP address, I would suggest you use 192.168.1.13 , which should be easy to remember by looking at the model number of your printer.   If you need to use a fixed LAN IP address, you will also need to enter the Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway 192.168.1.1 , and DNS Server 192.168.1.1 , into your printer.   If you use a fixed LAN IP address in the printer, you do not need to change any settings in the router.  The router will automatically find your printer when you turn your printer on.   Even if your printer is using a fixed LAN IP address, your computers can continue to get their address automatically from the router's DHCP server.

  • Can't connect to WRT54GL using Vista

    Hi all,
This weekend I bought a new laptop, a packard bell running Vista. At home I have a WRT54GL router, which works fine with the Macbook I already had.
After powering up the new Vista laptop, I tried connecting to the wireless network. Although Vista recognizes the network (it shows up on the list of active networks), I cannot connect. I have tried using WEP, WPA, WPA2, and even the unsecured mode for the network. Vista knows if the network is or is not secured (so it does receive a signal), but it does not allow me to connect to. And what I get from Vista as to how to solve this problem does not help at all ("try connecting to another network" ....). In all cases, the Macbook connects without problem.
Any thoughts on what could be wrong with the Vista laptop, and what I could do about it?
    Thanks a lot!
    Mark

Change the Wireless Channel on the router(channels : 1/11/9)....Also change the SSID on the router...If it does not make any difference it is possibly your laptop...Try connecting to some other network either from home or outside your home...If it does not connect you need to update/re-install the built-in wireless adapter drivers...
